This research evaluates induced travel demand with the construction of transport infrastructure, using flyovers as a case study. Induced travel demand is defined as an increase in travel as a result of any increase in the capacity of a transportation system. However, relatively little is known about the induced travel demand effects of flyover infrastructure in developing countries.

AbstractModern cities have witnessed a significant level of transformation of urban environments, in which the urban neighbourhoods of recent origin have also changed. This paper explores the transformation of public space in contemporary urban neighbourhoods of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. It examines the changing provision and use of public space through a case study of three recent neighbourhoods using observations and interviews. The study identifies fundamental differences in the development of public space, suggesting that public spaces are no longer the central elements of new neighbourhoods. Further changes with the provision of public space include the existing spatial configuration of open spaces, the loss of social quality of neighbourhood streets and the rise of alternative public venues. The changing provision of public space has influenced the use with the shifting locations of public activities. There is a growing tendency to use the streets as a public space along with other privately owned public spaces. While a large portion of public space remains underutilised or has been put into an inappropriate use, some new uses of public spaces are also noticed in the changing context.

Within and between analysis methods are used to find whether the communication styles of leaders are different or the same with all of their subordinates. The average and vertical dyad linkage models were used to test the two methods, with it found that an evaluative dimension of communicator style was most closely related to the average or group-level model. It was also found that a dynamic dimension was closely related only to a special null condition, and that both dimensions of communicator style were strongly associated with subordinate satisfaction with supervisors.

This research identifies the impacts of residential dissonance on residential mobility behavior in transit-oriented developments (TODs) versus non-TODs in Brisbane, Australia. On the basis of the characteristics of living environments (density, diversity, connectivity, and accessibility) and the travel preferences of 4,545 individuals, respondents in 2009 were classified into one of four categories: TOD consonants, TOD dissonants, non-TOD dissonants, and non-TOD consonants. Binary logistic regression analyses were employed to identify residential mobility behavior of groups between 2009 and 2011 while controlling for time-varying covariates. The findings show that both TOD dissonants and TOD consonants move residences at an equal rate. However, TOD dissonants are more likely to move residences to their preferred non-TOD areas. In contrast, non-TOD dissonants not only move residences at a lower rate, but their rate of mobility to their preferred TOD neighborhood is also significantly lower because of costs and other associated factors. The findings suggest that development of policies for discrete land use is required to integrate non-TOD dissonant and TOD dissonant behaviors to support TOD development in Brisbane.

Rural, regional, and remote settlements in Australia require resilient infrastructure to remain sustainable in a context characterized by frequent large-scale natural disasters, long distances between urban centers, and the pressures of economic change. A critical aspect of this infrastructure is the air services network, a system of airports, aircraft operators, and related industries that enables the high-speed movement of people, goods, and services to remote locations. A process of deregulation during the 1970s and 1980s resulted in many of these airports passing into local government and private ownership, and the rationalization of the industry saw the closure of a number of airlines and airports. This paper examines the impacts of deregulation on the resilience of air services and the contribution that they make to regional and rural communities. In particular, the robustness, redundancy, resourcefulness, and rapidity of the system are examined. The conclusion is that while the air services network has remained resilient in a situation of considerable change, the pressures of commercialization and the tendency to manage aspects of the system in isolation have contributed to a potential decrease in overall resilience.

Australia's airline industry was born on connecting regional communities to major cities, but almost a century later, many regional and remote communities are facing the prospect of losing their air transport services. The focus of this paper is to highlight key issues and concerns surrounding remote, rural and regional airports in Australia using a network governance framework. Contributions are focused towards regional and remote airport managers, decision makers, and policy makers to stimulate further discussion towards retaining regional and remote services to communities.

Airport development is an inherently risky proposition and regulation can add to uncertainty in the business environment. The privatisation of Australian federal airports between 1996 and 2003 mainstreamed airport development into metropolitan non-residential property markets with all the normal commercial risks including adverse community reaction to the new phenomenon of the airport city because of the attendant environmental, economic and traffic impacts involved. The Australian Government's National Aviation Review in 2008–2009 canvassed this dissent, resulting in a raft of statutory and administrative-based recommendations. Against this backdrop, and drawing on interviews with airport representatives and the deliberations of industry forums, this paper explores the attitudes of airport planning and property managers to the revised regulatory regime announced in the Government's White Paper in December 2009. It provides a case study of corporate response to several dimensions of uncertainty accompanying regulatory change in the post-privatisation era.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is well suited to the investigation of breast cancer by virtue of its noninvasive nature and its multiplanar imaging abilities. MRI investigations showed high sensitivity but modest specificity for breast cancer detection and diagnosis. Most early studies tested the ability of MRI to evaluate and diagnose findings in the breast discovered by other imaging tests or by breast physical examination (1–4). When it was discovered that MRI identified small breast cancers undetected by mammography or breast ultrasound, MRI was used to estimate breast cancer extent in known cancer cases for surgical planning (5,6). These investigations led to the use of MRI in a multitude of breast imaging applications, raising further questions about the use of MRI in everyday practice: What are the indications for breast MRI in general practice? What is its role in light of other imaging tests? What are its benefits and limitations in each setting? How do I report these studies? The purpose of this article is to review the clinical background regarding indications for the use of MRI and relevant cases in which MRI can impact patient management in breast disease, and to describe new developments in reporting breast MRI studies. The selective binding of serum amyloid P component (SAP) to proteins in the pathological amyloid cross‐β fold suggests a possible chaperone role. Here we show that human SAP enhances the refolding yield of denatured lactate dehydrogenase and protects against enzyme inactivation during agitation of dilute solutions. These effects are independent of calcium ions and are not inhibited by compounds that block the amyloid recognition site on the B face of SAP, implicating the A face and/or the edges of the SAP pentamer. We discuss the possibility that the chaperone property of SAP, or its failure, may contribute to the pathogenesis of amyloidosis.

• Case management and quality assurance techniques were used in a program designed to improve the process and outcomes of care for inner-city children with asthma. The program had three major elements: assessment of the care of individual patients and feedback to their primary care providers, periodic contact with parents, and provision of educational materials about asthma to parents. Telephone interviews with parents were used to assess knowledge of home asthma care and the type of care prescribed by the child's physician. Medicaid and hospital records were used to measure acute care utilization. Eighty-eight children (aged 0 to 5 years) who had made more than two emergency room visits for asthma were recruited by telephone. Fifty-six prescribing errors were identified, 24 being failure to prescribe an additional drug for short-term use by children receiving continuous therapy. Acute care use dropped 50% compared with a control period. This type of program is feasible but may require in-person recruiting to reach high-risk families without telephones.(AJDC 1988;142:748-752)

Study objective:To evaluate a standardized training program in intraosseous (IO) infusion for prehospital providers.

A transient, multidimensional, finite-element code has been developed for predicting the time-dependent thermal field within solid geometries exposed to spatially varying, time-dependent boundary conditions. First, validation of the code is performed using both two- and three-dimensional finite-element meshes exposed to either step change or harmonically varying boundary conditions. Numerical predictions from the simulation are in very good agreement with analytical solutions for all types of elements and boundary conditions considered. Subsequently, the effects of time step, sampling frequency of harmonic boundary conditions, and grid density on solution accuracy and convergence are explored. The results suggest appropriate time stepping strategies for the time derivative of temperature, and optimum sampling rates for harmonic boundary conditions. Guidelines for mesh refinement near boundary surfaces are also furnished.

Abstract: Repeated cutting of vegetation at or near ground level in power-line corridors is a common practice for inhibiting tree growth and regeneration. However, few data exist on long-term community responses. In this study, we sampled 20 northern Kentucky power-line corridors and compared their seedling and sapling communities to the edges and interiors of adjacent undisturbed forests. Mean seedling and sapling density in corridors was roughly twice that of adjacent undisturbed forest interiors, suggesting that repeated cutting is not a viable method of inhibiting tree regeneration. Corridor communities were dominated byRobinia pseudoacacia (black locust) andFraxinus americana (white ash), but ordinations indicated strong similaritties among communities in corridors and adjacent forests. Many of the tree species found in adjacent forests, with the exception of a few shade-tolerant species, had highest seedling and sapling densities in corridors. Stump or root sprouting by many species appears to regenerate forests quickly after cutting. However, disturbed soil and detritus accumulations caused by management crews and their equipment may also create a large variety of microsites for seedling establishment. Because repeated cutting selects for dominance by species with highest sprout growth rates, it should not be used as the sole management technique. It may instead be used to alter the vigor, stature, and stored reserves of trees so that herbicides or other methods of tree control can be used more efficiently.

A model of cognitive and affective antecedents and consequences of personal goals, which integrates constructs from social-cognitive and attribution theories, was examined. Data were gathered before and after course examinations in a large university class. Hierarchical and moderated regression analyses supported the model indicating that (1) relationships between self-efficacy, goals, and performance were positive during repeated trials over 4 1/2 months in a naturally occurring setting; (2) the stability dimension of causal attributions moderated the relationship between goal-performance discrepancies and self-efficacy; and (3) the locus of causality dimension of causal attributions moderated the relationship between goal-performance discrepancies and affective responses.

A methodology is proposed to integrate a large scale excavation with a reclamation strategy over a six-year period. The Keenleyside Powerplant project in southern British Columbia requires an estimated 1.9 million cubic meters of material to be excavated to facilitate the development of a powerhouse and intake structures adjacent to the Keenleyside dam near Castlegar. The excavated material is to be used for both construction purposes and for spoil. A 65 hectare area on the north bank of the Arrow Reservoir, upstream of the Keenleyside Dam, has been designated as the spoil site. A progressive, staged reclamation strategy is proposed by B.C. Hydro that identifies opportunity landscapes for recreation and wildlife enhancement along the Arrow Reservoir. The spoil material from the powerhouse excavation is sequenced with nine potential areas in which new landscapes can be created. Proposed landscapes include wetland habitat with nature trails, a day-use recreation area, and a beach area. The challenge of the strategy is to coordinate the removal of materials from the construction site, separate and stockpile the usable aggregates, and sequence the material for the reclamation landscapes.

The article features Al Parker, cited founder of a form of art known as glamour illustration, defined as capturing a subject through illustration, such that it almost resembles a photograph. Parker studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in Missouri, and started working for various magazines. He said that a camera cannot capture nuances unique to individuals, but believes an artist can, which can be conveyed on paper by hand.
