Rupture of the urinary bladder, although relatively common in foals, is an infrequent occurrence in adult stallions. Standing laparoscopic repair of a ruptured urinary bladder offers significant advantages over other treatment options, and to date, there are no reports describing this technique in treating adult stallions. This case study details the treatment of a mature draught horse for uroperitoneum secondary to a ruptured urinary bladder. Standing laparoscopic repair of the ruptured bladder was performed. No major post operative complications developed, and the horse has not had any recurrence of problems with the urinary bladder. Successful standing laparoscopic repair in this horse demonstrated the method's viability, which offers superior intraoperative visualisation and access to the bladder, while eliminating the risks of general anaesthesia.

Background:An oral, fixed-dose sodium phenylbutyrate-ursodoxicoltaurine (PB-TURSO) coformulation was evaluated in a multicenter ALS trial (CENTAUR). Methods:Adults with definite ALS, ≤18 months from symptom onset, (N=137) were randomized 2:1 to PB-TURSO or placebo for 6 months. Completing participants were eligible to receive PB-TURSO in the open-label extension (OLE) (≤30 months). The primary efficacy endpoint in both periods was rate of ALS Functional Rating Scale–Revised (ALSFRS-R) total score decline. All-cause survival was analyzed July 2020 (longest follow-up, 35 months). Safety was assessed in both periods. Results:Over 6-month randomized treatment, mean ALSFRS-R total score decline was slower with PB-TURSO vs placebo (difference, 0.42 points/month; P=0.03). Participants receiving PB-TURSO in the OLE (continued or crossover from placebo) maintained or initiated functional benefit beyond 6 months of therapy. Mean hazard of death was 44% lower (P=0.02) in the original PB-TURSO group. Overall adverse event (AE) incidence was similar, though early (week ≤3) gastrointestinal AEs were more frequent during initial exposure to PB-TURSO (randomized period or OLE). Conclusions:PB-TURSO resulted in superior retention of function in the randomized period. Long-term OLE results support functional benefits of early vs delayed therapy and of sustained treatment. Survival was longer in the original PB-TURSO group after nearly 3 years.

Osteoporosis is characterized by both a low bone mass and a disruption of the architectural arrangement of bone tissue, leading to decreased skeletal strength and increased fracture risk. Although there are well‐known ethnic differences in bone mass and fracture risk, little is known about possible ethnic differences in bone structure. Therefore, we studied cross‐sectional geometry in the hip in a sample of postmenopausal black and white women in order to investigate ethnic differences that might contribute to differences in bone strength and ultimately hip fracture risk. We recruited 371 postmenopausal black and white women who were entering the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) clinical trials in Detroit. Bone density measurements of the proximal femur were done by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA) using a Hologic 1000 Plus bone densitometer. The DXA data were used for hip structure analysis, which treats the entire proximal femur as a continuous curved beam from the proximal shaft to the femoral neck. This permits the analysis of cross‐sectional geometric properties in two narrow regions corresponding to thin (5 mm) cross‐sectional slabs seen on edge. The results indicate significant ethnic differences in bone density, cross‐sectional geometry, and dimensional variables. Specifically, the black women have a significantly higher bone density in both locations (10.1% and 4.1% for the neck and shaft, respectively); greater cross‐sectional geometric properties in the neck (ranging from 6.1% to 11.6%), but a smaller endocortical diameter in the neck (3.6%). There are fewer significant differences in cross‐sectional geometry in the shaft location. Our data suggest that the spatial distribution of bone is arranged in the femoral neck to resist greater loading in black women compared with white women.

The results of analyses of the major chemical constituents ofLobatostoma ringens are as follows: water, 71.6% fresh weight; ash, 4.6% dry weight; protein, 64.3% dry weight; glycogen, 4.7% ethanol-extracted dry weight; lipid, 6.4% fresh weight. Histochemical staining revealed glycogen mainly in the parenchyma and musculature, with smaller deposits in the vitelline cells and spermatozoa; neutral lipid was localized in the gastrodermis and excretory system; and the surfaces of the tegument and gastrodermis were reactive for acidic mucopolysaccharides. Protein synthesis was evident in the tegumental cells, gastrodermis, and vitellaria.

Abstract The human skin equivalent (HSE) provides a convenient model system for studying the cellular responses of basal keratinocytes to UV irradiation. HSEs, constructed by overlaying a collagen-fibroblast matrix with epidermal cells, were raised to an air-liquid interface to promote epidermal differentiation. HSEs were exposed to ultraviolet radiation from a 500-W Hot Quartz Hanovia therapeutic sunlamp, at a total dose of 100 J/m: 2. The HSEs were then frozen every 4 h over a 48-h period and cryosectioned. For each time period, the expression of β: 1integrin and cyclin E, p53, or Bcl-2 were quantified using dual immunolocalization. Basal cells expressing β: 1integrin were divided into two subpopulations, denoted β: 1highor β: 1low. The proportion of β: 1highkeratinocytes expressing Bcl-2 and cyclin E increased significantly 4 and 8 h, respectively, after exposure to UV; during the subsequent 16 h, this basal cell subpopulation expressed p53. By contrast, significant numbers of β: 1lowbasal keratinocytes expressed p53, but not Bcl-2. These results suggest that β: 1highand β: 1lowpopulations of basal epidermal cells in HSEs respond differently to UV irradiation.:

This study investigated the effects of necrotic enteritis challenge or a necrotic enteritis challenge with an additional challenge from dietary aflatoxin B1 compared to broilers that were unchallenged. Also tested were products designed to help alleviate those effects. Lesion scores were higher in broilers challenged to induce necrotic enteritis, but this did not increase with added aflatoxin. The presence of dietary aflatoxin during a necrotic enteritis challenge significantly increased the negative effects of the necrotic enteritis challenge. During the necrotic enteritis challenge virginiamycin, Calibrin-Z, or a blend of Calibrin-Z, an organic acid, and yucca, helped to decrease the effects of the challenge. When birds are challenged with necrotic enteritis and dietary aflatoxin is present, Calibrin-Z had an advantage over all other tested products.
