AbstractInjection of lithium deuteride or lithium tritide pellets into fusion devices could simultaneously provide partial deep-penetration fueling of the core plasma and replenishing of the lithium wall/divertor coating. The main problems are possible impurity accumulation and undesirable effects of lithium films on windows, mirrors, and insulators. The potential benefits include better pellet manufacture, acceleration, transmission, penetration, and good lithium wall/divertor coating.

AbstractThe earth generates its own magnetic field via a dynamo effect in a conducting fluid. The sun and some other stars also generate self-magnetic fields on large spatial scales and long timescales. Laser-produced plasmas generate intense self-magnetic fields on very short spatial and time scales. Could similar phenomena occur on intermediate spatial scales and timescales, such as in a laboratory plasma? Two questions are posed for consideration: (a) At high electromagnetic wave power input into a low-pressure gas could a significant self-magnetic field be generated? (b) If a self-magnetic field were generated, would it evolve toward a minimum-energy state? If the answers turned out to be affirmative, then the use of self-magnetic fields could have interesting applications.

This is a report of a study designed to test the prediction that persons high in identification with a sports team would be more biased in their evaluations of that team than persons low in identification. The hypothesis was supported for memory and predictions of team records as well as for direct measures of past, present, and future team evaluations. Discussion focussed on the motivational processes underlying the relationship.

This paper gives the results of a series of tests of the torsional and flexural fatigue strength of specimens of S.A.E. 3140 steel which were tested in air and under a stream of tap water. Comparative results are given showing the effects of abrupt changes in section with the steel in the hot-rolled condition and also after heat-treatment. The effect of the corrosive action of the stream of water on the fatigue strength of the specimens of various shapes is determined in addition to the effects due to abrupt changes in section and to heat-treatment.
