This study aims to improve our understanding of social entrepreneurs’ careers through narrative analysis of their life stories. Narratives are an important part of the study of career-related transitions, as they form, revise, and reconstruct identities, and drive agency. For this purpose, 24 in-depth semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted with Israeli social entrepreneurs. The findings point out a process which takes place in different spheres and moulds the life story of a social entrepreneur: the personality sphere; the family sphere, including family dynamics and significant childhood experiences; the social sphere, including formative events outside the family; and the moral sphere, which includes attitudes and ideologies. The entirety of spheres generates a consistent meta-narrative which promotes a theoretical integration between psychoanalytical and existential psychological theories and offers a deeper understanding of how and why people become social entrepreneurs.

To investigate the natural history of hearing loss (HL) in Israeli military aviators and its risk factors.

A one-step sonochemical synthesis of a uniformly dispersed aqueous solution of amorphous Fe 3O 4nanoparticles capped with dl-cysteine (cys) has been achieved. During the sonication, several processes or chemical reactions occurred: the decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO) 5), the formation of amorphous Fe 3O 4nanoparticles, the capping of the Fe 3O 4with cysteine molecules, the formation of a surface chemical bond of Fe−S between Fe 3O 4particles and sulfur from cysteine, and the formation of cystine by linking two cysteine molecules. These capping cystine and cysteine molecules acted both as antioxidants and stabilizers, and the capped Fe 3O 4colloids could be stable as long as 3 months at room temperature. Usually, the size of the amorphous Fe 3O 4nanoparticles capped with Cys was found to be 20−30 nm. The products were characterized by a number of analytical techniques, such as XRD, DSC, TGA, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, Raman Spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and spot tests.

Background: Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are known to have a suboptimal immune response of both humoral and cellular arms. Recently, a BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine was introduced with a high efficacy of 95% in immunocompetent individuals. Approximately half of the patients with CLL fail to mount a humoral response to the vaccine, as detected by anti-spike antibodies. Currently, there is no data available regarding T-cell immune responses following the vaccine of these patients.

ABSTRACTThis study examines the efficacy, bacterial load, and humoral response of extensively delayed ciprofloxacin or doxycycline treatments following airway exposure of mice to Francisella tularensissubsp. holarctica(strain LVS) or to the highly virulent F. tularensissubsp. tularensis(strain SchuS4). A delay in onset of both antibiotic treatments allowed the rescue of all LVS-infected animals. However, for animals infected with SchuS4, only ciprofloxacin was efficacious and prolongation of treatment rescued all animals.

ABSTRACTMultiplexed detection technologies are becoming increasingly important given the possibility of bioterrorism attacks, for which the range of suspected pathogens can vary considerably. In this work, we describe the use of Luminex MagPlex magnetic microspheres for the construction of two multiplexed diagnostic suspension arrays, enabling antibody-based detection of bacterial pathogens and their related disease biomarkers directly from blood cultures. The first 4-plex diagnostic array enabled the detection of both anthrax and plague infections using soluble disease biomarkers, including protective antigen (PA) and anthrax capsular antigen for anthrax detection and the capsular F1 and LcrV antigens for plague detection. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged between 0.5 and 5 ng/ml for the different antigens. The second 2-plex diagnostic array facilitated the detection of Yersinia pestis(LOD of 1 × 106CFU/ml) and Francisella tularensis(LOD of 1 × 104CFU/ml) from blood cultures. Inoculated, propagated blood cultures were processed (15 to 20 min) via 2 possible methodologies (Vacutainer or a simple centrifugation step), allowing the direct detection of bacteria in each sample, and the entire assay could be performed in 90 min. While detection of bacteria and soluble markers from blood cultures using PCR Luminex suspension arrays has been widely described, to our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the utility of the Luminex system for the immunodetection of both bacteria and soluble markers directly from blood cultures. Targeting both the bacterial pathogens as well as two different disease biomarkers for each infection, we demonstrated the benefit of the multiplexed developed assays for enhanced, reliable detection. The presented arrays could easily be expanded to include antibodies for the detection of other pathogens of interest in hospitals or labs, demonstrating the applicability of this technology for the accurate detection and confirmation of a wide range of potential select agents.
