AbstractUsing a critical ethnography approach, this manuscript seeks to explore and analyze the authors’ experiences at their institutions when they began their tenure-track journey at their teaching institutions. This manuscript seeks to provide specific strategies that tenure-track faculty trained at research intensive universities have used to negotiate the requirements of teaching, scholarship, and service at undergraduate and master’s-granting institutions. Initially, we suggested four themes were salient in our experiences: Contracts and criteria; access to resources; interacting with students; and the importance of finding balance. After our discussion at the TALS 2020 conference, two themes emerged as being important to the audience: interactions with students and finding balance. With the experiences from this research, it can inform practices for academic institutional practices and preparation of doctoral students, with a research-intensive background, to enter academia at a teaching-focused institution. As well, it provides future recommendations for continued research in this area.

IMPORTANCE: Patients with breast cancer remain at risk of relapse after adjuvant therapy. Celecoxib has shown antitumor effects in preclinical models of human breast cancer, but clinical evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of celecoxib as an addition to conventional therapy for women with ERBB2 (formerly HER2)–negative primary breast cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Randomized European Celecoxib Trial (REACT) was a phase 3, randomized, double-blind study conducted in 160 centers across the UK and Germany testing 2 years of adjuvant celecoxib vs placebo among 2639 patients recruited between January 19, 2007, and November 1, 2012, with follow-up 10 years after treatment completion. Eligible patients had completely resected breast cancer with local and systemic therapy according to local practice. Patients with ERBB2-positive or node-negative and T1, grade 1 tumors were not eligible. Randomization was in a 2:1 ratio between celecoxib or placebo. Statistical analysis was performed from May 5, 2019, to March 5, 2020. INTERVENTIONS: Patients received celecoxib, 400 mg, or placebo once daily for 2 years. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary end point was disease-free survival (DFS), analyzed in the intention-to-treat population using Cox proportional hazards regression and log-rank analysis. Follow-up is complete. RESULTS: A total of 2639 patients (median age, 55.2 years [range, 26.8-86.0 years]) were recruited; 1763 received celecoxib, and 876 received placebo. Most patients’ tumors (1930 [73%]) were estrogen receptor positive or progesterone receptor positive and ERBB2 negative. A total of 1265 patients (48%) had node-positive disease, and 1111 (42%) had grade 3 tumors. At a median follow-up of 74.3 months (interquartile range, 61.4-93.6 years), DFS events had been reported for 487 patients (19%): 18% for those who received celecoxib (n = 323; 5-year DFS rate = 84%) vs 19% for those who received placebo (n = 164; 5-year DFS rate = 83%); the unadjusted hazard ratio was 0.97 (95% CI, 0.80-1.17; log-rank P = .75). Rates of toxic effects were low across both treatment groups, with no evidence of a difference. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this randomized clinical trial, patients showed no evidence of a DFS benefit for 2 years’ treatment with celecoxib compared with placebo as adjuvant treatment of ERBB2-negative breast cancer. Longer-term treatment or use of a higher dose of celecoxib may lead to a DFS benefit, but further studies would be required to test this possibility. Discussions of promenade concerts, at least in the United Kingdom, tend to run along one of two lines: either the format is emblematic of attempts to popularize classical music or (in the famous case of the Last Night of the BBC Proms) it is symptomatic of a contested cultural nationalism. An alternative line of inquiry is to consider promenade concerts as part of the built environment. Until 2010 the fountain at the Royal Albert Hall was a mainstay of musical promenading; it had been so for over a century and a half. Such fountains, often accompanied by potted plants and Arcadian décor, were said to cool the concert hall and freshen the air, especially when their sprinkles were supplemented with blocks of imported ice. They occupied a prominent place in a concert architecture that encouraged mobility and informality, drawing on a long tradition of outdoor promenading that had gradually moved indoors. The history of concert hall suggests that the promenade phenomenon constituted not only a site of social and political negotiation (as it has typically been described), but also a staging post in the enclosure of hitherto open spaces and an example of the Victorian desire to control the climate of public assembly.

AbstractLeisure scholars are uniquely positioned to study awe. Anecdotally, the intertwined nature of awe and leisure has been well chronicled for centuries. In recent years, their relationship has been increasingly explored at the empirical level. Despite the clear connections, the enhanced level of scholarship has occurred with only sporadic contributions by scholars in parks, recreation, tourism, and leisure circles. The purposes of this manuscript are to identify attributes of awe, explore the relationship between awe and leisure, and consider the shared qualities of awe and leisure. A literature review identifies leisure settings in which awe has been chronicled to occur. Those settings are dichotomized in terms of natural and cultural landscapes, with wildlife and artistic expression noted respectively as potential elicitors of awe. Implications for parks, recreation, tourism, and leisure are discussed and include potential action points for decision makers and scholars, with specific emphasis on the potential to enhance the awe-related leisure body of research.

This pilot study sought to explore the ways in which northern Illinois land managers and decision makers were influenced personally and professionally by emotional interactions with white-tailed deer. Utilizing in-depth interviews, the study focused on three research questions: (1) What emotional responses are elicited by interaction with deer? (2) How do emotional responses to deer change over time? (3) How do relationships with deer affect support for deer management policy? Qualitative data suggested that: participants viewed deer as a symbolically significant species; contextual factors influenced emotions toward deer; “outsiders” and trophy hunters were perceived negatively; and personal feelings and management priorities required balance. The theoretical frame was informed by Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb, 1984) and the Theory of Emotional Memory (LeDoux, 2007). Implications for theory, research, and management are discussed.

AbstractThis study explored the relationships between adults with disabilities and service dogs through leisure participation. The relationships between service dog and owner and perceptions of and access to leisure were explored via semi-structured interviews. Emergent themes included feelings of interdependence and a lifelong emotional connection. Themes related to perceptions of and access to leisure included service dog orientation and the influence of lifestyle. Owners felt that having a service dog was a positive influence on leisure activities. The emotional connection between owner and service dog was multidimensional, inclusive of trust, maintaining independence, increased socialization, and creating a need to participate in leisure experiences. The cognitive hierarchy model, and experiential learning and transformational learning theories were applied.

The author examines Tatum's success and legacy, noting the racial and financial barriers of 1920s and 1930s America, and provides quotations about Tatum from other jazz musicians including Eric Reed and Charlie Parker. Tatum's improvisational musical style and later life are also addressed.
