Facing targets sputtering (FTS) is known to be one of the promising magnetron sputtering systems for low temperature processes, because of the significant reduction of damage in the film structure, by the suppression of impinging high energy particles. In this study, FTS was compared with conventional magnetron sputtering (CMS), by various plasma diagnostics methods and film analysis. The sputtering target used was ZnO:Al (2%). OES was used to study the emission spectroscopy of process plasma. Ion current densities and the temperatures on the substrate were measured, to compare FTS with CMS. A coplanar-type Fabry--Perot interferometer (FPI) was utilized to measure the gas temperatures of Zn atoms, by Doppler broadening of the corresponding emission lines. Gas temperatures of Zn of FTS were measured to be lower, in the range of 200--300 K, compared with those of CMS. Film analysis showed that quality films can be synthesized at low temperature with rf powered FTS.

Streptomyces species produce many clinically important secondary metabolites, including antibiotics and antitumorals. They have a complex developmental cycle, including programmed cell death phenomena, that makes this bacterium a multicellular prokaryotic model. There are two differentiated mycelial stages: an early compartmentalized vegetative mycelium (first mycelium) and a multinucleated reproductive mycelium (second mycelium) arising after programmed cell death processes. In the present study, we made a detailed proteomics analysis of the distinct developmental stages of solid confluent Streptomyces coelicolor cultures using iTRAQ (isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation) labeling and LC-MS/MS. A new experimental approach was developed to obtain homogeneous samples at each developmental stage (temporal protein analysis) and also to obtain membrane and cytosolic protein fractions (spatial protein analysis). A total of 345 proteins were quantified in two biological replicates. Comparative bioinformatics analyses revealed the switch from primary to secondary metabolism between the initial compartmentalized mycelium and the multinucleated hyphae.

Abstract: Reported patency rates for paramalleolar bypass grafts have varied widely. To determine factors predictive of outcome, we reviewed our experience with 80 consecutive paramalleolar reconstructions in 68 patients performed between December 1986 and May 1995. All procedures were performed for critical limb ischemia defined as nonhealing ulcer or gangrene (n=72, 90%) and rest pain (n=8, 10%). Risk factors present were diabetes (n=52, 65%), hypertension (n=64, 80%), and history of smoking (n=57, 71%). Of the 80 bypasses, in situ saphenous vein conduits were used in 39 (49%). In the remainder non-in situ grafts were used including reversed vein (n=25, 31%), composite vein (n=11, 14%), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; n=4, 5%), and composite PTFE/vein (n=1, 1%). The recipient vessel was the dorsalis pedis artery in 26 procedures (33%), the posterior tibial artery in 32 (40%), the distal anterior tibial artery in 18 (22%), and tarsal or plantar vessels in four (5%). Primary and secondary patency rates were 52% and 68% at 36 months, respectively, by life-table analysis. The limb salvage rate was 86% and patient survival was 56% at 36 months. Secondary patency was significantly higher in diabetic patients than in their nondiabetic counterparts (86% vs. 50% at 36 months,p<0.03). Similarly, patients undergoing in situ reconstructions had better secondary patency than patients with non-in situ conduits (86% vs. 51% at 36 months,p=0.03). Diabetic patients tended to be younger (median age 69 years vs. 72 years) and had fewer prior reconstructions (7 [13%] vs. 13 [46%],p<0.01). Diabetic patients received a higher proportion of in situ reconstructions (54% vs. 39%) but the difference did not achieve statistical significance (p=0.09). We conclude that the long-term patency for paramalleolar bypass is acceptable but inferior to reported figures for more proximal reconstructions. The factors that most influence patency are the quality of the venous conduit and the presence of diabetes. The improved patency seen in diabetic patients is likely related to the fact that these patients require paramalleolar bypass at an earlier age, are less likely to have had previous reconstructions, and are therefore more likely to have a good quality venous conduit.

Although results of iliac artery balloon angioplasty have been shown to be good, there are much less data regarding initial success and durability of superficial femoral artery (SFA) dilation. The authors retrospectively reviewed the results of 22 patients treated for 27 SFA lesions between 1981 and 1986. Mean age was 64.5 years (fifty-five to seventy-six). Results were analyzed with respect to initial, early ( < twelve months), and late ( > twelve months) angiographic and clinical success. Indications were claudication (22), nonhealing ulcer (3), and rest pain (2). Mean follow-up was 30.9 months; 100% at one year and 92% at two years. Initial failure occurred in 9 (33%) lesions. There were 2 early and 2 late failures for a cumulative patency rate of 90.3% and 78% at one and two years, respectively. Predictors of clinical failure were: (1) initial—age, SFA occlusion, and angio plasty rating; (2) early—age, SFA occlusion, degree of atherosclerosis, and angioplasty rating; (3) late—angioplasty rating. There were 3 complications (11%).The authors conclude that: (1) 33% of attempted SFA angioplasties were initially unsuccessful and that the cumulative patency rate was 78% at two years. (2) Age is predictive of initial and early failure; SFA occlusion, of initial and early failure; degree of atherosclerosis, of early failure; and angioplasty appearance, of initial, early, and late failures. (3) Complications did not result in limb loss or require surgery.

The objectives of this study were to assess the durability of response to treatment with polidocanol endovenous microfoam (Varithena; Provensis Ltd, a BTG International group company) and to assess the long-term safety of the study patients.
