Abstract

Multiplicity distributions and two-particle correlation functions are presented for shower particles with pseudorapidity η>1 produced in π-interactions on C, Al, Cu, Pb targets at 40 GeV/c. The results are in the correlation function berween the data on nuclei and on hydrogen. The data are compared with the predictions of the additive quark model and the quasi-eikonal model.

Abstract

The coherent production of π−π−π+states has been studied at 25.7 GeV incident energy with an Al target. The partial-wave analysis of the data confirms the evidence of aIGJPL=1−0−Sresonant state in the mass region near to 1.2 GeV, already found by our collaboration at 40 GeV incident energy.

9. Study of backward-produced protons in π−-nucleus interactions at 40 GeV/c

Abstract

The backward production of protons in the reaction π−A → p↓X is studied at 40 GeV incident energy with the different nuclear targets : C, Cu, Pb. The structure function shows a slope independent of the target atomic weightAand slightly dependent on the proton production angle. The invariant cross-section, normalized to the nucleon, increases withAup to a plateau which varies with the incident energy. Finally the ratiosR= (FA/A)/(FC/AC) andn= ln(FA/FC)/ln(A/AC), whereF = (E/p2)(d2σ/(dpdΩ)), show a flat dependence on the momentum of the proton backward produced. These results are in favour of few-nucleon correlation models.

Abstract

In the diffraction dissociation of π− into μ+μ−π− on a Cu nucleus at 50 GeV/c, the cross section " for the 1+S(ρ0π) wave was measured. The branching ratio of ρ0→μ+μ− could be calculated from the ratio of this and the corresponding cross sections in the diffraction dissociation of π− into π+π−π−. The obtained value " is in good agreement with the branching ratio ", as expected ifeμ universality holds.
