Automatic liver tumor segmentation plays a key role in radiation therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma. In this paper, we propose a novel densely connected U-Net model with criss-cross attention (CC-DenseUNet) to segment liver tumors in computed tomography (CT) images. The dense interconnections in CC-DenseUNet ensure the maximum information flow between encoder layers when extracting intra-slice features of liver tumors. Moreover, the criss-cross attention is used in CC-DenseUNet to efficiently capture only the necessary and meaningful non-local contextual information of CT images containing liver tumors. We evaluated the proposed CC-DenseUNet on the LiTS dataset and the 3DIRCADb dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed method reaches the state-of-the-art performance for liver tumor segmentation. We further experimentally demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method on a clinical dataset comprising 20 CT volumes.

High‐performance convolutional neural networks (CNNs) stack many convolutional layers to obtain powerful feature extraction capability, which leads to huge storing and computational costs. The authors focus on lightweight models for hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, so a novel lightweight criss‐cross large kernel convolutional neural network (LiteCCLKNet) is proposed. Specifically, a lightweight module containing two 1D convolutions with self‐attention mechanisms in orthogonal directions is presented. By setting large kernels within the 1D convolutional layers, the proposed module can efficiently aggregate long‐range contextual features. In addition, the authors effectively obtain a global receptive field by stacking only two of the proposed modules. Compared with traditional lightweight CNNs, LiteCCLKNet reduces the number of parameters for easy deployment to resource‐limited platforms. Experimental results on three HSI datasets demonstrate that the proposed LiteCCLKNet outperforms the previous lightweight CNNs and has higher storage efficiency. This paper focuses on hyperspectral image classification and proposes a novel lightweight convolutional neural network called LiteCCLKNet. The model employs criss‐cross convolutions, self‐attention mechanisms, and large kernel convolutions to capture global contextual information with fewer parameters and achieve advanced performance.

Congenitally corrected transposition of great arteries is an uncommon congenital heart disease characterized by discordance at both the atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial connections. A rare subgroup of patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries also has a criss-cross heart. Contextual information is vital in visual understanding problems, such as semantic segmentation and object detection. We propose a criss-cross network (CCNet) for obtaining full-image contextual information in a very effective and efficient way. Concretely, for each pixel, a novel criss-cross attention module harvests the contextual information of all the pixels on its criss-cross path. By taking a further recurrent operation, each pixel can finally capture the full-image dependencies. Besides, a category consistent loss is proposed to enforce the criss-cross attention module to produce more discriminative features. Overall, CCNet is with the following merits: 1) GPU memory friendly. Compared with the non-local block, the proposed recurrent criss-cross attention module requires $11\times$11× less GPU memory usage. 2) High computational efficiency. The recurrent criss-cross attention significantly reduces FLOPs by about 85 percent of the non-local block. 3) The state-of-the-art performance. We conduct extensive experiments on semantic segmentation benchmarks including Cityscapes, ADE20K, human parsing benchmark LIP, instance segmentation benchmark COCO, video segmentation benchmark CamVid. In particular, our CCNet achieves the mIoU scores of 81.9, 45.76 and 55.47 percent on the Cityscapes test set, the ADE20K validation set and the LIP validation set respectively, which are the new state-of-the-art results. To enhance the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the downlink channel state information (CSI) should be compressed and fed back to the base station (BS) effectively in a frequency division duplex (FDD) mode. In contrast to traditional compression methods that rely on the particular prior assumptions, deep learning (DL) based CSI feedback has the potential to learn informatively from the hidden complex models behind the data. However, most of the current DL based methods stay in the early stage that uses DL modules directly from image processing, while the distinctive channel semantic information has been largely ignored. In this letter, considering the spatial-temporal correlation property of CSI matrices, we propose an architecture based on criss-cross attention, called CCA-Net, which extracts the channel features more precisely by leveraging the contextual information along the delay and angle domain. Meanwhile, a real and imaginary part combination module is used to assist in extracting the internal features of CSI. In addition, to reap the computational resources at BSs, a scalable decoder is designed to extend the reconstruction abilities. Experiments demonstrate that our network achieves better normalized mean square error with lower flops than existing state-of-the-art algorithms.

Study design: Surgical technical note and literature review. Objectives: To describe a technique that uses 4 rod constructs in cases of complex thoracolumbar spinal deformity correction or revision surgeries based on the hybrid use of two different types of purchase points by a staggered pedicle screw fixation. It utilizes two rods on either side of the spine using a lateral and medial entry point of pedicle screws in the vertebral body. Methods: Pedicle screws using extra-pedicular technique are more converging screws and are inserted alternately in the vertebral body and connected by rods. The left-out alternate vertebral bodies are fixed by a relatively straighter pedicle entry screw and connected to each other by a separate rod. So, two trajectories are independently used for a four-rod construct. This reconstruction has been named RCC (reinforced criss-cross construct). The screws in the index case were placed by free hand method, but we have increasingly utilized navigation guidance for placement of screws in recent times. Results: We present a surgical technical note in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV-AIDS). He was diagnosed to have multi-drug-resistant (MDR) tuberculous spondylodiscitis, complicated with Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) and implant failure resulting in kyphosis and thoracic myelopathy. RCC with pharmacological management achieved healing and union, which was maintained at 4 years follow-up. Our method of four-rod construct provides a strong and lasting construct in the management of spinal deformities and three-column osteotomies. It provides good structural support to the spine till bony union is achieved. Conclusion: Hybrid multi-rod construct like RCC provides a rigid mechanical support to the instrumentation and reduces the chances of rod failure especially in complex thoraco-lumbar spinal deformity correction surgeries.

Three-dimensional (3D) modeling has become an invaluable tool for operative planning in the continually evolving complex field of adult congenital heart surgery. We present a case of an intra-atrial conduit leak after multiple repairs of common atrium and criss-cross morphology. 3D modeling was critical in preoperative evaluation and operative planning for complicated intracardiac anatomy after an uncommon initial approach to preserve a biventricular circulation. In the setting of complex or rare congenital cardiac anomalies, advanced imaging and 3D modeling are helpful with preoperative planning.
