The Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone (SaSiZ) is a magmatic terranewithin the ZagrosOrogen, western Iran, marking the Tethyan suture zone between the Afro-Arabian Plate and the Central Iran Micro-Continent. Mafic-intermediate dyke swarms withMiddle Jurassic (Group 1: hornblende gabbro and diorite) and Late Eocene (Group 2: hornblende-pyroxene gabbro) ages are recognized in theMalayer-Boroujerd Plutonic Complex of the northern SaSiZ.Group 1 dykes have elemental and isotopic signatures consistent with melting of a mantle source modified during Neo-Tethyan subduction. Some Group 1 magmas evolved to intermediate compositions through assimilation and fractional crystallization. Group 2 dykes have within-plate trace element geochemical signatures, modelled as deriving from low-degree melting of asthenospheric mantle without a subduction influence. Published models postulate either a Cretaceous-Eocene Neo-Tethyan flat-slab scenario or a Latest Cretaceous-Paleogene Neo-Tethyan break-off event beneath the SaSiZ. Such models do not reconcile with the Late Eocene presence of within-plate magmatism in westernmost Iran, very close to the Zagros Suture. We argue that a period of flat-slab subduction concluded with sub-parallel subduction of aNeo-Tethyan ridge to the trench. The resulting slab break-off event in the Late Eocene is responsible for generation of the distinctMesopotamia and Zagros slabs in mantle tomographymodels. The Central Costa Rica Deformed Belt (CCRDB) is an ~100-km broad zone of deformation that marks the boundary between the Caribbean Plate and the Panama Microplate. From December 2011 to February 2012, an earthquake swarm took place in a portion of the CCRDB, near the town of Tobosi, 7 km southwest of the city of Cartago. In this study, data recorded by the National Seismological Network of Costa Rica (RSN: UCR-ICE) is used to relocate the earthquakes and calculate their focal mechanisms. Additionally, the tectonic geomorphology of the region is analyzed. The results show a transtension structure near the town of Tobosi, which comprises at least three faults, named: the Tobosi, Tablon, and Alumbre faults. It was found that the Tobosi fault is an active left-lateral strike-slip fault with a normal component and was the source of the Tobosi earthquake swarm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fracture swarms associated with subtle structures greatly enhance production from tight-gas sandstones of the Mesaverde Group and Dakota Formation in the San Juan Basin. The structures include grabens, horsts, and normal faults, and they can be identified using curvature analyses of horizons mapped in three-dimensional seismic data. Their orientations and styles are consistent with the orientation of fractures that have been identified by other authors using outcrop, core, borehole imagery, and production analyses. Integration of production data (rate-versus-time plots) demonstrates the existence of a drainage interference for wells located on some of the structures. This observation further testifies to a positive correlation between the presence of subtle structures, high fracture intensity, and high fracture permeability. The methods and results described herein can be directly applied to other areas. However, because natural fractures can both enhance and retard hydrocarbon production depending on their character, calibration of seismic, engineering, and other data types will be needed to determine whether subtle structures should be considered as drilling targets, or whether they are to be avoided. Syn- and post-lithification cemented fractures are abundant in concretions formed during shallow burial of Hauterivian turbidites in the Outer Moray Firth. Early fractures are irregular, bifurcating, and contain entrained sand grains. They are confined to the concretion bodies, but commonly splay into narrower fracture swarms at the margins. Multiple, cross-cutting fills of calcite microspar have similar isotopic composition to adjacent concretionary cements, suggesting that rupture and cementation cycles occurred as host concretions lithified. Expulsion of cementing pore fluids from the fractures produced cement protrusions at concretion margins. A hydraulic fracture mechanism resulting from localized permeability heterogeneity and episodic seismic activity is proposed. Rapid seismic loading created high pore fluid pressures for fracture dilation in lithifying concretions and, through cavitation and CO2 degassing, a trigger for rapid homogeneous nucleation of calcite. Many of the early structures were subsequently reactivated as brittle tensile fractures, and host a variety of mesogenetic cements. Reactivation probably occurred in response to stress amplification during rapid Palaeocene burial. By this time lithification of the concretions had dramatically changed their rheology and failure style. Minor permeability remained in the concretion cements adjacent to reactivated fractures, permitting invasion of intercrystalline voids by late diagenetic fluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
