Researchers at Riga Technical University in Latvia have conducted a study on the effect of goethite nanowire filler on gelatine. They found that the addition of goethite nanowire filler to gelatine made it insoluble in water at room temperature. The researchers also discovered that the solubility of gelatine could be controlled by visible light, with absorption in the alpha-FeOOH resulting in local heating of the nanowires. This paper summarizes available information on soil clay mineralogy in topsoils of Costa Rica, including clay minerals described in B horizons when significantly different from predominant mineralogy in the topsoil. The soil clay suites ("predominant clay groups") emphasized are grouped as: (1) smectites and interstratified clays (Vertisols and other soils with vertic properties), and (2) oxides-hidroxides-oxihidroxides-kaolinite-gibbsite (in Alfisols, Ultisols and Oxisols). Findings in a total of 84 research papers identifying clay minerals on 520 soil samples of Costa Rica are summarized. This review emphasizes on the clay minerals described in the topsoil samples, although clay minerals in the B horizons are also discussed when they are different to predominant mineralogy in the topsoil. Sites where soil clays information is available were geo-referenced, to observe their geographical distribution. In general most of the country possesses soil clays identified, except for the Nicoya Peninsula, the Northern Zone, and the Eastern Talamanca Range. Clay mineralogy suites ("predominant clay groups") were grouped as: (1) vitrous-amorphous-halloysitic (Andisols and other soils with andic properties; (2) smectites and interstratified clays (Vertisols and other soils with vertic properties); (3) oxides-hidroxides-oxihidroxides-kaolinite-gibbsite (Alfisols, Ultisols and Oxisols); Plus a large area of soils with mixed clay mineralogy, found in places with little or no development (Entisols and Inceptisols). In this article, mineral collector Barbara L. Muntyan discusses how she got interested in mineral collection and presents photographs of several minerals including Rhodochrosite on quartz, Goethite on smoky quartz and Amazonite which are present in her collection.

Mineralogy and chemical composition are presented for a chert-ironstone bed that overlies the Úrkút Mn deposit. This bed is mottled green-brown in its lower and upper parts, which are composed of quartz, goethite and celadonite. These parts of the bed are interpreted to be strongly altered tuffs, reflecting oxidic, low-temperature alteration of a hydrated, Fe-rich, Al-poor tuff, and K and Mg uptake from seawater. The middle part of the bed is a mineralized bacterial mat (quartz, goethite). Textures resembling bacterial cells and colonies are common, with wavy, bulbous laminations composed of mounds overlying a mesh-work stromatolite-like texture constructed of micrometre-size Fe oxides. This bed is concordant with the underlying Mn deposit and marks the termination of Mn accumulation. Although no genetic connection exists between the two, the rocks adjacent to the contact record the oceanographic and bottom-water conditions extant when accumulation of one of the major Mn deposits of Europe ended, when the Transdanubian Range was located in the middle of the Adria-Apulian microcontinent between the Neotethys and Atlantic-Ligurian seaways. A pyroclastic origin for part of the bed has significance for the Toarcian of Central Europe because evidence of volcanism occurring at that time is otherwise sparse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article highlights the study on the probable relationships among goethite, lepidocrocite and two generations of amethystine quartz in a skunk calcite specimen found at the Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil. The author states that the earliest precipitation of iron oxides as goethite initiates the formation of skunk calcite. The study shows that quartz and calcite in the Ametista specimen do not have epitactic relationship.

The article focuses on Volcano limpets, a gastropods with cone-shaped shells found in Pacific coast of California, along with information on a study published in Journal of the Royal Society, Interface, reveals that fibers creating the teeth limpets are made an iron-based material called goethite.

This article examines how the martian soil became rich in colorful and magnetic iron oxides. A team led by Vincent Chevrier weathered magnetite, iron, and pyrrhotite powder for a year in simulated wet and dry martian atmospheres. Chevrier's team saw no changes in the magnetite, suggesting that on Mars, the mineral simply weathers out of the bedrock. Metallic iron remained unchanged, even after a year, in a dry atmosphere. But in a wet one, it altered rapidly. The sample turned deep, dusky red by day 75 and finally became dark yellow-brown. The pyrrhotite turned yellow-red after 5 days in the dry atmosphere and took about 100 days to turn a dark, brownish red in the wet. Both tests produced martian-type minerals: goethite, sulfur, and tiny amounts of iron sulfates, including jarosite, found at Meridiani Planum.
