We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the use of the electromagnetic distal targeting system in treating humeral shaft fracture.

We conduct a systematic and qualitative review of the current literature to evaluate studies that described bilateral ruptures of the extensor mechanism of the knee.

High-performance anion exchange chromatography coupled with pulsed amperometric detection was used for the quantitative determination of total and free sugars in olive oil mill waste waters (OMWW). Automated amino acid ion chromatography was employed to analyse total and free amino acids in the same OMWW. Sugars were analysed in samples pre-purified by means of a three-step purification procedure involving: (i) methanol precipitation of OMWW; (ii) dialysis of the obtained solid and liquid fractions; and (iii) chromatographic purification on RP18 phase followed by Amberlite resin. The amino acids were determined directly in samples obtained from the first two steps performed for sugar analysis. The analysis carried out with the reported methodologies allowed the quantitative determination of total sugars and amino acids and the differentiation between their free and bound forms. The sugars determined were arabinose, fructose, galactose, glucose, rhamnose, xylose, galacturonic and glucuronic acids, and the amino acids were Asp, Glu, Thr, Ser, Pro, Gly, Ala, Val, Met, Ile, Leu, Tyr, Phe, Lys, His, Arg and Cys. Asn, Gln, and Trp were not detected. The technological, biotechnological and environmental advantages arising from this analytical methodology applied to OMWW are briefly discussed. Samples of wet and dry depositions were collected during the period December 1996‐September 1998 at 16 stations located at different latitudes in the Campania Region (southwest Italy). Most of the rainwater samples showed neutral to alkaline reaction, with pH values below 5.50 only in the southern part of the study area. Chemical composition of rainfall was somehow characterized by high level of acid precursors, especially sulphates of possible marine and transboundary origin, mainly Saharan dust, with higher depositions in the south‐eastern sectors. No correlation was found between H+and strong acidic anions (non marine sulphate and nitrate), as well as between SO42−and Ca2+and acidic species and H+. Concentrations of trace metals (zinc, copper, lead) and Ca2+showed distinct east‐west gradient in dry deposition as a possible consequence of long distance transport of Saharan dust. The mineralogy of the dry contributions revealed the prevalence of quartz, feldspars, illite, chlorite and smectite. In some samples palygorskite, kaolinite and dolomite were also recognized.

Abstract:: We reviewed the clinical results of 332 fractures treated with the Ilizarov external fixator between 1984 and 1993. The locations of the involved bones were: tibia, 247 (including 28 with tibial pylons); femur, 47; humerus, 21; forearm, 12 and calcaneus, 5. The clinical outcomes of this series were retrospectively evaluated by radiological and clinical rating systems. In the tibial fractures, results in 71.1% were categorized as excellent or good, without deep infection; 63.3% of the tibial pylon fractures, mostly open, also showed excellent or good results. In the femoral fractures, which were mostly localized at the metaphysis or distal epiphysis, 72% showed excellent or good results, but the patients com-monly complained of knee stiffness. Limitations of range of movement (ROM) in the elbow and the wrist were common in patients with forearm fracture, but ROM was regained after physical therapy. According to the clinical results of the present study, we believed that Ilizarov external fixation was best indicated for tibial fractures, because of its advantage of allowing early weight-bearing. Ilizarov external fixation was also best indicated for: (1) open fractures, (2) comminuted fractures, (3) intra-articular fractures, and (4) fractures with bony defect.

Dislocations of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are an uncommon injury and only few cases of anterior dislocations have been reported.

A peri-implant fracture near the volar plate of distal radius represent a very rare injury. The main factor of this lesion is high energy trauma on the wrist. We report a case of a 61-year-old woman with a peri-implant fracture located just proximally to the plate and a fracture of the ulnar head that occurred after a simple fall. The patient was surgically treated by plate and screws removal. The fracture was fixed using a longer volar plate for the radial fracture and a plate for the head ulnar fracture. Different factors such as osteoporosis, BMI and screw position could influence the fracture pattern. However, considering growing use of plates for distal radius fracture fixation, the frequency of these kind of fracture will probably increase.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is considered to be a multifactorial and polygenic disease and diagnosis is mainly clinical and radiological. Correlation between radiographic data and clinical status has been reported. However, very few studies, especially in Caucasian people, describe the association between the Kellgren and Lawrence OA grading scale (KL) and genetic alterations to better understand OA etiopathogenesis and susceptibility. In order to update the knee OA grading, in this study we assessed the associations between KL grade, clinical features such as American Knee Society Score (AKSS), age, and polymorphisms in the principal osteoarthritis susceptibility (OS) genes in Sicilian individuals.

We aimed to assess the incidence and hospitalization rate of hip and "minor" fragility fractures in the Italian population.
