- Abstract
This is the first investigation focused on delivering multi-stream information to multiple multi-antenna users employing an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (aRIS)-assisted system. We conceive the joint design of the transmit precoders and of the aRIS’s power-amplified reconfigurable elements (APRES) to enhance the log-det rate objective functions for all users, which poses large-scale mixed discrete continuous problems. We develop a max-min log-det solver, which iterates quadratic-solvers of cubic complexity to maximize the nonsmooth function representing the minimum of the users’ log-det rate functions. To mitigate the computational burden associated with cubically escalating complexity in large-scale scenarios, we introduce a pair of alternative problems aimed at maximizing the smooth functions representing the sum of the users’ log-det rate function (sum log-det) and the soft minimum of the users’ log-det rate function (soft min log-det). We develop sum log-det and soft max-min solvers, leveraging closed-form expressions of scalable (linear) complexity for efficient computation. This approach ensures practicality in addressing large-scale scenarios. Furthermore, the soft min log-det enables us to enhance the log-det rates for all users and their sum, ultimately improving the quality of delivering multi-user multi-stream information.

- Abstract
The implicitly restarted Arnoldi method (IRAM), which relies on Krylov subspace iteration, is an effective approach for extracting desired partial eigenpairs in characteristic mode analysis (CMA). The primary limitation of IRAM is that the matrix–vector products (MVPs) of a dense matrix and its inverse need to be performed at each iteration step. This communication develops an efficient method to break through this limitation by incorporating a data-sparse matrix algorithm into the IRAM. The proposed method accelerates the MVP of a dense matrix in a data-sparse way and provides a data-sparse formatted lower-upper (LU) triangular decomposition algorithm to deal with the MVP of the inverse of a dense matrix. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

- Abstract
KM2A is one of the main sub-arrays of LHAASO, working on gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics at energies above 10 TeV. Detector simulation is the important foundation for estimating detector performance and data analysis. It is a big challenge to simulate the KM2A detector in the framework of Geant4 due to the need to track numerous photons from a large number of detector units (>6000) with large altitude difference (30 m) and huge coverage (1.3 km2). In this paper, the design of the KM2A simulation code G4KM2A based on Geant4 is introduced. The process of G4KM2A is optimized mainly in memory consumption to avoid memory overflow. Some simplifications are used to significantly speed up the execution of G4KM2A. The running time is reduced by at least 30 times compared to full detector simulation. The particle distributions and the core/angle resolution comparison between simulation and experimental data of the full KM2A array are also presented, which show good agreement.

- Abstract
The China initiative accelerate driven system (CiADS) is dedicated to the safe disposal of long-lived nuclear waste. It consists of a superconducting linac, a subcritical fast neutron reactor system, a high-power heavy metal spallation target, and other auxiliary devices. To constrain and regulate the beam, three superconducting magnet structures are applied to the linac superconducting portion. They are made up of two solenoids, two horizontal steering dipole coils, two vertical steering dipole coils, and two shielding coils with varying axial lengths. In OPERA-Quench, a three-dimensional quench simulation of the magnet is performed, and the hot-spot temperature and terminal voltage in the quench process are presented. The stored energy of the superconducting magnet increases as the axis length increases, and so does the hot-spot temperature and terminal voltage. The maximum stored energy of the superconducting magnet is 27.19 kJ, corresponding to a hot-spot temperature of 70.9 K and a peak terminal voltage of 422 V, all of which are within safe limits. The experiment is performed with the protection circuit, the hot-spot temperature is calculated from the test data, the current and voltage are also compared to the simulation results, and the difference between simulation and experiment data is evaluated and analyzed. Finally, in order to avoid excessive liquid helium consumption in the cryostat, as much magnet energy is expended on the discharge resistor as feasible. The differences between various dump resistors and varistor are compared. The energy absorbed by the varistor are better than resistors.

- Abstract
Sodium–glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce progression of chronic kidney disease and the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in a wide range of patients. However, their effects on kidney disease progression in some patients with chronic kidney disease are unclear because few clinical kidney outcomes occurred among such patients in the completed trials. In particular, some guidelines stratify their level of recommendation about who should be treated with SGLT2 inhibitors based on diabetes status and albuminuria. We aimed to assess the effects of empagliflozin on progression of chronic kidney disease both overall and among specific types of participants in the EMPA-KIDNEY trial.

- Abstract
Background: Liquid Argon (LAr) is used as a target material in several current and planned experiments related to dark matter direct searching and neutrino detection. Argon provides excellent pulse shape discrimination (PSD) capability, which could separate the electron recoil backgrounds from the expected nuclear recoil signals. As the next-generation photosensors, silicon photon multiplier (SiPM) is expected to replace traditional photon multiplier tubes. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to compare the PSD capability of a LAr detector between using SiPMs as photosensors and using PMTs as photosensors. Methods: The PSD capability of a LAr detector is determined through the prompt fraction method, which relies on the analysis of output pulses. These pulses are generated using Monte Carlo simulation, incorporating real single photoelectron pulses obtained from a PMT or a SiPM. Results: Three kinds of SiPMs and one kind of PMT have been used to compare the PSD capability of a LAr detector. The use of J-60035 SiPM results in a better PSD capability compared to the use of PMT as a photosensor, while using the other two kinds of SiPM deteriorates the PSD capability. Conclusion: SiPM is a promising photosensor candidate for a LAr detector. The better energy resolution could help to improve its PSD capability, while the higher probabilities of cross-talk and after-pulse degrade its PSD capability. Notably, after-pulse has a more significant impact compared to cross-talk because after-pulse influences the energy distribution within the time window, while cross-talk primarily affects the energy resolution of the detector.

- Abstract
For tungsten fiber-reinforced tungsten matrix (Wf/W) composites, the interfacial microstructure is essential for the improvement of mechanical properties. The Y2O3coating deposited on the W fiber has been applied to modify the interface between the W matrix and W fiber. However, the Y2O3coating on the W fiber is usually fractured and dispersed into the W matrix as large particles after sintering. In this study, the microstructure of the Y2O3coating on the W fiber in Wf/W composites was studied. And the failure mechanism of Y2O3interface during field assisted sintering was investigated through finite element analysis (FEA). The reasons for the fracture of the Y2O3interface can be attributed to the transformation of the Y2O3coating from cubic to face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure, the large lattice misfit of 49.0% at the interface, the large difference of the elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient between W and FCC-Y2O3. In order to avoid the fracture of Y2O3interface during sintering, the finite element analysis was used to modify the processing parameters of Wf/W composites, including the sintering temperature, pressure, particle size of W powder and thickness of the Y2O3coating. And the simulation results were consistent with the experimental results.

- Abstract
The growing prominence of social media use among teenagers has prompted researchers in psychology and communication science to consider connections between social media activities and youths’ development and well-being. This systematic, narrative review evaluated associations between social media use and the internalizing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness among 12–18-year-olds, based on 68 qualifying empirical studies conducted between 2000 and 2017. For each symptom, analyses assessed the theoretical underpinnings of studies; the strength, direction, and consistency of associations with social media use; and factors mediating or moderating these associations. Investigators often reported positive associations between social media use and internalizing symptoms, but more nuanced studies pointed to individual, contextual, or media-based factors qualifying these direct effects. Future research would benefit from more theory-driven approaches, consistent measurements of key constructs, and a combination of longitudinal and experimental designs to identify causal associations. Integrating concepts from developmental psychology, clinical psychology, and communication science would aid in understanding the seemingly complex relationships between social media use and adolescents’ internalizing symptoms.

- Abstract
Purpose: Thyroid cancer has an overwhelming incidence in the population. Thus, there is an urgent need to understand the underlying mechanism of its occurrence and development, which may provide new insights into therapeutic strategies. The role and mechanism of TFCP2L1 in regulating the progression of thyroid cancer remains unclear. Methods: Public databases and clinical samples were used to detect the expression of TFCP2L1 in cancer and non-cancer tissues. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to compare the differences in survival probability of the TFCP2L1 highly expressing group and the TFCP2L1 lowly expressing group. Functional assays were used to evaluate the biological effect of TFCP2L1 on thyroid cancer cells. RNA sequencing and enrichment analyses were used to find out pathways that were activated or inactivated by TFCP2L1. Results: We demonstrated that TFCP2L1 was significantly downregulated in thyroid cancer. Decreased expression of TFCP2L1 was associated with malignant clinicopathological characteristics. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses indicated that thyroid tumor patients with low TFCP2L1 expression presented shorter disease-free interval and progression-free interval. Additionally, TFCP2L1 expression was positively correlated with thyroid differentiation degree. Overexpression of TFCP2L1 in thyroid cancer cells inhibited cell growth and motility in vitro, and tumorigenicity and metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, the NF-κB signaling pathway was found inactivated by overexpressing TFCP2L1. Conclusion: Our results suggest that TFCP2L1 is a tumor suppressor and potential differentiation regulator, and might be a potential therapeutic target in thyroid cancer.

- Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify and characterize immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)-associated pituitary adverse events (AEs). Methods: This is a retrospective disproportionality study based on VigiBase, the World Health Organization (WHO) global database of individual case safety reports (ICSRs), with a study period from January 1, 2011 to March 6, 2019. Information component (IC) and reporting odds ratio (ROR) are measures of disproportionate analysis. IC was used to evaluate the association between ICIs and pituitary AEs, while ROR was used to evaluate the differences in reporting of pituitary AEs between different ICI subgroups. Results: The following ICI-associated pituitary diseases have been increasingly reported: hypophysitis (835 reports; information component 6.74 [95% CI 6.63–6.83]), hypopituitarism (268; 6.12 [95% CI 5.92–6.27]), pituitary enlargement (28; 5.19 [95% CI 4.57–5.63]). The anti-CTLA-4 subgroup had a stronger association with hypophysitis/hypopituitarism than the anti-PD (anti-PD-1 or anti-PD-L1) subgroup (ROR 8.0 [95% CI 6.7–9.6]). Among ICI-associated hypophysitis/hypopituitarism cases, the proportion of male was higher than female (630 [63.9%] vs 356 [36.1%]). Anti-CTLA-4 subgroup and ICI combination (nivolumab plus ipilimumab) subgroup both had a significantly earlier onset time than anti-PD subgroup (67 days [IQR 48–87]; 90 [IQR 34–155]; 140 [IQR 62–218], both p< 0.05). Other endocrinopathies that co-occurred with hypophysitis/hypopituitarism were adrenal insufficiency, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus. Gastrointestinal disorder was the most common concurrent disease except for endocrinopathies. Conclusions: ICI-associated pituitary adverse events have significantly increased, and their clinical characteristics should be kept in mind by oncologists and endocrinologists who manage patients treated by immunotherapy.

- Abstract
Steel structures are widely used; however, their traditional design method is a trial-and-error procedure which is neither efficient nor cost effective. Therefore, a multi-population particle swarm optimization (MPPSO) algorithm is developed to optimize the weight of steel frames according to standard design codes. Modifications are made to improve the algorithm performances including the constraint-based strategy, piecewise mean learning strategy and multi-population cooperative strategy. The proposed method is tested against the representative frame taken from American standards and against other steel frames matching Chinese design codes. The related parameter influences on optimization results are discussed. For the representative frame, MPPSO can achieve greater efficiency through reduction of the number of analyses by more than 65% and can obtain frame with the weight for at least 2.4% lighter. A similar trend can also be observed in cases subjected to Chinese design codes. In addition, a migration interval of 1 and the number of populations as 5 are recommended to obtain better MPPSO results. The purpose of the study is to propose a method with high efficiency and robustness that is not confined to structural scales and design codes. It aims to provide a reference for automatic structural optimization design problems even with dimensional complexity. The proposed method can be easily generalized to the optimization problem of other structural systems.

- Abstract
Purpose: Both glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucagon (GCG) belong to the incretin family. This study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of DR10601, a fully recombinant hybrid peptide with dual GLP-1/GCG receptor agonistic activity. Methods: The agonistic ability of DR10601 was indirectly assessed by inducing cAMP accumulation in Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with GLP-1R or GCGR in vitro. Following s.c. administration, the plasma pharmacokinetics of DR10601 were analysed in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The antiobesity effects and improved glycaemic control of DR10601 in vivo were evaluated by administering DR10601 to high-fat DIO mice and ICR mice as a single dose or repeated s.c. doses once every 4 days for 24 days. Results: DR10601 exhibits dual agonistic activity on GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. The plasma half-life of DR10601 in Sprague-Dawley rats following s.c. administration was 51.9 ± 12.2 h. In an IPGTT, a single s.c. dose of DR10601 (30 nmol/kg) produced similar glycaemic control effects and a longer duration of action compared to dulaglutide (10 nmol/kg). Compared with that achieved with liraglutide (40 nmol/kg) s.c. administered daily, DR10601 administered s.c. once every 4 days at 90 nmol/kg exerted a nearly equivalent effect on food intake and significantly reduced the body weights of high-fat DIO mice at 24 days. Conclusions: Repeated administration of DR1060 provides potent and sustained glycemic control and body weight loss effect in high-fat DIO mice. DR10601 is a promising long-acting agent deserving further investigation for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

- Abstract
Purpose: Living with type 1 diabetes requires burdensome and complex daily diabetes self-management behaviors. This study aimed to determine the association between integrated behavior performance and HbA1c, while identifying the behavior with the most significant impact on HbA1c. Methods: A simple and feasible questionnaire was used to collect diabetes self-management behavior in patients with type 1 diabetes (n = 904). We assessed six dimensions of behavior performance: continuous glucose monitor (CGM) usage, frequent glucose testing, insulin pump usage, carbohydrate counting application, adjustment of insulin doses, and usage of apps for diabetes management. We evaluated the association between these behaviors and HbA1c. Results: In total, 21.3% of patients performed none of the allotted behavior, while 28.5% of patients had a total behavior score of 3 or more. 63.6% of patients with a behavior score ≥ 3 achieved HbA1c goal, contrasting with only 30.4% of patients with a behavior score of 0–1. There was a mean 0.54% ± 0.05% decrease in HbA1c for each 1-unit increase in total behavior score after adjustment for age, family education and diabetes duration. Each behavior was independently correlated with a lower HbA1c level, with CGM having the most significant effect on HbA1c levels. Conclusions: Six optimal self-management behaviors, especially CGM usage, were associated with improved glycemic control, emphasizing the feasibility of implementing a simplified version of DSMES in the routine clinical care.

- Abstract
Transcriptomics analyses play pivotal roles in understanding the complex regulatory networks that govern cellular processes. The abundance of rRNAs, which account for 80%–90% of total RNA in eukaryotes, limits the detection and investigation of other transcripts. While mRNAs and long noncoding RNAs have poly(A) tails that are often used for positive selection, investigations of poly(A)−RNAs, such as circular RNAs, histone mRNAs, and small RNAs, typically require the removal of the abundant rRNAs for enrichment. Current approaches to deplete rRNAs for downstream molecular biology investigations are hampered by restrictive RNA input masses and high costs. To address these challenges, we developed rRNA Removal by RNaseH (rRRR), a method to efficiently deplete rRNAs from a wide range of human, mouse, and rat RNA inputs and of varying qualities at a cost 10- to 20-fold cheaper than other approaches. We used probe-based hybridization and enzymatic digestion to selectively target and remove rRNA molecules while preserving the integrity of non-rRNA transcripts. Comparison of rRRR to two commercially available approaches showed similar rRNA depletion efficiencies and comparable off-target effects. Our developed method provides researchers with a valuable tool for investigating gene expression and regulatory mechanisms across a wide range of biological systems at an affordable price that increases the accessibility for researchers to enter the field, ultimately advancing our understanding of cellular processes.

23. A Structure-Inspired Disturbance Observer for Finite-Dimensional Mechanical Systems

- Abstract
This article describes a disturbance observer (DO) design for systems whose dynamics are piecewise differentiable and satisfy certain structural conditions. Provided a Lipschitz continuity condition holds with a sufficiently small Lipschitz constant—a condition that is implied by “sufficiently slow” dynamics—the observer ensures local ultimate boundedness of the disturbance estimate error, which converges exponentially to a positively invariant set whose size can be made arbitrarily small. This observer is appropriate for finite-dimensional mechanical systems. We demonstrate the design in two examples—a tutorial example of a nonlinear mass-damper-spring system and a practical example of an experimental underwater vehicle.

• A gradient structure TiAl alloys was manufactured by additive manufacturing. • The room-temperature compressive strength of gradient TiAl alloys is 2.6 GPa. • The compressive strength is 1.28 GPa at 750 °C. • The strengthening effect is attributed to more intersection slips. Gradient structure is emerging as an effective strategy to fabricate metals with remarkable mechanical performance, but have not been verified in intermetallic compounds for high-temperature applications. Through experiments and atomic simulations, we show that a typical intermetallic TiAl alloy with gradient structure has a significant strengthening effect both at room temperature and high temperatures. The room-temperature compressive strength of TiAl alloys with gradient grain obtained by additive manufacturing is 2.57 GPa, which is ∼2.7 times as strong as that with equiaxed grain. The strengthening effect is attributed to more sessile dislocations in gradient structure caused by the intersections of multiple slip systems in gradient grain. More importantly, the strengthening effect is still effective at high temperatures and the compressive strength is 1.28 GPa at 750 °C. The simulation results show that this strengthening effect is due to the increased Hirth dislocation at high temperatures. This study expands the applications of TiAl alloys for load-bearing structures and provides a new strategy for improving the strength of intermetallic compounds at both room temperature and high temperatures. - Abstract
An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Before fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error-mitigation strategies were necessary to continue this growth. Here, we validate recently introduced error-mitigation strategies that exploit the expectation that the ideal output of a quantum algorithm would be a pure state. We consider the task of simulating electron systems in the seniority-zero subspace where all electrons are paired with their opposite spin. This affords a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model. We compare the performance of error mitigations on the basis of doubling quantum resources in time or in space on up to 20 qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques such as postselection. We study how the gain from error mitigation scales with the system size and observe a polynomial suppression of error with increased resources. Extrapolation of our results indicates that substantial hardware improvements will be required for classically intractable variational chemistry simulations.

- Abstract
Purpose: Thyroid cell lines are useful tools to study the physiology and pathology of the thyroid, however, they do not produce or secrete hormones in vitro. On the other hand, the detection of endogenous thyroid hormones in primary thyrocytes was often hindered by the dedifferentiation of thyrocytes ex vivo and the presence of large amounts of exogenous hormones in the culture medium. This study aimed to create a culture system that could maintain the function of thyrocytes to produce and secrete thyroid hormones in vitro. Methods: We established a Transwell culture system of primary human thyrocytes. Thyrocytes were seeded on a porous membrane in the inner chamber of the Transwell with top and bottom surfaces exposed to different culture components, mimicking the ‘lumen-capillary’ structure of the thyroid follicle. Moreover, to eliminate exogenous thyroid hormones from the culture medium, two alternatives were tried: a culture recipe using hormone-reduced serum and a serum-free culture recipe. Results: The results showed that primary human thyrocytes expressed thyroid-specific genes at higher levels in the Transwell system than in the monolayer culture. Hormones were detected in the Transwell system even in the absence of serum. The age of the donor was negatively related to the hormone production of thyrocytes in vitro. Intriguingly, primary human thyrocytes cultured without serum secreted higher levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3) than free thyroxine (FT4). Conclusion: This study confirmed that primary human thyrocytes could maintain the function of hormone production and secretion in the Transwell system, thus providing a useful tool to study thyroid function in vitro.

- Abstract
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a common disease with substantial heritability. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association meta-analysis from 14 discovery cohorts and uncovered 141 independent associations, including 97 previously unreported loci. A polygenic risk score derived from meta-analysis explained AAA risk beyond clinical risk factors. Genes at AAA risk loci indicate involvement of lipid metabolism, vascular development and remodeling, extracellular matrix dysregulation and inflammation as key mechanisms in AAA pathogenesis. These genes also indicate overlap between the development of AAA and other monogenic aortopathies, particularly via transforming growth factor β signaling. Motivated by the strong evidence for the role of lipid metabolism in AAA, we used Mendelian randomization to establish the central role of nonhigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol in AAA and identified the opportunity for repurposing of proprotein convertase, subtilisin/kexin-type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors. This was supported by a study demonstrating that PCSK9loss of function prevented the development of AAA in a preclinical mouse model.

- Abstract
In order to effectively improve the efficiency of automatic detection and subsequent processing of welding defects in the construction field, this paper proposes a method for detecting and locating weld surface defects based on machine vision and laser vision. YOLOv5 is used for the initial detection and identification of weld hole defects to obtain the approximate location of the defect. Subsequently, the detailed features of the defect sites are extracted by scanning the approximate range of defect locations with a line laser 3D sensor based on the identification of weld defect holes. Finally, the defect location and depth are accurately located based on the extracted features. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of identifying weld surface hole defects with an accuracy rate of over 94%. Furthermore, the combination of the system with the line laser 3D sensor detection can significantly improve the accuracy compared to pure 2D visual inspection, while the manual measurement is neither convenient nor accurate. This indicates that the proposed system can be used for rapid and accurate feature information extraction of weld hole defects, making subsequent remedial welding in actual engineering more automatic and efficient.

- Abstract
Purpose: Both cardiovascular disease and periodontitis are complications of diabetes that have a great impact on human life and health. Our previous research found that artesunate can effectively improve cardiovascular disease in diabetes and has an inhibitory effect on periodontal disease. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the potential therapeutic possibility of artesunate in the protection against cardiovascular complications in periodontitis with type I diabetes rats and to elucidate the possible underlying mechanisms. Methods: Sprague‒Dawley rats were randomly divided into the healthy, diabetic, periodontitis, diabetic with periodontitis, and artesunate treatment groups (10, 30, and 60 mg/kg, i.g.). After artesunate treatment, oral swabs were collected and used to determine changes in the oral flora. Micro-CT was performed to observe changes in alveolar bone. Blood samples were processed to measure various parameters, while cardiovascular tissues were evaluated by haematoxylin–eosin, Masson, Sirius red, and TUNEL staining to observe fibrosis and apoptosis. The protein and mRNA expression levels in the alveolar bone and cardiovascular tissues were detected using immunohistochemistry and RT‒PCR. Results: Diabetic rats with periodontitis and cardiovascular complications maintained heart and body weight but exhibited reduced blood glucose levels, and they were able to regulate blood lipid indicators at normal levels after artesunate treatment. The staining assays suggested that treatment with 60 mg/kg artesunate has a significant therapeutic effect on myocardial apoptotic fibrosis. The high expression of NF-κB, TLR4, VEGF, ICAM-1, p38 MAPK, TGF-β, Smad2, and MMP9 in the alveolar bone and cardiovascular tissue in the type I diabetes and type I diabetes with periodontitis rat models was reduced after treatment with artesunate in a concentration-dependent manner. Micro-CT showed that treatment with 60 mg/kg artesunate effectively alleviated alveolar bone resorption and density reduction. The sequencing results suggested that each model group of rats had vascular and oral flora dysbiosis, but artesunate treatment could correct the dysbacteriosis. Conclusions: Periodontitis-related pathogenic bacteria cause dysbiosis of the oral and intravascular flora in type I diabetes and aggravate cardiovascular complications. The mechanism by which periodontitis aggravates cardiovascular complications involves the NF-κB pathway, which induces myocardial apoptosis, fibrosis, and vascular inflammation.

- Abstract
Although the concept of the Luttinger liquid (LL) describing a one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermion system1,2collapses at higher dimensions, it has been proposed to be relevant to enigmatic problems in condensed matter physics including the normal state of cuprate superconductors3–5, unconventional metals6,7and quantum criticality8,9. Here we investigate the electronic structure of quasi-2D η-Mo4O11, a charge-density wave material, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We show a prototypical LL behaviour originating from the crossed quasi-1D chain arrays hidden in the quasi-2D crystal structure. Our results suggest that η-Mo4O11materializes the crossed LL phase10–12in its normal state, where the orthogonal orbital components substantially reduce the coupling between intersecting quasi-1D chains and therefore maintain the essential properties of the LL. Our finding not only presents a realization of a 2D LL, but also provides a new angle to understand non-Fermi liquid behaviour in other 2D and 3D quantum materials.

- Abstract
Purpose: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic—caused by a new type of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)—has posed severe impacts on public health worldwide and has resulted in a total of > 6 million deaths. Notably, male patients developed more complications and had mortality rates ~ 77% higher than those of female patients. The extensive expression of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor and related proteins in the male reproductive tract and the association of serum testosterone levels with viral entry and infection have brought attention to COVID-19’s effects on male fertility. Methods: The peer-reviewed articles and reviews were obtained by searching for the keywords SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, endocrine, spermatogenesis, epididymis, prostate, and vaccine in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar from 2020–2022. Results: This review summarizes the effects of COVID-19 on the male reproductive system and investigates the impact of various types of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines on male reproductive health. We also present the underlying mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 affects male reproduction and discuss the potentially harmful effects of asymptomatic infections, as well as the long-term impact of COVID-19 on male reproductive health. Conclusion: COVID-19 disrupted the HPG axis, which had negative impacts on spermatogenesis and the epididymis, albeit further investigations need to be performed. The development of vaccines against various SARS-CoV-2 variations is important to lower infection rates and long-term COVID risks.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThrips (Order Thysanoptera) species are agriculturally important pests and vectors of plant disease. These tiny insects are commonly found in all life stages on imported commodities at the New Zealand border. Morphological identification of thrips is able to be performed on adults, but the identification keys for immature stages are inadequate and so DNA barcoding is regularly used for their identification. Here, we have generated cytochrome oxidase I (COI) DNA barcode data for 29 thrips species from 124 individuals, focusing on Frankliniella occidentalis,a dominant species intercepted at New Zealand border, followed by F. panamensis, Thrips palmiand T. tabaci. In addition, a multiplex real-time PCR assay has been developed to target the four thrips species. This assay is intended to facilitate the identification of quarantine interceptions with greater accuracy and faster diagnostic turnaround times, regardless of the developmental stages of the thrips. The developed assay demonstrated a high level of specificity for all the four target species and could detect as few as 10 copies/µL of the target DNA. Linear responses and high correlation coefficients between the amount of DNA and Cqvalues for each species were also achieved. The method was successfully tested on single egg, larva and adult samples and proved to be applicable for all life stages of the four species. Overall, this study has shown that the developed assay is an effective biosecurity tool for rapid and reliable identification of the target thrips species.

- Abstract
The electrostatic discharge robustness of silicon carbide (SiC) power metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are investigated by the transmission line pulse (TLP) method. The degradation behavior of key electrical parameters of the device under repetitive TLP stress is investigated. A decrease in threshold voltage, an increase in gate leakage current, and the degradation of gate capacitance parameters are observed compared with the prestress values. Low-frequency noise (LFN) test results show that after multiple TLP stress cycles, the typical leakage current noise of the device increases by approximately one order of magnitude compared to prestress, which means that the trap density extracted based on the McWhorter model increases by one order of magnitude after 1000 TLP stress pulses. Furthermore, sources of defects in the gate oxide dielectric of the devices after stresses are analyzed. The physical mechanism of the changes of SiC MOSFETs characteristics could be attributed to the hole trapping by oxygen vacancy defects and single carbon interstitial in the oxide layer after TLP stresses, which induces an electrostatic effect and results in the changes in the electrical properties of the devices. The results may be useful in the design and application of SiC power MOSFETs.

- Abstract
Purpose: Prepubescent body fat percentage (BFP) is associated with puberty onset; however, the association between the timing of puberty onset and BFP remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether and how the timing of puberty onset is associated with various anthropometric measures, and to investigate the critical time period of the BFP transition before and after puberty. Methods: The Taiwan Pubertal Longitudinal Study (TPLS) has a multicenter, population-based prospective cohort and was established in July 2018 at 4 pediatric departments. We included girls aged 6–14 years and boys aged 9–17 years evaluated as having puberty onset and excluded those with precocious puberty diagnosis. The anthropometric measures were collected every 3 months. The main outcome was age at puberty onset. Data were analyzed between July 2018 and September 2020. Results: For 153 girls and 83 boys, BFP was significantly related to puberty onset for girls. Longitudinal analysis revealed that BFP in the girls was reduced to less than 18% 6 months before puberty and rapidly increased by 2.85% over 3 months, then exceeding 20% before puberty onset. After puberty onset, BFP was no longer lower than 22%. Conclusions: BFP is an essential predictor of age at puberty onset. BFP first decreases and then begins to increase 3–6 months before puberty in girls. Parents and schools could monitor the BFP of prepubescent girls every 6 months to predict puberty onset.

- Abstract
Mass spectrometry (MS) has become an indispensable tool for metabolomics studies. However, due to the lack of applicable experimental platforms, suitable algorithm, software, and quantitative analyses of cell heterogeneity and subpopulations, investigating global metabolomics profiling at the single cell level remains challenging. We combined the Single-probe single cell MS (SCMS) experimental technique with a bioinformatics software package, SinCHet-MS (Single Cell Heterogeneity for Mass Spectrometry), to characterize changes of tumor heterogeneity, quantify cell subpopulations, and prioritize the metabolite biomarkers of each subpopulation. As proof of principle studies, two melanoma cancer cell lines, the primary (WM115; with a lower drug resistance) and the metastatic (WM266-4; with a higher drug resistance), were used as models. Our results indicate that after the treatment of the anticancer drug vemurafenib, a new subpopulation emerged in WM115 cells, while the proportion of the existing subpopulations was changed in the WM266-4 cells. In addition, metabolites for each subpopulation can be prioritized. Combining the SCMS experimental technique with a bioinformatics tool, our label-free approach can be applied to quantitatively study cell heterogeneity, prioritize markers for further investigation, and improve the understanding of cell metabolism in human diseases and response to therapy.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the modifiable predictors of T2DM and the roles of insulin resistance (IR) and β-cell function over a 6-year study and 30-year follow-up. Methods: A total of 462 non-diabetic participants, 282 with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and 180 with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) were enrolled in this analysis. The Matsuda IR index and area under the curve of insulin-to-glucose ratio (AUCI/G-R) were used as IR and β-cell function indices in the analysis. Results: In all participants, multivariable analysis showed that BMI, glucose status, Matsuda IR index and systolic blood pressure (SBP) at baseline were independently associated with an increased risk of T2DM over 30 years, whereas lifestyle intervention and AUCI/G-R were inversely associated with this risk. The predictive effect of the Matsuda IR index and AUCI/G-R in participants with IGT was consistent with the results of all participants, whereas in those with NGT, only the Matsuda IR index, not the AUCI/G-R, predicted the development of T2DM (HR = 1.42, 95% CI 1.07–1.89 vs HR = 1.09, 95% CI 0.76–1.56). The predictive effect of the Matsuda IR index on T2DM existed even in participants with BMI < 25 (p= 0.049). Conclusion: The modifiable predictors of T2DM in Chinese adults were high BMI, hypertension, mild hyperglycaemia, IR, and β-cell dysfunction. Both IR and β-cell function contributed to the development of T2DM in the long term; however, IR remains the initial and long-standing key risk factor for T2DM.

- Abstract
Computing demands for large scientific experiments, such as the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, will increase dramatically in the next decades. To complement the future performance increases of software running on central processing units (CPUs), explorations of coprocessor usage in data processing hold great potential and interest. Coprocessors are a class of computer processors that supplement CPUs, often improving the execution of certain functions due to architectural design choices. We explore the approach of Services for Optimized Network Inference on Coprocessors (SONIC) and study the deployment of this as-a-service approach in large-scale data processing. In the studies, we take a data processing workflow of the CMS experiment and run the main workflow on CPUs, while offloading several machine learning (ML) inference tasks onto either remote or local coprocessors, specifically graphics processing units (GPUs). With experiments performed at Google Cloud, the Purdue Tier-2 computing center, and combinations of the two, we demonstrate the acceleration of these ML algorithms individually on coprocessors and the corresponding throughput improvement for the entire workflow. This approach can be easily generalized to different types of coprocessors and deployed on local CPUs without decreasing the throughput performance. We emphasize that the SONIC approach enables high coprocessor usage and enables the portability to run workflows on different types of coprocessors.
