In the article, the author presents a materialist view on the origin of the science-practice gap as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Said gap is the failure to implement known and available solutions to address a problem like the wearing of masks and implementing social isolation during the pandemic. Also cited are the situations in which the gap occurs in ecology and nature conservation.

The article discusses land cover change (LCC), which is human impact on land ecology, in light of philosopher Karl Marx's economic theories. Marx's views on land rent, or the extraction of profits from natural habitats, and metabolic rift, which refers to the urban pollution and rural resource withdrawal caused by urbanization, are addressed. Other topics include the destruction of tropical forest for agricultural expansion, the impact of agribusiness on the Amazon rainforests, and the extraction of firewood from forests.
