A series of transition metal complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) metal ions with various uninegative bidentate Schiff base ligands derived from condensation of piperonylamine and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde/substituted salicylaldehyde derivatives were synthesized and were well characterized by different spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, UV–Vis, NMR, fluorescence, mass, and ESR), molar conductance measurements, elemental analysis and by various physical studies like thermal (TGA, DTG, and DTA) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The characterization data revealed that Schiff bases’ coordinates via azomethine nitrogen and deprotonated phenolic oxygen (NO) with metal centres in 2:1 molar ratio with octahedral geometrical arrangement for Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) complexes and square planar geometry for Cu(II) complexes. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureusand Streptococcus gordonii); two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coliand Pseudomonas aeruginosa); and two fungal strains (Aspergillus nigerand Candida albicans). Comparative biological study indicated that metal complexes were more noxious as compared to free ligands and Zn(II) complexes were found to be most potent antimicrobial agents among all the synthesized complexes. The complexes 23–30showed excellent activity against tested microorganisms. Quantitative structure–activity relationship study of compounds was made for antimicrobial assessment which exposed that metal complexes with high molecular weight were more potent against E coli.

Cancer is a multistep disease incorporating physical, chemical, environmental, metabolic and genetic factors, which play direct or indirect role in the induction and deterioration of cancer. Many of the platinum based drugs were synthesized but due to their systemic toxicity, broad spectrum of action, intrinsic and acquired drug resistivity, it has become necessary to search for the effective anticancer drugs with superior efficiency. Among non-platinum metal compounds with antitumor activity, organotin complexes have proven effective management of toxicity, specific targeted drug uptake by the cancerous cell line and significant potential in the pharmaceutical chemistry. So this article provides a critical review from 2010 onwards of the anticancer activity of the organotin complexes reported by the authors worldwide and explores the landmarks for their future projection as novel anticancer chemotypes with high therapeutic indices.

Organotin complexes of Schiff bases (derived from the condensation of hydrazides with salicylaldehyde derivatives) were prepared and their characterization was done using several spectroscopic techniques like FTIR, NMR (1H, 13C, and 119Sn) and mass spectrometry. The spectroscopic data of the ligands and their corresponding complexes revealed that the Schiff bases chelated to the tin metal in a tridentate manner through –ONO atoms (oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group of the salicylaldehydic derivatives, the nitrogen atom of azomethine group, and the oxygen atom of enolic group present in the carboxylic acid hydrazides). Around tin atom pentacoordinated geometry was exhibited. The synthesized ligands and their complexes have been assessed for their biological potency (antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant using Ciprofloxacin, Fluconazole and Ascorbic acid as reference compounds) and few of the compounds showed optimistic activity. The ligands having electron withdrawing group attached showed greater antimicrobial activity as compared to the other ligands. The complexes showed the better activity than the ligands. The general trend followed by the complexes was diphenyl ​> ​dibutyl ​> ​dimethyl substituted complexes. Compound 11was the most active against microbes. The antioxidant activity increased with electron donating group. The phenyl substituted complexes showed better activity as compared to the dibutyl and dimethyl substituted complexes. Compound 20was the best antioxidant.
