We study responses of thermally annealed ultrathin films deposited on silicon substrates and containing polyzwitterions to applied electric fields by using specular neutron reflectometry (NR). In particular, we applied 7 kV under vacuum at 150 °C on the films containing poly(1-(3-sulfonatopropyl)-2-vinylpyridinium) (P2VPPS) and its blends with either a deuterated ionic liquid (EMIMBF4-d11), potassium bromide (KBr), or deuterated sodium polystyrenesulfonate (NaPSS-d7). The voltage was applied over an air gap, and the in situneutron reflectivity measurements allowed us to measure changes in the films. In all the cases, we measured decreases in thicknesses of the films, which varied up to ∼8% depending on the added salt. PosterioriX-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements on the same films at room temperature reveal that these films were highly hygroscopic, which led to the presence of water in these films. Analysis of the NR and the XRR revealed that the decrease in the thickness of the films in the neutron reflectivity experiments on heating resulted from the loss of water and the ionic liquid but not from electrostrictive effects. The in situNR and posterioriXRR experiments revealed not only the hygroscopic nature of these films but also depth-resolved structural rearrangements due to the applied electric fields in the films containing electrolytes and polyelectrolytes. This work shows that a combination of NR and XRR can be used to distinguish between mass loss and electrostriction in films containing charged polymers such as polyzwitterions.

A convenient method for the synthesis of perdeuterated alkyl amides/amines is disclosed. Perdeuterated acetyl amides can be achieved by a hydrogen–deuterium (H/D) exchange protocol with Pt/C as a catalyst and D2O as a deuterium source under mild conditions. After removal or reduction of the acetyl group, this protocol can provide perdeuterated primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, which are difficult to achieve via other methods.

A strategy that enables the facile synthesis of bottlebrush block copolymers with flexible backbones was developed. A demonstration of the strategy’s utility was carried out by grafting end-functionalized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) to the dually reactive block copolymer, poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-block-poly(vinyldimethylazlactone) (PGMA-b-PVDMA). Five different bottlebrush diblock copolymers were investigated by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray scattering methods, atomic force microscopy (AFM), rheology and computational simulations using molecular dynamics (MD), and self-consistent field theory (SCFT). A relationship between the glass transition temperature and the fraction of chain ends was demonstrated by DSC and highlights the potential of this synthetic method to tailor polymer properties. All five samples were found to be in a disordered phase exhibiting multiscale structures revealed by two broad peaks in small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) that can be attributed to graft-to-graft and backbone-to-backbone density correlations using MD simulations. The SCFT-based simulations justify the observation of a disordered phase due to its stabilization by the grafts. This modular approach can be easily extended to other grafts, including responsive, conducting, and charged polymers with the prerequisite end groups. The versatility and ease of assembling these functional bottlebrushes constitute a powerful “toolbox” method for the rapid and scalable synthesis of novel bottlebrush block copolymers with desired properties.

We investigated the temperature-dependent structural evolution of thermoreversible triblock terpolypeptoid hydrogels, namely poly(N-allyl glycine)-b-poly(N-methyl glycine)-b-poly(N-decyl glycine) (AMD), using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast matching in conjunction with X-ray scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) techniques. At room temperature, A100M101D10triblock terpolypeptoids self-assemble into core–corona-type spherical micelles in aqueous solution. Upon heating above the critical gelation temperature (Tgel), SANS analysis revealed the formation of a two-compartment hydrogel network comprising distinct micellar cores composed of dehydrated A blocks and hydrophobic D blocks. At T≳ Tgel, the temperature-dependent dehydration of A block further leads to the gradual rearrangement of both A and D domains, forming well-ordered micellar network at higher temperatures. For AMD polymers with either longer D block or shorter A block, such as A101M111D21and A43M92D9, elongated nonspherical micelles with a crystalline D core were observed at T< Tgel. Although these enlarged crystalline micelles still undergo a sharp sol-to-gel transition upon heating, the higher aggregation number of chains results in the immediate association of the micelles into ordered aggregates at the initial stage, followed by a disruption of the spatial ordering as the temperature further increases. On the other hand, fiber-like structures were also observed for AMD with longer A block, such as A153M127D10, due to the crystallization of A domains. This also influences the assembly pathway of the two-compartment network. Our findings emphasize the critical impact of initial micellar morphology on the structural evolution of AMD hydrogels during the sol-to-gel transition, providing valuable insights for the rational design of thermoresponsive hydrogels with tunable network structures at the nanometer scale.

Spherical carbon particles are versatile products that are of interest in polymer modification and scaffolding, catalysis, and energy storage applications. Despite various complex synthesis methods available currently, there is a need for simplified synthesis techniques to develop spherical carbon particles from sustainable feedstock. Here, we report a simple method for manufacturing micronized carbon particles from lignin, a plant biomass derived phenolic oligomer. By careful selection of a good, high boiling solvent that can fully solvate and stabilize lignin, we were able to create spherical free-flowing carbon particles from lignin by a simple solvothermal process and subsequent carbonization. During solvothermal reaction, lignin degrades into fragments via its thermally sensitive bonds. Simultaneously, the residual lignin and its fragments repolymerize, condense into highly cross-linked structures, and eventually precipitate out of solution with a spherical shape. Infrared and NMR spectroscopy data in combination with the rheological properties of thermally condensed, solvated oligomer elucidate evolution in the chemical architecture of lignin. The coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations revealed the growth of spherical char from lignin in a good solvent through intermolecular condensation. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy data show the morphology of the carbonized product—an increase in the carbonization temperature enhances the structural order.

The intramolecular catalyst transfer over sterically hindered arenes in Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction was investigated by the reaction of ortho‐substituted dibromoarenes with equimolar ortho‐substituted phenylboronic acid in the presence of NHC based PEPPSI‐IPr as catalyst. The diarylarene species of the form Ar’−Ar−Ar’ were observed as major product, which suggested the intramolecular transfer of Pd(0) over sterically hindered arenes proceeded smoothly in Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction. Furthermore, our studies also demonstrated that intramolecular catalyst transfer could be a useful tool to improve the polymerization efficiency, especially in the synthesis of ortho‐linked polyarenes. The intramolecular transferof regenerated Pd(0) in Suzuki cross‐coupling reaction with a series of sterically hindered dibromoarenes and aryl boronic acids has been disclosed, which may shed light on syntheses of well‐defined sterically hindered conjugated polymers and precursors for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Selective deuteration is an important tool for many analytical techniques including neutron scattering and spectroscopies. However, the availability of deuterated materials is limited because of the challenges in their synthesis. Here, we report the synthesis of partially and fully deuterated ε-caprolactone monomers and their corresponding polymers, poly(ε-caprolactone)s (PCLs), and the investigation of isotope effects on their crystalline structures and physical properties. Deuteration of PCLs leads to smaller crystal lattices and volumes compared to protiated PCLs by the amount proportional to the deuteration levels. The linear trend suggests that the volume isotope effect in PCL is primarily governed by the vibrations of C–D and C–H bonds. The large intrachain contraction of deuterated PCLs compared to that of polyethylene reported in the literature can be ascribed to the presence of polar ester groups in PCLs. Deuterated PCLs also display lower melting temperatures than protiated PCLs proportional to their deuteration levels because of weaker intermolecular interactions in deuterated polymers. FTIR spectroscopy, with support from density functional theory calculations, shows large red shifts of the stretching and bending frequencies of C–D versus C–H bonds as dictated by their relative reduced masses 13/7, and to a smaller degree for the C═O stretching frequency. This work is among the very few studies comparing the effects of partial versus full deuteration on the structures and properties in semicrystalline polymers. These results not only advance our understanding of isotope effects in polymeric materials but also provide an important avenue to design polymers with desirable properties.

An in situ electrochemical small-angle neutron scattering (eSANS) method was developed to measure simultaneously the redox properties and size, shape and interactions of solution-dispersed nanomaterials. By combining multi-step potentials and chronocoulometry readout with SANS, the structure and redox properties of engineered nanomaterials are followed in one experiment. Specifically, ZnO nanoparticles were examined as dilute dispersions in pH buffered deuterium oxide solutions under negative electrode potentials. The ZnO disk-shaped nanoparticles undergo an irreversible size transformation upon reduction at the vitreous carbon electrode. The decrease in average nanoparticle size near a current maximum shows the reduction reaction from ZnO to Zn occurs. The eSANS method provides nanometer scale sensitivity to nanoparticle size and shape changes due to an electrochemical reaction that is crucial to understand in energy, healthcare, and other applications.

A convenient and economical method for converting propiolic acid to sodium acrylate‐d3is described. Successive D/H exchange of the alkyne proton of sodium propiolate (prepared from propiolic acid) using D2O affords sodium propiolate‐dhaving up to 99 at.% D. Sodium propiolate‐dcan be partially reduced to sodium acrylate‐d3with 90% conversion and 89% yield using D2and the Lindlar catalyst, with control of reaction parameters to maximize conversion while minimizing over‐reduction. Hydrogen bonding in crystalline N,N′‐dialkylthioureas was examined with the help of single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, DFT calculations, and Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) analysis. A CSD survey indicated that unlike the related urea derivatives, which persistently self‐assemble into one‐dimensional hydrogen‐bonded chains, the analogous thioureas can form two different hydrogen‐bonding motifs in the solid state: chains, structurally similar with those found in ureas, and dimers, that further associate into hydrogen‐bonded layers. The formation of one motif or another can be manipulated by the bulkiness of the organic substituents on the thiourea group, which provides a clear example of steric control over the hydrogen bonding arrangement in crystalline organic solids.

Creating small-molecule antivirals specific for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) proteins is crucial to battle coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) is an established drug target for the design of protease inhibitors. We performed a structure–activity relationship (SAR) study of noncovalent compounds that bind in the enzyme’s substrate-binding subsites S1 and S2, revealing structural, electronic, and electrostatic determinants of these sites. The study was guided by the X-ray/neutron structure of Mprocomplexed with Mcule-5948770040 (compound 1), in which protonation states were directly visualized. Virtual reality-assisted structure analysis and small-molecule building were employed to generate analogues of 1. In vitroenzyme inhibition assays and room-temperature X-ray structures demonstrated the effect of chemical modifications on Mproinhibition, showing that (1) maintaining correct geometry of an inhibitor’s P1 group is essential to preserve the hydrogen bond with the protonated His163; (2) a positively charged linker is preferred; and (3) subsite S2 prefers nonbulky modestly electronegative groups.
