The excellent catalytic properties of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) for the degradation of the highly toxic and recalcitrant chlorpyrifos pesticide are widely known. However, CuNPs generally present low stability caused by their high sensitivity to oxidation, which leads to a change of the catalytic response over time. In the current work, the immobilization of CuNPs into a polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix via electrospinning was demonstrated to be a very effective method to retard air and solvent oxidation and to ensure constant catalytic activity in the long term. CuNPs were successfully anchored into PCL electrospun fibers in the form of Cu2O at different concentrations (from 1.25 wt % to 5 wt % with respect to the PCL), with no signs of loss by leaching out. The PCL mats loaded with 2.5 wt % Cu (PCL-2.5Cu) almost halved the initial concentration of pesticide (40 mg/L) after 96 h. This process was performed in two unprompted and continuous steps that consisted of adsorption, followed by degradation. Interestingly, the degradation process was independent of the light conditions (i.e., not photocatalytic), expanding the application environments (e.g., groundwaters). Moreover, the PCL-2.5Cu composite presents high reusability, retaining the high elimination capability for at least five cycles and eliminating a total of 100 mg/L of chlorpyrifos, without exhibiting any sign of morphological damages.

The replacement of plastic with eco-friendly and biodegradable materials is one of the most stringent environmental challenges. In this respect, cellulose stands out as a biodegradable polymer. However, a significant challenge is to obtain biodegradable materials for high-end photonics that are robust in humid environments. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of high-quality micro- and nanoscale photonic and plasmonic structures viareplica molding using pure cellulose and a blended version with nonedible agro-wastes. Both materials are biodegradable in soil and seawater according to the ISO 17556 standard. The pure cellulose films are transparent in the vis–NIR spectrum, having a refractive index similar to glass. The microstructured photonic crystals show high-quality diffractive properties that are maintained under extended exposure to water. Nanostructuring the cellulose transforms it to a biodegradable metasurface manifesting bright structural colors. A subsequent deposition of Ag endowed the metasurface with plasmonic properties used to produce plasmonic colors and for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Designing starch-based biopolymers and biodegradable composites with durable mechanical properties and good resistance to water is still a challenging task. Although thermoplastic (destructured) starch has emerged as an alternative to petroleum-based polymers, its poor dimensional stability under humid and dry conditions extensively hinders its use as the biopolymer of choice in many applications. Unmodified starch granules, on the other hand, suffer from incompatibility, poor dispersion, and phase separation issues when compounded into other thermoplastics above a concentration level of 5%. Herein, we present a facile biodegradable elastomer preparation method by incorporating large amounts of unmodified corn starch, exceeding 80% by volume, in acetoxy-polyorganosiloxane thermosets to produce mechanically robust, hydrophobic bioelastomers. The naturally adsorbed moisture on the surface of starch enables autocatalytic rapid hydrolysis of polyorganosiloxane to form Si–O–Si networks. Depending on the amount of starch granules, the mechanical properties of the bioelastomers can be easily tuned with high elastic recovery rates. Moreover, starch granules considerably lowered the surface friction coefficient of the polyorganosiloxane network. Stress relaxation measurements indicated that the bioelastomers have strain energy dissipation factors that are lower than those of conventional rubbers, rendering them as promising green substitutes for plastic mechanical energy dampeners. Corn starch granules also have excellent compatibility with addition-cured polysiloxane chemistry that is used extensively in microfabrication. Regardless of the starch concentration, all of the developed bioelastomers have hydrophobic surfaces with lower friction coefficients and much less water uptake capacity than those of thermoplastic starch. The bioelastomers are biocompatible and are estimated to biodegrade in Mediterranean seawater within three to six years.

Tomato fruits (Solanum lycopersicumL.) accumulate flavonoids in their cuticle and epidermal cells during ripening. These flavonoids come from de novobiosynthesis due to a significant increase in chalcone synthase (CHS) activity during ripening. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of tomato fruits have been used to down-regulate SlCHSexpression during ripening and analyze the effects at the epidermal and cuticle level. Besides the expected change in fruit color due to a lack of flavonoids incorporated to the cuticle, several other modifications such as a decrease in the amount of cutin and polysaccharides were observed. These indicate a role for either flavonoids or CHSin the alteration of the expression levels of some genes involved in cuticle biosynthesis. Moreover, a negative interaction between the 2 cuticle components, flavonoids and waxes, suggests a relationship between these 2 metabolic pathways.
