Full mouth extraction (FME) in dogs is a common procedure performed in veterinary dental referral practice. Clients may be apprehensive to have FME performed, with concerns for ability to eat and quality of life. These concerns may be barriers to electing to proceed. This study used a cross-sectional survey to identify concerns clients had regarding FME. Medical records of 168 dogs that underwent FME at a referral practice from 2013 to 2019 were sent surveys. A total of 55 responses were obtained. This study demonstrated that after extractions, 52.7% of the patients ate the same diet as before the surgery. Regarding enthusiasm for eating, 12 (21.7%) reported an increase in enthusiasm, 15 (27.3%) reported slightly more enthusiasm, 25 (45.5%) reported the same enthusiasm, two (3.6%) reported less enthusiasm, and one (1.8%) showed a complete lack of interest. Fifty-one (92.7%) reported improved postoperative oral comfort. Twenty-five respondents (45.5%) had a great deal of anxiety before the procedure, specifically regarding eating postoperatively, 13 (24.1%) were extremely concerned, 31 (57.4%) were somewhat concerned. Twenty-six (47.3%) were extremely anxious about anesthesia. This study demonstrated high client satisfaction with 45 (81.8%) of the respondents reporting high satisfaction. This survey demonstrated that FME is a successful procedure with a high rate of client satisfaction.

The objective of this study was to determine the success of the natural crowns of endodontically treated canine teeth in pet dogs, instrumented and obturated using rotary driven non-taper nickel titanium files, through an occlusal access preparation, without the placement of a prosthetic cast metal crown. A search of medical records at a private veterinary dental referral practice was conducted to identify pet dogs having had endodontic treatment of one or more canine teeth over an eleven-year period (2007-2018). Follow up, performed by the same veterinary dental specialist, included a complete oral health assessment under general anesthesia and included intraoral radiography thereby allowing close visual examination of the crown and restoration as well as assessing endodontic success. Time to follow up was between two and nine years after treatment with a mean of 4.5 years. Analysis revealed that 29/29 (100%) of the treated crowns maintained their stability and did not require extraction. 5/29 (17.2%) of the treated teeth had an enamel fracture requiring additional treatment to the crown after the initial treatment; 1/29 (3.4%) had additional abrasion but did not require treatment and 23/29 (79.3%) were found to have sustained no additional damage. This study supports endodontic treatment without the placement of a prosthetic crown in canine teeth in pet dogs when an occlusal access site is used as described in this paper. Further study is required on the increased risk of fracture of the remaining unaltered canine teeth.

Successful treatment and prevention of periodontal disease in pet animals requires a multidimensional approach to identify and eliminate exacerbating factors, provide scheduled professional examinations and care, and plan and implement a dental homecare program. Over the years, many therapeutic and preventive interventions have been developed or advocated for periodontal disease, but evidence of efficacy or effectiveness is highly variable. Accordingly, the main objective of this systematic review is to identify and critically appraise the evidence supporting various aspects of homecare for prevention of canine and feline periodontal disease.

Dental charts and records of 71 dogs were reviewed and 84 intact tooth crowns were noted to have been entirely discolored in shades of pink, purple, grey, or tan. Endodontic therapy was performed on 49 of these teeth allowing gross examination of the entire pulp. An exploratory pulpotomy was performed in 15 teeth prior to exodontic therapy in order to assess the integrity of the coronal pulp. Gross signs of partial or total pulp necrosis were present in 59 (92.2 %) of these teeth. The pulp was not observed grossly in 20 teeth which received exodontic therapy. Overall, of the 84 teeth evaluated, 36 (42.9 %) had no radiographic signs of endodontic disease. Gross or radiographic signs of endodontic disease were absent in only 2 (4.1 %) discolored teeth receiving endodontic therapy. Basal on the low incidence of vital, affected teeth in the dogs of this study, endodontic or exodontic therapy is recommended tor discolored teeth.

The dental records of 435 dogs seen in a dental referral practice were reviewed. Twenty-three dogs (5.3%) had one or more caries lesions. Of the 47 caries lesions, 19 (40%) were pit and fissure caries, 17 (36%) were smooth surface caries, and 11 (23%) were root caries. Twelve dogs had symmetrical lesions. The teeth most commonly involved were the fourth premolar and first and second molar teeth. Twenty affected teeth were extracted and 17 were treated by cavity preparation and restoration with composite or glass ionomer materials. Ten restorations in four dogs were examined one year or more following treatment; all of the restorations were intact and there was no progression of the caries.

Large defects of the hard palate can result from a congenital abnormality, trauma, or surgical treatment of oral masses. Closure of these defects can be challenging as dehiscence is common. Large, inoperable hard palate defects may be managed with prosthetic obturators, which recreate the separation between the oral and nasal cavities. This report describes the use of a palatal obturator to manage a large palatal defect that persisted after resection of a palatal fibrosarcoma. Three prior attempts at surgical closure of the defect had failed.

Lingually displaced canine teeth is a common malocclusion condition in dogs, the treatment of which has been described 1,2,3,4,5. Several of the previously reported treatment regimens involve the use of potentially harmful (toxic and/or dangerously exothermic) substances (methylmethacrylate) or require separate anesthetic episodes to make impressions and place the appliance. In this case, a dog was treated with directly placed appliances made of non-heat generating light-cured resin. Treatment required only one anesthetic episode to place the appliances and one more to remove them.

Crown lengthening is the exposure of root structure to function as clinical crown for restorative coverage.1Indications for crown lengthening include increasing the amount of clinical crown available for attachment of a prosthesis (crown or bridge) following crown fracture, and exposure of a malerupted tooth crown allowing management of any pathologic changes. Types of crown lengthening procedures include simple gingivectomy [type I], apically repositioned flap(s) following bone recontouring [type II], or orthodontic extrusion [type III].Type I and II crown lengthening procedures involve periodontal surgery requiring maintenance of the biological width of the gingiva composed of the gingival sulcus, junctional epithelium, and connective tissue attachment (Fig. 1). Each of these zones is approximately 1-mm wide in humans, and may be 2 to 3-mm wide in large dogs. In type II crown lengthening procedures in dogs, the apically repositioned flap should maintain a minimum 3-mm biological width of the gingiva coronal to the newly formed alveolar crest to provide space for the three zones to reestablish.Failure to maintain gingival biological width physiology may cause an inflammatory response that results in crestal bone resorption and apical migration of periodontal soft tissues.1Advanced periodontal disease resulting in the formation of infrabony pockets may jeopardize tooth maintenance.1Crown preparation may be performed acutely, however a 2 to 3-week interval is recommended between crown lengthening and preparation to allow for accurate assessment of gingival margin location following wound healing. Type II crown lengthening of the mandibular and maxillary canine teeth is described step-by-step.

Compound odontomas are rare tumors of dental origin. Though benign, their effect as a space occupying lesion can be dramatic. A large compound odontoma in the caudal right mandible of a five and a half month old dog was managed by surgical enucleation of the abnormal tissues. No recurrence was evident 6 months later.
