- Abstract
Let Gbe a graph on nvertices. The k-token graph (or symmetric k-th power) of G, denoted by Fk(G), has as vertices the nkk-subsets of vertices from G, and two vertices are adjacent when their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in G. In particular, Fk(Kn)is the Johnson graph J(n, k), which is a distance-regular graph used in coding theory. In this paper, we present some results concerning the (adjacency and Laplacian) spectrum of Fk(G)in terms of the spectrum of G. For instance, when Gis walk-regular, an exact value for the spectral radius ρ(or maximum eigenvalue) of Fk(G)is obtained. When Gis distance-regular, other eigenvalues of its 2-token graph are derived using the theory of equitable partitions. A generalization of Aldous’ spectral gap conjecture (which is now a theorem) is proposed.

- Abstract
Aims The association between caffeinated coffee consumption and atrial fibrillation remains unclear. Recent studies suggest an inverse association only between a moderate caffeinated coffee consumption and atrial fibrillation, but others have reported no association. The aim of our study was to prospectively assess the association between caffeinated coffee consumption and atrial fibrillation in two Spanish cohorts, one of adults from a general population and another of elderly participants at high cardiovascular risk. Methods and results We included 18,983 and 6479 participants from the ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ (SUN) and ‘Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea’ (PREDIMED) cohorts, respectively. Participants were classified according to their caffeinated coffee consumption in three groups: ≤3 cups/month, 1–7 cups/week, and >1 cup/day. We identified 97 atrial fibrillation cases after a median follow-up of 10.3 years (interquartile range 6.5–13.5), in the SUN cohort and 250 cases after 4.4 years median follow-up (interquartile range 2.8–5.8) in the PREDIMED study. No significant associations were observed in the SUN cohort although a J-shaped association was suggested. A significant inverse association between the intermediate category of caffeinated coffee consumption (1–7 cups/week) and atrial fibrillation was observed in PREDIMED participants with a multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio = 0.53 (95% confidence interval 0.36–0.79) when compared with participants who did not consume caffeinated coffee or did it only occasionally. No association was found for higher levels of caffeinated coffee consumption (>1 cup per day), hazard ratio = 0.79 (95% confidence interval 0.49–1.28). In the meta-analysis of both PREDIMED and SUN studies, the hazard ratio for intermediate consumption of caffeinated coffee was 0.60 (95% confidence interval 0.44–0.82) without evidence of heterogeneity. Similar findings were found for the association between caffeine intake and atrial fibrillation risk. Conclusion Intermediate levels of caffeinated coffee consumption (1–7 cups/week) were associated with a reduction in atrial fibrillation risk in two prospective Mediterranean cohorts.

10. The geometry of t‐spreads in k‐walk‐regular graphs

- Abstract
A graph is walk‐regular if the number of closed walks of length ℓ rooted at a given vertex is a constant through all the vertices for all ℓ. For a walk‐regular graph Gwith d+1 different eigenvalues and spectrally maximum diameter D=d, we study the geometry of its d‐spreads, that is, the sets of vertices which are mutually at distance d. When these vertices are projected onto an eigenspace of its adjacency matrix, we show that they form a simplex (or tetrahedron in a three‐dimensional case) and we compute its parameters. Moreover, the results are generalized to the case of k‐walk‐regular graphs, a family which includes both walk‐regular and distance‐regular graphs, and their t‐spreads or vertices at distance tfrom each other. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. - Abstract
The present study was carried out to assess if there is an anticipation of age at onset in younger generations of familial multiple sclerosis (FMS) vs. sporadic MS (SMS) in Argentina. Methods: multicenter study that included patients from 14 MS Centers of Argentina. Patients were considered as FMS if they had in their family at least one relative of first or second degree diagnosed with MS; otherwise, patients were considered to have SMS. We compared the age at onset between familial and sporadic cases as well as the age at onset between relatives from different generations in FMS vs. SMS. Results: 1333 patients were included, 97 of them were FMS (7.3%). A lower age at onset in the younger generations of FMS cases was found compared with older generations of FMS as well as. SMS cases (24.1±3.7 years vs. 30.3±5.7 years, and 32.4±9.4 respectively; p<0.001). No differences were observed between older generations of FMS vs. SMS cases (p=0.12). Conclusion: we observed an anticipation of age at onset of MS in younger generations of patients with FMS vs. older generations of FMS and SMS.

- Abstract
An interdisciplinary panel of specialists met in Mallorca in the first European Symposium on Morbid Obesity entitled; “Morbid Obesity, an Interdisciplinary Approach”. During the two and half days of the meeting, the participants discussed several aspects related to pathogenesis, evaluation, and treatment of morbid obesity. The expert panel included basic research scientists, dietitians and nutritionists, exercise physiologists, endocrinologists, psychiatrists, cardiologists, pneumonologists, anesthesiologists, and bariatric surgeons with expertise in the different weight loss surgeries. The symposium was sponsored by the Balearic Islands Health Department; however, this statement is an independent report of the panel and is not a policy statement of any of the sponsors or endorsers of the Symposium. The prevalence of morbid obesity, the most severe state of the disease, has become epidemic. The current recommendations for the therapy of the morbidly obese comes as a result of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Conference held in 1991 and subsequently reviewed in 2004 by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. This document reviews the work-up evaluation of the morbidly obese patient, the current status of the indications for bariatric surgery and which type of procedure should be recommended; it also brings up for discussion some important real-life clinical practice issues, which should be taken into consideration when evaluating and treating morbidly obese patients. Finally, it also goes through current scientific evidence supporting the potential effectiveness of medical therapy as treatment of patients with morbid obesity. Key-words: Morbid obesity, bariatric surgery, gastric bypass surgery, biliopancretic diversion, ghrelin, medical therapy.

13. On Moore bipartite digraphs

- Abstract
In the context of the degree/diameter problem for directed graphs, it is known that the number of vertices of a strongly connected bipartite digraph satisfies a Moore‐like bound in terms of its diameter kand the maximum out‐degrees (d1, d2) of its partite sets of vertices. It has been proved that, when d1d2> 1, the digraphs attaining such a bound, called Moore bipartite digraphs, only exist when 2 ≤ k ≤ 4. This paper deals with the problem of their enumeration. In this context, using the theory of circulant matrices and the so‐called De Bruijn near‐factorizations of cyclic groups, we present some new constructions of Moore bipartite digraphs of diameter three and composite out‐degrees. By applying the iterated line digraph technique, such constructions also provide new families of dense bipartite digraphs with arbitrary diameter. Moreover, we show that the line digraph structure is inherent in any Moore bipartite digraph Gof diameter k= 4, which means that G= LG′, where G′ is a Moore bipartite digraph of diameter k= 3. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. - Abstract
A general spectral bound for the sizes of some vertex subsets, which are mutually at a given minimum distance in a graph, is derived. This unifies and improves some previous results. Some applications to the study of certain metric parameters of the graph are then discussed.

15. Pseudo-Strong Regularity Around a Set
- Author

- Abstract
A generalization of strong regularity around a vertex subset C of a graph Γ, which makes sense even if Γis non-regular, is studied. Such a structure appears, together with a kind of distance-regularity around C , when an spectral bound concerning the so-called predistance polynomial of C is attained. As a main consequence of these results, it is shown that a regular (connected) graph Γwith d + 1 distinct eigenvalues is distance-regular, and its distance- d graph Γ d is strongly regular with parameters a = c , if and only if the number of vertices at distance d from each vertex satisfies an expression which depends only on the order of Γand the different eigenvalues of Γ.

16. Some Spectral Characterizations of Strongly Distance-Regular Graphs

- Abstract
A graph Γ with diameter
d is strongly distance-regular if Γ is distance-regular and its distance-d graph Γ is strongly regular. Some known examples of such graphs are the connected strongly regular graphs, with distance-d d graph Γ =d Γ (the complement of Γ), and the antipodal distance-regular graphs. Here we study some spectral conditions for a (regular or distance-regular) graph to be strongly distance-regular. In particular, for the cased = 3 the following characterization is proved. A regular (connected) graph Γ, with distinct eigenvalues λ0 > λ1 > λ2 > λ3 , is strongly distance-regular if and only if λ2 = −1, and Γ3 isk -regular with degreek satisfying an expression which depends only on the order and the different eigenvalues of Γ.- Published

- Abstract
The twisted odd graphs are obtained from the well-known odd graphs through an involutive automorphism. As expected, the twisted odd graphs share some of the interesting properties of the odd graphs but, in general, they seem to have a more involved structure. Here we study some of their basic properties, such as their automorphism group, diameter, and spectrum. They turn out to be examples of the so-called boundary graphs, which are graphs satisfying an extremal property that arises from a bound for the diameter of a graph in terms of its distinct eigenvalues.

- Abstract
In epididymal mouse spermatozoa, the effects of dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate 1 mmol/L (dbcAMP), pentoxifylline 5 mmol/L (PX), and/or mastoparan 50 mumol/L (MT) were evaluated for the following parameters: percentage of motile cells and response to hypoosmotic shock (HOS). The gametes were incubated during 80 min (A) or 200 min (B) in Tyrode's medium, and the drugs were added during the last 20 min. In A, dbcAMP + PX (61.5 +/- 5.4%; n = 10) enhanced and MT decreased significantly the population of motile cells (13.4 +/- 5.4%; n = 6) (control: 47.6 +/- 3.9%; n = 11). In B, PX significantly increased this parameter and MT plus PX also exerted a significant detrimental effect. Responses to HOS dropped significantly in the presence of PX + MT in A or in B; in this latter condition a similar decrease was evoked by MT alone. A positive correlation between percentages of swollen and motile spermatozoa was detected in A or in B in samples incubated with PX (r = .58, n = 11 and r = .76, n = 10; p < .05, respectively). These results that support that, in mouse sperm tail, PX would preserve functional membrane integrity, a relevant condition for adequate motility.

- Abstract
Let Γ be a regular graph with n vertices, diameter D, and d + 1 different eigenvalues λ > λ
1 > ··· > λd . In a previous paper, the authors showed that if P(λ) > n − 1, then D ≤ d − 1, where P is the polynomial of degree d − 1 which takes alternating values ± 1 at λ1 , , λd . The graphs satisfying P(λ) = n − 1, called boundary graphs, have shown to deserve some attention because of their rich structure. This paper is devoted to the study of this case and, as a main result, it is shown that those extremal (D = d) boundary graphs where each vertex have maximum eccentricity are, in fact, 2-antipodal distance-regular graphs. The study is carried out by using a new sequence of orthogonal polynomials, whose special properties are shown to be induced by their intrinsic symmetry. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. - Abstract
Background: Radial access for PCI is increasing but its use in emergency still remains confidential. We report our single center experience where all interventional cardiologists use the radial access as default strategy for primary PCI. Methods and Results: STEMI patients (n = 671) were evaluated for bleeding complications using a web-based registry (e-PARIS). In-hospital bleeding was adjudicated using various definitions (TIMI, GUSTO, STEEPLE). MACE was the composite of death, MI and stroke. In this non-selected, high risk population, 6.1% had cardiogenic shock on admission, 3.9% out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and 51.2% multivessel disease. Radial access (88%) was the default strategy as was abciximab (78%). Clopidogrel loading dose ranged from 300 to 900 mg. Pre-hospital fibrinolysis was used in 7.1%. Hemodynamic support devices (IABP, ECMO, Tandem Heart) were needed in 7.0%. In-hospital bleeding rates varied widely according to the definitions used: 2.5%, 1.5%, 5.7%, 9.2% and 10.9% with TIMI Major, GUSTO Severe, TIMI Major/minor, GUSTO Severe/moderate or STEEPLE Major, respectively. In-hospital death rate was 5.5%. One-year mortality (8.2%) was seriously impacted by in-hospital bleeding (31.6% vs 6.8%, p < 0.001). The most frequent bleeding site was gastro-intestinal (figure). GUSTO Severe/moderate bleeding was independently correlated with MACE (OR 2.60; 95%CI 1.21–5.59; p = 0.01) and radial access was a strong predictor of survival (OR 0.33; 95%CI 0.17–0.56; p = 0.002). Conclusions: The gastro-intestinal tract is the most frequent site of bleeding when the radial artery is the predominant vascular access site for primary PCI. GUSTO Severe/moderate bleeding is an independent predictor of MACE while radial access predicts survival.
