SUICIDE bombers , *BOMBERS (Terrorists) , *RELIGION , *ISLAM , *PSYCHOLOGISTS , *ANTHROPOLOGISTS - Abstract
The article considers factors that make a suicide bomber. While suicide terrorists invariably come from oppressed communities, recent research by psychologists, anthropologists and others suggests that they fit none of the other common profiles. They are no less rational or sane, no worse educated, no poorer and no more religious than anyone else. Killing yourself while killing your enemy is not a modern idea. The link with religion is more complicated since most Islamic terrorist groups use religious propaganda, largely the promise of paradise, to prepare recruits for suicide missions. Yet suicide terrorism is in no way exclusive either to religious groups or to Islamic culture.

ARAB-Israeli conflict, 1993- , *PEACE treaties , *INTERNATIONAL mediation , *TERRORISM , *BOMBERS (Terrorists) ,PALESTINIAN politics & government, 1993- ,ISRAELI politics & government, 1993- - Abstract
The authors argue the Geneva Accord, which claims to be the comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fails to defend Israel's most basic interests. The Accord, a European-funded effort secretly negotiated by Palestinian officials and Israeli public figures for two years--and signed in a symbolic, lavish ceremony in Geneva this week--states that Israel will withdraw to the 1967 borders, a Palestinian state will emerge with its capital in Jerusalem, and the two peoples will recognize each other's right to statehood and resolve the refugee issue. Most Israelis are now ready to forfeit the results of the 1967 war--control over the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem--in return for Palestinian acceptance of the outcome of the 1948 war. Most Israelis also view the creation of a Palestinian state not as a mortal threat but as the only means of preserving Israel's Jewish and democratic identity. The centrist Israeli majority supports establishing a Palestinian state, but only after the Palestinians have ended terrorism, reformed their government, and renounced their insistence on returning Palestinian refugees to Israel. The Accord, though, ignores even those minimal expectations. Instead, it would grant the Palestinians a state while they wage a terrorist war, legitimize and even strengthen Yasir Arafat's rule, and force Israel to accept the principle of repatriating refugees. In addition, it undermines the global war on terrorism and would threaten any future compromise in the region.

The author reports on how U.S. troops are coping with the continuing violence in Iraq. President Bush says the media are overplaying the violence in Iraq. Yet the past two weeks' casualties would make anyone take notice. While American casualties fluctuate month to month, they're spiking again. Bush is right, of course, to say the killings aren't the only news from Iraq. The U.S. has been making headway in restoring the country to normality. The fact is, the realities coexist: this is a country working to move on amid a shooting war that will not end. Some days it feels as if Iraqis opposing the U.S. presence are throwing everything they can at the young soldiers and the locals helping them rebuild the country. Despite the best efforts of field commanders, the U.S.-led coalition is still struggling to contain the threat. And the latest spasm of attacks has only deepened unease that the chaos of the early postwar days may be evolving into a more deliberate resistance, as scattershot hostility hardens into something more organized and sophisticated. Some people contend that the 338 American soldiers who have died in Iraq since the war began amount to a hearteningly low toll out of the 130,000-strong U.S. force. But others, including many of the troops, are dismayed that 199 of those deaths have come since Bush's May 1 declaration that "major combat operations in Iraq have ended." U.S. officials in Iraq say their troops are coming under attack an average of 20 times a day. The danger zones are also expanding. Whatever their exact affiliation and degree of organization, all the militants are pursuing the same objective: to force the U.S. out of Iraq. An unscientific but arresting survey last week in Stars and Stripes, reported that half the troops serving in Iraq believe their unit's morale is low.

The article focuses on the assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten of Great Britain which involves the Irish Republican Army (IRA). It states that the boat explosion that killed the patriarchal figure and the elder statesman of Great Britain's royal family was claimed by the IRA. It says that Mountbatten has been considered as an illogical target of the IRA Mullaghmore, who was fleeing across the border of Northern Ireland. It mentions that the bomb on Mountbatten's boat has been detonated by a timing device or by a remote control as speculated by the police. Meanwhile, a ceremonial funeral for Mountbatten, along with his grandson and Dowager Lady Brabourne was held at Westminster Abbey and the bodies were flown to Broadlands in England to lie in the white porticoed mansion of the state.

ISLANDS , *TOURISM , *ETHNICITY , *TERRORISM , *CHRISTIANITY , *MUSLIMS , *ISLAMIC fundamentalism , *BOMBERS (Terrorists) , *RELIGION , *AMERICANS , *EUROPEANS - Abstract
This article discusses the current condition of the resort islands off the coast of Kenya, and the effects that terrorism has had on them in the recent years. According to Gerald, the men were providing backup for CIA operatives and American Special Forces troops who had recently snuck across the border into Somalia to kidnap a Yemeni, known as Sheik Jaylani, who is linked to the suicide boat-bomb attack against the USS Cole in Aden three years ago. The Thanksgiving Day 2002 suicide attack on the Paradise Hotel near Mombasa and the simultaneous attempted downing of an Israeli jetliner with shoulder-fired missiles have badly damaged Kenya's tourism industry: Though in 1996 Kenya attracted more than one million tourists, the Kenya Tourist Board says that it drew roughly 480,000 between January and November of 2003. On the seaside patio of the Peponi, a small, family-run hotel on Shela beach that's the social center of the island, there was the usual crowd of Europeans and the occasional American who gossiped over stiff drinks while Kenyan beach boys in Rastafarian hairdos proffered rides on old wooden sailing dhows, traditional ships that historically plied the coasts of Africa and Arabia. But, in the dank warrens of Lamu Town two miles down the beach, there are more serious problems. The residents of Lamu Town are primarily Muslim traders, fishermen, boat-builders, and coconut farmers. Most do not share in the island's tourist-generated wealth and have felt neglected for decades by the Christian-dominated Kenyan central government. And, though Lamu is hardly a hotbed of Islamic extremism, Moi's mistakes and the dichotomy between Western tourists and the Lamu Town poor have created a welcoming atmosphere for Muslim extremists' anti-Western message.

The article discusses the police investigation for the serial bomber George Metesky, known as F.P. or the mad bomber, in New York City for his string of bombings of public locations from 1940-1956. It was the first time police use a psychiatrist to draw an emotional profile of a criminal, a practice later known as profiling. Psychiatrist James A. Brussel of the New York Department of Mental Hygiene was called on to look over evidence including notes written by the bomber to newspapers and develop a portrait of a man which included being a paranoid schizophrenic, well-groomed, a Slavic-born immigrant, and in his mid-40s.

The article discusses how a handful of incidents have indicated the insecure nature of the world and the reaction of the world has been to respond with an ideology of rushed nationalism. It refers to a suicide bomber, who created havoc in Pakistan when he detonated himself in an open space at a religious shrine in Sindh. It explains how the rushed nationalism has led to abrupt shift to the right within the political environment of a country and especially in response to terrorism activities.

PRACTICAL politics ,POLITICAL participation ,ARMED Forces ,BOMBERS (Terrorists) - Abstract
This article presents information on practical politics. Nazi attack on Great Britain may begin any day. Soviet Union's march into the lands which Germany regards as peculiarly its Lebensraum provides an additional reason for haste. But the risks of an attempt at invasion are very formidable so long as the Royal Air Force is unconquered. Every night now German bombers are ranging far and wide over Britain seeking to smash airfields, factories, and docks. Hope that French resistance would be carried on in the colonies appears to have vanished, and the final disposition of the French navy remains a mystery. Three U.S. cruises are now pursuing "good-will" missions in South America, but if we are to combat the influence of high-riding European dictators, we shall have to contribute something more solid than good-will to the pan-American balance sheet.

The article reports that the sentence of the Boston Bomber Tsarnaev, shows that death penalty is political and macabre. It states that appeals process seems opaque and the administrative procedures for determining time of execution and for maximizing media attention are volatile. It mentions that as major drug companies are declining to make anesthetic drugs for executions, judges asked whether a gas chamber or a firing squad might be more appropriate shows the macabre face of death penalty.
