Using high quality VLA observations, we detected for the first time spatially resolved oscillations in the microwave total intensity (I) and circular polarization (V) emission of a sunspot–associated gyroresonance  source. Oscillations were detected at 8.5 and 5 GHz during several time intervals of our 10–hour–long dataset. The oscillations are intermittent: they start suddenly and are damped somehow more gradually. Despite their transient nature when they are observed they show significant positional, amplitude and phase stability. The spatial distribution of intensity variations is patchy and the location of the patches of strong oscillatory power is not the same at both frequencies. The strongest oscillations are associated with a small region where the 8.5 GHz emission comes from the second harmonic of the gyrofrequency while distinct peaks of weaker oscillatory power appear close to the outer boundaries of the 8.5 and 5 GHz g–r sources, where the emissions come from the third harmonic of the gyrofrequency. Overall, the 5 GHz oscillations are weaker than the 8.5 GHz oscillations (the rms amplitudes of the Ioscillations are 1.3–2.5 $\times 10^4$K and 0.2–1.5 $\times 10^5$K, respectively). At both frequencies the oscillations have periods in the three–minute range: the power spectra show two prominent peaks at 6.25–6.45 mHz and 4.49–5.47 mHz. Our models show that the microwave oscillations are caused by variations of the location of the third and/or second harmonic surfaces with respect to the base of the chromosphere–corona transition region (TR), i.e. either the magnetic field strength or/and the height of the base of the TR oscillates. The best–fit model to the observed microwave oscillations can be derived from photospheric magnetic field strength oscillations with an rms amplitude of 40 G or oscillations of the height of the base of the TR with an rms amplitude of 25 km. Furthermore, small variations of the orientation of the magnetic field vector yield radio oscillations consistent with the observed oscillations.

An analysis of the local sources (LS) structure of the S-component of solar radio emission confirms the presence of a core component which is characterized by strong circular polarization and a steep growing spectrum at shorter centimeter wavelengths. These details coincide in position with the sunspots' umbra and their height above the photosphere does not generally exceed about 2000 km. Gyroresonance emission of thermal electrons of the corona is generally accepted as being responsible for this type of emission. The spectral and polarization observations of LS made with RATAN-600 using high resolution in the wavelength range 2.0–4.0 cm, allow us to measure the maximum magnetic fields of the corresponding sunspots at the height of the chromosphere-corona transition region (CCTR). This method is based on determining the short wavelength limit of gyroresonance emission of the LS and relating it to the third harmonic of gyrofrequency.

Simultaneous observations made at several wavelengths in microwave range using the high spatial resolution of radiotelescope RATAN-600 make it possible to develop methods of measuring the magnetic fields in the solar corona and the chromosphere. In this paper we develop a method of measuring the magnetic fields from thermal bremsstrahlung and demonstrate it, using observations of a flocculus (plage) during August 1–3, 1977. The observations show that the flocculus under investigation possessed bipolar magnetic structure with peak to peak amplitude of magnetic field strength of about 40 G at the level of the upper chromosphere and the transition region (with a r.m.s. error of 5.7 G for favourable conditions). The radio astronomical map of the magnetic field is in agreement with the Mt. Wilson magnetic field map to within the experimental error. It follows that the average longitudinal magnetic field above the flocculus does not drop significantly with height above the photosphere up to the CCTR (chromosphere-corona transition region). An analysis of the spectra of polarized radio emission also gives an opportunity to determine the temperature gradient in the CCTR (which proved to amount to about 1000 K km-1 and to follow their variation with height.

Solar radio and microwave sources were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the RATAN-600, providing high spatial resolution at 91 cm (VLA) and detailed spectral and polarization data at microwave wavelengths (1.7 to 20 cm - RATAN). The radio observations have been compared with images from the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) aboard theYohkoh satellite and with full-disk phoptospheric magnetic field data from the Kislovodsk Station of the Pulkovo Observatory. The VLA observations at 91 cm show fluctuating nonthermal noise storm sources in the middle corona. The active regions that were responsible for the noise storms generally had weaker microwave emission, fainter thermal soft X-ray emission, as well as less intense coronal magnetic fields than those associated with other active regions on the solar disk. The noise storms did, however, originate in active regions whose magnetic fields and radiation properties were evolving on timescales of days or less. We interpret these noise storms in terms of accelerated particles trapped in radiation belts above or near active regions, forming a decimetric coronal halo. The particles trapped in the radiation belts may be the source of other forms of nonthermal radio emission, while also providing a reservoir from which energetic particles may drain down into lower-lying magnetic structures.

We present a discussion of the gradual burst event on May 13,1985 which is based on observations of the RATAN-600 telescope at ten fixed frequencies in the range between 37.5 and 0.95 GHz (0.8 and 31.6 cm wavelength) and on time profiles of patrol observations of the Observatory for Solar Radio Astronomy at Tremsdorf near Potsdam. This up to now most complete data set allows new conclusions on the extended spectral/spatial structure of the source region.

This paper presents a short summary of observations of coronal structures at microwaves using an instrument with high spatial resolution and good wavelength coverage. The comparison of the RATAN-600 data with optical observations of coronal loops in the green line and with the Very Large Array maps at 21 cm has shown that the loops represent only a small part of coronal matter, although their role may be of great importance in the physics of the solar corona. Prominence (filament) associated sources, especially ”peculiar” ones, are also reviewed.

We present multi-frequency observations and model computations of the microwave emission of a solar active region. The radio observations were obtained with the RATAN-600 at several wavelengths between 0.8 and 31.6 cm and with the VLA at 6 and 20 cm. The active region was also observed in the EUV O Iv lines by the HRTS instrument aboard the Space Shuttle Spacelab-2 mission. These lines are formed in the chromosphere-corona transition region and their intensity ratio is sensitive to pressure. Photospheric magnetograms provided both the longitudinal and the transverse component of the magnetic field. The microwave observations were checked against model computations taking into account both the free-free and the gyro-resonance emission mechanisms and using the pressure data from the O IV lines. The magnetic field was computed through constant-a force-free extrapolations of the longitudinal photospheric field. We computed both the flux from 2 to 20 cm and the spatial structure of the microwave emission at 6 and 20 cm. The comparison of the computed and observed flux spectra allowed us to estimate the magnetic field strength at the base of the transition region and in the low corona, as well as the values of the conductive flux and the height of the base of the transition region. The model maps at 6 cm and 20 cm showed that a was not constant above the active region; the same conclusion was reached on the basis of the photospheric observations. The use of pressure measurements allowed us to identify microwave structures which were determined by pressure enhancements. At 6 cm the computations confirmed the fact that the magnetic field is the principal factor that determines the structure of sunspot-associated sources and showed that the effect of pressure variations was small. Pressure variations were more important at 20 cm, where the peak of the emission was associated with the sunspot and a diffuse component was associated with the plage which had an average pressure higher by a factor of 1.54 than the sunspot.

We present two-dimensional solar maps at 2.7, 3.2, 4, and 8.2 cm computed from one-dimensional observations with the RATAN-600, using Earth rotation aperture synthesis techniques. Before the calculation of maps, the position of each scan was corrected with respect to the center of the solar disk and the scans were calibrated. The circular polarization scans were corrected for polarization cross-talk between the I and V channels. Subsequently, the quiet-Sun background emission was subtracted. After all corrections, a dirty map was computed by combining the scans at different position angles. The last step of the processing was an attempt to free the dirty map of the sidelobes, using the standard CLEAN procedure. The resolution of the clean maps at 2.7 cm was 0.5' by 6'. Both active regions which were present on the solar disk were mapped. We studied the flux spectra of different types of sources: one was associated with a sunspot, the second was located over the neutral line of an active region, and the other was associated with the plage. The emission mechanism of the former was attributed to the gyroresonance process, while the short wavelength emission of the others was attributed to the free-free process. For the sunspot-associated source we estimated the magnetic field strengths at the base of the transition region and in the low corona.

The Very Large Array (VLA) and the RATAN 600 were used to observe a solar active region on two consecutive days around the time of a partial solar eclipse in July 1990. VLA synthesis maps at 2.0, 3.5, and 6.2 cm wavelength reveal bright (Tb = 0.2 - 2.2 × 106 K), compact (? = 10?–40?) sources above the penumbra of the leading sunspot while maps at 20 cm wavelength reveal an extended (? ˜ 4.5') looplike structure (Tb ˜ 106 K) between the dominant spots. Total flux and brightness temperature spectra of both components were obtained by the RATAN at nine wavelengths between 1.7 and 21 cm. The relatively-flat spectrum of the extended emission is attributed to the optically thin thermal brems Strahlung of electrons trapped in a magnetic loop at coronal temperatures. Step-spectrum sunspot-associated emission is attributed to thermal gyroresonance radiation at different heights along the leg of a loop joining regions of opposite magnetic polarity. Comparisons with predicted distributions of gyroresonance radiation indicate that the compact sunspot-associated sources lie at heights of h = 2500–17500 km above the photosphere. Although potential fields of sufficient strength appear to exist at coronal heights, differences n the observed and predicted brightness distributions suggest some role for non-potential fields or for an inhomogeneous distribution of electron density or temperature above the sunspot.

A sample of 36 S-component sources observed by the radio telescope RATAN-600 was compared with calculations of gyromagnetic emission and bremsstrahlung based on recent sunspot models. The diagnostic possibilities of the spectral distributions in the radio flux, the degree of polarization, and the source sizes for the estimation of magnetic scale heights and other source parameters were checked by different methods.

Recently recognized solar millimetre-wave off-limb sources are interpreted as a special phenomenon of long-duration post- and inter-flare emission at coronal altitudes. We present, for the first time, information about the brightness and polarization spectrum in the centimetre range for one such event of September 22, 1980 by means of RATAN-600 observations.
