The article offers information on sustaining a Reiki community, especially through the challenges of transitioning to virtual formats during the pandemic. Topics discussed include the advantages and drawbacks of virtual Reiki classes; strategies for building connections in a virtual space; and the ongoing efforts to balance virtual and in-person community events.

How is memory embodied, narrated, interrupted, and reworked? Here, we take a postphenomenological approach to memory work that is attentive to how site-based affects prompt and ossify, but also transmogrify, memory of place. With reference to an intensely traumatized, but also domesticated and entropied, environment—the island of Hashima, off the coast from Nagasaki City in Japan—we demonstrate the relevance and explanatory reach of culturally specific accounts of memory, time, and place; how an attentiveness to cultural context in the making of meaning helps mark out the epistemological violences that accrue around sites such as Hashima as objects of analysis in and of themselves; and the affective capacities of the materialities and forces that compose such sites, which can present a welter of surfaces and interiorities that are sensuously “felt” as memory.

This editorial introduction to the new journal GeoHumanitiesconsists of a general introduction and four contributions reflecting on the origins of geohumanities as an interdisciplinary field and the intended future directions of the journal. Contributions are based on talks given at the launch of the journal at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers at Chicago in 2015 and include commentaries by the two Managing Editors, Tim Cresswell and Deborah Dixon, as well as J. Nicholas Entrikin and Peter K. Bol, who were both involved in events leading up to the launch of the journal. Particular emphasis is given to the interdisciplinary nature of the new endeavor and the possibilities for creative contributions to the journal linking interdisciplinary work around space and place to the creative arts.

In our response, below, we undertake a deeper engagement with one of the authors, Elizabeth Grosz, that a number of the respondents have evoked, implicitly as well as explicitly, in their response to our text and, in particular, Grosz's arguments on art as of the chaotic and of the animal. Whilst our comments on the bowerbird speak to the artistry involved in a sexuated mode of reproduction that increases biological difference, we emphasise an abyssal moment in our initial text wherein we move from a consideration of sexual selection to symbiosis and accretion as productive of diversity, terms that no longer sit quite so comfortably in the lexicon of the ‘animal’. Rather, we implicate aesthetics and an artistry across and down chemical concentration gradients.

Geographers have long pondered post-human worlds. And yet, whilst such analyses have explored the natural and physical sciences as a means of articulating the relationalities and commonalities that span species and kingdoms, an explicit consideration of the aesthetic has been largely absent. To a degree, this is because the aesthetic has been understood as a `humanist remain'. Here, we want to make a stronger claim for the value of the aesthetic as a stepping off point for thinking through post-human geographies. We begin by acknowledging a productive tension within Kantian and post-Kantian accounts of sense-making: that is, a series of questions that speak directly to the post-human have been raised by dwelling upon how the aesthetic can be related to bodily needs and desires, as well as a feeling that emerges from the exercise of judgement. Then, we make the argument that, as a means of developing our aesthetic sensibility, geography can usefully further its engagement with art theory and practice. This leads us to ground our own exploration of the post-human in a discussion of two projects created by artist Perdita Phillips. Moving from a consideration of bowerbirds in the savanna to thrombolites in a saline lake, and from evolutionary biology to a Deleuzo -Guattarian geophilosophy, we ask, where is the artistry?

Considerable attention within geography has been paid to the physiologies, knowledges and practices that give substance and import to the senses – sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch – and the manner in which these work alone, or in concert, to facilitate particular forms of relations between and amongst people, other life forms and objects. This article takes stock of the manner in which touch has entered into these debates and in particular of recent efforts to place touch, touching and being touched within non‐essentialist, human geographic analyses. In doing so it draws attention, first, to studies that have used ‘non’ or ‘more than’ representational theory to emphasise the role of pathic, or precognitive, experiences of place in the production of proximal forms of knowledge and second, to work that explores the inter‐play between the ‘interior’ psychologies of intimacy and indifference, acceptance and alienation (i.e. feelings of being in/losing/being out of touch) and the ‘exterior,’ corporeal work of texture and friction, push and feel. We conclude by calling for more critical attention to the work of touch in constructing scaled geographies and the recognition of legal and jurisdictional geographies in determining where, when and how touching takes place, the designation of touching as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ and the imposition of penalties in response to touch.

The thermodynamic efficiency of the calmodulin-activated form of the Ca2+-pumping ATPase of the bovine cardiac sarcolemma (SL) was evaluated in sealed vesicles under reversible conditions. The free internal Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) established in the SL vesicle lumen by action of the ATPase was determined as a function of the [ATP]/([ADP][Pi]) ratio for the following experimental conditions: 250mM sucrose, 100mM KCI, 0.1mM Mg2+, 25mM HEPES, 25mM Tris, pH 7.40, at 37°C, [Ca2+]o=50nM (1mM Ca/EGTA buffer), 0.75mM Mg-ATP, 0.1mM Pi, variable [ADP]. Under these conditions, with the pump working near itsKm of 64nM, the [Ca2+]i achieved was =18mM, decreasing with increasing [ADP] for [ADP] =0.84mM. A plot of the square of the [Ca2+]i/[Ca2+]o ratio against [ATP]/([ADP][Pi]) gave a straight line with a slope of 1.5×107M. This was in agreement, within the experimental error, with the equilibrium constant for ATP hydrolysis under these conditions (1.09×107M). These results demonstrate (1) tight coupling between Ca2+ transport and ATP hydrolysis with a stoichiometry of 2 Ca2+ moved per ATP split and (2) a low degree of passive leakage. Analysis at low [ADP] (<0.83mM) showed the unexpected result that ADP increases the rate of theforward reaction of the pump. The maximal effect on the initial rate is a 96±5% increase, with an EC50 of approximately 0.4mM (ADP). Similar but lesser stimulation was observed with CDP. The implications of the above results for the energetics of the pump and for its physiological function in the beating heart are discussed.

The ability of the Ca2+-Mg2+ ATPase pump of skeletal SR to produce and maintain a Ca2+ gradient was studied as a function of the ATP/ADP/Pi ratio. The internal free Ca2+ concentration [Ca2+]i was monitored by changes in fluorescence of CTC. Increasing ADP concentrations in the medium reduce the maximal [Ca2+]i concentration achieved. The inclusion or the omission of 4×10-4 M Pi or doubling the absolute ATP and ADP concentrations at a constant ATP/ADP ratio does not affect the level obtained. The level depends primarily on the ATP/ADP ratio. The [Ca2+] concentration shows a 1.5 power dependence on the ATP/ADP ratio. Further, [Ca2+]i achieved at steady state does not depend on whether the pump had been working in the forward or the reverse direction prior to testing. Analysis shows that the levels of Ca2+ achieved are much lower than the levels predicted thermodynamically under the assumption of ideal coupling between Ca2+ transport and ATP hydrolysis with a stoichiometry of 2:1. Under this condition the “osmotic” energy of the [Ca2+]i/[Ca2+]o ratio was shown to be 48% as large as the free energy of hydrolysis of ATP, giving an overall thermodynamic efficiency of 48%. Analysis shows that maximal steady-state uptake is determined by the balance between the rates of uptake by the pump and rates of leak processes (intrinsic or extrinsic to the pump). Comparison with other studies shows that the [Ca2+]i achieved results in trans-inhibition of the pump by tying up the Ca2+ translocator in the inwardly oriented phosphorylated form. The absence of an effect of Pi can be taken as evidence that the dissociation of Ca2+ from the inwardly oriented translocator on the phosphoylated enzyme must precede the dephosphorylation of the enzyme.

Summary The sensitivity of the Ca2+ pumping ATPase of bovine cardiac sarcolemma (SL) to changes in membrane potential was studied in a preparation of sealed SL vesicles. Membrane potential was imposed by preincubating the vesicles in media of defined ion composition (K+, Cl-, choline+ and gluconate-) and diluting into media of differing ion composition. The durations of the ion gradients and relative ion permeabilities were determined in separate experiments by the dependence of the half time for net K+ (or choline+) movement coupled with these anions (Cl- or gluconate-), registered by the fluorescence of 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate (Chiu, V.C.K., Jaumes. D.H. 1980.J. Membrane Biol.56:203–218). Relative permeabilities were: 1.0, K+, =10.0, 1 µm valinomycin-K+; 4.0, Cl-, 0.66, choline+; 0.38, gluconate-. Durations of the gradients ranged between 17 sec (KCl, valinomycin) to 195 sec (K+-gluconate-). In separate experiments. active Ca2+ uptake was monitored using chlorotetracycline (CTC) fluorescence, a technique validated by 45-Ca2+ measureaments (Dixon, D., Brandt, N., Haynes, D.H. 1984.J. Biol. Chem.259:13737–13741). Active Ca2+ uptake was initiated in the presence of monovalent ion gradients. The values of the membrane potentials (Em) imposed by the monovalent ion gradients were calculated using the ion concentrations, their relative permeabilities and the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation. No effect of membrane potential on transport rate was observed (=4%, for 5–7%sd) for imposed potentials as extreme as =+71 and =-67 mV. Formal analysis shows that the above observations are not compatible with models in which the Ca2+ pumping ATPase functions in an electrogenic or charge-uncompensated fashion. Further experimentation showed that the pump rate is slowed when uptake is measured at less-than-adequate concentrations of buffer (5vs. 25mm HEPES/Tris). This, together with further control experiments using nigericin and FCCP, gave evidence that the pump requires a source of counter-transportable H+ in the vesicle lumen. The above experimentation also underlines the need for control of internal pH to obviate erroneous interpretation of ion perturbation experiments. The results are compared with results obtained with the Ca2+ ATPase pump of skeletal sarcoplasmic reticulum.

As geographers confront the manifold challenges of an Anthropocene, so the framing of geography as the critical study of space – a framing that took hold of theory and practice in the 20th century and that searched for antecedents as well as prognostications – is increasingly splayed across the long durée of geography as the interrogation of the nature of human being as well as the Earthly environment and the constitutive relations between these. While the prospect of a new geologic epoch situates these Anthropocene challenges as the conjunction of a human history with the deep time of the planet, it also suggests, for example, the entanglement of the geopolitical and the geophysical, an entanglement that the (colonial and imperialising) discipline of geography has helped to articulate and produce even while proffering an explanation of the same. In pivoting back once more to the knotty matter of geopolitics and geophysics, what concepts and lexicons might be productive? Here, and thinking through the work that terrain has done and can do, I offer the multi-agential, survey defying, taxonomically mutable, drifting geographies of drift that have been so perturbing to a solid geology and its stratigraphic tempo, and hence can, perhaps, provide another resource from which to construe the political materialities of an Anthropocene.

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are emerging in many school districts across the country to develop a structure for educational teams to collaborate to work towards improving student achievement. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are vital members of these PLCs, and bring much to the table that assists teams in reaching their goals. This article, based on interviews with a number of SLPs practicing in the school setting, briefly describes how PLCs are formed, the roles that SLPs play within these communities, and the benefits that both the community and the SLP derive from PLCs..
