During 2019–21, the AutoTest VIH, Libre d'accéder à la connaissance de son Statut (ATLAS) programme distributed around 380 000 HIV self-testing kits to key populations, including female sex workers, men who have sex with men, and their partners, in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal. We aimed to estimate the effects of the ATLAS programme and national scale-up of HIV self-test distribution on HIV diagnosis, HIV treatment coverage, HIV incidence, and HIV-related mortality.

Quantum technologies would benefit from the development of high-performance quantum defects acting as single-photon emitters or spin-photon interfaces. Finding such a quantum defect in silicon is especially appealing in view of its favorable spin bath and high processability. While some color centers in silicon have been emerging in quantum applications, there remains a need to search for and develop new high-performance quantum emitters. By searching a high-throughput computational database of more than 22,000 charged complex defects in silicon, we identify a series of defects formed by a group III element combined with carbon ((A–C)Siwith A = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl) and substituting on a silicon site. These defects are analogous structurally, electronically, and chemically to the well-known T center in silicon ((C–C–H)Si), and their optical properties are mainly driven by an unpaired electron on the carbon porbital. They all emit in the telecom, and some of these color centers show improved properties compared to the T center in terms of computed radiative lifetime, emission efficiency, or smaller optical linewidth. The kinetic barrier computations and previous experimental evidence show that these T center-like defects can be formed through the capture of a diffusing carbon by a substitutional group III atom. We also show that the synthesis of hydrogenated T center-like defects followed by a dehydrogenation annealing step could facilitate the formation of these defects. Our work motivates further studies on the synthesis and control of this new family of quantum defects and demonstrates the use of high-throughput computational screening to discover new color center candidates.

This paper is one of the first studies focusing on phase and microstructure formation mechanisms during reactive sintering of AlxCoCrFeNi (x = 0.3, 1) high entropy alloys (HEAs). The alloys have been prepared by mechanical activation followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Both powders are subjected to gluing to the milling vials and the phenomenon intensifies with Al content, resulting in a more important mechanical alloying delay for the equiatomic composition. The temperature influence on phase and microstructure formation was investigated by SPS from 550 to 1100 °C. Al0.3CoCrFeNi reactive sintering led to a face-centered cubic (FCC) solid solution with a grain size around hundreds of nanometers with nanometric intergranular B2 precipitates which content and size reduced with the temperature increase. Grain growth was observed at prior particle boundaries due to dynamic recrystallization, a phenomenon that can be controlled through modification of the milling and sintering steps, leading thus to tailored grain sizes. For the AlCoCrFeNi composition, temperature increase favors secondary FCC formation and leads to sigma phase precipitation. A dual homogeneous-heterogeneous microstructure is obtained due to the important gluing leading to insufficient milling. The dynamic recrystallization at prior particle boundaries promotes also body-centered cubic (BCC) to FCC phase transition. Therefore, the proposed reactive sintering route allows to obtain, for the equiatomic composition, alloys exhibiting very fine microstructures, with higher FCC fraction content than by conventional metallurgy processes.

Captan dislodgeable foliar residues (DFRs) were determined by following the applications of this fungicide in an apple orchard. The study comprised an investigation of the variability of captan DFR values and 14 days of DFR monitoring to assess kinetic modeling. A method combining solid-phase microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF-MS) was developed for the quantification of captan residues from DFR aqueous extracts. The results evidenced that (1) sampling parameters such as the position of the tree in a row and the height of foliar significantly influenced captan DFR levels (247–1450 ng·cm–2), highlighting the need to implement a comprehensive sampling strategy; (2) the DFR captan dissipation kinetic model best matched with a biphasic one, with half-lives of DFRcaptanof 3.4 and 12.8 days, respectively, for the initial rapid phase 1 decline (day 0–5) and the slower phase 2 decline phase (day 6–14). Furthermore, through DFR measurements, the potential dermal exposure (PDE) of workers was assessed using transfer coefficients (TCs) from the literature. Compared to the acceptable operator exposure levels (AOELs), the results showed that the re-entry interval for captan may not sufficiently protect workers whose arms, hands, and legs are not covered.

Recent research highlighted significant marine biological activity during the Arctic winter, with poorly known implications for the biological carbon pump. We used moored instruments to (1) track the development of the pelagic food web of a high‐Arctic marine ecosystem from winter to spring, and (2) assess the role of zooplankton‐mediated processes in the sinking export of particulate organic carbon (POC). Zooplankton collected by a sediment trap at 40 m depth in Kongsfjorden showed a shift in species composition in February coinciding with an inflow of Atlantic water and the return of sunlight. The Atlantic copepod Calanus finmarchicusand the Arctic Calanus glacialisbecame dominant in the post‐inflow assemblage of large mesozooplankton. However, large copepods were never abundant (0.3–4.6 ind m−3) in January–April in the upper 40 m. Despite the low chlorophyll fluorescence, POC export increased substantially, from 2–13 mg C m−2d−1in January–February to 13–35 mg C m−2d−1in March–April 2014. By late March, zooplankton fecal pellets contributed largely (23–100%) to this significant POC export before the phytoplankton bloom. The lack of change in copepod and euphausiid population sizes suggests that enhanced feeding activity in the surface layer supported the increasing fecal pellet export. Our results revealed the swift response of active zooplankton in winter, evidenced by increased carbon export, to improved food availability.

The occurrence of suicidal behaviors increases during adolescence. Hypersensitivity to negative social signals and deficits in cognitive control are putative mechanisms of suicidal behaviors, which necessitate confirmation in youths. Multidomain functional neuroimaging could enhance the identification of patients at suicidal risk beyond standard clinical measures. Three groups of adolescents (N= 96; 78% females, age = 11.6–18.1) were included: patients with depressive disorders and previous suicide attempts (SA, n= 29); patient controls with depressive disorders but without any suicide attempt history (PC, n= 35); and healthy controls (HC, n= 32). We scanned participants with 3T-MRI during social inclusion/exclusion (Cyberball Game) and response inhibition (Go-NoGo) tasks. Neural activation was indexed by the blood-oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) of the hemodynamic response during three conditions in the Cyberball Game (“Control condition”, “Social Inclusion”, and “Social Exclusion”), and two conditions in Go-NoGo task (“Go” and “NoGo” blocks). ANCOVA-style analysis identified group effects across three whole-brain contrasts: 1) NoGo vs. Go, 2) Social inclusion vs. control condition, 3) Social exclusion vs. control condition. We found that SA had lower activation in the left insula during social inclusion vs. control condition compared to PC and HC. Moreover, SA compared to PC had higher activity in the right middle prefrontal gyrus during social exclusion vs. control condition, and in bilateral precentral gyri during NoGo vs. Go conditions. Task-related behavioral and self-report measures (Self-reported emotional reactivity in the Cyberball Game, response times and number of errors in the Go-NoGo Task) did not discriminate groups. In conclusion, adolescent suicidal behaviors are likely associated with neural alterations related to the processing of social perception and response inhibition. Further research, involving prospective designs and diverse cohorts of patients, is necessary to explore the potential of neuroimaging as a tool in understanding the emergence and progression of suicidal behaviors.

Thin-film photovoltaics (PV) offers a path to decarbonize global energy production. Unfortunately, existing thin-film solar absorbers have major issues associated with either elemental abundance, stability, or performance. Entirely new and disruptive materials platforms are rarely discovered, and their search is traditionally slow and serendipitous. Here, we report a first-principles high-throughput (HT) computational screening for new solar absorbers among 40,000 known inorganic materials. Next to band gap and carrier effective masses, we also use computed intrinsic defects as they can limit the carrier lifetime. We identify the Zintl-phosphide BaCd2P2as a potential high-efficiency solar absorber. Follow-up experiments confirm the promises of BaCd2P2, highlighting an optimal band gap, bright photoluminescence (PL), and long carrier lifetime, even in unoptimized powder samples. Importantly, BaCd2P2contains no critical elements and is stable in air and water. Our work demonstrates how computational screening combined with experiments can accelerate the search for photovoltaic materials.

Debate remains around the anatomical origins of specific brain cell subtypes and lineage relationships within the human forebrain1–7. Thus, direct observation in the mature human brain is critical for a complete understanding of its structural organization and cellular origins. Here we utilize brain mosaic variation within specific cell types as distinct indicators for clonal dynamics, denoted as cell-type-specific mosaic variant barcode analysis. From four hemispheres and two different human neurotypical donors, we identified 287 and 780 mosaic variants, respectively, that were used to deconvolve clonal dynamics. Clonal spread and allele fractions within the brain reveal that local hippocampal excitatory neurons are more lineage-restricted than resident neocortical excitatory neurons or resident basal ganglia GABAergic inhibitory neurons. Furthermore, simultaneous genome transcriptome analysis at both a cell-type-specific and a single-cell level suggests a dorsal neocortical origin for a subgroup of DLX1+inhibitory neurons that disperse radially from an origin shared with excitatory neurons. Finally, the distribution of mosaic variants across 17 locations within one parietal lobe reveals that restriction of clonal spread in the anterior–posterior axis precedes restriction in the dorsal–ventral axis for both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. Thus, cell-type-resolved somatic mosaicism can uncover lineage relationships governing the development of the human forebrain.

Nanoporous materials have attracted great attention for gas storage, but achieving high volumetric storage capacity remains a challenge. Here, by using neutron powder diffraction, volumetric gas adsorption, inelastic neutron scattering and first-principles calculations, we investigate a magnesium borohydride framework that has small pores and a partially negatively charged non-flat interior for hydrogen and nitrogen uptake. Hydrogen and nitrogen occupy distinctly different adsorption sites in the pores, with very different limiting capacities of 2.33 H2and 0.66 N2per Mg(BH4)2. Molecular hydrogen is packed extremely densely, with about twice the density of liquid hydrogen (144 g H2per litre of pore volume). We found a penta-dihydrogen cluster where H2molecules in one position have rotational freedom, whereas H2molecules in another position have a well-defined orientation and a directional interaction with the framework. This study reveals that densely packed hydrogen can be stabilized in small-pore materials at ambient pressures.

La rodilla es la articulación más expuesta en la práctica deportiva del niño. La frecuencia y la aparente benignidad de las lesiones periféricas no deben hacer que se olviden las numerosas fuentes de error. La hemartrosis postraumática suele ser el reflejo de lesiones articulares graves. La escasa fiabilidad de la exploración física en este contexto justifica la realización de una resonancia magnética. Esta prueba de imagen permite el diagnóstico de una avulsión puramente cartilaginosa del pivote en los más jóvenes (menores de 9 años) y evaluar las lesiones meniscoligamentarias asociadas a menudo a la ruptura del ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA). Además de las lesiones meniscales clásicas, surgen las lesiones denominadas nuevas (rampa, raíces) que afectan al adolescente en cerca de un tercio de los casos de ruptura intraligamentaria del LCA. Parece que el niño pequeño no se encuentra en la misma situación que el adolescente. En caso de afectación del LCA sobre todo por avulsión ósea o cartilaginosa, se observan menos lesiones asociadas y la reinserción artroscópica proporciona resultados satisfactorios a pesar del riesgo de artrofibrosis. En caso de lesión intraligamentaria (del LCA), la tolerancia parece mejor, con menos inestabilidad. El tratamiento conservador mantiene en tal caso un lugar, con la condición de ser estricto respecto a los criterios de elegibilidad y el protocolo neuromuscular y de garantizar un seguimiento estrecho. En el preadolescente y el adolescente, la incidencia de lesiones intraligamentarias del LCA se ha disparado en las últimas décadas. El lugar de la reconstrucción ligamentaria con reparación de las lesiones meniscales es primordial, porque predomina la inestabilidad. El riesgo de epifisiodesis por lesión de la fisis, aunque es bajo en los equipos experimentados, es máximo a medida que se acerca su cierre. La técnica deberá ser rigurosa y se recomienda un dominio perfecto de la reparación meniscal. Las opciones técnicas de reconstrucción son propias de cada escuela y ninguna ha demostrado una superioridad sobre las demás. La reanudación del deporte tras la reconstrucción del LCA del niño debe realizarse de forma diferida, debido a una ligamentización retardada, en comparación con el adulto. Los trabajos recientes y prospectivos ponen de relieve el gran riesgo de nueva lesión (rerruptura y ruptura del LCA contralateral).

This paper proposes to solve the dynamics of the Kirchhoff-Carrier nonlinear string model using the finite elements method. In order to ensure the power balance of the resulting finite dimensional model it is rewritten in the Port-Hamiltonian System (PHS) formalism. Using a discrete gradient and a quadratization of the Hamiltonian, an explicit power-preserving numerical scheme is proposed. Results of simulation are presented.

In a search of higher income and lower dependence on intermediaries in the food chain, family farms are increasingly adopting short food supply chains (SFSCs). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of farm entrepreneurs and their family in defining the implementation of SFSCs. We use the 2010 Exhaustive Agricultural Census of French farms and implement a logit model. The results underline the fact that young and educated farm entrepreneurs are more likely to promote SFSCs. The presence of the family on the farm as well as the involvement of family members play a key role in the choice of SFSCs. However, the marital status of a farm entrepreneur and the involvement of their spouse have no specific influence. This research sheds new light on the key role played by families in supporting productive and marketing strategies of farms.

IMPORTANCE: Intensive interventions are provided to young children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP), classically focused on the upper extremity despite the frequent impairment of gross motor function. Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy Including Lower Extremities (HABIT-ILE) effectively improves manual dexterity and gross motor function in school-aged children. OBJECTIVE: To verify if HABIT-ILE would improve manual abilities in young children with UCP more than usual motor activity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective randomized clinical trial (November 2018 to December 2021), including 2 parallel groups and a 1:1 allocation, recruitment took place at European university hospitals, cerebral palsy specialized centers, and spontaneous applications at 3 sites: Brussels, Belgium; Brest, France; and Pisa, Italy. Matched (age at inclusion, lesion type, cause of cerebral palsy, and affected side) pairs randomization was performed. Young children were assessed at baseline (T0), 2 weeks after baseline (T1), and 3 months after baseline (T2). Health care professionals and assessors of main outcomes were blinded to group allocation. At least 23 young children (in each group) aged 12 to 59 months with spastic/dyskinetic UCP and able to follow instructions were needed. Exclusion criteria included uncontrolled seizures, scheduled botulinum toxin injections, orthopedic surgery scheduled during the 6 months before or during the study period, severe visual/cognitive impairments, or contraindications to magnetic resonance imaging. INTERVENTIONS: Two weeks of usual motor activity including usual rehabilitation (control group) vs 2 weeks (50 hours) of HABIT-ILE (HABIT-ILE group). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Primary outcome: Assisting Hand Assessment (AHA); secondary outcomes: Gross Motor Function Measure-66 (GMFM-66), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT), and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). RESULTS: Of 50 recruited young children (26 girls [52%], median age; 35.3 months for HABIT-ILE group; median age, 32.8 months for control group), 49 were included in the final analyses. Change in AHA score from T0 to T2 was significantly greater in the HABIT-ILE group (adjusted mean score difference [MD], 5.19; 95% CI, 2.84-7.55; P < .001). Changes in GMFM-66 (MD, 4.72; 95% CI, 2.66-6.78), PEDI-CAT daily activities (MD, 1.40; 95% CI, 0.29-2.51), COPM performance (MD, 3.62; 95% CI, 2.91-4.32), and satisfaction (MD, 3.53; 95% CI, 2.70-4.36) scores were greater in the HABIT ILE group. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this clinical trial, early HABIT-ILE was shown to be an effective treatment to improve motor performance in young children with UCP. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) since its emergence in December 2019. As of January 2024, there has been over 774 million reported cases and 7 million deaths worldwide. While vaccination efforts have been successful in reducing the severity of the disease and decreasing the transmission rate, the development of effective therapeutics against SARS-CoV-2 remains a critical need. The main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 is an essential enzyme required for viral replication and has been identified as a promising target for drug development. In this study, we report the identification of novel Mpro inhibitors, using a combination of deep reinforcement learning for de novodrug design with 3D pharmacophore/shape-based alignment and privileged fragment match count scoring components followed by hit expansions and molecular docking approaches. Our experimentally validated results show that 3 novel series exhibit potent inhibitory activity against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro, with IC50values ranging from 1.3 μM to 2.3 μM and a high degree of selectivity. These findings represent promising starting points for the development of new antiviral therapies against COVID-19.

Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) is an aggressive hematopoietic disorder of infancy and early childhood driven by constitutively active RAS signaling and characterized by abnormal proliferation of the granulocytic-monocytic blood cell lineage. Most JMML patients require hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for cure, but the risk of relapse is high for some JMML subtypes. Azacitidine was shown to effectively reduce leukemic burden in a subset of JMML patients. However, variable response rates to azacitidine and the risk of drug resistance highlight the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Since RAS signaling is known to interfere with the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, we combined various BH3 mimetic drugs with azacitidine in our previously established patient-derived xenograft model. We demonstrate that JMML cells require both MCL-1 and BCL-XLfor survival, and that these proteins can be effectively targeted by azacitidine and BH3 mimetic combination treatment. In vivo azacitidine acts via downregulation of antiapoptotic MCL-1 and upregulation of proapoptotic BH3-only. The combination of azacitidine with BCL-XLinhibition was superior to BCL-2 inhibition in eliminating JMML cells. Our findings emphasize the need to develop clinically applicable MCL-1 or BCL-XLinhibitors in order to enable novel combination therapies in JMML refractory to standard therapy.

Thin-film materials with large electromechanical responses are fundamental enablers of next-generation micro-/nano-electromechanical applications. Conventional electromechanical materials (for example, ferroelectrics and relaxors), however, exhibit severely degraded responses when scaled down to submicrometre-thick films due to substrate constraints (clamping). This limitation is overcome, and substantial electromechanical responses in antiferroelectric thin films are achieved through an unconventional coupling of the field-induced antiferroelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition and the substrate constraints. A detilting of the oxygen octahedra and lattice-volume expansion in all dimensions are observed commensurate with the phase transition using operandoelectron microscopy, such that the in-plane clamping further enhances the out-of-plane expansion, as rationalized using first-principles calculations. In turn, a non-traditional thickness scaling is realized wherein an electromechanical strain (1.7%) is produced from a model antiferroelectric PbZrO3film that is just 100 nm thick. The high performance and understanding of the mechanism provide a promising pathway to develop high-performance micro-/nano-electromechanical systems.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) devices have emerged as an effective way to control the propagation channels for enhancing the end-users’ performance. However, RIS optimization involves configuring the radio frequency response of a large number of radiating elements, which is challenging in real-world applications due to high computational complexity. In this letter, a model-free cross-entropy (CE) algorithm is proposed to optimize the binary RIS configuration for improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. One key advantage of the proposed method is that it only requires system performance indicators, e.g., the received SNR, without the need for channel models or channel state information. Both simulations and experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed CE algorithm. This letter provides an experimental demonstration of the channel hardening effect in a multi-antenna RIS-assisted wireless system under rich multipath fading.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are electromagnetically passive controllable structures, deflecting incident wave beams in tunable directions. A usual way to design RIS using metasurfaces (MSs) is based on the approximation in which the reflective properties of a uniform MS are attributed to unit cells of the nonuniform one. We call this approximation the reflection locality (RL) and analyze its applicability. We prove that RL holds for a wide range of incidence and deflection angles if and only if uniform MSs based on which the nonuniform one is generated possess so-called angular stability (AS). AS of an infinite uniform MS (that we call generic MS) means that its reflection coefficient is independent of the incidence angle for both TE and TM polarizations.

Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to describe Canadian youth mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms and suicidality. Methods: We searched four databases up to February 2023 for longitudinal or repeated cross-sectional studies reporting on changes in depressive and anxiety symptoms, suicidality, or related services utilization among young people under 25 years old residing in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed for studies comparing depressive and anxiety symptoms from before to during the first, second, and third COVID-19 waves (up to June 2021), and between COVID-19 waves. Other studies were described narratively. Risk of bias was assessed using an adapted Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist. Synthesis: Of the 7916 records screened, 35 articles met inclusion criteria for this review. Included studies were highly heterogeneous in design, population, and type of change investigated, and many had a high risk of bias. The meta-analyses found that depressive symptoms worsened minimally from pre-pandemic to wave 1 but returned to pre-pandemic levels by wave 2. Anxiety symptoms were broadly comparable from pre-pandemic to waves 1 and 2 but worsened from waves 1 to 3 and from pre-pandemic to wave 1 for girls. The narrative review included several studies that provided inconclusive evidence of increases in services utilization. Conclusion: The current evidence is limited and highly heterogeneous, making it insufficient to draw definitive conclusions regarding the short- to medium-term impact of the pandemic on youth mental health in Canada. Obtaining better mental health surveillance among Canadian youth is imperative.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to peer victimization is relatively common. However, little is known about its developmental course and its effect on impairment associated with mental illnesses. We aimed to identify groups of children following differential trajectories of peer victimization from ages 6 to 13 years and to examine predictive associations of these trajectories with mental health in adolescence. METHODS: Participants were members of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, a prospective cohort of 2120 children born in 1997/98 who were followed until age 15 years. We included 1363 participants with self-reported victimization from ages 6 to 13 years and data available on their mental health status at 15 years. RESULTS: We identified 3 trajectories of peer victimization. The 2 prevailing groups were participants with little or moderate exposure to victimization (441/1685 [26.2%] and 1000/1685 [59.3%], respectively); the third group (244 [14.5%]) had been chronically exposed to the most severe and long-lasting levels of victimization. The most severely victimized individuals had greater odds of reporting debilitating depressive or dysthymic symptoms (odds ratio [OR] 2.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.27-5.17), debilitating generalized anxiety problems (OR 3.27, CI 1.646.51) and suicidality (OR 3.46, CI 1.53-7.81) at 15 years than those exposed to the lowest levels of victimization, after adjustment for sex, childhood mental health, family hardship and victimization perpetration. The association with suicidality remained significant after controlling for concurrent symptoms of depression or dysthymia and generalized anxiety problems. INTERPRETATION: Adolescents who were most severely victimized by peers had an increased risk of experiencing severe symptoms consistent with mental health problems. The growth of bilayers of two-dimensional (2D) materials on conventional 3D semiconductors results in 2D/3D hybrid heterostructures, which can provide additional advantages over more established 3D semiconductors while retaining some specificities of 2D materials. Understanding and exploiting these phenomena hinge on knowing the electronic properties and the hybridization of these structures. Here, we demonstrate that a rhombohedral-stacked bilayer (AB stacking) can be obtained by molecular beam epitaxy growth of tungsten diselenide (WSe2) on a gallium phosphide (GaP) substrate. We confirm the presence of 3R-stacking of the WSe2bilayer structure using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Also, we report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on our rhombohedral-stacked WSe2bilayer grown on a GaP(111)B substrate. Our ARPES measurements confirm the expected valence band structure of WSe2with the band maximum located at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone. The epitaxial growth of WSe2/GaP(111)B helps to understand the fundamental properties of these 2D/3D heterostructures, toward their implementation in future devices.

Over one hundred years have passed since the discovery of the p-type transparent conducting material copper iodide, predating the concept of the “electron–hole” itself. Supercentenarian status notwithstanding, little is understood about the charge transport mechanisms in CuI. Herein, a variety of modeling techniques are used to investigate the charge transport properties of CuI, and limitations to the hole mobility over experimentally achievable carrier concentrations are discussed. Poor dielectric response is responsible for extensive scattering from ionized impurities at degenerately doped carrier concentrations, while phonon scattering is found to dominate at lower carrier concentrations. A phonon-limited hole mobility of 162 cm2V–1s–1is predicted at room temperature. The simulated charge transport properties for CuI are compared to existing experimental data, and the implications for future device performance are discussed. In addition to charge transport calculations, the defect chemistry of CuI is investigated with hybrid functionals, revealing that reasonably localized holes from the copper vacancy are the predominant source of charge carriers. The chalcogens S and Se are investigated as extrinsic dopants, where it is found that despite relatively low defect formation energies, they are unlikely to act as efficient electron acceptors due to the strong localization of holes and subsequent deep transition levels.

Thermal ablation of localized prostate tumors via endocavitary ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) faces challenges that could be alleviated by better integration of dual modalities (imaging/therapy). Capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers (CMUTs) may provide an alternative to existing piezoelectric technologies by exhibiting advanced integration capability through miniaturization, broad frequency bandwidth, and potential for high electroacoustic efficiency. An endocavitary dual-mode USgHIFU probe was built to investigate the potential of using CMUT technologies for transrectal prostate cancer ablative therapy. The USgHIFU probe included a planar 64-element annular high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) CMUT array ( ${f} _{\text {HIFU}}$ = 3 MHz) surrounding a 256-element linear imaging CMUT array. Acoustic characterization of the HIFU array included 3-D pressure field mapping and radiation force balance measurements. Ex vivo proof-of-concept experiments consisted in generating HIFU thermal ablations with the CMUT probe on porcine liver tissues. The planar CMUT probe enabled HIFU dynamic focusing (distance range: 32–72 mm) while providing acoustic surface intensities of 1 W/cm2 that allowed producing elementary ex vivo ablations in depth of liver tissue ( ${L} \times {W}\,\,\approx \,\,10\times5$ mm). Combinations of dynamic focusing, along with probe rotation and translation produced larger thermal ablations ( ${L} \times {W}\,\,\approx \,\,20\times20$ mm) by juxtaposing multiple elementary ablations, consistent with expected results obtained through numerical modeling. The technical feasibility of using a USgHIFU probe, fully developed using CMUTs for tissue ablation purposes, was demonstrated. The HIFU-CMUT array showed tissue ablation capabilities with volumes compatible with localized cancer targeting, thus providing assets for further development of focal therapies.
