This article investigates the multi-material topology optimization (MMTO) of the three-phase stator of an electrical machine. The density-based optimization framework uses a gradient descent on the physical properties of the candidate materials (magnetic polarization and current density). The results indicate that a smoothing procedure is necessary to avoid non-manufacturable designs and promote a broader exploration of solutions. They also highlight a current angle shifting due to the presence of permanent magnets from the beginning of the optimization. The current angle is, therefore, added to the optimization variables to address this issue. An efficient optimization procedure that couples both techniques is proposed to improve the performance of the algorithm. The following hybrid method returns symmetrical results that perform better than the asymmetrical structures obtained with the other techniques applied independently, indicating that the asymmetry represents a local optimum.

the best ways in order to reduce fuel consumption for vehicles. It consists of associating an electric motor next to the classical thermal machine. In this embedded system, the efficiency and the torque per unit mass are very important. So it seems to be a good idea to use a permanent magnet synchronous machine, which is recognized for satisfying these two objectives. Since the allocated volume is rather flat, axial flux topologies are interesting. This paper’s goal is to propose an optimal first design method for such structures, given the allocated volume and the machine requirements.

L'introduction d'un circuit amortisseur dans une machine à courant continu, alimentée par des courants ondulés, améliore notablement son fonctionnement. On présente dans cette étude, une méthode d'optimisation de cet enroulement supplémentaire. La f.e.m. de transformation générée par l'enroulement inducteur dans la section en commutation, les pertes par effet Joule dans l'amortisseur et l'inducteur, ainsi que le temps de réponse dynamique de la machine sont les critères de l'optimisation. Leurs variations en fonction de la section totale de l'enroulement amortisseur peuvent nous conduire à un amortisseur optimal.

L'étude du bruit et des vibrations dans le matériel électrique fait intervenir plusieurs systèmes physiques couplés. Le modèle complet est complexe et ne permet pas d'études paramétriques simples de la structure de la machine, de son alimentation et cela pour différents points de fonctionnement. Dans cet article est présenté un modèle simple permettant de prédire l'accélération radiale d'un Moteur à Réluctance Variable à Double Saillance (M.R.V.D.S.) en fonction du courant d'alimentation. Ce modèle permettra d'étudier ultérieurement l'influence de l'alimentation sur le comportement vibratoire de la machine. En premier lieu, les différentes sources de vibrations d'une machine tournante sont évoquées, pour finalement ne s'intéresser qu'aux efforts d'origine magnétique qui sont prépondérants dans les M.R.V.D.S. Le calcul de ces efforts en fonction du courant est présenté dans le cas d'une machine fonctionnant en régime linéaire (sans saturation magnétique). Ces efforts sont décomposés en une force tangentielle créant le couple de rotation et une force radiale ne créant aucun couple. Les formulations sont appliquées à une M.R.V.D.S. de type 6/4 d'une puissance de 30 W. Une identification expérimentale du comportement vibratoire de la machine à rotor bloqué et en monophasé permet de connaître la réponse de la structure à ces efforts magnétiques. Cette réponse mécanique est identifiée à une fonction de transfert. Le modèle complet prend en compte l'alimentation de la machine, la relation entre le courant d'ajimentation et les efforts ainsi que la réponse vibratoire de la machine à ces efforts. Enfin des résultats expérimentaux originaux permettent de valider le modèle dans le cadre des hypothèses définies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present a novel extended hybrid analytical method (HAM) that leverages a two-dimensional (2-D) coupling between the semi-analytical Maxwell–Fourier analysis and the finite element method (FEM) in Cartesian coordinates. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed model is applied to flat permanent-magnet linear electrical machines with rotor-dual. The magnetic field solution across the entire machine is established by coupling an exact analytical model (AM), designed for regions with relative magnetic permeability equal to unity, with a FEM in ferromagnetic regions. The coupling between AM and FEM occurs bidirectionally (x, y) along the edges separating teeth regions and their adjacent regions through applied boundary conditions. Findings: The developed HAM yields accurate results concerning the magnetic flux density distribution, cogging force and induced voltage under various operating conditions, including magnetic or geometric parameters. A comparison with hybrid finite-difference and hybrid reluctance network methods demonstrates very satisfactory agreement with 2-D FEM. Originality/value: The original contribution of this paper lies in establishing a direct coupling between the semi-analytical Maxwell–Fourier analysis and the FEM, particularly at the interface between adjacent regions with differing magnetic parameters. The computation of magnetically induced vibrations within an electrical machine is a task that presents certain difficulties. Yet, the results of such a computation will be of utmost importance in the magnetic and vibratory design of a machine as well as of its power supply. Since the damping term of a machine assembled on a workbench is practically impossible to predict, as are the sizeable number of coupled phenomena that cause vibrations, there is in essence no accurate theoretical model able to compute vibrations during the initial design stages of the machine. Moreover, a model that is complete, yet cumbersome to implement, does not in general enable the type of parametric studies necessary for developing a complex machine-converter set to be carried out. In the paper, therefore, the authors have not only adopted some simplifying hypotheses, but also have combined both theoretical and experimental results to construct such a model. The model consists of a mechanical unit which represents the machine modal characteristics and allows, in particular, development of a transfer function between the magnetic forces and the stator vibrations. These forces are of a global order of magnitude and have been computed with the help of a second magnetic unit for which it has been assumed that the distribution of stresses exerts no influence whatsoever on the acceleration at the stator periphery. A final electrical unit makes it possible for us to compute the current present in the phase. The validity of this model is then verified experimentally, and an application example is provided.

The present paper presents a method of resolving differential equations that proceed from the modelling of the commutation phenomena in a direct current machine.The validity of the method is discussed by comparing the calculated curves to the experimental ones. This study is limited to the case of perfectly smooth currents with brushes covering three commutator bars.

In order to predict the radial vibration of the stator core of a Doubly Salient Switched Reluctance Motor (D.S.S.R.M.), different causes of vibrations are considered. In this kind of machine, electromagnetic stress is found to be the most significant cause of vibrations. The local magnetic stress distribution, depending on magnetic field and finally on the phase current, is calculated in the case of an unsatured operation. This magnetic stress acts in two ways: a tangential force (torque) and a radial attractive force. This radial force excites the vibration modes of the stator, this vibration behaviour is measured in the aligned position and is identified as a transfert function. Finally several experiments show the good accuracy of this simple model. This model will be later used to study the effect of phase current and of static converter on vibration and acoustic noise emitted by the D.S.S.R.M. The vibrations and the acoustic noise produced by switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are linked to current wave form and to their structural properties. The authors carried out a parametric study to quantify the influence of the stator geometry upon vibratory behaviour of a 6/4 SRM. Their study shows the important influence of stator yoke thickness on vibration reduction compared to the other stator shape parameters. Moreover, a less noisy structure is proposed, based on the simultaneous analysis of electromagnetic performances and elastic characteristics.

Purpose: This study aims to propose a general methodology to handle multimaterial filtering for density-based topology optimization containing periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions, which are expected to reduce the simulation time of electrical machines. The optimization of the material distribution in a permanent magnet synchronous machine rotor illustrates the relevance of this approach. Design/methodology/approach: The optimization algorithm relies on an augmented Lagrangian with a projected gradient descent. The 2D finite element method computes the physical and adjoint states to evaluate the objective function and its sensitivities. Concerning regularization, a mathematical development leads to a multimaterial convolution filtering methodology that is consistent with the boundary conditions and helps eliminate artifacts. Findings: The method behaves as expected and shows the superiority of multimaterial topology optimization over bimaterial topology optimization for the chosen test case. Unlike the standard approach that uses a cropped convolution kernel, the proposed methodology does not artificially reflect the limits of the simulation domain in the optimized material distribution. Originality/value: Although filtering is a standard tool in topology optimization, no attention has previously been paid to the influence of periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions when dealing with different natures of materials. The comparison between the bimaterial and multimaterial topology optimization of a permanent magnet machine rotor without symmetry constraints constitutes another originality of this work. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is mainly to develop the adjoint method within the method of magnetic moment (MMM) and thus, to provide an efficient new way to solve topology optimization problems in magnetostatic to design 3D-magnetic circuits. Design/methodology/approach: First, the MMM is recalled and the optimization design problem is reformulated as a partial derivative equation-constrained optimization problem where the constraint is the Maxwell equation in magnetostatic. From the Karush–Khun–Tucker optimality conditions, a new problem is derived which depends on a Lagrangian parameter. This problem is called the adjoint problem and the Lagrangian parameter is called the adjoint parameter. Thus, solving the direct and the adjoint problems, the values of the objective function as well as its gradient can be efficiently obtained. To obtain a topology optimization code, a semi isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) relaxed-penalization approach associated with an optimization based on gradient descent steps has been developed and used. Findings: In this paper, the authors provide theoretical results which make it possible to compute the gradient via the continuous adjoint of the MMMs. A code was developed and it was validated by comparing it with a finite difference method. Thus, a topology optimization code associating this adjoint based gradient computations and SIMP penalization technique was developed and its efficiency was shown by solving a 3D design problem in magnetostatic. Research limitations/implications: This research is limited to the design of systems in magnetostatic using the linearity of the materials. The simple examples, the authors provided, are just done to validate our theoretical results and some extensions of our topology optimization code have to be done to solve more interesting design cases. Originality/value: The problem of design is a 3D magnetic circuit. The 2D optimization problems are well known and several methods of resolution have been introduced, but rare are the problems using the adjoint method in 3D. Purpose: This paper aims to optimize passive damper system (PDS) design by configuring its parameters to improve its performance and behavior in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). Design/methodology/approach: First, the principle and effectiveness of the PDS are recalled. Second, the impact of different PDS parameters on its operation is analyzed. Third, a multi-objective optimization is proposed to explore a compromise design of PDS. Finally, the transient finite element method simulation is performed to validate the optimized design, which can ensure an excellent noise reduction effect and weaker negative impacts. Findings: A suitable capacitance value in PDS is a key to realizing the damping effect. A larger copper wire can improve the noise reduction performance of PDS and reduce its Joule losses. A compromise solution obtained from a multi-objective optimization remains the excellent noise reduction and reduces Joule losses. Originality/value: This paper explores the impact of PDS parameters on its operation and provides an orientation of PDS optimization, which is favorable to extend its application in different electrical machines. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to optimizing the design of 3D magnetic circuits. This approach is based on topology optimization, where derivative calculations are performed using the continuous adjoint method. Thus, the continuous adjoint method for magnetostatics has to be developed in 3D and has to be combined with penalization, filtering and homotopy approaches to provide an efficient optimization code. Design/methodology/approach: To provide this new topology optimization code, this study starts from 2D magnetostatic results to perform the sensitivity analysis, and this approach is extended to 3D. From this sensitivity analysis, the continuous adjoint method is derived to compute the gradient of an objective function of a 3D topological optimization design problem. From this result, this design problem is discretized and can then be solved by finite element software. Thus, by adding the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) penalization approach and developing a homotopy-based optimization algorithm, an interesting means for designing 3D magnetic circuits is provided. Findings: In this paper, the 3D continuous adjoint method for magnetostatic problems involving an objective least-squares function is presented. Based on 2D results, new theoretical results for developing sensitivity analysis in 3D taking into account different parameters including the ferromagnetic material, the current density and the magnetization are provided. Then, by discretizing, filtering and penalizing using SIMP approaches, a topology optimization code has been derived to address only the ferromagnetic material parameters. Based on this efficient gradient computation method, a homotopy-based optimization algorithm for solving large-scale 3D design problems is developed. Originality/value: In this paper, an approach based on topology optimization to solve 3D magnetostatic design problems when an objective least-squares function is involved is proposed. This approach is based on the continuous adjoint method derived for 3D magnetostatic design problems. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze electromagnetic performance and develop an analytical approach to find the suitable coil combination and no-load flux linkage of the proposed hybrid excited consequent pole flux switching machine (HECPFSM) while minimizing the drive storage and computational time which is the main problem in finite element analysis (FEA) tools. Design/methodology/approach: First, a new HECPFSM based on conventional consequent pole flux switching permanent machine (FSPM) is proposed, and lumped parameter magnetic network model (LPMNM) is developed for the initial analysis like coil combination and no-load flux linkage. In LPMNM, all the parts of one-third machine are modeled which helps in reduction of drive storage, computational complexity and computational time without affecting the accuracy. Second, self and mutual inductance are calculated in the stator, and dq-axis inductance is calculated using park transformation in the rotor of the proposed machine. Furthermore, on-load performance analysis, like average torque, torque density and efficiency, is done by FEA. Findings: The developed LPMNM is validated by FEA via JMAG v. 19.1. The results obtained show good agreement with an accuracy of 96.89%. Practical implications: The proposed HECPFSM is developed for high-speed brushless AC applications like electric vehicle (EV)/hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Originality/value: The proposed HECPFSM offers better flux regulation capability with enhanced electromagnetic performance as compared to conventional consequent pole FSPM. Purpose: This study aims to accurately calculate the magnetic field distribution, which is a prerequisite for pre-design and optimization of electromagnetic performance. Accurate calculation of magnetic field distribution is a prerequisite for pre-design and optimization. Design/methodology/approach: This paper proposes an analytical model of permanent magnet machines with segmented Halbach array (SHA-PMMs) to predict the magnetic field distribution and electromagnetic performance. The field problem is divided into four subdomains, i.e. permanent magnet, air-gap, stator slot and slot opening. The Poisson's equation or Laplace's equation of magnetic vector potential for each subdomain is solved. The field's solution is obtained by applying the boundary conditions. The electromagnetic performances, such as magnetic flux density, unbalanced magnetic force, cogging torque and electromagnetic torque, are analytically predicted. Then, the influence of design parameters on the torque is explored by using the analytical model. Findings: The finite element analysis and prototype experiments verify the analytical model's accuracy. Adjusting the design parameters, e.g. segments per pole and air-gap length, can effectively increase the electromagnetic torque and simultaneously reduce the torque ripple. Originality/value: The main contribution of this paper is to develop an accurate magnetic field analytical model of the SHA-PMMs. It can precisely describe complex topology, e.g. arbitrary segmented Halbach array and semi-closed slots, etc., and can quickly predict the magnetic field distribution and electromagnetic performance simultaneously. Purpose: This paper aims to present an analytical electromagnetic model for wound rotor synchronous machines with a salient-pole rotor structure based on the two-dimensional subdomain technique. Design/methodology/approach: The machine is divided into five active sub-regions: stator slots, stator slot openings, air gap, rotor slots and rotor slot openings. For each sub-region, the governing partial differential equations are derived and solved analytically. Findings: The magnetic flux density distributions in all active sub-regions are analytically computed and other quantities such as back-emf, inductances, electromagnetic torque and unbalanced magnetic forces are also analytically calculated. The results of the analytical model are compared to those obtained from the finite element analysis to show the accuracy of the proposed model. Originality/value: The two-dimensional analytical model of a wound rotor salient-pole synchronous machine using the sub-domain technique is the main contribution of the research. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to propose a two-dimensional (2-D) hybrid analytical model (HAM) in polar coordinates, combining a 2-D exact subdomain (SD) technique and magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), for the magnetic field calculation in electrical machines at no-load and on-load conditions. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, the proposed technique is applied to dual-rotor permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines. The magnetic field is computed by coupling an exact analytical model (AM), based on the formal resolution of Maxwell's equations applied in subdomains, in regions at unitary relative permeability with a MEC, using a nodal-mesh formulation (i.e. Kirchhoff's current law), in ferromagnetic regions. The AM and MEC are connected in both directions (i.e. r- and theta-edges) of the (non-)periodicity direction (i.e. in the interface between teeth regions and all its adjacent regions as slots and/or air-gap). To provide accurate solutions, the current density distribution in slot regions is modeled by using Maxwell's equations instead to MEC and characterized by an equivalent magnetomotive force (MMF) located in the slots, teeth and yoke. Findings: It is found that whatever the iron core relative permeability, the developed HAM gives accurate results for both no-load and on-load conditions. Finite element analysis demonstrates the excellent results of the developed technique. Purpose: This paper aims to reviewed analytical methodologies, i.e. lumped parameter magnetic equivalent circuit (LPMEC), magnetic co-energy (MCE), Laplace equations (LE), Maxwell stress tensor (MST) method and sub-domain modelling for design of segmented PM(SPM) consequent pole flux switching machine (SPMCPFSM). Electric machines, especially flux switching machines (FSMs), are accurately modeled using numerical-based finite element analysis (FEA) tools; however, despite of expensive hardware setup, repeated iterative process, complex stator design and permanent magnet (PM) non-linear behavior increases computational time and complexity. Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviews various alternate analytical methodologies for electromagnetic performance calculation. In above-mentioned analytical methodologies, no-load phase flux linkage is performed using LPMEC, magnetic co-energy for cogging torque, LE for magnetic flux density (MFD) components, i.e. radial and tangential and MST for instantaneous torque. Sub-domain model solves electromagnetic performance, i.e. MFD and torque behaviour. Findings: The reviewed analytical methodologies are validated with globally accepted FEA using JMAG Commercial FEA Package v. 18.1 which shows good agreement with accuracy. In comparison of analytical methodologies, analysis reveals that sub-domain model not only get rid of multiples techniques for validation purpose but also provide better results by accounting influence of all machine parts which helps to reduce computational complexity, computational time and drive storage with overall accuracy of ∼99%. Furthermore, authors are confident to recommend sub-domain model for initial design stage of SPMCPFSM when higher accuracy and low computational cost are primal requirements. Practical implications: The model is developed for high-speed brushless AC applications. Originality/value: The SPMCPFSM enhances electromagnetic performance owing to segmented PMs configuration which makes it different than conventional designs. Purpose: For a given rotor, the study of the impact of stator MMF from different winding distributions is usually carried out using analytical model under some simplifying hypotheses to limit time computation. To get more accurate results, finite element model is thus more suitable. However, testing different combinations of stator windings with the same rotor can be tedious when considering the stator slots. Indeed, this introduces mesh constraint, reluctance variation of the air gap and possibly taking into account of the connection between stator coils. To avoid this, a current sheet supplied such to represent the stator MMF and spread all around the inner slotless stator surface can be used. In addition, such an approach can be very useful to didactically assess the effect of each winding space harmonic on machine performance separately. The purpose of this paper is to use a current sheet coupled to an external analytical tool in order to easily test different windings or to quantify the effect of a given spatial harmonic of the winding. Design/methodology/approach: In the proposed approach, the current sheet supply is obtained from an analytical tool that allows determining the spatiotemporal stator MMF of any winding considered. Moreover, stator teeth height is not modelled, and only the thickness of the stator yoke is considered along with the same air gap thickness. Results with the proposed approach are compared to the real stator modelling for two different winding configurations. Last, linear and non-linear magnetic material behaviours are investigated to validate the proposed approach in term of magnetic distribution. Findings: For both studied cases, results in term of local and global physical quantities show good agreement between the real stator modelling and the proposed approach. Originality/value: Current sheet is used with finite element model to study the inherent effect of different winding configurations on local and global physical quantities of an AC electrical machine. The proposed approach avoids the constraints in terms of stator slot geometry and electrical circuit definition. This is very useful to quickly test different winding configurations or to isolate a specific winding space harmonic to quantify its effect on the electrical performances. Purpose: This paper deals with the study of the influence of the phase shift between currents and back-electromotive forces (back-EMF) on torque ripple and radial magnetic forces for a low power synchronous machine supplied with 120 degrees square-wave currents. This paper aims to establish a good compromise between efficiency, harmonics of torque and harmonics of radial forces at the origin of the electromagnetic noise. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a finite element approach, torque and magnetic pressure harmonics versus space and frequency are evaluated for different angle values. The evolutions of the different harmonics against the load angle are analyzed and compared to those of experimental measurements. Findings: Depending on the load torque, field-weakening or field-boosting can be used to reduce current harmonics contributing the most to the radial magnetic forces responsible for the noise. Besides, a compromise can be found to avoid deteriorating too much the performances of the machine, thus being suitable with an industrial application. Research limitations/implications: This study concerns low power permanent magnet synchronous machines with concentrated windings and driven with a trapezoidal control, while having sinusoidal back-EMF. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the application of the loss approximation method for non-oriented electrical steel developed by the authors. A new model of a toroidal sample with dimensions ensuring high uniformity of the field was presented. Design/methodology/approach: A critical analysis of the methods used was carried out. Based on these considerations, the authors proposed their own loss approximation method, which allows obtaining high accuracy in a wide range of induction and frequency. The proposed method is based on the assumption that for a certain frequency range losses can be describe by two terms formula. For a fixed value of the peak flux density Bm, the graph of specific loss divided by the frequency should have the form of a straight line. Then, the obtained coefficients for different Bm are the basis for approximation with the power function. Findings: The comparison of measurement and approximation results shows that the method allows to obtain very good accuracy in a wide range of induction and frequency. Research limitations/implications: More detailed studies on the impact of cutting on a larger number of samples with different geometrical dimensions are needed. Practical implications: Application of the new method provides a better approximation of the curve of the loss and thus a more accurate calculation of the core loss in the electrical machines. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present a design method for induction machines including a three-phase damper winding for noise and vibrations reduction. Design/methodology/approach: In the first part, the principle of the damper winding is recalled. The second part presents the iterative design method which is applied on a 4-kW pulse width modulation (PWM)-fed induction machine to study the impact of the additional winding on the geometry. In the third part, the finite-element method is used to validate the designed geometry and highlight the harmonic flux density reduction. Finally, some experimental results are given. Findings: The study shows that the impact of the additional three-phase winding on the geometry and weight of the machine is low. Moreover, the proposed noise reduction method allows one to reduce the total noise level of a PWM-fed induction machine up to 8.5 dBA. Originality/value: The originality of the paper concerns the design and characterization of a three-phase damper winding for a noiseless induction machine. Purpose: This paper aims to propose an effective method to verify poles polarities of switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Different from the ways of detection poles polarities by permanent magnet in SRMs, the difference of self-inductance between different winding connections is used to verify the pole polarity. Design/methodology/approach: First, the winding connections with the forward and reverse series are proposed. The magnetic circuit models are established to analyze the flux linkage of different winding connections. Then, according to the difference of inductance characteristics, including the self-inductance and the mutual inductance affected by the adjacent poles, it is theoretically feasible to verify the polarity of each pole. Finally, the proposed method is verified by the simulation and experiment on a six-phase SRM. Findings: First, compared to the reverse series, the forward series can produce larger self-inductance when one phase is excited at the same current excitation, which can be used to verify the poles polarities of one phase with different winding connection. Second, the mutual inductance can be used to distinguish the winding connections. Third, the difference of the maximum self-inductance of the winding, which is composed of two adjacent windings, can be used to verify the polarities of the adjacent poles. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to perform an optimal design of a single-phase permanent magnet brushless DC motor (SPBLDCM) by using efficiency of the motor as an objective function. In the design procedure of the motor, a cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is used as an optimization tool.Design/methodology/approach For the purpose of this research work, a computer program for optimal design of electrical machines based on the CS optimization has been developed. Based on the design characteristics of SPBLDCM, some of the motor parameters are chosen to be constant and others variable. A comparative analysis of the initial motor model and the CS model based on the value of the objective function, as well as the values of the optimization parameters, is performed and presented.Findings Based on the comparative data analysis of both motor models, it can be concluded that the main objective of the optimization is realized, and it is achieved by an improvement of the efficiency of the motor.Practical implications The optimal design approach of SPBLDCM presented in this research work can be also implemented on other electrical machines and devices using the same or even other objective functions.Originality/value An optimization technique using CS as an optimization tool has been developed and applied in the design procedure of SPBLDCM. Purpose Consideration of leakage fluxes in the preliminary design stage of a machine is important for accurate determination of machine dimensions and prediction of performance characteristics. This paper aims to obtain some equations for calculating the average air gap flux density, the flux density within the magnet and the air gap leakage flux factor.Design/methodology/approach A detailed magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) is presented for a TORUS-type non-slotted axial flux permanent magnet (TORUS-NS AFPM) machine. In this MEC, the leakage flux occurring between two adjacent magnets and the leakage fluxes taking place between the magnet and rotor iron at the interpolar, inner and outer edges of the magnets are considered. According to the proposed MEC and by using flux division law, some equations are extracted. A three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is used to evaluate the proposed analytical equations. The study machine is a 3.7 kW and 1,400 rpm TORUS-NS AFPM machine.Findings The air gap leakage flux factor, the average air gap flux density and the flux density within the magnet are calculated using the proposed equations and FEM. All the results of FEM confirm the excellent accuracy of the proposed analytical method.Originality/value The new equations presented in this paper can be applied for leakage flux evaluating purposes. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose the complementary design rules, give a quantitative comparison and analyze the force production mechanism of two kinds of primary wound field flux-switching linear (PWFFSL) motors.Design/methodology/approach PWFFSL motors have the merits of no use of rare-earth magnet, low cost and a wide operation range in which the armature windings and the field windings are all located at the short primary mover and the secondary is very robust. Hence, the PWFFSL motor is ideal for rail transportation systems which need a long stator and a wide speed range. To overcome the disadvantages of the existing PWFFSL motors, new complementary design rules will be proposed. Also, to offer a better PWFFSL motor for the rail transportation systems, it is necessary to investigate different structures of PWFFSL motors and give a comprehensive comparison. To predict the force performance of two kinds of PWFFSL motors with different secondary types, their flux density analysis and force production mechanism will be presented and compared.Findings The comparison result shows that the PWFFSL motor with toothed secondary can offer larger thrust force, higher force density and higher efficiency, whereas the PWFFSL motor with segmented secondary has the merits of lower force ripple, less use of stator iron, higher power factor and less critical saturation.Research limitations/implications Many PWFFSL motors with different primary/secondary pole pitches based on the proposed design principle have not been considered in this paper.Originality/value This paper has presented the air-gap flux analysis, proposed the complementary design rules for two kinds of PWFFSL motors with different secondary types and compared the electromagnetic performance of the two motors. Purpose Due to existence of skin effect under rotational excitation, especially to high-frequency motors and power transformers run at the frequency of hundreds or even thousands of hertz, core losses will increase significantly, which may cause local overheating damage, and the efficiency and longevity will be decreased. The purpose of this paper is to accurately calculate the rotational anomalous loss in electrical steel sheets.Design/methodology/approach The influence of skin effect to rotational anomalous loss coefficient is described in detail. Based on the rotational core losses calculation approach, the transformed coefficient and parameters of rotational anomalous loss are determined in accordance with experimental data obtained by using 3D magnetic properties testing system. Then, a variable loss coefficient calculation model of rotational anomalous loss is built. Meanwhile, a separation of the total 2D elliptical rotation experimental core losses is worked out.Findings The two methods are analysed and compared qualitatively. It should be noted that the novel calculation model can be more effectively presented anomalous loss features. Moreover, quantitative comparisons between 2D elliptical rotation and alternating core losses have achieved beneficial conclusions.Originality/value Transformed rotational anomalous loss coefficient and parameters of electrical steel sheets considering skin effect are determined. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare two design optimization architectures for the optimal design of a complex device that integrates simultaneously the sizing of system components and the control strategy for increasing the energetic performances. The considered benchmark is a battery electric passenger car. Design/methodology/approach – The optimal design of an electric vehicle powertrain is addressed within this paper, with regards to performances and range. The objectives and constraints require simulating several vehicle operating points, each of them has one degree of freedom for the electric machine control. This control is usually determined separately for each point with a sampling or an optimization loop resulting in an architecture called bi-level. In some conditions, the control variables can be transferred to the design optimization loop by suppressing the inner loop to get a mono-level formulation. The paper describes in which conditions this transformation can be done and compares the results for both architectures. Findings – Results show a calculation time divided by more than 30 for the mono-level architecture compared to the natural bi-level on the study case. Even with the same models and optimization algorithms, the structure of the problem should be studied to improve the results, especially if computational cost is high. Originality/value – The compared architectures bring new guidelines in the field optimal design for electric powertrains. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel hybrid excitation permanent magnet synchronous generator (HEPMSG) utilizing tooth harmonic for excitation, the structural features and operation principle of which are also described. Design/methodology/approach – To obtain the operation performance quickly, this paper derives the mathematical model of the machine system represented by circuit, and analyzes the operation mode of rectifier circuit in the tooth harmonic excitation system, then the standard state equations for each operation mode are obtained. Combining the inductance parameter of this machine with the load resistance and inductance, the armature current waveform, the field current waveform and tooth harmonic winding current waveform are obtained by using the numerical method to solve the standard state equation. Findings – Comparing with the experimental results, the availability of the principle and the validity of the model of the machine system are verified. Practical implications – This HEPMSG is a new brushless self-excited and self-regulated generator, which is suitable for an independent power source. Originality/value – Unlike the existing hybrid excitation permanent magnet machine, this HEPMSG utilized the inherent tooth harmonic EMF of the rotor to adjust the air-gap magnetic field of the permanent magnet machine. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate and compare the influence of end-effect on the torque-speed characteristics of three conventional switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines having different stator/rotor pole combinations, i.e. 12/10, 12/13 and 12/14 as well as three novel topologies with less permanent magnets (PMs), i.e. multi-tooth, E-core and C-core. Design/methodology/approach – SFPM machines combine the advantages of simple and robust rotor and easy management of the temperature due to the location of the PMs and armature windings on the stator. However, due to spoke location of the PMs a large flux leakage in the end region, i.e. end-effect, can be observed which could result in a large reduction in the electromagnetic performance. Therefore, the influence of end-effect on the torque-speed characteristics is investigated. 3D-finite element analyses (FEA) results are compared with their 2D-FEA counterparts in order to account for the end-effect influence. Findings – It has been concluded that due to end flux leakage, lower torque capability in the constant torque region is observed in the six machines. However, improved flux-weakening capability in the conventional machines can be exhibited at high current levels, whereas due to the large inductance lower power capability in the multi-tooth, E-core and C-core machines is obtained. Research limitations/implications – The influence of temperature rise on the performance is not included. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the conventional, i.e. single magnet, and novel hybrid-magnet switched-flux permanent-magnet (HMSFPM) machines. Design/methodology/approach – The HMSFPM machines utilize two magnet types, i.e. low-cost ferrites and NdFeB. Thus, a set of magnet ratios (?), defined as the quotient of the NdFeB volume to the total PM volume, is introduced. This allows any desired performance and cost trade-off to be designed. Series- and parallel-excited magnet configurations are investigated using 2-dimensional finite element analysis. Findings – The torque of the HMSFPM machines is lower than the NdFeB SFPM machine but the flux-weakening performance is improved for similar machine efficiency. If the machine dimensions are unconstrained, the HMSFPM machines can have the same torque for reduced material costs and a moderate increase in machine dimensions. Ferrite SFPM machines have the lowest cost for the same torque but a significant increase in machine dimensions is required. Finally, the series-excited HMSFPM machine is the preferred over the parallel-excited HMSFPM machine because it has superior demagnetization withstand capability. Research limitations/implications – Mechanical and winding eddy current losses are not considered in the efficiency map calculations. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to obtain an integrated method for inter-turn short circuit fault detection for the cage-rotor induction machine (CRIM) considering saturation effect. Design/methodology/approach – The magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) is proposed for machine modeling and nonlinear B-H curve is considered for saturation effect. The machine has some differential equations which are converted to algebraic type by trapezoidal method. On the other hand, some nonlinear equations are present due to saturation effect. A set of nonlinear algebraic equation should be solved by numerical method. Therefore, the Newton-Raphson technique is used for equation solving during of the considered time step. Findings – Generally, the operating point of electrical machines is close to the saturation zone due to designing considerations. Moreover, some current and torque harmonics will be produced due to time and space harmonics combination, which cannot be studied when saturation modeling is neglected. Considering both space and time harmonics, a method is proposed for inter-turn short circuit fault detection based on the stator current signatures and the machine performance is analyzed in healthy and faulty cases. In order to obtain the integrated method, two sample machines (two and also four-pole machines) are modeled and finally the accuracy of the proposed method is verified through the experimental results. Research limitations/implications – The calculations have been done in this work is limited to CRIM considering. However, the presented modeling method can be used for another types of electrical machines by some minor modifications. Purpose – Due to linear structure, linear switched flux permanent magnet machines (LSFPMMs) also may have odd pole primary, such as 9, 15, 21, etc., without unbalanced magnetic force in equivalent rotary machines. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – In order to increase the thrust force density, the influence of some major design parameters, including split ratio, PM thickness, primary slot width and secondary pole width, are investigated by finite element analysis. For reducing the thrust force ripple under on-load condition, the end auxiliary teeth are adopted and their positions are also optimized. Findings – This novel 9/10 primary/secondary poles LSFPMM has high average thrust force and low thrust force ripple by optimization. The results demonstrate that the odd pole primary may be a good candidate for long-stroke linear direct drive application. Purpose -- Reducing eddy current losses in magnets of electrical machines can be obtained by means of several techniques. The magnet segmentation is the most popular one. It imposes the least restrictions on machine performances. This paper investigates the effectiveness of the magnet circumferential segmentation technique to reduce these undesirable losses. The full and partial magnet segmentation are both studied for a frequency range from few Hz to a dozen of kHz. To increase the efficiency of these techniques to reduce losses for any working frequency, an optimization strategy based on coupling of finite elements analysis and genetic algorithm is applied. The purpose of this paper is to define the parameters of the total and partial segmentation that can ensure the best reduction of eddy current losses. Design/methodology/approach -- First, a model to analyze eddy current losses is presented. Second, the effectiveness of full and partial magnet circumferential segmentation to reduce eddy loss is studied for a range of frequencies from few Hz to a dozen of kHz. To achieve these purposes a 2-D finite element model is developed under MATLAB environment. In a third step of the work, an optimization process is applied to adjust the segmentation design parameters for best reduction of eddy current losses in case of surface mounted permanent magnets synchronous machine. Findings -- In case of the skin effect operating, both full and partial magnet segmentations can lead to eddy current losses increases. Such deviations of magnet segmentation techniques can be avoided by an appropriate choice of their design parameters. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to develop an effective, yet simple analytical framework for optimization of permanent-magnet synchronous machines. Also, single/multi-objective optimizations are performed for a case-study machine with surface-mounted permanent magnets. Design/methodology/approach - First, an accurate magnetic equivalent circuit is developed which takes all the material such as iron saturation and PM parameters into account. Then, through a Fourier analysis, it is combined with the d-q model of PM synchronous machines to achieve an optimization framework including the developed torque, back-EMF and a number of design considerations. Finally, a genetic algorithm (GA) is employed in the single/multi-objective design optimizations, which offers several design characteristics upon different desired outcomes. Findings - An analytical design framework for the optimization of permanent-magnet synchronous machines is developed in this paper that can effectively account for all material properties such as iron saturation and PM characteristics, and take into account the design considerations, all of which are shown as superiorities of the proposed approach over the existing method. In addition, the proposed framework is relatively simpler in terms of implementing. The model is verified by employing finite element method. Moreover, sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the influence of the design parameters on the machine performance, which provides valuable information for the designer of such devices. Finally, a GA is utilized to perform single/multi-objective optimization schemes whose objectives are minimizing the torque ripples, back-EMF total harmonic distortion and PM volume. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to propose a new three-phase switched reluctance motor (SRM), and achieve high-torque and low-cost. This new SRM's winding configuration uses the double- layer distributed windings, which is different from the conventional SRM's single tooth coils. Design/methodology/approach -- The operating principle of new SRM is analyzed, and the voltage equation and the generated torque are deduced. Finite element method (FEM) and finite element circuit coupled method are utilized to evaluate the new motor's operating performances. The two dimensional (2D) frequency response analysis model is employed in the FEM model. Based on the 2D frequency response analysis model, the magnetic field distribution, self-inductance, and mutual-inductance for the new SRM are analyzed in detail. A co-simulation model using FE analysis package and Matlab-Simulink is proposed to simulate the new SRM drive. The simulated and experimental results verify the new SRM. Findings -- For the new SRM with double-layer distributed windings, a co-simulation method is proposed to analyze its characteristics. The new SRM presents lower torque ripple coefficient and generates larger torque than the conventional SRM, with three-wire and standard full bridge power converter, rather than six-wire and asymmetric half-bridge converter for conventional SRM. Originality/value -- This paper proposes a new SRM with the double-layer distributed windings driven by a standard full bridge inverter. Purpose – In order to keep the advantages of PM generators and eliminate its disadvantage – difficulty in regulating the magnetic field, hybrid excitation is an effective way. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel way to achieve hybrid excitation by use of tooth harmonic field. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical foundation of the so-called quasi 3D modelling method of axial flux machines, and the means for the simulation of the resulting models. Design/methodology/approach – Starting from the first principles, a 3D magnetostatic problem is geometrically decomposed into a coupled system of 2D problems. Genuine 2D problems are derived by decoupling the system. The construction of the 2D simulation models is discussed, and their applicability is evaluated by comparing a finite element implementation to an existing industry-used model. Findings – The quasi 3D method relies on the assumption of vanishing radial magnetic flux. The validity of this assumption is reflected in a residual gained from the 3D coupled system. Moreover, under a modification of the metric of the 2D models, an axial flux machine can be presented as a family of radial flux machines. Research limitations/implications – The evaluation and interpretation of the residual has not been carried out. Furthermore, the inclusion of eddy currents has not been detailed in the present study. Originality/value – A summary of existing modelling and simulation methods of axial flux machines is provided. As a novel result, proper mathematical context for the quasi 3D method is given and the underlying assumptions are laid out. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of end-effect and cross-coupling on the torque-speed characteristics of switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines. Design/methodology/approach – The torque-speed characteristics are predicted using two different methods. These are direct and indirect finite element methods, at different cross-coupling levels, namely, full cross-coupling on both PM flux linkage and dq-axis inductances, partial cross-coupling on the PM flux linkage only and without cross-coupling. Findings – The influence of the cross-coupling on dq-axis inductances of the studied machine is relatively small. However, it is more significant on the PM flux linkage. Therefore, the partial cross-coupling model, which is much easier and faster, exhibits almost the same accuracy as the full cross-coupling model. Furthermore, the end-effect causes a large reduction in torque-speed characteristics. However, such a reduction is more significant in the flux weakening operation region. Originality/value – This is the first time that the influence of end-effect of SFPM machines on the torque-speed characteristics, especially in flux weakening region, and on the dq-axis inductances has been investigated. Purpose – Transient torque calculations of the parallel flux switching machines, both cogging and electromagnetic, require a long simulation time for transient analyses. This paper seeks to present an optimization method for the accurate but time consuming transient models. Design/methodology/approach – A superposition principle is used to optimize the simulation time of the machine model. Finite element method (FEM) is chosen as the example machine model, since it is widely used among researchers for its accuracy. The machine geometry is simplified by reducing the number of rotor teeth, because these parts are re-meshed with each transient step. Torque results are compared to the full machine model to find the best representation. Findings – Among compared simplified machine geometries, the two teeth model gives the most accurate results. Research limitations/implications – The superposition method requires a modelling method such as FEM. The method offers a geometrical simplification of the machine, not a complete model. Practical implications – Parallel flux switching machines should be considered as promising candidates for hybrid and electrical truck applications due to their high power density. For these kind of applications, a fast torque estimation tool helps greatly in investigating noise related mechanical problems, which have a direct effect in passenger comfort. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance of conventional, novel E- and C-core switched-flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines having different combinations of stator and rotor pole numbers, with particular reference to the conductor and magnet eddy current loss and iron loss. Design/methodology/approach – The electromagnetic performance of the analysed machines is compared using the finite element (FE) analysis. Findings – Both iron and conductor eddy current losses increase with the rotor pole number, while the 11- and 13-rotor pole machine always exhibit lower magnet eddy current loss than those of the 10- and 14-rotor pole machines, respectively. The E- and C-core machines use half the number and volume of magnets and also exhibit higher efficiency than those of the conventional SFPM machine. The article discusses a study on improving the generation capability of an alternator topology called claw pole alternator with direct current (DC) excitation in the stator (CPAES). A reluctant model of the CPAES was used to analyze the effects of geometry and material transformations of the magnetic circuit on CPAES' generation capability. Research shows that the proposed geometry and material changes of the magnetic circuit of the CPAES could improve the generation capability.

The article discusses a study which describes an analytical model based on lumped parameter magnetic circuits of a hybrid excitation synchronous machine having a three dimensional (3D) structure. The machine was studied using 3D finite element analysis. It then compared the difference between the maximum flux variation and excitation current obtained by analytical model, 3D finite element analysis and measurements. The model was also used to show laminations packing factor effects.

Purpose ? The purpose of the paper is to evaluate theoretically and experimentally the static and dynamic characteristics of a single-phase claw-pole motor using soft magnetic composite (SMC) for the stator core. Design/methodology/approach ? On the basis of the static characteristics, which are measured and obtained from a series of 3D FE magnetostatic solutions, the dynamic characteristics are simulated according to a proposed control strategy. The same strategy is tested in dSpace control environment. Apart from the evaluation of the prototype SMC motor, some study has been made in order to improve the existing motor design. Findings ? The static characteristics of the single-phase claw-pole motor have been modelled in 3D FE magnetostatic solver, where the rotor position and stator current have been changed. The characteristics compare well with the measurements, while the discrepancy with the cogging torque waveform needs further analyses and experiments to explain the real magnetization pattern of the plastic bounded ferrite magnet-ring and the influence of magnetic hysteresis. The 3D FE magnetostatic optimization routine shows the maximum quantities for magnetic coupling and static core loss. Furthermore it is used to obtain the improved pole distribution so that the resting position of the unexcited motor co-aligns at the position of the maximum electromagnetical torque. This is achieved by changing the angular width of claw-poles. The specific output of the maximum coupling torque from the single-phase claw-pole motor can be increased from the recent 0.1 to 0.6?Nm/kg at a temperature rise of 60░. The simulations of dynamical characteristics show a good correlation with the experiments where the same control system in Simulink is applied to the prototype via dSpace. It is practically easier to implement a simple control strategy for the direct current controlled voltage source inverter. A more advantageous control system needs to be applied for the sampled current controller. Research limitations/implications ? The influence of the magnetization of a multi-pole magnet ring is not considered while computing the static characteristics in 3D FE magnetostatic solver. Practical implications ? The evaluation of the realistic magnetization pattern in the magnet aggravates the proper theoretical evaluation of static characteristics. Originality/value ? The design of a small size powder core motor is faced with the complexity of evaluating properly the static characteristics, while the magnetization pattern is not exactly known. Purpose – This paper deals with closed-loop control of a switched reluctance generator (SRG). Design/methodology/approach – The control objective when generating is to maintain the dc link voltage at the required value while achieving maximum efficiency. Three possible control schemes are presented and their performance is examined by testing on an experimental 12/8 three-phase SRG. Findings – A very simple control scheme that requires no prior characterisation of the SRG, an approach based on the use of an inverse machine model and finally, a control scheme that is aimed at achieving optimal efficiency are described and experimental results for all three are presented. Research limitations/implications – The inverse machine model control scheme and the optimal efficiency control scheme require operation at a constant voltage reference for accurate operation (although this is the case for many generator applications). Possible future research might include the expansion of these control schemes to operation with a variable voltage reference. Practical implications – The importance of maximising efficiency is emphasised with a clear method of deriving the optimal efficiency firing angles described. Originality/value – This paper provides a good overview of SRG operation through the experimental implementation of three separate closed-loop voltage control schemes, each of which is described in detail.
