The Ten Steps to Responsible Inland Fisheries are global recommendations to address the subordinate position of inland fisheries in sustainability dialogues. Regional and local perspectives are essential for implementing global initiatives. Hence, we surveyed state fisheries agency administrators and American Fisheries Society Governing Board members about the importance, funding, and achievability of the Steps. Respondents rated Science, Communication, and Assessment as highly important, well funded, and achievable steps, unlike Aquaculture and a global Action Plan. Nutrition was rated the most inadequately supported yet achievable step, highlighting an opportunity to promote nutritional contributions of inland fisheries. Opinions were similar between administrators and Governing Board members across U.S. regions, suggesting a foundation for incorporating underemphasized steps into management programs by building multi‐organizational partnerships and applying lessons from better integrated steps (e.g., Science, Assessment). Overall, the Steps can advance freshwater science and management in the United States while increasing the visibility of inland fisheries that are rarely prioritized globally.

Every fish population has a compensatory reserve, which reflects the degree of population resilience to perturbations in the environment. This compensation is directly related to the degree of flexibility in vital rates (i.e., survival, growth, and fecundity), which are affected by changing environmental conditions, population density, and genetics. The impacts of changes in growth, maturation, and fecundity of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) in Michigan waters of Lake Michigan, from 1986–2016, were explored using Leslie matrices to assess the potential impacts of stressors (e.g., decreased food availability, fishing pressure, interactions with invasive species) on the population’s scope of compensatory reserve. Analyses of the matrices indicated that the projected population growth rates were up to 9% higher during 1986–2007 (relatively low abundance) compared to the baseline time period (2008–2016; relatively high abundance but declining). Therefore, the lake whitefish populations in northern Lake Michigan exhibited some compensatory reserve during the time period studied (1986–1993). The decrease in compensatory reserve of the population over the past 30 years may be due to density-dependent factors and significant alterations in environmental factors, such as a reduction in the availability of their primary food source (Diporeia).

Free radical-catalyzed cis−trans isomerization of unsaturated lipids and its outcome in biomimetic conditions are reviewed. They provided indications for an endogenous origin of trans unsaturated fatty acids in humans by the attack of thiyl radicals. A multidisciplinary approach highlights the relevance of this topic. The role of cis lipid geometry and its maintenance in the biological environment is an emerging question, with future developments in the fields of lipidomics, biology, and medicine.

The ability to determine the age of fish precisely is essential to understanding the structure and dynamics of fish populations. The goal of this study was to compare three hard structures (scales, otoliths, and dorsal fin spines) for estimating the ages of yellow perch Perca flavescens in an unexploited population in a sanctuary of Pymatuning Reservoir, Pennsylvania. Scales, dorsal fin spines, and sagittal otoliths were removed from 107 yellow perch, prepared, and examined by two independent readers. Ages assigned by the two independent readers agreed 96% of the time when using otoliths, 83% when using scales, and 80% when using spines. Pairwise comparisons (paired t-tests, a = 0.05) indicated no significant differences among the ages assigned using the three methods. Otoliths were the best structure to use for estimating yellow perch age based on high reader agreement and low coefficient of variation (CV). However, we found that scales and dorsal fin spines can be used to adequately describe the age structure of yellow perch populations (CV < 10% for each structure), although dorsal fin spines were slightly more precise than scales for fish assigned to age 4 or older by using otoliths. Thus, use of both dorsal fin spines and scales for yellow perch age and growth studies may improve the precision of population age structure estimates.

Polysilanes of the type H(RSiH)nH, where R=n-hexyl or phenyl, have been used as radical-based reducing agents for organic halides. They rival the effectiveness of the other group 14 hydrides in reduction processes. The repetitive hydrogen transfer from the same molecule of H(RSiH)nH allows these compounds to be used in small quantities. Lower (5 × 104M−1s−1) and higher (6 × 105M−1s−1) limit values for the rate constant of the reaction of primary alkyl radicals with each SiH moiety of H(PhSiH)nH have been obtained by using unimolecular radical reactions as timing devices. The photochemical behavior of these polysilanes in the pi esence or absence of di-tert-butyl peroxide have been studied by EPR spectroscopy, and the −SiHR−SiR−SiHR radical (R=n-hexyl) has been identified as a transient species. Silyl radicals, obtained from H(RSiH)nH and thermally generated tert-butoxyl radicals, add to a variety of substrates containing double bonds to give the corresponding adducts for which EPR spectra have been recorded.

Use of organosilanes that promote the Barton-McCombie deoxygenation is an emerging methodology for organic transformations. A comparison between a variety of substituted silanes is presented. (Me3Si)3SiH rivals Bu3SnH in efficiency and it is a superior reagent from ecological and practical perspectives.
