The sea is omnipresent in ancient Greek literature. From ἅλς to πέλαγος, from θάλασσα to πόντος and even λαῖτμα, the Greek language contains a variety of terms to refer to the sea, each with different nuances and connotations. This article first examines the lexical and semantic aspects of the terms used in Greek to refer to the sea. It then analyses the ambivalence and duality with which the sea is represented in literature, from Homeric epic to the Hellenistic period, with particular emphasis on its metaphorical dimension. It notes that PTSD, which became a new psychiatric diagnosis in 1980, was used to describe the symptoms seen in Vietnam combat veterans who were subjected to stress, depression, and flashbacks of violent events.
