A dyssynchronous biventricular activation, which can be determined by left bundle branch block, chronic right ventricular pacing, frequent premature ventricular complexes, or pre-excitation, can cause a global abnormal contractility, thus leading to systolic dysfunction and left ventricular remodelling in a unique nosological entities: abnormal conduction-induced cardiomyopathies. In this clinical scenario, the mainstay therapy is eliminating or improving LV dyssynchrony, removing the trigger. This usually ensures the improvement and even recovery of cardiac geometry and left ventricular function, especially in the absence of genetic background. A multidisciplinary approach, integrating advanced multimodal imaging, is essential for the systematic aetiological definition and the subsequent evaluation and aetiology-guided therapies of patients and their families. This review aims to describe mechanisms, prevalence, risk factors, and diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the various abnormal conduction-induced cardiomyopathies, starting from reasonable certainties and then analysing the grey areas requiring further studies.

Nanoporous metals are a class of nanostructured materials finding extensive applications in multiple fields thanks to their unique properties attributed to their high surface area and interconnected nanoscale ligaments. They can be prepared following different strategies, but the deposition of an arbitrary pure porous metal is still challenging. Recently, a dry synthesis of nanoporous films based on the plasma treatment of metal thin layers deposited by physical vapour deposition has been demonstrated, as a general route to form pure nanoporous films from a large set of metals. An interesting aspect related to this approach is the possibility to apply the same methodology to deposit the porous films as a multilayer. In this way, it is possible to explore the properties of different porous metals in close contact. As demonstrated in this paper, interesting plasmonic properties emerge in a nanoporous Au–Ag bi-layer. The versatility of the method coupled with the possibility to include many different metals, provides an opportunity to tailor their optical resonances and to exploit the chemical and mechanical properties of components, which is of great interest to applications ranging from sensing, to photochemistry and photocatalysis.

Polaritons can be generated by tuning the optical transitions of a light emitter to the resonances of a photonic cavity. We show that a dye-doped cavity generates resonant tunneling polaritons with Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) effective permittivity. We studied the polariton spectral dispersion in dye-doped metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) cavities as a function of the in-plane (k||) and out-of-plane (k⊥) components of the incident wavevector. The dependence on k||was investigated through ellipsometry, revealing the ENZ modes. The k⊥dependence was measured by varying the cavity thickness under normal incidence using a Surface Force Apparatus (SFA). Both methods revealed a large Rabi splitting well exceeding 100 meV. The SFA-based investigation highlighted the collective nature of strong coupling by producing a splitting proportional to the square root of the involved photons. This study demonstrates the possibility of generating ENZ polaritons and introduces the SFA as a powerful tool for the characterization of strong light–matter interactions.

Introduction: Bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii(CRAB) are associated with high mortality with limited treatment. The aim of this study is to compare effectiveness and safety of colistin-based versus cefiderocol-based therapies for CRAB-BSI. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study enrolling patients with monomicrobial CRAB-BSIs treated with colistin or cefiderocol from 1 January 2020, to 31 December 2022. The 30-day all-cause mortality rate was the primary outcome. A Cox regression analysis was performed to identify factors independently associated with mortality. A propensity score analysis using inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was also performed. Results: Overall 118 patients were enrolled, 75 (63%) and 43 (37%) treated with colistin- and cefiderocol-based regimens. The median (q1–q3) age was 70 (62–79) years; 70 (59%) patients were men. Conclusions: Cefiderocol may be a valuable treatment option for CRAB-BSI, especially in the current context of limited treatment options.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a frequent and detrimental condition. Right heart catheterization (RHC) is the gold standard to identify PH subtype (precapillary from postcapillary PH) and is key for treatment allocation. In this study, the novel echocardiographic biventricular coupling index (BCI), based on the ratio between right ventricular stroke work index and left ventricular E/E′ ratio, was tested for the discrimination of PH subtype using RHC as the comparator.

This paper reports on the nanofabrication of a fiber-reinforced polymer nanocomposite (FRPN) by two-photon direct laser writing (TP-DLW) using silica nanowires (SiO2NWs) as nanofillers, since they feature a refractive index very close to that of the photoresist used as a polymeric matrix. This allows for the best resolution offered by the TP-DLW technique, even with high loads of SiO2NWs, up to 70 wt %. The FRPN presented an increase of approximately 4 times in Young’s modulus (8.23 GPa) and nanohardness (120 MPa) when compared to those of the bare photoresist, indicating how the proposed technique is well-suited for applications with higher structural requirements. Moreover, three different printing configurations can be implemented thanks to the use of silicon chips, on which the SiO2NWs are grown, as fabrication substrates. First, they can be effectively used as an adhesive layer when the laser beam is focused at the interface with the silicon substrate. Second, they can be used as a sacrificial layer, when the laser beam is focused in a plane inside the SiO2NW layer. Third, only the outer shell of the object is printed so that the SiO2NW tangle acts as the internal skeleton for the structure being fabricated in the so-called shell and scaffold printing strategy.

The variation between rest and peak stress end-systolic pressure–volume relation (ΔESPVR) is an index of myocardial contractility, easily obtained during routine stress echocardiography and never tested during dipyridamole stress-cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). We assessed the ΔESPVR index in patients with known/suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent dipyridamole stress-CMR. One-hundred consecutive patients (24 females, 63.76 ± 10.17 years) were considered. ESPVR index was evaluated at rest and stress from raw measurement of systolic arterial pressure and end-systolic volume by biplane Simpson’s method. The ΔESPVR index showed a good inter-operator reproducibility. Mean ΔESPVR index was 0.48 ± 1.45 mmHg/mL/m2. ΔESPVR index was significantly lower in males than in females. ΔESPVR index was not correlated to rest left ventricular end-diastolic volume index or ejection fraction. Forty-six of 85 patients had myocardial fibrosis detected by the late gadolinium enhancement technique and they showed significantly lower ΔESPVR values. An abnormal stress CMR was found in 25 patients and they showed significantly lower ΔESPVR values. During a mean follow-up of 56.34 ± 30.04 months, 24 cardiovascular events occurred. At receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, a ΔESPVR < 0.02 mmHg/mL/m2 predicted the presence of future cardiac events with a sensitivity of 0.79 and a specificity of 0.68. The noninvasive assessment of the ΔESPVR index during a dipyridamole stress-CMR exam is feasible and reproducible. The ΔESPVR index was independent from rest LV dimensions and function and can be used for a comparative assessment of patients with different diseases. ΔESPVR index by CMR can be a useful and simple marker for additional prognostic stratification.

In the wide phenotypic spectrum of cardiomyopathies, sudden cardiac death (SCD) has always been the most visible and devastating disease complication. The introduction of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for SCD prevention by the late 1980s has moved the question from how to whom we should protect from SCD, leaving clinicians with a measure of uncertainty regarding the most reliable option to guide identification of the highest-risk patients. In this review, we will go through all the available evidence in the field of arrhythmic expression and arrhythmic risk stratification in the different phenotypes of cardiomyopathies to provide practical suggestions in daily clinical management.

The pressure overload due to the progressive narrowing of the valve area determines the development of the left ventricular hypertrophy which characterizes aortic stenosis (AS). The onset of myocardial fibrosis marks the inexorable decline of an initially compensatory response towards heart failure. However, myocardial fibrosis does not yet represent a key element in the prognostic and therapeutic framework of AS. In this context, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging plays a major role by highlighting both the focal irreversible fibrotic replacement, using the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) technique, and the earlier diffuse reversible interstitial fibrosis, using the T1 mapping techniques. For this reason, the presence of myocardial fibrosis would be useful to identify a subgroup of patients at greater risk of events among the subjects with severe AS. Actually, more and more evidences seem to identify the presence of LGE as a powerful prognostic factor to be used to optimize the timing of prosthetic valve replacement. Randomized clinical trials, such as the EVoLVeD trial currently underway, will be needed to better define the importance of myocardial fibrosis assessment in the management of patients with AS.

An inverted pyramidal metasurface was designed, fabricated, and studied at the nanoscale level for the development of a label-free pathogen detection on a chip platform that merges nanotechnology and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Based on the integration and synergy of these ingredients, a virus immunoassay was proposed as a relevant proof of concept for very sensitive detection of hepatitis A virus, for the first time to our best knowledge, in a very small volume (2 μL), without complex signal amplification, allowing to detect a minimal virus concentration of 13 pg/mL. The proposed work aims to develop a high-flux and high-accuracy surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanobiosensor for the detection of pathogens to provide an effective method for early and easy water monitoring, which can be fast and convenient.

In recent times, biomolecular sensing to recognize genetic fragments and proteins is spurring unprecedented interest as a diagnostic protocol for cancer and infectious diseases. Significant efforts have been made to design nanomaterials able to control the light–matter interaction at the single nanometer scale, where genes and proteins bind specifically to receptors. Here, we numerically show how the interface between a chiral metasurface and hyperbolic metamaterials can enable both high sensitivity and specificity for low-molecular-weight nucleic acids and proteins. As we have recently reported, hyperbolic dispersion metamaterials allow molecular biorecognition with extreme sensitivity because of coupled and highly confined plasmon polaritons. Specificity is almost exclusively achieved by receptor–ligand interaction at the in-plane sensing surface. Interestingly, an adapted out-of-plane chiral metasurface enables three key functionalities of the hyperbolic metamaterial sensor. Computational effort reveals that helicoidal metasurfaces can act as (i) efficient diffractive elements to excite surface and bulk plasmon polaritons; (ii) out-of-plane sensing branches to reduce the diffusion limit and increase the sensing surface; and (iii) biorecognition assay also via circular dichroism and chiral selectivity.

We investigate the resonant gain response in doped multishell hybrid nanoparticles made of concentric and alternated doped dielectric and metal shells. In particular, we compare the enhanced extinction properties calculated in a quasi-static approximation with accurate light scattering calculations in the T-matrix formalism. We show that, even for small hybrid particles, a difference in the calculated optoplasmonic mode yields a dramatic change in the resonant coupling with the doped molecular system. Thus, although a simple dipole approach gives a fast qualitative view of the multishell gain-assisted response, a complete light scattering framework is crucial for a quantitative investigation of these hybrid nanosystems.

Patients with symptomatic heart failure (HF), reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and high-grade functional mitral regurgitation (MR) may benefit from percutaneous edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (PMVR). However, patient selection still remains a central issue. We sought to investigate the potential role of the global longitudinal strain- (GLS-) based left ventricular contractile reserve (LVCR) at dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) in this setting.

We report a detailed characterization of the photoinduced heating observed in gain-assisted solutions of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). AuNPs, with sizes ranging from 14 to 48 nm and concentration of 2.5 × 10–10M, are exposed to different intensity values of a resonant continuous laser (532 nm), used to excite their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), responsible for the photogeneration process. In this way the optimal conditions to achieve the maximum temperature variation with the least laser dosage are obtained. By addition of an organic dye to the solutions, whose emission band overlaps to the LSPR, we found that the contribution to the photothermal efficiency is enhanced if the solutions are excited at 405 nm. This happens in the case of smaller NPs, due to a strong coupling effect between the two subunits, which causes an increase of the extinction cross section of the whole gain-assisted system. On the other hand, for the larger AuNPs, an opposite behavior is found: a loss compensation mechanism, based on a resonant energy transfer process from gain units to plasmonic nanoparticles, limits the increase of the absorption cross section with a consequent lowering of the photothermal efficiency. The presented quantitative analysis of a dispersion of AuNPs results as fundamental for biomedical applications as well as for integrated plasmonic devices based on loss compensation effects, where the impact of undesirable thermal effects cannot be ignored.

This paper presents the results of a series of investigations that were performed on a reinforced concrete bridge structure exposed to marine environment in subtropical weather. Data were obtained by assessing the structural conditions using visual observations, nondestructive evaluations, and laboratory testing in order to define the cause and the level of concrete deterioration due to corrosion. In addition, a probabilistic methodology was used to compute the time of corrosion initiation focusing on reinforced concrete subjected to a similar chloride environment. The initial service life was predicted with a method that employed the use of statistical models of the governing parameters obtained from field data. Results show that this approach could be utilized for assessment of existing and new constructions and/or as a tool for decision-making process during the structural design phase.

We present a review of polymer-liquid crystal-based devices for optical applications. Starting from a particular fabrication technique, which enables to obtain the POLICRYPS (POlymer LIquid CRYstal Polymer Slices) structure, we illustrate different realizations, along with their working principle and main features and performances. The name POLICRYPS indicates a structure made of parallel slices of pure polymeric material alternated to films of well-aligned nematic liquid crystal (NLC), with a spatial periodicity that can be settled in the range 0.2÷15 μm. Suitably designed samples can be utilized as optical devices with a high efficiency, which can be switched on and off both by applying an electric field of a few V/μm or by irradiating samples with a suitable light beam. In different geometries, POLICRYPS can be specialized to operate as switchable diffraction grating, switchable optical phase modulator, switchable beam splitter, or tunable Bragg filter. The POLICRYPS framework can be also used as a soft matter template for aligning different types of LCs or to create an array of tunable microlasers. Finally, we present a POLICRYPS structure with a polar symmetry of the director alignment, which enables local shaping of light polarization, allowing to convert circularly polarized beams into cylindrical vector beams.

Plasmonic quasi-periodic structures are well-known to exhibit several surprising phenomena with respect to their periodic counterparts, due to their long-range order and higher rotational symmetry. Thanks to their specific geometrical arrangement, plasmonic quasi-crystals offer unique possibilities in tailoring the coupling and propagation of surface plasmons through their lattice, a scenario in which a plethora of fascinating phenomena can take place. In this paper we investigate the extraordinary transmission phenomenon occurring in specifically patterned Thue–Morse nanocavities, demonstrating noticeable enhanced transmission, directly revealed by near-field optical experiments, performed by means of a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM). SNOM further provides an intuitive picture of confined plasmon modes inside the nanocavities and confirms that localization of plasmon modes is based on size and depth of nanocavities, while cross talk between close cavities viapropagating plasmons holds the polarization response of patterned quasi-crystals. Our performed numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. Thus, the control on cavity size and incident polarization can be used to alter the intensity and spatial properties of confined cavity modes in such structures, which can be exploited in order to design a plasmonic device with customized optical properties and desired functionalities, to be used for several applications in quantum plasmonics.

We present a detailed study on the resonant gain (RG) phenomena occurring in two nanostructures, in which the presence of dielectric singularities is used to reach a huge amplification of the emitted photons resonantly interacting with the system. The presence of gain molecules in the considered nanoresonator systems makes it possible to obtain optical features that are able to unlock several applications. Two noticeable cases have been investigated: a 1D nanoresonator based on hyperbolic metamaterials and a 3D metal/dielectric spherical multishell. The former has been designed in the framework of the effective medium theory, in order to behave as an epsilon-near-zero-and-polemetamaterial, showing extraordinary light confinement and collimation. Such a peculiarity represents the key to lead to a RG behavior, a condition in which the system is demonstrated to behave as a self-amplifying perfect lens. Very high enhancement and spectral sharpness of 1 nm of the emitted light are demonstrated by means of a transfer matrix method simulation. The latter system consists of a metal/doped-dielectric multishell. A dedicated theoretical approach has been set up to finely engineer its doubly tunable resonant nature. The RG condition has been demonstrated also in this case. Finite element method-based simulations, together with an analytical model, clarify the electric field distribution inside the multishell and suggest the opportunity to use this device as a self-enhanced loss compensatedmultishell, being a favorable scenario for low-threshold SPASER action. Counterintuitively, exceeding the resonant gain amount of molecules in both systems causes a significant drop in the amplitude of the resonance.

Pyrite, FeS2, nanoparticles were obtained through a one-pot solvothermal synthesis, without surfactants, carried out at room pressure and mild temperature (~180°C). A thorough characterization of the products was thus performed, including scanning-electron-microscope micromorphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (both in the XANES and EXAFS regions). Monophasic pyrite products are obtained as aggregates having an approximate dimension of few hundreds of nm. The Scherrer analysis of the Bragg refections suggests that these aggregates are clusters of smaller units, having a mean size of ~25 nm. The XRD measurements point to a small but significant increase of the Fe– S bond distance (+1.7 %) with respect to reference data. The optical behavior of the pyrite nanoparticles is indistinguishable from that of the bulk pyrite. These results point to the one-pot synthesis as an efficient and "green" way of obtaining pyrite nanoparticles exhibiting the same technological properties as bulk pyrite. Indeed these nanoparticles can be considered as a product viable for numerous technological applications in the solar-energy conversion and storagefields.

Optical sensor technology offers significant opportunities in the field of medical research and clinical diagnostics, particularly for the detection of small numbers of molecules in highly diluted solutions. Several methods have been developed for this purpose, including label-free plasmonic biosensors based on metamaterials. However, the detection of lower-molecular-weight (<500 Da) biomolecules in highly diluted solutions is still a challenging issue owing to their lower polarizability. In this context, we have developed a miniaturized plasmonic biosensor platform based on a hyperbolic metamaterial that can support highly confined bulk plasmon guided modes over a broad wavelength range from visible to near infrared. By exciting these modes using a grating-coupling technique, we achieved different extreme sensitivity modes with a maximum of 30,000 nm per refractive index unit (RIU) and a record figure of merit (FOM) of 590. We report the ability of the metamaterial platform to detect ultralow-molecular-weight (244 Da) biomolecules at picomolar concentrations using a standard affinity model streptavidin–biotin.

We demonstrated by means of interferometry that optical vortices can be generated by diffraction of a laser beam from a birefringent nematic liquid crystal that spontaneously creates a periodic array of electro-convective domains and edge dislocations under an applied electric field. The diffracted beam of order m produced by an elementary dislocation comprises a number |m| of distinct optical vortices, each with unit topological charge. Birefringent liquid crystal arrays provide a fast, convenient, and promising way of generating and studying optical vortices. The used materials are inexpensive, fabrication processes are simple, and both input polarization and applied field can be used as external controls to switch the optical vortices on and off.

Nature as a source of inspiration for designing and fabricating nanostructured materials with unconventional properties is an unparalleled driving force of this work leading to low-loss metamaterials. Here, we report about a multipronged approach to create optical metamaterials based on plasmonic nanostructures, hierarchical organization and interplay between plasmon elements and excitonic molecules. This work is focused on strategies and approaches to produce gain to metamaterials across scales with the aim of realizing low-loss optical materials and unlocking their unconvetional electromagnetic properties. Finally, we describe how a biomimetic approach based on gain-functionalized bionanoparticle can be harnessed for diagnostics and theranostics.

Background.Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the only available technique for the non-invasive quantification of MIO. The native T1 mapping has recently been proposed as an alternative to the universally adopted T2* technique, due to the higher sensitivity for detection of changes associated with mild or early iron overload.

Background.The T2* cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold standard for the non invasive detection of myocardial iron overload (MIO). The native myocardial T1 mapping has been proposed as a complementary tool, thanks to its higher sensitivity in presence of small amounts of iron, but no data are available in literature about its clinical impact.

The acronym POLICRYPS indicates a nano/micro composite structure made of films of well aligned nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alternated to slices of almost pure polymer. Structures are fabricated by curing a homogeneous mixture of mesogenic material, monomer and a curing agent with UV radiation, under suitable physical and geometrical conditions. In particular, geometrical conditions determine (in the range 0.2 ÷ 15 μ m) the spatial periodicity of the realized sample, which can be utilized for transmitting, diffracting or reflecting an impinging light beam, with negligible scattering losses. The spatial modulation of the refractive index (from polymer to NLC) can be switched ON and OFF both by applying an electric field of few V/μ m or, in some cases, by irradiating the sample with a light beam of suitable wavelength. This electrical/optical tuneability is responsible for a series of distinctive characteristics of the optical effects produced by the structure, and determines the range of possible applications. In fact, in different geometries, the POLICRYPS can be exploited as a switchable holographic grating, a switchable optical phase modulator, a switchable beam splitter, a tuneable Bragg filter or it can be exploited as an electro-optical edge filter in an optical interrogation system.

Realization of highly efficient holographic structures can be obtained by combining the polymer liquid crystal polymer slices (POLICRYPS) technique and the use of a spatial light modulator. To achieve this result, a new prepolymer mixture is necessary that is sensitive to visible light and fulfills all requirements of the POLICRYPS technique. In this paper, we report on our efforts to realize this new mixture and on the first attempts made for fabricating one-dimensional POLICRYPS gratings. Newly obtained diffractive structures have been compared with standard POLICRYPS showing negligible differences.

Abstract: Colonic tumors located at the splenic flexure are rare and show a higher occlusive risk than other colorectal cancers. The totally laparoscopic segmental resection of splenic flexure represents a challenging procedure that requires adequate technical skills and for this reason it is still not widespread and validated. Between October 2010 and March 2012, a consecutive unselected series of eight (N = 8) patients underwent totally laparoscopic splenic flexure resection at our Institute. Data on patients’ demographics, disease features, operative details and short-term follow-up were prospectively recorded in a specific database and retrospectively analyzed. All the operations were performed or supervised by the same surgeon (I.S.). We used a four-port medial-to-lateral standardized technique with intracorporeal anastomosis. A selective vascular ligation was performed in all cases and the specimens were extracted through a protected incision. Perioperative care plan and surgical instrumentations were standardized. Complications were classified using the Clavien–Dindo classification system. No conversion to open surgery was registered. All cases achieved an adequate number of lymph nodes harvested (22.9 ± 5.2) and an oncologically correct resection of the tumor (proximal margin 7.0 ± 2.4 cm, distal margin 7.1 ± 2.8 cm). The mean hospital stay was 6.1 ± 1.3 days. Postoperative complication rate according to the Clavien–Dindo system was 37.5 %, but all the complications reported were grade I. We did not observe any reoperation or readmission within 60 days after discharge. Totally laparoscopic splenic flexure resection is a feasible and reproducible technique. A correct surgical indication and a standardized technique allow to perform an oncologically safe and functionally effective treatment.

The performance of all metamaterial-based applications is significantly limited by the inherent and strong energy dissipation present in metals, especially in the visible range. In fact, these materials suffer from rather strong damping of the plasmon fields which can become obstructive for most optical and photonic applications. Therefore, eliminating losses in optical metamaterials is critical for enabling their numerous potential applications. We experimentally demonstrate that the incorporation of gain material (fluorophores) in the high-local-field areas of a metamaterial subunits (gold core/silica shell nanoparticles) makes it possible to induce resonant energy transfer processes from gain units to plasmonic nanoparticles. A comparison between gain-assisted (nanoparticle–dye dispersion) and gain-functionalized (dye encapsulated into the shell) systems is reported. Fluorescence quenching and time-resolved spectroscopy along with modification of Rayleigh scattering and transmission of a probe beam as a function of impinging energy are key evidence of the strong coupling occurring between NPs and gain medium. The multipronged approach used to compensate losses in these metal-based subunits permits one to obtain important advances in materials science and paves the way toward further promising scientific research aimed to enable the wide range of electromagnetic properties of optical metamaterials.

The cell cycle consists of a number of complex biochemical pathways that ensure that the start of a particular event depends on the successful and right end of previous steps in the pathway. An important role is played by cyclin/cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) complexes which are critical regulators of cell cycle progression and RNA transcription. To ensure proper progression through each phase, cells have developed a series of orchestrated checkpoints that govern the different cellular kinases required for distinct cell cycle events. In particular, several cell cycle protein kinases, including members of the Aurora family and the Polo-like kinases, play critical roles in mitotic entry and chromosome segregation that ensure the correct formation of daughter cells. Tumour cell proliferation is frequently associated to both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms commonly affecting the expression of cell cycle regulatory proteins or causing an incompetent checkpoint control, resulting in aberrant responses to cellular damage. These alterations result not only in proliferative advantages but also in an increased susceptibility to the accumulation of additional genetic alterations that contribute to tumour progression and acquisition of more aggressive phenotypes. In the last years, the identification of anticancer drugs directed against critical cell cycle regulators has received particular attention. Specifically, several preclinical and clinical trials are addressing cdks or cell cycle protein kinase inhibitors. Starting from a description of cell cycle, this review summarizes the most recent studies on drugs targeting cell cycle regulators that are being used in cancer therapy.

The pathogenetic bases of HAART-associated lipodystrophy are still poorly known, even if it is clear that adipose tissue and its metabolism are sensitive to antiretroviral therapy alone and/or in combination with HIV infection. The NEDD8 system is essential for the regulation of protein degradation pathways involved in cell cycle progression, morphogenesis and tumorigenesis. We investigated the possible involvement of NEED8 in adipogenesis and, consequently, in HIV-related lipodystrophy.

Metasurfaces have been extensively engineered to produce a wide range of optical phenomena, allowing exceptional control over the propagation of light. However, they are generally designed as single-purpose devices without a modifiable postfabrication optical response, which can be a limitation to real-world applications. In this work, we report a nanostructured planar-fused silica metalens permeated with a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and gold nanoparticle solution. The physical properties of embedded NLCs can be manipulated with the application of external stimuli, enabling reconfigurable optical metasurfaces. We report the all-optical, dynamic control of the metalens optical response resulting from thermoplasmonic-induced changes of the NLC solution associated with the nematic–isotropic phase transition. A continuous and reversible tuning of the metalens focal length is experimentally demonstrated, with a variation of 80 μm (0.16% of the 5 cm nominal focal length) along the optical axis. This is achieved without direct mechanical or electrical manipulation of the device. The reconfigurable properties are compared with corroborating numerical simulations of the focal length shift and exhibit close correspondence.

Practice guidelines suggest the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators in patients with left ventricular ejection fractions (LVEF) ≤ 35% despite 3 to 6 months of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT). It remains unclear whether this strategy is appropriate for patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), who can experience reverse ventricular remodeling for up to 24 months after the initiation of GDMT. The aim of this study was to assess the longitudinal dynamic relationship between LVEF ≤ 35% and arrhythmic risk in patients with recent-onset nonischemic DCM on GDMT.
