Abstract

Aims.Archeops is a balloon-borne experiment inspired by the Planck satellite and its high frequency instrument (HFI). It is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies at high angular resolution (~12 arcmin) over a large fraction of the sky (around 30%) at 143, 217, 353, and 545 GHz. The Archeops 353 GHz channel consists of three pairs of polarized sensitive bolometers designed to detect the polarized diffuse emission of Galactic dust.

Abstract

We present improved results on the measurement of the angular power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies using the data from the last Archeopsflight. This refined analysis is obtained by using the 6 most sensitive photometric pixels in the CMB bands centered at 143 and 217 GHz and 20% of the sky, mostly clear of foregrounds. Using two different cross-correlation methods, we obtain very similar results for the angular power spectrum. Consistency checks are performed to test the robustness of these results paying particular attention to the foreground contamination level which remains well below the statistical uncertainties. The multipole range from $\ell=10$to $\ell=700$is covered with 25 bins, confirming strong evidence for a plateau at large angular scales (the Sachs-Wolfe plateau) followed by two acoustic peaks centered around $\ell=220$and $\ell=550$respectively. These data provide an independent confirmation, obtained at different frequencies, of the Wmapfirst year results.

Abstract

We present the first determination of the Galactic polarized emission at 353 GHz by Archeops. The data were taken during the Arctic night of February 7, 2002 after the balloon-borne instrument was launched by CNES from the Swedish Esrange base near Kiruna. In addition to the 143 GHz and 217 GHz frequency bands dedicated to CMB studies, Archeops had one 545 GHz and six 353 GHz bolometers mounted in three polarization–sensitive pairs that were used for Galactic foreground studies. We present maps of the $I,~Q,~U$Stokes parameters over 17% of the sky and with a 13 arcmin resolution at 353 GHz ($850~\mu{\rm m}$). They show a significant Galactic large scale polarized emission coherent on the longitude ranges $\lbrack 100,~120\rbrack$and $\lbrack 180,~200\rbrack$deg. with a degree of polarization at the level of 4–5%, in agreement with expectations from starlight polarization measurements. Some regions in the Galactic plane (Gem OB1, Cassiopeia) show an even stronger degree of polarization in the range 10–20%. These findings provide strong evidence for a powerful grain alignment mechanism throughout the interstellar medium and a coherent magnetic field coplanar to the Galactic plane. This magnetic field pervades even some dense clouds. Extrapolated to high Galactic latitude, these results indicate that interstellar dust polarized emission is the major foreground for PLANCK–HFI CMB polarization measurements.

Abstract

We analyze the cosmological constraints that Archeops (Benoît et al. 2003) places on adiabatic cold dark matter models with passive power-law initial fluctuations. Because its angular power spectrum has small bins in $\ell$and large $\ell$coverage down to COBE scales, Archeops provides a precise determination of the first acoustic peak in terms of position at multipole $l_{\rm peak}=220\pm 6$, height and width. An analysis of Archeops data in combination with other CMB datasets constrains the baryon content of the Universe, $\Omega_{\rm b}h^2= 0.022^{+0.003}_{-0.004}$, compatible with Big-Bang nucleosynthesis and with a similar accuracy. Using cosmological priors obtained from recent non–CMB data leads to yet tighter constraints on the total density, e.g. $\Omega_{\rm tot}=1.00^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$using the HST determination of the Hubble constant. An excellent absolute calibration consistency is found between Archeops and other CMB experiments, as well as with the previously quoted best fit model. The spectral index nis measured to be $1.04^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$when the optical depth to reionization, τ, is allowed to vary as a free parameter, and $0.96^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$when τis fixed to zero, both in good agreement with inflation.

5. Drug Hypersensitivity: Epidemiology and Risk Factors

Abstract

Drug allergies are heterogeneous and multifactorial diseases and are always the consequence of an exaggerated immune-mediated reaction. Previously described models of immunologic mechanisms (mainly based on Gell and Combs classification) cannot fully explain the physiopathology of these diseases; it seems therefore important to identify risk factors. Clinical and biologic tests are helpful diagnostic tools but are limited in their sensitivity and reliability and are certainly not predictive. Epidemiologic data supply information concerning the prevalence of drug hypersensitivity: female gender, concomitant infections (HIV, herpes) and concurrent illnesses (systemic lupus erythematosus) are all significant risk factors. Another host-related factor is the genetic predisposition of patients and is currently under investigation in our laboratory. Most genetic studies concern HLA haplotype association or polymorphism in genes encoding drugmetabolising enzymes. A current study by our group seems to implicate polymorphisms within the promoter of IL-10, a cytokine with anti-inflammatory properties. The chemical properties of the drug and the treatment regimen also influence the development of drug allergies.

Abstract

A short explanation is given of the Barrel Ring Imaging CHerenkov (BRICH) detector and its performance. We discuss in brief some of the requirements to run this detector. Special attention is paid to the functioning of the Cherenkov photon detector — a photosensitive gas-filled drift chamber where the photoelectrons drift to a MWPC of special construction. We illustrate the BRICH performance with some preliminary results.

Abstract

Biotin-deficient rats show a slowing down of the growth and an involution of the thymus. The amount of the thymic peptides controlling DNA template, if referred to the thymus weight is higher in deficient than in control rats; no significant difference is noticed among the contents of the active peptides when evaluated per rat. The inhibiting activity on RNA synthesis is the same for the peptides extracted from normal and from biotin-deficient rat thymus.

Abstract

The DELPHI detector installed in the LEP (Large Electron-Positron Collider) is equipped with RICH (ring imaging Cherenkov) counters. The barrel part incorporates a liquid (C/sub 6/F/sub 14/) and a gaseous (C/sub 5/F/sub 12/) radiator, providing particle identification up to 20 GeV/c. The Cherenkov photons of both radiators are detected by TPC (time projection chamber)-like photon detectors. The drift gas (75% CH/sub 4/+25% C/sub 2/H/sub 6/) is doped with TMAE (tetrakis-dimethylamine-ethylene) by which the ultraviolet Cherenkov photons are converted into single free photoelectrons. These are drifted towards multiwire proportional chambers at the end of the drift tubes, and the space coordinates of the conversion point are determined. One half of the barrel RICH is now equipped with drift tubes and has provided results from the liquid radiator since spring 1990. The gas radiator has been tested with C/sub 2/F/sub 6/ as a preliminary filling since August 1990. The data obtained demonstrate the good particle identification potential. For the liquid radiator, the number of detected photons per ring in hadron jets is N=8, whereas for muon pairs (single tracks) N=10 has been obtained. For the gas radiator, 2.1 photons per track were observed, which demonstrates good functioning of the focussing mirrors.<>

Abstract

The ring imaging Cherenkov detector in the DELPHI Experiment at LEP allows hadron identification over a momentum range up to about 40 Gev/cover a near to 4π solid angle. Photons emitted by charged particles traversing gas and liquid radiators which are filled with UV-transparent perfluorocarbons, are used for Cherenkov angle reconstruction. Stable operation ensures that the detector is an efficient and powerful instrument. Monitoring of the detector parameters is of utmost importance to achieve good data quality and adequate data processing. The hadron identifying power of the ring imaging Cherenkov detector closely meets the main design values. Computerized control and monitoring features of the different subsystems will be presented. The interplay between detector parameters and the particle separating capacity of the detector will be discussed.

Abstract

The RNA synthesis of human leukemic leukocytes and phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocytes is markedly reduced by administration of a low-molecular-weight nonhistone peptide factor from calf thymus. Treatment with the factor strongly inhibits hemoglobin production and globin mRNA transcription in dimethyl sulfoxide-stimulated Friend cells without appreciably modifying the rate of cell growth. Evidence for specificity of these effects is provided by the lack of action of the factor on both growth rate and RNA synthesis of a number of nondifferentiating cell lines from various animal species. After removal of the compound, both human lymphocytes and Friend cells can be stimulated by phytohemagglutinin and by dimethyl sulfoxide, respectively, ruling out any toxic effect.

The Barrel Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector of the DELPHI experiment at LEP provides particle identification by the detection of the radiation emitted in UV transparent perfluorocarbons. We will present the principles of the operation of the detector together with a discussion of the automatized control of all the relevant physical parameters. The observed performances of the detector are very close to their design values.<>

Abstract

Low molecular weight peptides from calf thymus cause a strong dose-dependent stabilization of the DNA. The strength of DNA-peptide interaction is pH-dependent and decreases rapidly above pH 6.5. Moreover the complete kinetics of DNA denaturation and renaturation demonstrates that the peptide fraction increases significantly the DNA renaturation mostly at low temperature, showing that the interaction DNA-thymic effector helps the recombination of complementary DNA segments. The DNA stabilization rate by the peptide fraction is comparable to that obtained by means of high concentration of histones or synthetic polycationic peptides. However, the lack of basic amino acids in the peptide structure is not in favor of strong electrostatic interactions and implies a specific binding of peptide to DNA. The possible correlation of the specific thymic peptides-DNA interaction with the stereochemical kinking scheme of DNA is discussed.

Abstract

A calf thymus peptide fraction controlling DNA and chromatin template has been purified by DNA-cellulose and Dowex 50 WX2 chromatography and its amino acid composition determined. The active peptide fraction can be extracted in high pH buffer from calf thymus native chromatin previously deproteinized by chloroform-isoamylalcohol and phenol. These data demonstrate that the thymic peptide(s) is (are) a chromatin protein constituent strongly linked to DNA. The specificity in association of the peptide(s) to DNA has also been considered.

Abstract

Abstract

WE have reported1the isolation of a thymic peptide which strongly inhibits DNA-directed RNA polymerase in vitro. We have shown that transcription is controlled at the level of initiation. The active factor was isolated from aqueous ultrafiltered thymus extracts, purified by chromatography, first on DEAE–cellulose and then on Dowex 50 WX2, and characterised as a peptide of low molecular weight (<5,000). Its biological activity cannot be attributed to the presence of a nuclease or of a histone fragment. The inhibition of RNA synthesis is due to an ionic interaction between the peptide and DNA. The physicochemical and thermodynamic properties of this interaction are described elsewhere2. We report here the effect(s) of the thymic peptide on transcription of rat liver chromatin. With some obvious limitations3, the in vitro chromatin transcription system is closer to the in vivo state than the purified DNA. Our experiments were prompted by our previous results, which demonstrated that the thymic extract modifies the physicochemical state of DNA and the interactions between DNA and nuclear proteins in the liver of old rats4,5.

Abstract

X-shooter is the first 2nd generation instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). It is a very efficient, single-target, intermediate-resolution spectrograph that was installed at the Cassegrain focus of UT2 in 2009. The instrument covers, in a single exposure, the spectral range from 300 to 2500 nm. It is designed to maximize the sensitivity in this spectral range through dichroic splitting in three arms with optimized optics, coatings, dispersive elements and detectors. It operates at intermediate spectral resolution (R~ 4000−17 000, depending on wavelength and slit width) with fixed échelle spectral format (prism cross-dispersers) in the three arms. It includes a 1.8″ × 4″ integral field unit as an alternative to the 11′′ long slits. A dedicated data reduction package delivers fully calibrated two-dimensional and extracted spectra over the full wavelength range. We describe the main characteristics of the instrument and present its performance as measured during commissioning, science verification and the first months of science operations.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Plancksatellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planckwill provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planckto measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planckscientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

Abstract

Context. The Plancksatellite was successfully launched on May 14th 2009. We have completed the pre-launch calibration measurements of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) on board Planckand their processing.Aims. We present the results ot the pre-launch calibration of HFI in which we have multiple objectives. First, we determine instrumental parameters that cannot be measured in-flight and predict parameters that can. Second, we take the opportunity to operate and understand the instrument under a wide range of anticipated operating conditions. Finally, we estimate the performance of the instrument built.Methods. We obtained our pre-launch calibration results by characterising the component and subsystems, then by calibrating the focal plane at IAS (Orsay) in the Saturne simulator, and later from the tests at the satellite level carried out in the CSL (Liège) cryogenic vacuum chamber. We developed models to estimate the instrument pre-launch parameters when no measurement could be performed.Results. We reliably measure the Planck-HFI instrument characteristics and behaviour, and determine the flight nominal setting of all parameters. The expected in-flight performance exceeds the requirements and is close or superior to the goal specifications.

Context. The High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is one of the two focal instruments of the Planckmission. It will observe the whole sky in six bands in the 100 GHz–1 THz range.Aims. The HFI instrument is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with a sensitivity limited only by fundamental sources: the photon noise of the CMB itself and the residuals left after the removal of foregrounds. The two high frequency bands will provide full maps of the submillimetre sky, featuring mainly extended and point source foregrounds. Systematic effects must be kept at negligible levels or accurately monitored so that the signal can be corrected. This paper describes the HFI design and its characteristics deduced from ground tests and calibration.Methods. The HFI instrumental concept and architecture are feasible only by pushing new techniques to their extreme capabilities, mainly: (i) bolometers working at 100 mK and absorbing the radiation in grids; (ii) a dilution cooler providing 100 mK in microgravity conditions; (iii) a new type of AC biased readout electronics and (iv) optical channels using devices inspired from radio and infrared techniques.Results. The Planck-HFI instrument performance exceeds requirements for sensitivity and control of systematic effects. During ground-based calibration and tests, it was measured at instrument and system levels to be close to or better than the goal specification.

Abstract

The European Space Agency's Plancksatellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planckwill provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planckto measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planckscientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.
