This article provides an overview and evaluation of a diabetes prevention and awareness campaign. The purpose of this project was to involve students and faculty across multiple disciplines in order to develop public service announcements (PSAs) targeting young adults aged 18-24. These PSAs were designed to promote diabetes prevention activities among African American college students. To this end, we assembled a 7-member team (3 faculty and 4 students) that included two Health Education faculty, one Communication Arts faculty, three Health Education majors, and one Communication Arts major to create the JCSU Diabetes Prevention and Awareness Campaign, 'Get the Picture'. The plan included development of two video PSAs (60-second and 30-second), a 30-second audio PSA, a campaign brochure, and campaign website. We then evaluated the impact of the brochure and 60-second PSA on students in terms of design and content, value affirmation, scope, and intended behavior changes. Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. Anemia, a well-defined risk factor for cardiovascular disease, has been shown to contribute to the development of angina pectoris, ischemic events, and left ventricular hypertrophy. Data indicate that these cardiovascular-related disorders are often ameliorated or reversed in patients who maintain hemoglobin (Hb) levels in the 11 to 12 g/dL range recommended by NKF-KDOQI. Conversely, Hb levels below 11 g/dL result in an increase in cardiovascular disorders and a 2.9-fold increased risk of death. Purpose: To examine the short-term impact of a personalized environmental report-back intervention to reduce home exposure to tobacco smoke and radon on perception of synergistic risk for lung cancer. Radon-induced lung cancer is more common among those exposed to tobacco smoke.Design: Randomized controlled trial.Setting: Primary care clinics and a pharmacy waiting area at a University Medical Center in the Southeastern United States and community events.Participants: Five hundred sixty adult homeowners and renters (3-month follow-up, n = 334).Intervention: Personalized environmental report back.Measures: Single-item synergistic risk perception measure using 5-point Likert-type scale.Analysis: Change in synergistic risk from baseline to 3 months was evaluated using a generalized estimating equation model containing main effects of treatment group and time. Covariates in the model included age, gender, education, and home smoking status.Results: For treatment and control groups combined, there was a significant increase in perception of synergistic risk from baseline to 3 months, but the study groups did not differ. There was no association between perceived synergistic risk and whether or not there were smokers at home.Conclusion: Learning about combined risks for lung cancer, with or without dual home screening for secondhand smoke and radon and environmental report-back, may enhance perceived risk for combined environmental exposures. Evaluation of perceived synergistic risk with a single item is a study limitation.

Today's college students occupy a 'window' between older adults, whose need for hepatitis B vaccination is minimal, and younger people who receive the vaccine as part of their childhood immunization series. However, because of the high-risk activities that are often part of student behavior, college students are among the individuals who are at the highest risk for this disease; 075% of all reported hepatitis B cases occur in persons between the ages of 15 and 39 years. It is therefore imperative that college health professionals take seriously their responsibility to educate students about issues related to hepatitis B and make available programs that enable the students to receive immunizations. This article briefly describes a successful hepatitis B education and immunization program at an institution that has no mandatory prematriculation immunization requirements. Purpose. To examine frequency, prominence, and content of local print media after a 4-year policy advocacy intervention.Design. This was a controlled community-based trial.Setting. The study took place in 39 rural counties (22 intervention, 17 comparison).Subjects. Subjects consisted of 2525 newspaper articles monitored over 18 quarters (July 2007 to December 2011).Intervention. One key element of the tailored policy advocacy intervention delivered by community advisors was building demand for smoke-free policy via media advocacy strategies.Measures. Media clips were coded to assess number of articles; percent of tobacco-related articles on the front page or bold heading section; percent of pro-health articles; and percent of articles with secondhand smoke (SHS)–relevant topics or themes.Analysis. Coded data were entered into Atlas.ti software. Article frequencies and attributes were compared between groups and over time using negative binomial regression for longitudinal data, with county-level demographics as covariates.Results. In the last 3 years, there were approximately twice as many articles in intervention than in comparison counties. Media clips from newspapers in intervention counties were between 1.4 and 2 times more likely to have front page placement and percent of relevant topic or theme than were those in comparison counties. There was no difference in rate of pro-health articles by group.Conclusion. The policy advocacy intervention to promote smoke-free policy increased media attention to SHS and may have increased public awareness of issues related to smoke-free policy.

The article discusses research which was conducted to perform a baseline analysis of wellness at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Researchers evaluated 2,339 individuals at the university, including full and part time faculty, university staff and students, with a software package by MicroFit called HealthWizard, which captured and analyzed information on health history, wellness profile and fitness profile. They found that the over all campus wellness score was 58 out of a possible 100 and that most participants needed improvements in the areas of fitness and nutrition.

Little is known about the most effective strategies to motivate rural smokers to quit. This article describes the personal narratives of current and former smokers living in an economically distressed, rural area of Appalachian Kentucky. Three categories emerged: personal motivators to quit smoking, external influences, pride of place. Capturing personal narratives represents an evidence-based, data-rich strategy for development of culturally sensitive, population-based interventions for rural smokers. Such strategies may be effective in reaching rural smokers and motivating them to quit, thereby reducing tobacco-related disease and premature death in rural, economically distressed communities.

Despite a strong stance by the American College Health Association and years of prevention and control efforts on US college campuses, smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke remain a problem among college students. This article provides an overview of what is known about cigarette smoking in this population as well as existing interventions for smoking prevention, cessation, and exposure to secondhand smoke on college campuses. Strategies to reduce tobacco use are presented, many of which have been demonstrated to be effective in the short-term.

Isomeric peptide analyses are an analytical challenge of great importance to therapeutic monoclonal antibody and other biotherapeutic product development workflows. Aspartic acid (Asp, D) to isoaspartic acid (isoAsp, isoD) isomerization is a critical quality attribute (CQA) that requires careful control, monitoring, and quantitation during the drug discovery and production processes. While the formation of isoAsp has been implicated in a variety of disease states such as autoimmune diseases and several types of cancer, it is also understood that the formation of isoAsp results in a structural change impacting efficacy, potency, and immunogenic properties, all of which are undesirable. Currently, lengthy ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) separations are coupled with MS for CQA analyses; however, these measurements often take over an hour and drastically limit analysis throughput. In this manuscript, drift tube ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry (DTIMS–MS) and both a standard and high-resolution demultiplexing approach were utilized to study eight isomeric Asp and isoAsp peptide pairs. While the limited resolving power associated with the standard DTIMS analysis only separated three of the eight pairs, the application of HRdm distinguished seven of the eight and was only unable to separate DL and isoDL. The rapid high-throughput HRdm DTIMS–MS method was also interfaced with both flow injection and an automated solid phase extraction system to present the first application of HRdm for isoAsp and Asp assessment and demonstrate screening capabilities for isomeric peptides in complex samples, resulting in a workflow highly suitable for biopharmaceutical research needs.

We describe a protocol for the localization of specific messenger RNAs in Xenopus laevisembryo tissue sections using a nonradioactive detection method. After fixation, embryos are embedded in paraffin wax, sectioned, mounted on slides, and subjected to a series of prehybridization treatments which improve the accessibility of the probe to the target mRNA and reduce nonspecific binding. These treatments are followed by hybridization in situwith single-stranded antisense RNA probe generated by in vitrotranscription and labeled with digoxigenin. The hybridization products are detected with preabsorbed alkaline phosphatase-coupled digoxigenin antibody and subsequently localized using a chromogenic substrate that generates a colored precipitate at the hybridization site. The nonradioactive in situhybridization method we describe is reproducible and has a detection sensitivity akin to those methods that use antisense RNA probes labeled with radioisotopes; however, it is faster, safer, and easier to perform. Sectioning of prestained whole-mount X. laevisembryos does not always show the complete expression pattern of many genes, particularly those in deep endodermal structures, due to inadequate probe penetration. Therefore thorough analysis of gene expression patterns often requires in situhybridization on presectioned material whereby probe has equal accessibility to all tissue.

InXenopus, XHexandcerberusare early marker genes of the anterior endomesoderm (AE), a subset of endoderm cells fated to form the liver and foregut and implicated in head induction. UsingXHexandcerberusas markers we have examined the signals underlying AE induction. We show that the AE is specified by the early blastula in the absence of mesodermal signals but that cell–cell contact between presumptive AE cells is required. In overexpression experiments maternal Wnt/β-catenin and TGF-β signals (Vg1, Xnr1–2) can induce ectopicXHexandcerberus.Inhibiting these pathways with dominant interfering signalling components blocks endogenousXHexandcerberusexpression. We assess the role of signals from the organiser and show that the BMP antagonists noggin and chordin are important for maintainingXHexandcerberusexpression. Finally, ventral injection ofXHexmRNA can induce ectopiccerberus.Our results indicate that endodermal and mesodermal patterning are closely coordinated and that the AE is likely to be specified by the combined action of dorsal Wnt/β-catenin signals and endoderm-specific factors mediated by TGF-β signalling. These results provide a starting point for understanding the molecular events underlying the progressive determination of endodermally derived organs, such as the liver and foregut.

An investigation is made of the wavenumber selection of baroclinic disturbances in the rotating, differentially heated annulus flow system with a three-dimensional fully nonlinear high resolution model. Along the constant thermal contrast of 10°C that traverses the nondimensional parameter space defined by the laboratory experiments of Pfeffer et al. (1980b), a series of numerical experiments with a quiescent-start initial condition is conducted to explore the equilibrated flow regimes as a function of the rotation rate of the annulus.

There were 40 consecutive patients with recurrent or multiple superficial stage Ta or T1 transitional cell cancer assigned randomly to receive prophylactic thiotepa or mitomycin C intravesical chemotherapy. Patients received 8 weekly instillations followed by 22 monthly treatments of either 60mg. thiotepa or 40mg. mitomycin C. Of 25 patients randomized to receive mitomycin C 4 had recurrence in a total of 337 patient-months (1.19 per 100 patient-months), while disease recurred in 1 of 15 patients randomized to receive thiotepa who were followed for a total of 220 patient-months (0.45 per 100 patient-months). No significant difference in recurrrence rate was noted for either drug group (p equals 0.18). Toxicity requiring cessation of therapy was observed in 7 patients (28 per cent) on mitomycin C and none on thiotepa.
