Recent theological and philosophical accounts of race have rightly called into question race and racial identity's rootedness in the created order. If race is not a fact of human biology or physiology but is instead the product of imposing malicious institutional judgments on members of the human community, does the Christian confession of faith in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting entail a resurrection and redemption fromracial identity? Building on the work of Jonathan Tran and Eleonore Stump, this author argues that race persists in the eschatological state as a healed wound or scar that indexes the lamentable past from which we have been redeemed.

Breast cancers are complex cellular ecosystems where heterotypic interactions play central roles in disease progression and response to therapy. However, our knowledge of their cellular composition and organization is limited. Here we present a single-cell and spatially resolved transcriptomics analysis of human breast cancers. We developed a single-cell method of intrinsic subtype classification (SCSubtype) to reveal recurrent neoplastic cell heterogeneity. Immunophenotyping using cellular indexing of transcriptomes and epitopes by sequencing (CITE-seq) provides high-resolution immune profiles, including new PD-L1/PD-L2+macrophage populations associated with clinical outcome. Mesenchymal cells displayed diverse functions and cell-surface protein expression through differentiation within three major lineages. Stromal-immune niches were spatially organized in tumors, offering insights into antitumor immune regulation. Using single-cell signatures, we deconvoluted large breast cancer cohorts to stratify them into nine clusters, termed ‘ecotypes’, with unique cellular compositions and clinical outcomes. This study provides a comprehensive transcriptional atlas of the cellular architecture of breast cancer.

There has been an emergence in big data analytics since it plays a crucial role within the IoT sector as data is augmenting at a great depth and scale, but considerable uncertainty still holds regarding how firms have to employ big data analytics for the capitalization of the IoT. The research paper argues the importance of presenting a more refined interpretation of how close big data analytics and the IoT are because they always tend to be related through an economical and technological perspective. The central core principle assertions have been made. First, there is a need for the clarification of various elements, shaping and configuring several discourses within the IoT. It is realized that the IoT has been segmented to be a complex, multi-scale, technological, and a multi-level data infrastructure which tends to be uncertain and emergent. Secondly, the primary characteristics of the IoT tend to be intimidating authority capacities focusing on big data analytics. Third, the effect of the IoT via big data analytics used in the perfection of sustainable futures has emerged several queries about the role of innovation and research.

A 28-year-old with borderline left hip dysplasia who underwent arthroscopic acetabuloplasty, femoral osteochondroplasty, and labral repair for femoroacetabular impingement. She did well for 8 years, though required arthroscopic capsulolabral adhesion release 2 years after the initial procedure. After this period of stability, she developed left hip pain during pregnancy. Radiographs demonstrated progressive osteoarthritis that lead to total hip arthroplasty at age 37.

Nature provides numerous examples of self-assembly that can potentially be implemented for materials applications. Considerable attention has been given to one-dimensional cross-β or amyloid structures that can serve as templates for wire growth or strengthen materials such as glue or cement. Here, we demonstrate controlled amyloid self-assembly based on modifications of β-solenoid proteins. They occur naturally in several contexts (e.g., antifreeze proteins, drug resistance proteins) but do not aggregate in vivodue to capping structures or distortions at their ends. Removal of these capping structures and regularization of the ends of the spruce budworm and rye grass antifreeze proteins yield micron length amyloid fibrils with predictable heights, which can be a platform for biomaterial-based self-assembly. The design process, including all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, purification, and self-assembly procedures are described. Fibril formation with the predicted characteristics is supported by evidence from thioflavin-T fluorescence, circular dichroism, dynamic light scattering, and atomic force microscopy. Additionally, we find evidence for lateral assembly of the modified spruce budworm antifreeze fibrils with sufficient incubation time. The kinetics of polymerization are consistent with those for other amyloid formation reactions and are relatively fast due to the preformed nature of the polymerization nucleus.

In this article the author comments on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) sound science approach to pesticide regulation which is believed the culprit of the so-called phenomenon colony collapse disorder (CCD). The author asserts that bee researchers blame EPA-approved agricultural insecticides for CCD, but the federal agency refuses to take the chemicals off the market. He contends that the CCD case is a manifestation of drawbacks of EPA's approach to pesticide regulation.

We previously described a group of patients of Chinese ancestry who presented with optic nerve appearance and visual field loss suggestive of glaucoma but did not show progression characteristic of this disease for up to 7 years. Methylnitrosourea (MNU) is a potent carcinogen and teratogen that is associated with central nervous system, craniofacial, skeletal, ocular, and appendicular birth defects following transplacental exposure at critical time points during development, and preliminary studies have suggested that nonspecific maternal immunostimulation may offer protection against development of these birth defects.Our study examined morphologic alterations in fetal limb and digital development and placental integrity following maternal exposure to MNU on GD 9 in CD‐1 mice, and characterized the improvement in placental integrity and abrogation of fetal defects following maternal immune stimulation with interferon‐gamma (IFN‐γ) on GD 7.Fetal limbs were significantly shortened (p < 0.0001) and incidence of limb and digital defects (syndactyly, polydactyly, oligodactyly, clubbing, and webbing) was dramatically increased following midgestational maternal MNU exposure. Maternal immune stimulation with IFN‐γ on GD 7 lessened incidence of fetal limb shortening and maldevelopment on GD 12 and 14. Further, disruption of placental spongiotrophoblast integrity, increased cell death in placental trophoblasts with increased intercellular spaces in the spongiotrophoblast layer and minimal inflammation, and increased loss of fetal labyrinthine endothelial cells from MNU‐exposed dams suggested that MNU‐induced placental breakdown may contribute to fetal limb and digital maldevelopment. MNU + IFN‐γ was associated with diminished cell death within all layers of the placenta, especially in the labyrinthine layer.These data verify improved distal limb development in MNU‐exposed mice as a result of maternal IFN‐γ administration, and suggest a link between placental integrity and proper fetal development. This investigation was designed to answer several research questions. First, using each participant's dominant score to place that individual into one of the four Children's Role Inventory categories, what would be the distribution of college students across the categories? Second, is there a relationship between scores on scales of the Children's Role Inventory and (a) on the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale and (b) on scales of the Defense Style Questionnaire? 236 undergraduate students at a southern university completed the above questionnaires. The distribution of participants over Children's Role Inventory categories was Hero 179, Mascot 41, Scapegoat 1, Lost Child 9, and Not Classified 6. After Bonferroni correction, significant positive but small correlations were reported between the Hero Scale of the Children's Role Inventory and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, as well as between the Hero Scale of the Children's Role Inventory and the Adaptive Scale of the Defense Style Questionnaire.

Although descriptive studies have demonstrated that child molesters are heterogeneous on numerous variables (Knight, Rosenberg, & Schneider, 1985), no classification systems have been constructed that divide child molesters into reliable, cohesive subgroups. This critical gap in our knowledge hampers the efficacy of clinical decisions about the treatment, management, and disposition of these offenders. The child molester typology presented here has been developed to fulfill the need for a clearly operationalized, reliable, valid system to address the problem of the manifest diversity of these offenders. This typology is the product of a research program that has integrated both deductive/rational and inductive/empirical strategies for generating and testing taxonomic systems (Knight, 1988; Knight & Prentky, in press). We present here the criteria for applying this system and the interrater reliability coefficients for assigning a sample of committed offenders to these proposed types.

The authors conducted a comparative study of the supervision of student teachers and student counselors and their development. The authors were interested in whether student practicum progress and practicum supervisory strategies are consistent with a developmental model. Findings for the progress of student counselors were consistent with a developmental model; those for student teachers were not. Supervision strategies for the supervision of both student counselors and student teachers were consistent with a developmental model. The authors suggest inservice training in supervision for cooperating teachers and additional research to validate inservice training strategies.

To date, research on university-industry relations in biotechnology in the United States has focused on the direct and immediate effects of industry involvement with university scientists on the culture of academic science. Attention has been aimed at restrictions on the flow of scientific information and patron roles in agenda setting. Drawing on ethnographic and documentary data, this article explores the indirect and pervasive effects on the practices of academic scientists of undertaking research in an environment shaped by the US intellectual property regime and an industry's historical domination of a field of scientific investigation.

The present study examined exposure to and use of pornography in the familial, developmental and criminal histories of 38 rapists and 26 child molesters incarcerated at the Massachusetts Treatment Center. While both groups reported similar exposure to pornography in the home and during development, child molesters indicated significantly more exposure than rapists in adulthood and were significantly more likely both to use such materials prior to and during their offenses and to employ pornography to relieve an impulse to act out. The findings are discussed with regards to the “catharsis hypothesis” and the role of pornography in the commission of sexual offenses for certain types of rapists and child molesters.

This study of 108 convicted, incarcerated rapists and their 389 victims had two goals. The first goal was to examine empirically the hypothesized interaction of differentiated subgroups of rapists with combative and noncombative victim responses. If such an interaction exists, it is imperative to understand its implications for a potential victim of sexual assault. Consequently, the second goal was to address that issue by setting forth clinically derived recommendations for alternative resistive responses based upon the presumptive psychological and motivational themes underlying four subgroups of rapists. Although relatively abstract suggestions are being made about behavior in a highly traumatic situation, knowledge may be the only weapon a victim has. As such, knowledge can provide a sense of power as well as the confidence necessary to act rather than resign out of helplessness.

This study involved an examination of effects of a cognitive-behavioral group condition, a reminiscence treatment group condition, and an activity group condition on anxiety and life satisfaction for senior citizens, aged sixty-five and older. No significant differences on life satisfaction and trait anxiety were found for the groups at pretest, posttest, and follow-up. A significant ANOVA for state anxiety at follow-up was followed by directional t-tests which were not significant in the predicted direction. The differences on state anxiety observed at follow-up appear to have resulted from improvement of the reminiscence group. Suggestions were made for further research on group treatment of the elderly.

Inhalation injury has emerged as the number-one cause of fatality in the burned patient. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy and 133Xe scanning complement traditional clinical signs of inhalation injury and have led to discovery of a higher incidence of these injuries among patients with burns. Patients with inhalation injury typically demonstrate three stages: acute pulmonary insufficiency, pulmonary edema, and bronchopneumonia, all of which carry at least 50 per cent mortality rates. Treatment consists of intubation for signs of respiratory distress, pulmonary toilet, humidification of inspired air, and antibiotics for documented infection.

In Olson, Wright, and McKell's recent paper on the design of oil pollution detection schedules, an interesting and inventive development and application of a Markov Decision Process was presented. Optimal schedules for patrol flights of surveillance aircraft were found using linear programming. In this paper the model has been reformulated as a discrete time semi-Markov process. Significant computational advantages accrue from this alternative approach.

Pulse oximeters have been widely used since the 1980s as they are considered to provide a safe, convenient, noninvasive method of estimating blood oxygen saturation. Initially used in the operating room by anesthesiologists, pulse oximetry has become ubiquitous in the healthcare setting. Although rare, serious burn injuries secondary to pulse oximetry have been reported. These include blistering or full-thickness burns of distal phalanges, in some cases requiring amputation and/or grafting;2–4thermal burns in the setting of poor peripheral circulation;5,6and extremity burns on infants with cases of gangrene and digit loss.7–13We present a case of a full-thickness burn arising in a 17-month-old child, which required further therapy for resolution.

Basal breast cancer is associated with younger age, early relapse, and a high mortality rate. Here, we use unbiased droplet-based single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to elucidate the cellular basis of tumor progression during the specification of the basal breast cancer subtype from the luminal progenitor population in the MMTV-PyMT (mouse mammary tumor virus-polyoma middle tumor-antigen) mammary tumor model. We find that basal-like cancer cells resemble the alveolar lineage that is specified upon pregnancy and encompass the acquisition of an aberrant post-lactation developmental program of involution that triggers remodeling of the tumor microenvironment and metastatic dissemination. This involution mimicry is characterized by a highly interactive multicellular network, with involution cancer-associated fibroblasts playing a pivotal role in extracellular matrix remodeling and immunosuppression. Our results may partially explain the increased risk and poor prognosis of breast cancer associated with childbirth.

In this article, the author discusses the article "Reinventing Technology Assessment," by Richard E. Sclove which was published in the Fall 2010 issue of the journal "Issues in Science and Technology." Sclove accordingly has elaborated the virtues of citizen participation in technology assessment and demands for support towards participatory assessment approaches. The author contends that these approaches would require proper software and attention to personal integration and online cooperation.

In this article, the author discusses the engagement of people with participatory technology assessment in the U.S. He suggests the promotion of educational programs dealing with ideas such as science and technology and seminars for policymakers reflecting on the difference of knowledge and values. The author notes that the recruitment of participants for participatory initiatives is considered as a challenge due to the people's lack of interest for civic participation.

The authors assessed the Vocational Preference Inventory as a discriminator of attachment styles. Although the means for some of the six career interest scales completed by 200 undergraduates varied somewhat across four attachment style categories, substantial within-group variances masked apparent differences. None of the scales met the minimum criterion of Fto enter; thus none of these scales discriminated among categories of attachment style.

Sonication imparts localized high pressure and temperature to a fluid. In sonoelectrochemistry, high intensity sonication is imparted to an electrode placed far from the sonicator. Here, possible advantages of a lower intensity sonicator placed near the electrode surface are considered. A sketch of the acoustic pressure in the thin layer configuration differs from the response found for the electrode far from the sonicator. Acoustic pressure is proportional to the energy at the electrode surface. For a given oscillator intensity, the acoustic pressure is enhanced for the electrode near the oscillator surface. The limits of what defines a thin layer configuration are estimated. The sketch is derived by solution of the wave equation that defines the acoustic pressure.

Uniaxial stretching was used to promote desirable morphological changes to membranes composed of 3M Corporation's 825 equivalent weight (EW) perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer. Stretching of solution cast PFSA films to a draw ratio of 4 was carried out prior to a high temperature annealing step. Film stretching increased the polymer crystallinity by 22% with an improvement in the membrane's mechanical properties. There was a small increase in proton conductivity after stretching, with a substantial decrease in methanol permeability. In direct methanol fuel cell tests at 60 degC and 1.0 M methanol, the power density at 0.4 V with a stretched 3M 825 EW membrane was 72 mW/cm2, which was considerably greater that that obtained with a solution cast unstretched membrane (28 mW/cm2) or with a commercial Nafion 117 membrane (55 mW/cm2).
