- Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. Apart from its well-known role on calcium metabolism, vitamin D is reported to affect skin functions. The study aims were to: compare the vitamin D levels of children with AD and healthy children; investigate the relationship between the severity of AD and vitamin D levels; and investigate the effect of vitamin D on the natural course of AD.

- Abstract
After the bronchodilator effect of magnesium was shown, the use of magnesium in treatment of asthma exacerbations became common. With the results of recent studies, the use of intravenous magnesium in severe asthma exacerbations took its place. We aimed to examine the effects of adding isotonic magnesium sulphate instead of isotonic saline into nebulised salbutamol on the Modified Pulmonary Index Score (MPIS) and the hospitalisation rate in moderate asthma exacerbations.

- Abstract
Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) polymorphisms by impairing folate metabolism may influence the development of allergic diseases. The results of studies evaluating the relationship between MTHFR polymorphisms and atopic disease are controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the polymorphisms of C677T and A1298C for MTHFR gene and allergic rhinitis (AR) in children.

- Abstract
Lignite, taken from basin in Afsin-Elbistan region, and ash samples were analyzed according to the qualitative, quantitative and radioactivity properties. An elemental analysis was made by using the Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technique. 59.5 keV photons emitted from a 241Am source and 5.9 keV photons emitted from a 55Fe radioactive source were used for excitation. The characteristic K X-rays of the elements were counted with a Si(Li) detector. For the same samples gross alpha, gross beta and radionuclide activities were also measured.

- Abstract
Seasonally gross alpha–beta activities were measured in surface water and sediments in Sir Dam Pond (Kahramanmaras, Turkey). Six sampling sites were pre-defined in different locations of the Sir Dam Pond. Preliminary studies of gross-a and gross-ß activities in the surface water and deep sediments were determined. The results obtained from the determination of the activity indicate that gross-a and gross-ß activities were ranging from 0,007 ± 0,005 to 0,077 ± 0,006 Bq/l and from 0,028 ± 0,006 to 0,189 ± 0,009 Bq/l for the surface water and from 0,001 ± 0.001 to 0,229 ± 0,032 Bq/g and from 0,144 ± 0,026 to 0,419 ± 0,033 Bq/g for deep sediment, respectively.

9. Gasification of Leather Residues—Part I. Experimental Study via a Pilot Scale Air Blown Downdraft Gasifier
- Author
-
Dogru, M.
- Abstract
This article presents an experimental study on the gasification of leather residues from a tannery by using a throated 10 kWe downdraft gasifier. The gasification process is conducted over a range of feed rates in the gasifier for the operating temperatures of 1,000°C and 1,100°C, slightly below atmospheric pressure. In this study, the experimental setup and procedure are also explained in detail. Moreover, the fuel characteristics, components in the produced gas, and side products from the gasification system were measured during the experiments and discussed. It was concluded that the briquetted leather residues were successfully gasified in a downdraft gasifier. However, the large briquette sizes of the leather residues occasionally formed bridging in the throat zone of the gasifier. Therefore the downdraft gasifier should be operated using smaller size briquettes to prevent the bridging in the throat zone in order to productively convert the leather residues into combustible gases.

Dogru, M. and Canbazoglu, C.
- Abstract
Abstract: Gross-alpha and gross-beta activities of fourteen taps and wells, four lakes and three drinking water supplies in Elazi (Turkey) were determined. The results obtained indicate that although the natural radioactivity of six tap, two drinking, four lake and three well water samples does not exceed the requirements of the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, however, most of them do exceed those of the Institution of Turkish Standards (ITS). Concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.17 Bq
. l-1 and from 0.01 to 0.29 Bq. l-1 for gross-alpha and gross-beta radioactivity, respectively, were observed in all samples. For most of the samples, there were no regular correspondence between gross-alpha and gross-beta activity concentrations.- Published

- Abstract
The results of an investigation based on ALEPH data,e
+ e− → hadrons at GeV, into fluctuations in rapidity space are presented. It is found that the behaviour of the factorial moments is well represented by the Lund parton shower model. An estimate is made of the scale of fluctuations needed to describe the data. Differential moments are introduced and are used to demonstrate that within the average represented by the traditional factorial moments the pattern of fluctuations is itself a strong function of rapidity. This pattern is shown to be primarily associated with the emission of hard gluons. The implied structure between the hadron clusters and partons is explored by the use of transverse mass moments. It is concluded that the principal features of the one-dimensional factorial moments, differential moments and transverse mass moments have their origin in theO(αs ) matrix element, kinematic boundaries and the method of selection of the event axis.- Published

- Abstract
Using the data accumulated at LEP in 1989 and 1990 with the ALEPH detector, the inclusive and exclusive branching ratios of the t lepton have been measured assuming lepton universality inZ
0 decays. The inclusive branching fractions for the t decay into one, three, and five charged particles have been determined to be (85.45±0.97)%, (14.35±0.48)%, and (0.10±0.05)%, respectively, in agreement with the world averages. New undetected decay modes are determined to have a branching fraction of less than 2.1% at 95% CL. The measured branching ratios for quasi-exclusive channels are slightly larger than, but consistent with the world averages, except for the modes t?3 hadrons+vt andt?hadron+2p0 vt , which are significantly larger. These latter branching ratios have been found to be (9.5±0.7)% and (10.2±1.1)%, respectively. The sum of all the measured quasi-exclusive branching ratios is (100.4±1.8)%. A fully exclusive analysis of modes with neutral pions shows no evidence for new photonic decay modes with a branching fraction limit of 3.4% at 95% CL.- Published

- Abstract
This paper describes a study of Bose-Einstein correlations made using the ALEPH detector at LEP. The correlations are found to enhance the two particle differential cross section for pairs of identical pions by a factor which can be roughly parametrized byR(Q)=1+? exp(-Q
2 s2 ), whereQ is the difference in the 3-momenta of the two pions in their centre of mass frame, ?=0.51±0.04±0.11 and s=3.3±0.2±0.8 GeV-1 , which corresponds to a source size of 0.65±0.04±0.16 fm. The large systematic errors on these results reflect their strong dependence on the choice of the reference sample used in the analysis. This problem is believed to occur primarily because of uncertainties in the rates of resonance production and a lack of knowledge about the pion-pion strong interaction. No significant correlations are seen amongst like-charged pion-kaon pairs.- Published

- Abstract
Aim To investigate the postoperative eye alignment and binocular visual function after early surgery for infantile esotropia. Methods Both the postoperative eye position and stereopsis were reviewed using the Titmus stereo test in nine patients who received uniocular medial rectus recession and lateral rectus resection under general anaesthesia before 8 months of age and were followed up for a minimum of 4 years. Results Orthophoria was attained in three cases, whereas esotropia was found in four patients. Dissociated vertical deviation was noted in two other cases at the final examination. Static stereoacuity was achieved in five cases. These results also showed that most infants in whom stereopsis was attained had satisfactory eye alignment during the follow up period and at the final examination. Infants who did not achieve stereopsis still had deviation throughout the follow up period. Conclusions It was concluded that early surgery in infantile esotropia is beneficial to achieve binocular visual function, but it is necessary to confirm a stable angle of deviation with accurate preoperative evaluation, and to maintain good postoperative eye alignment throughout the follow up period.
