The ever-growing adoption of Additive Manufacturing (AM) can be attributed to lowering prices of entry-level extrusion-based 3D printers. It has enabled use of AM for prototypes and, often, to produce complex custom commercial products. With increasing access to material extrusion-based 3D printers and newer materials, the influence of print parameters, specifically infill patterns on the mechanical strength and print costs, needs to be investigated. This study presents the relationship between various infill designs and different mechanical properties based on ASTM testing standards along with production cost-time. Relevant infill designs are recommended based on loading conditions and savings in production cost when compared to solid infill design. The influence of production cost based on production grade and entry-level printers on selection of infill design is presented. Findings from this study will help formulate criteria for selection of optimal infill design based on loading conditions and cost of printing.

The article provides information on several events and venues of Indianapolis Downtown Inc. and the Arts Council of Indiana to be held in the Circle City of Indianapolis, Indiana in 2012. The events being hosted by several venues located in Downtown, Indianapolis are described including Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Indianapolis Artsgarden, madame Walker Theatre Center. Other venues located at the cultural district of Massachusetts include the Old National Centre, the IndyFringe Basile Theatre, and the Theatre on the Square.

Approximately one-third of all home care patients have wound care needs. Home care patients tend to be older and have multiple chronic diseases rendering them at risk for developing wounds and impairing their ability to heal wounds. Enterostomal therapy (ET) nurses have expertise in wound, ostomy, and continence care, and were recently recognized by the Canadian Nurses Association as a specialty practice. We completed a systematic review in order to identify and synthesize evidence about the value of ET nurses in the Canadian home care sector, focusing on wound care. A literature search was conducted, using 9 computerized library databases. Eight articles were identified for review; each was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Two themes emerged from our analysis: (1) assessing the outcomes of ET nurse involvement in client care and (2) methods for using ET nurses' expertise. Within these themes, the benefits of ET nurses working in home care were identified: (1) a decreased number of visits, (2) reduced wound-healing times, (3) successful healing, (4) reduced cost of wound care, (5) greater support for nurses and families, (6) fewer emergency department visits, (7) fewer hospital readmissions, (8) increased interest in education in wound care among other nurses, and (9) standardized protocols for wound care. Although only 8 studies were located for this review, their findings provide evidence that ET nurses' contributions to wound care are not only positive but also necessary in the home care sector.

The possible role of S-100 brain specific proteins and their involvement in the neuronal mechanisms of habituation were investigated in identified neurons of the snail (Helix pomatia). Extracellular application and intracellular injection of antibodies into S-100 proteins caused a rapid and significant reduction of neuronal response to repeated stimulation compared with the control. A considerable reduction in the amplitude of evoked EPSP and an increase in the duration of latency of potentials was produced by the antibodies and numbers of action potentials declined. Meanwhile, membrane potential, membrane input impedance, and neuronal pacemaker potentials remained virtually unchanged. This effect is presumed to occur due to breakdown of synaptic transmission processes. The subject of possible involvement of S-100 proteins in the operation of synaptic structures as a primary apparatus for integrating neuronal activity is considered.

Proline is synthesized in animal cells by way of two alternative pathways. Both of these pathways are functional in many cell lines. The relative contribution of a pathway to total proline synthesis may be altered by a mutational event. Differences in the developmental origin of a cell line are retained as differences in the pathways of proline synthesis.

The role of DNA topoisomerases in plant cell metabolism is currently under investigation in our laboratory. Using a purified type I topoisomerase from cultured tobacco, we have carried out a biochemical characterization of enzymatic behavior. The enzyme relaxes negatively supercoiled DNA in the presence of MgCl2, and to a lesser extent in the presence of KCl. Phosphorylation of the topoisomerase does not influence its activity and it is not stimulated by the presence of histones H1 or H5. The enzyme may act in either a processive or distributive manner depending on reaction conditions. The anti-tumor drug, camptothecin, induces significant breakage by the enzyme on purified DNA molecules unless destabilized by the addition of KCl. The tobacco topoisomerase I can catalyze the formation of stable nucleosomes on circular DNA templates, suggesting a role for the enzyme in chromatin assembly.

The addition of 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB) to cultures of chick embryo pigmented epithelium rescues these cells after high doses of ultraviolet treatment. The addition of 3-AB prevents cells from losing pre-formed protein and DNA and stimulates thymidine incorporation by the cells after ultraviolet irradiation. Since 3-AB is an inhibitor of poly (ADP) ribosylation, these observations support the conclusion that death of these cells after ultra-violet irradiation depends upon poly (ADP) ribosylation and may be an apoptotic response.

The production of glutamic γ-semialdehyde, an intermediate in the synthesis of proline, was inhibited in Escherichia coliby physiological concentrations of penicillin. Sucrose (0.6 m) and sodium chloride (0.1 m) prevented penicillin inhibition of glutamic γ-semialdehyde synthesis. Cells which were in the stationary phase, or which had been permitted to metabolize without growth, were insensitive to the effects of penicillin on glutamic γ-semialdehyde synthesis.

BECAUSE uncontrolled production of metabolites is rare in nature it has been concluded that the ability to regulate biosynthetic pathways confers an evolutionary advantage on a species. The advantage has been interpreted as arising from a more efficient use of energy which leads to more rapid growth in a competitive environment. The advantage gained by control of a pathway can thus be estimated by comparing the relative growth rates of two strains which are isogenic, except that one lacks control of the pathway.
