- Abstract
Stadiums and arenas are places where games are played, events are held, and celebrations are conducted. However, for those with disabilities, accesses has, in the past, often been unavailable because of a facility's unaccommodating physical characteristics. This paper reports the findings from postoccupancy evaluations (POEs), designed to cover the specifications related to seating, conducted at ten sports facilities in major urban areas throughout the United States. The POEs were undertaken to facilitate recommendations to the Access Board for changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines regarding assembly seating. The focus of the study was on the range of issues related to accessible seating, and five issues clearly stood out: (1) the number and size of wheelchair spaces; (2) space for companion seating; (3) the dispersal of accessible seating; (4) the integration of accessible seating; and (5) any sightlines over standing spectators. The paper focuses on these five issues.
