Purpose: Optic neuritis is the most common optic neuropathy affecting adults, especially women. Lactational optic neuritis is a rare entity occurring during the postpartum period with a high chance of recurrence. Through this study, we evaluated the clinical profile and visual outcome of lactational optic neuritis. Methods: This was a retrospective study where patients with optic neuritis presenting during the first year of the postpartum period to the neuro-ophthalmology clinic between January 2016 and December 2022 were included in the study. Results: This study included seven eyes of six patients. The mean age of presentation was 24.6 years, with all patients presenting after the first 3 months of the postpartum period. All patients had unilateral involvement except one, presenting with painful vision loss. Best corrected visual acuity ranged from 6/18 to hand movements. Relative afferent pupillary defect and dyschromatopsia were present in all patients. Disc edema was seen in all but one case. Three patients were treated with steroids along with multivitamins, and the remaining three refused treatment with steroids, receiving multivitamins alone. All patients had complete recovery by the end of 12 weeks. Conclusion: Optic neuritis during lactation is attributed more to post-pregnancy immunological changes rather than lactation itself. The presentation and clinical features are similar to classic optic neuritis and remain an important differential diagnosis for visual dysfunction in the postpartum period. Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility and outcome of a real-time retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) telescreening strategy using videoconferencing in a community setting in India. Method: In a prospective study, trained allied ophthalmic personnel obtained the fundus images in the presence of the parents and local childcare providers. Analysis of images and parental counseling were done in real time by an ROP specialist located at a tertiary center using videoconferencing software. A subset of babies was also examined using bedside indirect ophthalmoscopy by an ROP care-trained ophthalmologist. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and correlation coefficient. Results: Over 9 months, we examined 576 babies (1152 eyes) in six rural districts of India. The parents accepted the model as they recognized that a remotely located specialist was evaluating all images in real time. The strategy saved the travel time for ROP specialists by 477 h (47.7 working days) and for parents (47,406 h or 1975.25 days), along with the associated travel cost. In a subgroup analysis (100 babies, 200 eyes), the technology had a high sensitivity (97.2%) and negative predictivity value (92.7%). It showed substantial agreement (k = 0.708) with the bedside indirect ophthalmoscopy by ROP specialists with respect to the detection of treatment warranting ROP. Also, the strategy helped train the participants. Conclusion: Real-time ROP telescreening using videoconferencing is sensitive enough to detect treatment warranting ROPs and saves skilled workforce and time. The real-time audiovisual connection allows optimal supervision of imaging, provides excellent training opportunities, and connects ophthalmologists directly with the parents. This paper presents a highly granular database of nearly 500 capital flow management measures (CFMs) that cover 14 instruments and 49 countries at monthly frequency between 2008 and 2021. It sheds light on the incidence of CFMs along previously unexplored dimensions such as the nature of instruments used, and the asset class and direction of capital flows to which they were targeted. The paper also presents new indices of capital account policies to characterize the usage, stance and intensity of CFM policies. In comparison with existing indices of capital controls, we find that our data reveal significant intra-year changes in CFMs even when other indices exhibit stability over long periods. We find that a 'stock-taking' version of our data generates similar assessments about episodic versus long-standing controls as some other indices, suggesting that existing indices may be capturing low-frequency characteristics of capital account policies. For many jurists and legal scholars, the question is no longer whether to espouse originalism but how to espouse it. This Article argues that critics have ceded too much ground by focusing on discrediting originalism as either bad history or shoddy linguistics. To disrupt the cycle of endless "methodological" refinements and effectively address originalism's continued popularity, critics must do two things: identify a better disciplinary analogue for originalist interpretation and advance an argument that moves beyond methods. Anthropology can assist with both tasks. Both anthropological analysis and originalist interpretation are premised on the goal of cultural translation--that is, on rendering holistic worldviews from another time-place intelligible to the translator's own context. Likewise, both anthropology and originalism often rely on a particular interpretive device--the Reasonable Man (or Reader)--to achieve their translational goals. This Article is the first to recognize the true goal of originalism as applied cultural translation. But analogizing to anthropology also reveals that originalism's greatest weakness is political and ethical rather than methodological. Pressing cultural translation into the service of state power is an inextricably colonialist endeavor: it does violence to those against whom translational insights are applied by taming and supplanting their worldviews based on racialized and gendered disparities of power. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century colonizing powers often literally used anthropological research to buttress their authority over colonized peoples. Today, originalist jurisprudence intentionally reinforces the political oppression of historically marginalized groups within the United States by magnifying the views of their historical oppressors. But whereas anthropology can exist independent of its use by political powers, originalism is inseparable from statecraft. By drawing on lessons learned in anthropology, this Article demonstrates that originalist analysis--however methodologically sound--is problematic because it uses the past as a colonialist resource.

Metal chalcohalides, owing to their higher stability over halides and greater tunability of electronic features over chalcogenides, open new avenues for investigating properties of materials. Complex metal chalcohalides can be a good choice for thermoelectric studies for their halide-like low thermal conductivity and chalcogenide-like high electrical conductivity. Here, we have investigated the thermoelectric properties of n-type Bi13S18Br2and utilized the concept of Fajans’ polarization to describe the formation of a dimer Bi24+and explained how it can help achieve high thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) of ∼1.0 at 748 K. This zT value is so far the highest-reported value for pristine metal chalcohalides. The existence of Bi24+subunit in Bi13S18Br2is experimentally verified by synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function (X-PDF) analysis. The complex structure of Bi13S18Br2having a large unit cell exhibits simultaneous dimer-cation rattler (i.e., “twin-rattler”), which decreases the lattice thermal conductivity drastically. We observed evidence of such low-energy rattling vibrations from DFT-calculated eigen mode visualizations of the phonon dispersion. The subvalent nature of Bi24+accommodates an extra electron in Bi(6pz) orbital, which helps form a weakly dispersed donor band just below the Fermi energy (EF), leading to a significant reduction in band gap (0.77 eV), which is favorable for high thermoelectric performance. Consequently, we obtained a semiconducting nature of n-type Bi13S18Br2with moderate electrical conductivity, as well as a high Seebeck coefficient. Our investigation presents the importance of fundamental chemistry in thermoelectrics and demonstrates the influence of subvalent twin-rattler in triggering high thermoelectric performance in metal chalcohalides.

Since the beginning of time, tuberculosis (TB) has been a fatal illness that predominantly affects the human lungs before spreading to other organs including the brain, spine, etc. The main elements of TB mitigation are age-dependent heterogeneity, identifying those who are latently infected, and treating them using the right diagnostic strategy. In this present work, the complex transmission mechanism of this disease in a population is described by a coupled system of integro-partial differential equations (IDE-PDE). The system's well-posedness requirement is confirmed. The proposed system's basic reproduction number (R 0) is obtained. This work provides a complete analysis of the qualitative properties of the model, including steady state existence, asymptotic smoothness of the solution semi-flow, uniform persistence of the endemic equilibrium, and the global asymptotic stability criterion. It is observed that in assessing the severity of the pandemic, the value of R 0 is crucial. Additionally, the stability results are visually illustrated by solving the model equations numerically while assuming two hypothetical cases. The current work also suggests several methods for reducing the value of the basic reproductive number (R 0) by manipulating a few parameter values, which may help to lessen the prevalence of TB in a community. This research paper aims to introduce the concept of lacunary ideal Cauchy sequences of fuzzy variables in a credibility space. We establish the interrelationships between this notion with lacunary ideal convergent sequences in the same structure from several aspects of credibility. Furthermore, we explore the concepts of strongly lacunary Cauchy, strongly ℐ{\mathcal{I}}-lacunary Cauchy, and strongly ℐ∗{\mathcal{I}^{\ast}}-lacunary Cauchy sequences of fuzzy variables within the context of credibility. We also examine the interconnections between these concepts and analyze their relationships.

Global challenges for massive plastic waste disposal and regular decrement of conventional resources, converting plastic and biomass seeds waste into transportation-grade fuels through co-pyrolysis offer a better option for providing a promising solution. This investigation signifies a thermodynamic power cycle model, and 4Es (Energy, Exergy, Environmental, Economic) analysis of a direct injection unmodified diesel engine powered with various blends of test fuels derived from thermo-catalytic co-pyrolysis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) wastes and Pongamia pinnataseeds at 500 °C with calcium oxide as catalyst, mixed with diesel. The fuel mixtures of pure diesel and pyrolytic test fuels are utilized for diesel engine testing with varying compression ratio. The synergistic effects of major parameters such as full engine load, varying compression ratios (16:1, 17:1, 18:1, and 19:1), and fuel blends (10, 20, 30, and 40 %) are considered for engine run. The Brake thermal energy was found to increase for the 20 % blend at 6.6 % (40 % load) in comparison to pure diesel. Also, the Brake specific fuel consumption was the least for the same blend, 0.31 kg/kWh at 18:1 CR. The smoke was also found to have lowered by 22 % for the 20 % blend in comparison to pure diesel. At a compression ratio of 18:1, the NOx formation also decreased by approximately 1.4 % in comparison to the pure diesel for almost all considered fuel blends. The fuel efficiency was observed to increase for the 20 % blend compared to pure diesel by 20 %. The cost and exergy destruction analysis also confirmed the D80PB20 to have the least and maximum values respectively for both parameters. The energy, exergy, emission, and economic (4Es) analysis confirmed the suitability of blended fuels for achieving improved engine performance and emissions. In addition, the economic and fuel sustainability analysis foster the techno-economic feasibility of the test fuels as compared to conventional diesel fuel.

A unified method toward the synthesis of functionalized diazepines and quinazolines through reorganization of the molecular skeleton has been devised. The process is indulged by electrical energy via a domino N1–N2bond cleavage followed by concomitant ring closing, initiating from cinnolines and indazoles as designed precursors. Additionally, an intermolecular ring homologation has also been established to synthesize densely functionalized dihydroquinazolines from 2,3-diaryl-indazoles and acetonitrile involving the same electrochemical strategy.

The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under ambient conditions is a promising method to generate ammonia (NH3), a crucial precursor for fertilizers and chemicals, without carbon emissions. Single-atom alloy catalysts (SAACs) have reinvigorated catalytic processes due to their high activity, selectivity, and efficient use of active atoms. Here, we employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations integrated with machine learning (ML) to investigate dodecahedral nanocluster-based SAACs for analyzing structure–activity relationships in eNRR. Over 300 nanocluster-based SAACs were screened with all the transition metals as dopants to develop an ML model predicting stability and catalytic performance. Facet sites were identified as optimal doping positions, particularly with late group transition metals showing superior stability and activity. Utilizing DFT+ML, we identified 8 highly suitable SAACs for eNRR. Interestingly, the number of valence d-electrons in dopants proved crucial in screening for eNRR activity. These catalysts exhibited low activity in hydrogen evolution reaction, further enhancing their suitability for eNRR. This successful ML-driven approach accelerates catalyst design and discovery, holding significant practical implications.

A protected tripeptide Boc-l-Leu-5-AIA-Aib-OMe was synthesized where 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-AIA), a rigid non-coded aromatic γ-amino acid is incorporated as central residue. The single crystal X-ray diffraction study indicates that the peptide self-assembles into supramolecular sheet through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction N–H⋯O and π···πinteraction.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) and PET disposal are significant environmental issues. Synthesizing activated charcoal and electrospun PET nanofiber mats using waste plastic bottles as carbon precursors has potential for formaldehyde sensing. Solvent-based electrospinning produces recycled PET nanofibers, with varying amounts of AC loading (0–1.25 Wt%). The material properties of these NF mats were determined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Spectroscopy (TEM), Infrared spectroscopy (IR), Tensile testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Water Contact Angle (WCA). The NF film mat with an AC content of 0.75 Wt% exhibited the best current response, which in turn was fabricated to form a resistive sensor of HCHO by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The prepared sensor exhibited an extensive dynamic response range (1–300 ppm) with low limit of detection (0.352 ppm), ultrasensitivity, excellent selectivity, and reproducibility. The electrospinning technique to generate PET nanofiber mats and ionothermal synthesis of N-doped AC, from used PET bottles, other than being an easy and ultrasensitive platform for formaldehyde sensing, will also achieve maintaining a closed carbon loop. The flexible sensing platform has the capability to function as a suitable carrier for immobilizing other biological or harmful chemical entities as recognition elements on the surface of electrospinning nanofibers, paving the way for the development of additional electrospun nanofibers to establish ultrasensitive sensors with favorable sensitivity and analytical performance. Other than that, this sensor can be utilized for detecting HCHO in adulterated milk samples, juices, and other liquid food products.

Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) have emerged as indispensable tools in chemosensing applications1–4. ISFETs operate by converting changes in the composition of chemical solutions into electrical signals, making them ideal for environmental monitoring5,6, healthcare diagnostics7and industrial process control8. Recent advancements in ISFET technology, including functionalized multiplexed arrays and advanced data analytics, have improved their performance9,10. Here we illustrate the advantages of incorporating machine learning algorithms to construct predictive models using the extensive datasets generated by ISFET sensors for both classification and quantification tasks. This integration also sheds new light on the working of ISFETs beyond what can be derived solely from human expertise. Furthermore, it mitigates practical challenges associated with cycle-to-cycle, sensor-to-sensor and chip-to-chip variations, paving the way for the broader adoption of ISFETs in commercial applications. Specifically, we use data generated by non-functionalized graphene-based ISFET arrays to train artificial neural networks that possess a remarkable ability to discern instances of food fraud, food spoilage and food safety concerns. We anticipate that the fusion of compact, energy-efficient and reusable graphene-based ISFET technology with robust machine learning algorithms holds the potential to revolutionize the detection of subtle chemical and environmental changes, offering swift, data-driven insights applicable across a wide spectrum of applications.

Developing new anticancer agents can be useful, with the ability to diagnose and treat cancer worldwide. Previously, we focused on examining the effects of nonoxidovanadium(IV) complexes on insulin mimetic and cytotoxicity activity. In this study, in addition to the cytotoxic activity, we evaluated their bioimaging properties. This study investigates the synthesis of four stable nonoxido VIVcomplexes [VIV(L1–4)2] (1–4) using aroylhydrazone ligands (H2L1–4) and their full characterization in solid state and the solution phase stability using various physicochemical techniques. The biomolecular (DNA/HSA) interaction of the complexes was evaluated by using conventional methods. The in vitrocytotoxicity of 1–4was studied against A549 and LN-229 cancer cell lines and found that drug 2displayed the highest activity among the four. Since 1–4are fluorescently active, live cell imaging was used to evaluate their cellular localization activity. Complexes specifically target the lysosome and damage lysosome integrity by producing an excessive amount (9.7-fold) of reactive oxygen species (ROS) compared to the control, which may cause cell apoptosis. Overall, this study indicates that 2has the greatest potential for the development of multifunctional theranostic agents that combine imaging capabilities and anticancer properties of nonoxidovanadium(IV)-based metallodrugs.

Multi drug resistance (MDR) in breast carcinoma still poses a significant impairment to successful chemotherapy. As the arsenal of anticancer agents increases with improved preclinical methods, the growth of therapeutic drug combinations is now unprecedented. The malignancies addressed by mono drugs often fail to limit cancer progression, resulting in resistant cancer, thereby offering combinatorial therapies a terrific edge over monodrug regimes. However, the selection of drug combinations required enough preliminary evidence for their synergistic effect. The fundamental mechanisms of MDR to chemotherapeutics are associated with the overexpression of membrane efflux pumps, alternations in drug targets, and increased drug metabolism. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for drugs to overcome resistance produced on their own or by another different drug action. In this context, herein, we report a simple delivery system for coencapsulation and intracellular codelivery of dual-drug thymoquinone (TQ) and doxorubicin (DOX) to resensitize DOX-resistant MDA MB231 cell line (231 R). The 231 R cell line developed in our lab showed an enhanced expression of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters P-gp1/MDR-1 and a declined miR-298 expression. The present delivery system is based on amine-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), in which the side chain amine functional group was used to react with the carbonyl group of TQ, which acts as a pro-drug system (TQ-MSN) to release TQ and DOX simultaneously. DOX was encapsulated later into the above TQ-MSN by a simple diffusion method. The drugs containing MSNs were further coated with a hyaluronic acid-conjugated PEG–PLGA polymer (HA@TQ-DOX-MSN). This simple nanostrategy interferes with the MDR-1/miR-298 cross-talk, thereby allowing a significant reduction in drug efflux from the cell and highlighting a promising nanotechnology-based combinatorial delivery approach in managing breast cancer chemoresistance.

Scaffolds play a crucial role in bone tissue engineering to support the defect area through bone regeneration and defect reconstruction. Promising tissue regeneration without negative repercussions and avoidance of the lifelong presence inside the body make bioresorbable metals prosper in the field of regenerative medicine. Recently, Zn and its alloys have emerged as promising biodegradable materials for their moderate degradation rate and satisfactory biocompatibility. Nevertheless, it is very challenging for cells to adhere and grow over the Zn surface alone, which influences the tissue-implant integration. In this study, an attempt has been made to systematically investigate the bioactivity responses in terms of in vitro hemocompatibility, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and in vivo biocompatibility of newly developed Zn–2Cu–0.5Mn/Mg alloy scaffolds with different surface roughness. The rough surface of Zn–2Cu–0.5Mg shows the highest degradation rate of 0.16 mm/yr. The rough surface exhibits a prominent role in the adsorption of protein, further enhancing cell adhesion. Concentration-dependent alloy extract shows the highest cell proliferation for 12.5% of the extract with a maximum cell viability of 101% in Zn–2Cu–0.5Mn and 108% in Zn–2Cu–0.5Mg after 3 d. Acceptable hemolysis percentages (less than 5%) with promising anticoagulation properties are observed for all of the conditions. Enhanced antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureusand Escherichia coli) activity due to a significant effect of ions illustrates the maximum killing effect on the bacterial colony for the rough Zn–2Cu–0.5Mg alloy. In addition, it is observed that for rough Zn–2Cu–0.5Mn/Mg alloys, the inflammatory response is minimal after subcutaneous implantation, and neo-bone tissue forms in the defect areas of the rat femur with satisfactory biosafety response. The osseointegration property of the Zn–2Cu–0.5Mg alloy is comparable to that of the Zn–2Cu–0.5Mn alloy. Therefore, the rough surface of the Zn–2Cu–0.5Mg alloy has the potential to enhance biocompatibility and promote better osseointegration activity with host tissues for various biomedical applications.
