Previous work has proposed climatic cooling and atmosphere–ocean oxygenation as potential triggers for the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, with the suggestion of better oxygenated oceans during the Middle to Late Ordovician. However, recent studies have argued for spatial and temporal heterogeneity in marine redox state on several continents. Here we investigate a black-shale succession accumulated within the Tarim Platform via a combination of geochemical proxies to address these debates. Negative shifts in bulk nitrogen isotopes and synchronous increases in excess phosphorus suggest moderate-high marine primary production coinciding with the development of bottom-water anoxia, as indicated by enrichments in highly reactive iron and modest concentrations of redox-sensitive trace metals (Mo, U). Moreover, the occurrence of black shale correlates well with equivalent successions formed in deep-water marginal basins along several continents, including South China, North China, Laurentia and Baltica. This may suggest an expansion of marine anoxia in low-latitude zones of the late Darriwilian to early Sandbian oceans, probably as a result of enhanced upwelling in sync with climatic cooling. The extent and ultimate cause of marine anoxia requires further quantifying constraints at a global scale, which will enable potential links between global oceanic redox conditions and concurrent biotic changes to be evaluated in more detail. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD), nanofluidic flow dynamics and heat transfer as well as thermodynamic irreversibility, within a novel butterfly-shaped cavity. Gaining a thorough understanding of these phenomena will help to facilitate the design and optimization of thermal systems with complex geometries under magnetic fields in diverse applications. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the objective, the finite element method is used to solve the governing equations of the problem. The effects of various controlling parameters such as butterfly-shaped triangle vertex angle (T), Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha) and magnetic field inclination angle (γ) on the hydrothermal performance are analyzed meticulously. By investigating the effects of these parameters, the authors contribute to the existing knowledge by shedding light on their influence on heat and fluid transport within butterfly-shaped cavities. Findings: The major findings of this study reveal that the geometrical shape significantly alters fluid motion, heat transfer and irreversibility production. Maximum heat transfer, as well as entropy generation, occurs when the Rayleigh number reaches its maximum, the Hartmann number is minimized and the angle of the magnetic field is set to 30° or 150°, while the butterfly wings angle or vertex angle is kept at a maximum of 120°. The intensity of the magnetic field significantly controls the heat flow dynamics, with higher magnetic field strength causing a reduction in the flow strength as well as heat transfer. This configuration optimizes the heat transfer characteristics in the system. Research limitations/implications: Further research can be expanded on this study by examining thermal performance under different curvature effects, orientations, boundary conditions and additional factors. This can be accomplished through numerical simulations or experimental investigations under various multiphysical scenarios. Practical implications: The geometric configurations explored in this research have practical applications in various engineering fields, including heat exchangers, crystallization processes, microelectronic devices, energy storage systems, mixing processes, food processing, air-conditioning, filtration and more. Originality/value: This study brings value by exploring a novel geometric configuration comprising the nanofluidic flow, and MHD effect, providing insights and potential innovations in the field of thermal fluid dynamics. Argentina's refusal to join the BRICS, in the context of its membership expansion, approved at the 15th summit at South Africa, is an indication of the difficult times faced by South American regionalism. Argentina's foreign policy is geared to a 100 percent pro-Western orientation, that which implies immediate cooling off relations with China and the Global South. This article presents three-dimensional simulations of the cooling system of a plate lithium-ion battery (BTY) using the finite element method (FEM). Since weight is of particular importance in the aerospace industry, this type of batteries can be used. The cooling system consists of two enclosures containing phase change material (PCM) on both sides of the BTY cell and alumina/water nanofluid flows in a tube in the middle of the PCM. This simulation is performed using the two-phase model. By changing the nanofluid velocity (VNF) from 10 to 30 mm/s and changing the location of the tube in the PCM enclosure, the temperature contours of the BTY, PCM, and tube, as well as the contours of PCM melting and volume fraction (VFN) of molten PCM are provided. According to the findings, increasing the VNF from 10 to 30 mm/s decreases the average temperature of the BTY (TBT) by 14.8% and the VFN of molten PCM by 18.9% in 1200 s. Also, when the tube distance is 8 mm, the TBT is minimal and the amount of solid PCM is maximal. When the tube distance is 11 mm, the TBT is maximal and the VFN of solid PCM is minimal. • Cyclic deep cryogenic treatment was utilized to homogenize the residual stress and tune the microstructure of a high entropy alloy fabricated by laser melting deposition, in order to improve its overall mechanical properties. • Cyclic deep cryogenic treatment can induce an increased compressive residual stress and introduce various types of reinforcing defect microstructures into a high entropy alloy, including dense dislocations, intersecting twins, transformed HCP phase and nanograins, thus effectively overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off. • Compared to single-step DCT, cyclic DCT can reduce the residual stress gradients in the LMD-built sample, relieving or removing the tensile residual stress at the top surface. • Transformation to HCP phase can occur during the cyclic DCT process due to the cyclic reverting of the thermal stress to a high level on each cryogenic cooling, which promotes twinning on secondary habit planes and more frequent faulting. Additively manufactured (AM) metallic materials commonly possess substantial tensile surface residual stress, which is detrimental to the load-bearing service behavior. Recently, we demonstrated that deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) is an effective method for improving the tensile properties of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) samples fabricated by laser melting deposition (LMD), by introducing high compressive residual stress and deformation microstructures without destroying the AM shape. However, carrying out the DCT in a single-step mode does not improve the residual stress gradients inherent from the LMD process, which are undesirable as the mechanical properties will not be homogeneous within the sample. In this work, we show that carrying out the DCT in a cyclic mode with repeated cryogenic cooling and reheating can significantly homogenize the residual stress in LMD-fabricated CoCrFeMnNi HEA, and improve tensile strength and ductility, compared with single-step DCT of the same cryogenic soaking duration. Under cyclic DCT, the thermal stress is re-elevated to a high value at each cryogenic cooling step, leading to the formation of denser and more intersecting reinforcing crystalline defects and hcp phase transformation, compared to single-step DCT of the same total cryogenic soaking duration in which the thermal stress relaxes towards a low value over time. The enhancement of defect formation in the cyclic mode of DCT also leads to more uniform residual stress distribution in the sample after the DCT. The results here provide important insights on optimizing DCT processes for post-fabrication improvement of mechanical properties of AM metallic net shapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Endwall film cooling protects vane endwall by coolant coverage, especially at the leading edge (LE) region and vane-pressure side (PS) junction region. Strong flow impingement and complex vortexaa structures on the vane endwall cause difficulties for coolant flows to cover properly. This work aims at a full-scale arrangement of film cooling holes on the endwall which improves coolant efficiency in the LE region and vane-PS junction region. Design/methodology/approach: The endwall film holes are grouped in four-holes constructal patterns. Three ways of arranging the groups are studied: based on the pressure field, the streamlines or the heat transfer field. The computational analysis is done with the k-ω SST model after validating the turbulence model properly. Findings: By clustering the film cooling holes in four-holes patterns, the ejection of the coolant flow is stronger. The four-holes constructal patterns also improve the local coolant coverage in the "tough" regions, such as the junction region of the PS and the endwall. The arrangement based on streamlines distribution can effectively improve the coolant coverage and the arrangement based on the heat transfer distribution (HTD) has benefits by reducing high-temperature regions on the endwall. Originality/value: A full-scale endwall film cooling design is presented considering interactions of different film cooling holes. A comprehensive model validation and mesh independence study are provided. The cooling holes pattern on the endwall is designed as four-holes constructal patterns combined with several arrangement choices, i.e. by pressure, by heat transfer and by streamline distributions.
