Objective: The aim was to identify hospital and county characteristics associated with variation in breadth and depth of hospital partnerships with a broad range of organizations to improve population health. Data Sources: The American Hospital Association Annual Survey provided data on hospital partnerships to improve population health for the years 2017-2019. Design: The study adopts the dimensional publicness theory and social capital framework to examine hospital and county characteristics that facilitate hospital population health partnerships. The two dependent variables were number of local community organizations that hospitals partner with (breadth) and level of engagement with the partners (depth) to improve population health. The independent variables include three dimensions of publicness: Regulative, Normative and Cultural-cognitive measured by various hospital factors and presence of social capital present at county level. Covariates in the multivariate analysis included hospital factors such as bed-size and system membership. Methods: We used hierarchical linear regression models to assess various hospital and county factors associated with breadth and depth of hospital-community partnerships, adjusting for covariates. Principal Findings: Nonprofit and public hospitals provided a greater breadth (coefficient, 1.61; SE, 0.11; p < 0.001 and coefficient, 0.95; SE, 0.14; p < 0.001) and depth (coefficient, 0.26, SE, 0.04; p < 0.001 & coefficient, 0.13; SE, 0.05; p < 0.05) of partnerships than their for-profit counterparts, partially supporting regulative dimension of publicness. At a county level, we found community social capital positively associated with breadth of partnerships (coefficient, 0.13; SE, 0.08; p < 0.001). Conclusions: An environment that promotes collaboration between hospitals and organizations to improve population health may impact the health of the community by identifying health needs of the community, targeting social determinants of health, or by addressing patient social needs. However, findings suggest that publicness dimensions at an organizational level, which involves a culture of public value, maybe more important than county factors to achieve community building through partnerships. The experimental exploration of the chemical space of crystalline materials, especially metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), requires multiparameter control of a large set of reactions, which is unavoidably time-consuming and labor-intensive when performed manually. To accelerate the rate of material discovery while maintaining high reproducibility, we developed a machine learning algorithm integrated with a robotic synthesis platform for closed-loop exploration of the chemical space for polyoxometalate-scaffolding metal–organic frameworks (POMOFs). The eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was optimized by using updating data obtained from the uncertainty feedback experiments and a multiclass classification extension based on the POMOF classification from their chemical constitution. The digital signatures for the robotic synthesis of POMOFs were represented by the universal chemical description language (χDL) to precisely record the synthetic steps and enhance the reproducibility. Nine novel POMOFs including one with mixed ligands derived from individual ligands through the imidization reaction of POM amine derivatives with various aldehydes have been discovered with a good repeatability. In addition, chemical space maps were plotted based on the XGBoost models whose F1 scores are above 0.8. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the synthesized POMOFs indicate superior electron transfer compared to the molecular POMs and the direct effect of the ratio of Zn, the type of ligands used, and the topology structures in POMOFs for modulating electron transfer abilities.

Understanding and characterizing the intrinsic properties of charge carrier transport across the interfaces in van der Waals heterostructures is critical to their applications in modern electronics, thermoelectrics, and optoelectronics. However, there are very few published cross-plane resistivity measurements of thin samples because these inherently 2-probe measurements must be corrected for contact and lead resistances. Here, we present a method to extract contact resistances and metal lead resistances by fitting the width dependence of the contact end voltages of top and bottom electrodes of different contact widths to a model based on current crowding. These contributions are then subtracted from the total 2-probe cross-plane resistance to obtain the cross-plane resistance of the material itself without needing multiple devices and/or etching steps. This approach was used to measure cross-plane resistivities of a (PbSe)1(VSe2)1heterostructure containing alternating layers of PbSe and VSe2with random in-plane rotational disorder. Several samples measured exhibited a 4 order of magnitude difference between cross-plane and in-plane resistivities over the 6–300 K temperature range. We also reported the observation of charge density wave transition in the cross-plane transport of the (PbSe)1(VSe2)1heterostructure. The device fabrication process is fully liftoff compatible, and the method developed enables the straightforward measurement of the resistivity anisotropy of most thin film materials with nm thicknesses.

ABSTRACTElite athlete mothers are an under researched population. This is remiss given their increasing prevalence, sporting successes, and importance as role models that challenge dominant and traditional views of pregnancy and women in sport. Indeed, sporting organisations are gradually adopting policies to support elite athlete mothers. That said, elite sport is part of a complex social and economic environment that is likely to shape support available to elite athlete mothers. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to explore the shared and different experiences of elite athlete mothers in and out of UK national funding programmes. Longitudinal semi-structured individual interviews with two elite athlete mothers, one Paralympian receiving funding and one Olympian not in receipt of funding, were conducted. Bengtsson’s 4-stage process was adopted to analyse data through the bioecological model. Data were merged and reorganised into two creative non-fiction dialogues; ‘Baby Ban’ and ‘We are not the same’. These reveal that national funding bodies’ pregnancy and motherhood guidelines, and funding policy were found to conflict, causing confusion and unsupportive experiences. Inconsistencies appeared in the exosystem guidelines and policy, and resulted in differences in communication, pressure, and support that prompted more positive interpersonal experiences for funded athletes than unfunded. Effective communication appeared as crucial for understanding athletes’ needs and to foster a supportive environment, irrespective of funding status. This study was the first to apply a creative non-fiction approach and a bioecological lens to elite athlete mothers’ postpartum experiences and explore the inequalities between those who are funded and unfunded.

ABSTRACTA think aloud (TA) protocol was used to explore whether thought processes and attentional focus differed between well-trained, trained, and recreationally-trained runners across a 5km tempo run. Eighteen runners completed a self-paced 5km tempo treadmill run. Participants were asked to TA and provided their ratings of perceived exertion alongside breathlessness, cognitive demands and lower-body effort, every 1 km. Verbalisations were coded using content analysis into categories and sub-categories and were compared across groups and over every kilometre of the run. Speed and Rate of Perceived Exertion scores increased over the 5km but there were no significant differences across groups. The nature of verbalisations for categories and sub-categories varied across groups with the majority of the well-trained runner’s thoughts relating to active self-regulation, while internal sensory monitoringwas used most frequently by the trained runners and distractionwas most widely verbalised by the recreationally-trained group. There was a statistically significant difference between the use of active self-regulationacross groups, with differences also seen for the sub-categories of running formand motivational self-talk. The number of verbalisations across categories changed over time, but there was no statistically significant interaction with group. Results highlight active self-regulatory differences between well-trained, trained and recreationally-trained runners in the study, suggesting that it is likely not just exposure to running that enables runners to develop effective psychological skills. Findings could be used by coaches to offer targeted support and opportunities for lower-level runners to develop effective cognitive skills to impact on performance and running adherence.

In-sensor and near-sensor computing architectures enable multiply accumulate operations to be carried out directly at the point of sensing. In-sensor architectures offer dramatic power and speed improvements over traditional von Neumann architectures by eliminating multiple analog-to-digital conversions, data storage, and data movement operations. Current in-sensor processing approaches rely on tunable sensors or additional weighting elements to perform linear functions such as multiply accumulate operations as the sensor acquires data. This work implements in-sensor computing with an oscillatory retinal neuron device that converts incident optical signals into voltage oscillations. A computing scheme is introduced based on the frequency shift of coupled oscillators that enables parallel, frequency multiplexed, nonlinear operations on the inputs. An experimentally implemented 3 × 3 focal plane array of coupled neurons shows that functions approximating edge detection, thresholding, and segmentation occur in parallel. An example of inference on handwritten digits from the MNIST database is also experimentally demonstrated with a 3 × 3 array of coupled neurons feeding into a single hidden layer neural network, approximating a liquid-state machine. Finally, the equivalent energy consumption to carry out image processing operations, including peripherals such as the Fourier transform circuits, is projected to be <20 fJ/OP, possibly reaching as low as 15 aJ/OP.

Anaphylaxis has been increasing in recent years, with common triggers in infants being milk and eggs. Currently, the mainstay of treatment for milk and/or egg allergy is strict avoidance. Recently, new therapies have emerged including stepwise introduction of allergens via a ladder approach. The suitability of infants for the ladders is debated.

Because of the high dielectric strength of water, it is extremely difficult to discharge plasma in a controllable way in the aqueous phase. By using lithographically defined electrodes and metal/dielectric nanoparticles, we create electric field enhancement that enables plasma discharge in liquid electrolytes at significantly reduced applied voltages. Here, we use high voltage (10–30 kV) nanosecond pulse (20 ns) discharges to generate a transient plasma in the aqueous phase. An electrode geometry with a radius of curvature of approximately 10 μm, a gap distance of 300 μm, and an estimated field strength of 5 × 106V/cm resulted in a reduction in the plasma discharge threshold from 28 to 23 kV. A second structure had a radius of curvature of around 5 μm and a gap distance of 100 μm had an estimated field strength of 9 × 106V/cm but did not perform as well as the larger gap electrodes. Adding gold nanoparticles (20 nm diameter) in solution further reduced the threshold for plasma discharge to 17 kV due to the electric field enhancement at the water/gold interface, with an estimated E-field enhancement of 4×. Adding alumina nanoparticles decorated with Pt reduced the plasma discharge threshold to 14 kV. In this scenario, the emergence of a triple point at the juncture of alumina, Pt, and water results in the coexistence of three distinct dielectric constants at a singular location. This leads to a notable concentration of electric field, effectively aiding in the initiation of plasma discharge at a reduced voltage. To gain a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the electric field enhancement mechanism, we performed rigorous numerical simulations. These simulations provide valuable insights into the intricate interplay between the lithographically defined electrodes, the nanoparticles, and the resulting electric field distribution, enabling us to extract crucial information and optimize the design parameters for enhanced performance.
