This article presents reminiscences of Webster K. Cole of the American Civil War. Not every Union soldier who survived the War in the eastern theater could bedazzle his grandchildren with tales of his courage at Antietam, Maryland; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania or other famous battles of the Eastern U.S. For some, duty had called in different, even mundane directions. Webster K. Cole of the 26th Michigan Infantry was one such soldier — at least for the first half of the war. After enlisting on August 10, 1862, Cole trained at Camp Jackson, Michigan, and was mustered into the 26th Michigan's Company E on September 10. Some 60 years later, Cole published a lively memoir of his war experiences — the mundane and the thrilling.
