MOTIVATION research (Marketing) ,BUSINESS literature ,ECONOMIC man ,CLASS analysis ,ADVERTISING & psychology ,SOCIOECONOMICS ,PERSONALITY & occupation - Abstract
What is popularly referred to as "consumer motivation" has been getting more and more attention in recent years. Research in this area promises to be an important milestone in the history of marketing. Despite the interest in the subject and its potential importance, however, information necessary for understanding it has not been easy to obtain. This difficulty has been due in large measure to the varied and sometimes complicated nature of the work, and the fact that much of it has been done on a private basis. Also, the field is very young; it has little literature of its own, and no integrated rationale has crystallized. The author is currently investigating this subject. While his field work is in its early stages, certain observations are made here in an effort to invite thought, and suggestions are given for the businessman who wishes to learn more by reading. MARXIAN economics ,FRIENDSHIP ,CLASS analysis - Abstract
The Marxist critic, as appears in the pages of the newspaper "New Masses," is an extremely complicated animal. Though he has cut himself off from the bourgeois critics, a number of vestigial traces of the bourgeois intellectual life still cling to him. Moreover, he has not abjured the literary back-scratching which goes on in high-powered capitalist literary circles. A somewhat sordid series of incidents which recently stained the fair face of the New It asses indicates quite clearly that personal friendship can still play a part in the literary judgments of the proletarian critic.

COMMUNISM ,SOCIALISM ,MARXIAN school of sociology ,LAW & socialism ,CLASS analysis ,ECONOMIC history - Abstract
The article puts forward the analysis of Marxism and other closely related political and economic doctrines right from Revisionist controversy of the 1890s. The article presents the clarification that there are in the world today three main kinds of Marxist theory and practice. There is the Social Democratic variant, upheld by a number of Marxist parties, chiefly in Western Europe. The adherents of this school cling to a general framework of Marxist terminology and doctrine, and continue to teach Marxist economics, including the theory of surplus value, the assertion of the class struggle as the main factor in historical development, and the materialist conception of history that affirms the predictability of the future.

CLASS analysis , *MARXIST philosophy , *LIBERALS - Abstract
The article focuses on the class analysis of Karl Marx. According to libertarian historian Ralph Raico, Marx has derived class analysis from the classical liberals and inverted it from its original purpose in which left-liberals have turned the anti-statist, anti-taxation and anti-monopoly thrust of the analysis on its head. Meanwhile, modern libertarians have attempted to regain the original vision of the analysis such as economist and historian Murray N. Rothbard.

Abstract: Longitudinal or otherwise correlated categorical variables are typically related to some covariates and exhibit nonignorable correlations of the observed variables. A further complication often consists in missing entries. For analyzing such data, it is proposed to create an extra missing category and to employ latent class analysis which, regarding missing data, can be shown to belong to the family of nonmissing at random models. By treating the complete and the incomplete cases jointly, it becomes possible to estimate the parameters of interest along with additional parameters characterizing the missing mechanism. Data from the Muscatine Coronary Risk Factor Study, where each child was classified obese or not obese at three occasions, serve as an illustrative example. Previous analyses resulted in significant interaction of age and sex for the complete data , and in a linear increase in the logit of the rate of obesity over time for the incomplete data, with no effect of the covariate sex . Reanalyses employing latent class models do not support these findings. The finally accepted two-classes model for the complete data assumes a linear effect of age which is the same for boys and girls. The incomplete data were considered three-categorical (not obese, obese, missing) and resulted in a more complex model only in part supporting the linear age hypothesis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article evaluates the thesis of sociologist Carl C. Taylor concerning the history of farmers' revolution in the U.S. Taylor has noted that farmer revolts have been the triggering factor that have caused the occurrence of farmers' movement. He examines the impact of abeyance processes and class character on agrarian mobilizations. Farmers' movement, which relates to labor movement, has remained to be one of the continuous fight of the laborers against capitalism. Such analogy between the farmers' movement and labor movement has helped in assessing the class character of agrarian social movements of the country.

RACE awareness ,SOCIAL status ,PRIVILEGE (Social sciences) ,RESENTMENT ,CLASS analysis ,SOCIAL science research - Abstract
The very claim of a group that it is inherently superior suggests that it is not, for that is the claim all other groups make. The factors, which result in this phenomenon, may be divided into those which are immediate and capricious, and those that are derived and rationalized. When groups have lived together a long tine there is an accepted status, while it is accepted no progress is made in separating fact from myth. The result of domination is a difference in status of the racial groups. Tip to the last century such differences have been accepted as in the order of nature, but recently there has been a whirlwind growth of resentment on the part of those who have an inferior status. This applies to races, women, nations, and unprivileged classes.

SOCIAL structure ,CLASS analysis ,FASCISTS ,FASCISM ,SOCIALISTS ,SOCIAL classes - Abstract
This article presents information on the books written on masses and social class." The author Emil Lederer's book "State of the Masses," posthumously published analyses the "mass state" which is something of a recantation of his Marxist faith. Though Lederer, who was the dean of the faculty of the "University in Exile," was never a proponent of dictatorship and always belonged to the democratic and liberal wing of Socialist thought, he feels compelled in this book to disavow his previous faith in a "classless society." He is driven to this recantation by his observation of the nature and the fruits of the fascist state. The significance of fascism for him lies in the fact that "for the first time in history mankind must witness not the domination but the destruction of society, the pulverization of all groups, the melting together of all various layers of society into crowds, and the transformation of these crowds into one social institution.

The article looks at the influence that parent's social class and careers can have on the academic achievement of their children. In spite of the government's efforts to make Great Britain a classless meritocratic society, the Sutton Trust found that social mobility is static. Socioeconomic factors still influence a child's place in British society. Smart children born to poor families are being outpaced by their wealthier, less intelligent peers as can be seen from test scores.

EDITORIALS ,CLASS differences ,CLASS analysis ,SOCIAL classes ,EDUCATIONAL sociology ,DOMESTIC violence - Abstract
This article reports on a series of editorials published in the "New York Times," regarding the subject of class differences. The editorials contend that although our society is a meritocracy, parents with money, education and connections cultivate in their children the habits that the meritocracy rewards. This article reports on some statistics that the "New York Times" failed to mention. Men and women who have not completed high school are three times as likely as those who have been to college to be killed while in a motor vehicle. Data from the latest (1999-2000) National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey tell us that women with less than a high school education are 26% more likely to be obese than those with a college degree. A survey article in the Journal of the American Medical Women's Association reports that income is inversely related to prevalence of domestic violence.
