Abstract: An estimate of water levels due to the interaction of tide and surge associated with a storm including air bubble effects is made along the coastal region of Bangladesh. For this purpose, a vertically integrated shallow water model in Cartesian coordinate system is developed introducing air bubbles and is solved using nested finite difference schemes. A fine grid model covering the region between 21°15′N to 23°N and 89°E to 92° E has been nested into a coarse grid model covering the region between 15°N to 23°N and 85°E to 95°E in the Bay of Bengal to incorporate all the major islands and coastal bending accurately. By applying tidal forcing through the southern open boundary of the coarse grid model appropriate tidal conditions are generated in the problem domain. Numerical experiments are performed with the help of the model to simulate water levels due to tide and surge interaction including air bubble effects associated with the tropical storm of April 1991. The model results are found to be reasonable and the model can be found to simulate higher water levels in the presence of air bubbles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Furthermore, it presents several measures which can help reduce the losses of property and life during cyclone attacks including better preparation to various natural hazards, cyclone-shelter management, and building of coastal embankments.

Five locations in the central Bay of Bengal (BoB) along a longitudinal transect at 88E were sampled during the Fall Intermonsoon, 2002 for mesozooplankton biomass, abundance, groups and copepod species composition. Stations at 9N and 18N had signatures of cold-core eddies. Despite the notion that biological productivity in the BoB is poor, the mesozooplankton biomass (57-185 mM C m-2) and abundance (33-171 [X 103] individuals m-2) in the upper 1000 m were high and arc close to the annual averages reported from the central Arabian Sea. The cold-core eddy at 9N led to elevated chlorophyll a (maximum 0.4 mg m-3) and mesozooplankton biomass up to 36 mg C m-3 in the mixed layer. The biomass at the other cold-core eddy station at 18N was not as high as that at 9N, due to lower chl a levels apparently due to light limitation caused by turbidity. Based on the spatial distribution of copepods (>70% of the total mesozooplankton abundance), the 9N station and the 18N and 20N stations differed completely from the in-between stations at 12N and 15N. While the number of copepod species was the highest at 9N, diversity and evenness were the lowest due to the predominance of Oncaea venusta (26%) and Paracalanus indicus (25%). The lowest species richness with highest evenness was observed at 18N probably due to the oxygen depletion at shallower depths (5 μM between 80 and 500 m). Species richness and diversity were the highest at the noneddy location 12N, where biomass (60 mM C m-2) and abundance (70 X 103 individuals m-2) were lower. Of the eight most abundant species, Oncaea venusta (21%), Paracalanus indicus (19%), P. aculeatus, Oithona similis, Corycaeus danae and Eucalanus monachus were abundant in the upper 200 m of the two cold-core eddy stations, whereas Pleuromanmma indica and Lucicutia flavicornis were abundant throughout the upper 1000 m north of 15N. Though many groups (26) arid as many as 170 copepod species were recorded during this study, copepod species richness diminished with the dwindling dissolved oxygen concentrations north of 15N. The salinity anomalies are positive in the southeastern equatorial Indian Ocean and negative in the central equatorial Indian Ocean. The advection of low salinity water from the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal is attributed to the salinity anomalies in the central equatorial Indian Ocean. Dynamic height (DH) computations are necessary for the estimation of geostrophic currents, heat transport studies, identification of eddies and to validate the altimeter sea surface height (SSH) observations. To Compute DHs we need the temperature and salinity profiles to a reasonable deeper level. But, temperature profiles alone, such as from XBT (expendable bathy thermograph), are more numerous than combined temperature and salinity measurements from CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth). To use these voluminous temperature measurements from XBT observations in the computation of DHs, temperature/salinity relations were developed in many oceanic regions. Since such an exercise cannot be carried out in the Bay of Bengal due to the absence of adequate CTD measurements, we have proposed a method of utilizing XBT measurements and climatological (Levitus and Boyer, 1994) salinities to compute the DHs. The approach is demonstrated by replacing the CTD salinities with the climatological salinities. The relative errors compared to the DH signals are 3.8%, 2.7% and 2.6% for 200, 700 and 1000 dbar levels, respectively. The DHs relative to 700 dbar computed using the XBT temperature and climatological salinity profiles are compared with the SSH observations from TOPEX altimeter.
