We proposed a concept of a discontinuous LD network perovskite on top of a 3D perovskite film, enabling efficient charge carrier transport. This led to a champion PCE of 24.6% and devices with LD network perovskite exhibit enhanced humidity and thermal stability.

Hydrogels are of interest for a wide range of applications from sensors to drug delivery and tissue engineering. Self-immolative polymers, which depolymerize from end-to-end following a single backbone or end-cap cleavage, offer advantages such as amplification of the stimulus-mediated cleavage event through a cascade degradation process. It is also possible to change the active stimulus by changing only a single end-cap or linker unit. However, there are very few examples of self-immolative polymer hydrogels, and the reported examples exhibited relatively poor stability in their nontriggered state or slow degradation after triggering. Described here is the preparation of hydrogels composed of self-immolative poly(ethyl glyoxylate) (PEtG) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). Hydrogels formed from 2 kg/mol 4-arm PEG and 1.2 kg/mol PEtG with a light-responsive linker end-cap had high gel content (90%), an equilibrium water content of 89%, and a compressive modulus of 26 kPa. The hydrogel degradation could be turned on and off repeatedly through alternating cycles of irradiation and dark storage. Similar cycles could also be used to control the release of the anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib. These results demonstrate the potential for self-immolative hydrogels to afford a high degree of control over responses to stimuli in the context of smart materials for a variety of applications.

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) manifest tissue heterogeneity and are crucial modulators of regional immune responses. The molecular mechanisms regulating tissue ILC2 properties remain elusive. Here, we interrogate the signatures of ILC2s from five tissues at the transcriptome and epigenetic level. We have found that tissue microenvironment strongly shapes ILC2 identities. The intestine induces Aiolos+ILC2s, whereas lung and pancreas enhance Galectin-1+ILC2s. Though being a faithful gut ILC2 feature under the steady state, Aiolos is induced in non-intestinal ILC2s by pro-inflammatory cytokines. Specifically, IL-33 stimulates Aiolos expression in both human and mouse non-intestinal ILC2s. Functionally, Aiolos facilitates eosinophil recruitment by supporting IL-5 production and proliferation of ST2+ILC2s through inhibiting PD-1. At the epigenetic level, ILC2 tissue characters are imprinted by open chromatin regions (OCRs) at non-promoters. Intestinal-specific transcription factor aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) binds to Ikzf3(encoding Aiolos) locus, increases the accessibility of an intestinal ILC2-specific OCR, and promotes the Ikzf3transcription by enhancing H3K27ac. Consequently, Ahr prevents ILC2s entering an “exhausted-like” state through sustaining Aiolos expression. Our work elucidates mechanism of ILC2 tissue adaptation and highlights Aiolos as a potential target of type 2 inflammation.

The development of mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb)-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with low band gap (1.2–1.4 eV) has become critical not only for pushing single-junction devices toward the maximum efficiency given by the Shockley-Queisser limit, but also for enabling all-perovskite tandem devices beyond this limit. However, achieving high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) and long-term device operation stability simultaneously remains a significant challenge for Sn-Pb-based PSCs. Here, we demonstrate near ideal-band-gap (∼1.34 eV) methylammonium-free Sn-Pb-based PSCs with high efficiency (∼20%) and promising operational stability of maintaining >80% of initial PCE over 750 h under maximum-power-point tracking. The key to this success is the use of a SnCl2⋅3FACl complex additive that improves the microstructure and reduces the development of residual stress in the Sn-Pb perovskite thin films, which in turn enhances the efficiency and stability of the Sn-Pb-based ideal-band-gap PSCs.

Halide perovskite semiconductors exhibit ultralow thermal conductivities, making them potentially suitable for thermoelectric applications. Nevertheless, the thermoelectric properties of the prototypical halide perovskite of CH3NH3PbI3have been limited with a very low dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) and a narrow operating temperature window, which are attributed to its poor electronic conductivity and unstable hybrid organic–inorganic composition, respectively. Here, we report the bulk synthesis of a stable, all-inorganic halide perovskite of CsSn0.8Ge0.2I3as a new thermoelectric material, which shows a 10 order of magnitude enhancement in ZT compared with that of CH3NH3PbI3and an operating temperature as high as 473 K. Importantly, this CsSn0.8Ge0.2I3perovskite is also Pb-free in the composition, attesting its high potential as an environmentally friendly candidate material for future thermoelectrics.

The fundamental properties of electric dipoles and their specific roles in perovskite solar cells are discussed.Research progress of interfacial dipoles in perovskite solar cells is summarized.Challenges of deterministic characterization of electric dipoles and future perspectives are highlighted.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) have shown unprecedentedly outstanding performance in the recent years. Nevertheless, due to the weak interaction between polar CH3NH3+(MA+) and inorganic PbI3−sublattices, CH3NH3PbI3dramatically suffers from poor moisture stability, thermal decomposition and device hysteresis. As such, strong electrostatic interactions between cations and anionic frameworks are desired for synergistic improvements of the abovementioned issues. While replacements of I−with Br−and/or Cl−evidently widen optical bandgaps of perovskite materials, compositional modifications can solely be applied on cation components in order to preserve the broad absorption of solar spectrum. Herein, we review the current successful practices in achieving efficient, stable and minimally hysteretic PSCs with lead iodide perovskite systems that employ photoactive cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3), formamidinium lead iodide (HC(NH2)2PbI3, or FAPbI3), MA1−x−y−zFAxCsyRbzPbI3mixed-cation settings as well as two-dimensional butylammonium (C4H9NH3+, or BA+)/MA+, polymeric ammonium (PEI+)/MA+co-cation layered structures. Fundamental aspects behind the stabilization of perovskite phases α-CsPbI3, α-FAPbI3, mixed-cation MA1−x−y−zFAxCsyRbzPbI3and crystallographic alignment of (BA)2(MA)3Pb4I13for effective light absorption and charge transport will be discussed. This review will contribute to the continuous development of photovoltaic technology based on PSCs.

Background: Plant secondary growth depends on the activity of the vascular cambium, which produces xylem and phloem. Wood derived from xylem is the most abundant form of biomass globally and has played key socio-economic and subsistence roles throughout human history. However, despite intensive study of vascular development, the full diversity of cell types and the gene networks engaged are still poorly understood. Results: Here, we have applied an optimized protoplast isolation protocol and RNA sequencing to characterize the high-resolution single-cell transcriptional landscape of highly lignified poplar stems. We identify 20 putative cell clusters with a series of novel cluster-specific marker genes and find that these cells are highly heterogeneous based on the transcriptome. Analysis of these marker genes’ expression dynamics enables reconstruction of the cell differentiation trajectories involved in phloem and xylem development. We find that different cell clusters exhibit distinct patterns of phytohormone responses and emphasize the use of our data to predict potential gene redundancy and identify candidate genes related to vascular development in trees. Conclusions: These findings establish the transcriptional landscape of major cell types of poplar stems at single-cell resolution and provide a valuable resource for investigating basic principles of vascular cell specification and differentiation in trees.
