The article discusses the use and abuse of pain management drugs such as benzodiazepines and opiates and screening methods for the detection of drug abuse as well as therapeutic drug monitoring purposes in patient samples. It discusses screening techniques such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), high-pressure liquid chromatography/ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC/UHPLC) and ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry (MS).
