Recent Antarctic sea-ice decline is a substantial source of concern, notably the record low in 2023 (ref. 1). Progress has been made towards establishing the causes of ice loss1, 2, 3, 4–5but uncertainty remains about its consequences for ocean–atmosphere interaction. Resolution of this uncertainty is important as ice decline can substantially alter surface heat loss and thus the ocean and atmosphere6. Here we show that the strongest winter 2023 ice-retraction regions provide an important new source of turbulent ocean heat loss to the atmosphere in wintertime. Ice concentration in these regions (located primarily in the Weddell, Bellingshausen and Ross seas) is reduced by up to 80% and is accompanied by an unprecedented doubling of mid-winter ocean heat loss. Also, there is a phase shift in the time of peak heat loss from late April to mid-June, with weaker than normal heat loss in austral autumn. The winter surface-heat-loss intensification is accompanied by substantial changes on both sides of the ocean–atmosphere interface. These include increases in atmospheric-storm frequency and surface-heat-loss-driven dense water formation, although the implications of the densification for broader processes such as Antarctic bottom water formation remain unclear. Our results reveal that the 2023 Antarctic sea-ice loss has substantially modified air–sea interaction in the Southern Ocean and motivate in-depth analysis of the wider climate-system impacts.

The impact of intoxicating substances both licit and illicit has been integral to expressions of colonial power and the control of colonised populations, including in Caribbean societies. Historically, licensing laws and carceral institutions were used to discipline workers, and the ongoing criminalisation of certain drugs illustrates the transhistorical legacies that continue to haunt former British colonies like Guyana. Focusing on prisons and prisoners to explore the histories and lingering legacies of colonial drug policies in the country, despite a much‐changed international context, this article documents experiences of, and approaches to, the management and prohibition of psychoactive substances. It reveals connections and continuities between substance use, enslavement, labour, and incarceration, and their relationship both to what we conceptualise as ‘the colonial imaginary’ and ‘booty capitalism’ of the modern age. The article will show how now and in the past, the colonisers partook in extractive booty capitalism (Weber, 1930), while in order to survive, the colonised partook in booty capitalism of the streets (Wacquant, 2003).

This article reflects on the research process that underpinned the ESRC GCRF project ‘Mental Health, Neurological and Substance Abuse Disorders in Guyana's Jails: 1825 to the present day’. Introducing readers to a transdisciplinary team comprised of academics and practitioners, in what follows we think through how the methods of the research underpinned the production of the data used in this special issue. The article highlights the emotional labour and ethics of care among the team, and the benefits of transdisciplinary research and the mutual recipriocity and learning that took place between academics and prison staff. The goal of the project was to create equitable and ethical partnerships, and this contributed to the success of this research in terms of findings, data, and real‐world impact.

In this exploratory article, we look at the understudied area of prison officer's lives in the Global South and the pains of their jobs. We provide a novel and decolonial perspective on these phenomena by documenting and discussing first‐hand prison officer accounts and first‐person observations of the different dimensions of their experiences of work and home today. We understand how they see and understand their jobs, including what the pains of imprisonment for officers in Guyana look and feel like from the bottom up. We learn about what prison officers perceive as the pains of their employment in Guyana – working conditions; psychological pains; prison infrastructure; intimate relations; prison within prison; social pains; and insecurity – and how such issues include echoes of the colonial past and impact officers not just in their everyday lives but how these pains also impact those closest to them. In this way, we show how, and why, the legacies of colonialism continue to haunt contemporary prison officers in Guyana.

Cabbage is susceptible to various microbiological risks, frequently serving as a vehicle for pathogenic bacteria, mainly Salmonellaand Escherichia coli. Therefore, ensuring the safety of this vegetable is essential to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. Traditional sanitization using chlorinated water, although effective, raises concerns due to the production of potentially carcinogenic compounds, and this method is banned in some countries. In recent years, alternative sanitizing methods have been developed using essential oils (EOs). However, EOs present high volatility, limited solubility in water, and strong odor and taste. This study introduces an innovative approach to overcome these disadvantages by employing carvacrol encapsulated into chia mucilage nanocapsules (CMNC), prepared through high-energy homogenization. Encapsulating carvacrol in chia mucilage nanocapsules helps to mask its strong sensory characteristics, making it more suitable and acceptable for use in food applications. The antimicrobial efficacy of CMNC (1.67 mg/mL), carvacrol emulsion (CE: 10.6 mg/mL), and chlorine solution (CS: 200 ppm) was evaluated against Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria monocytogenes. CMNC decreased Salmonellato levels below the detection limit of the technique (< 2 log CFU/g), reduced 3.5 log CFU/g of E. coli, and 2.5 log CFU/g of L. monocytogenes. These results are similar to or better than those obtained with CS. In addition, sanitizing cabbage with CMNC preserved the firmness and color of the samples, important aspects for consumer acceptance. This innovative approach is promising for increasing the food safety of cabbage, while mitigating the potential drawbacks associated with traditional sanitization methods.

IMPORTANCE: The autonomic nervous system maintains internal stability by concurrently prioritizing and managing different functions. It is currently not known whether dysfunction at the aerodigestive junction could overwhelm autonomic control and impair other functions. OBJECTIVE: To compare baroreflex sensitivity, a prognostically significant index of the autonomic system’s ability to stabilize blood pressure, between patients with predominantly esophagogastric (digestive) and patients with predominantly laryngopharyngeal (aerodigestive) symptoms. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional study, between 2018 and 2019, of adults undergoing esophagal manometry or transnasal panendoscopy was carried out in a specialist center. The analysis took place between 2023 and 2024. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Heart rate and blood pressure were recorded and baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability were derived. Esophageal physiology was assessed with high-resolution manometry. RESULTS: There were 30 and 23 patients in the digestive and aerodigestive groups, respectively. The mean (SD) age was 61 (15) years and there were 26 women and 27 men. Compared with patients in the digestive group, more patients in the aerodigestive group had voice or throat symptoms and fewer had classic reflux symptoms (odds ratio [OR], 5.65; 95% CI, 1.82-17.5; OR, 2.07; 95% CI, 1.28-3.33; and OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.38-0.95, respectively). Patients in the aerodigestive group had higher mean (SD) resting heart rate (93 [17] vs 75 [13] min−1; difference of means, −18 min−1; 95% CI, −26 to −10), lower resting mean (SD) arterial pressure (94 [16] vs 104 [23] mm Hg, OR, 10; 95% CI, −1 to 21), lower mean (SD) baroreflex sensitivity (3.77 [0.79] vs 9.76 [2.92] s−3mm Hg−1; OR, 6.0 s−3mmHg−1; 95% CI, 4.7-7.2), and lower mean (SD) parasympathetic-spectrum heart rate variability (0.68 [0.15] vs 1.30 [0.53]; OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.39-0.85). There was a correlation between reduced lower esophageal relaxation (integrated relaxation pressure) and reduced baroreflex sensitivity (r = −0.33; 95% CI, −0.58 to −0.03). CONCLUSIONS: In this cross-sectional study of adults undergoing esophageal manometry or transnasal panendoscopy, patients with laryngopharyngeal symptoms had reduced baroreflex sensitivity, indicating diminished vagal control compared with patients with esophagogastric symptoms. The overwhelmed vagus hypothesis may explain these responses by considering autonomic functions as competing consumers of the finite regulatory resources of a common controller. The regulatory demands of maintaining a safe airway with concurrent laryngopharyngeal sensorimotor dysfunction, superadded to baseline demands for dual speech and aerodigestive control, could overwhelm and force the system to deprioritize less immediate functions like esophageal relaxation and the baroreflex. Measuring baroreflex sensitivity, now possible in routine clinical practice, could enable phenotyping and objective outcome assessment for laryngopharyngeal dysfunction. A neurophysiological model for considering laryngopharyngeal sensorimotor dysfunction could in turn move patient care toward a more holistic autonomic health footing.

The pandemic has intensified clinicians’ workloads, leading to an increased incidence of adverse events and subsequent second victim syndrome, with almost half of health care clinicians experiencing its symptoms. However, following a literature review, no tools were found that addressed second victim syndrome in nurses. To address these issues and the gap in the literature, the authors developed the BONE Break hot debriefing tool. BONE Break is designed to be facilitated by charge nurses or other unit leaders as a means of offering peer support to other nurses who went through an adverse event. During its initial implementation, BONE Break was employed in 43 of 46 events adverse events (93.5%), and 41 of 43 sessions (95.3%) were deemed helpful. The research team has continued to gain stakeholder buy-in and implement BONE Break across multiple sites. Future work will determine BONE Break's efficacy in enhancing long-term nursing retention and reducing second victim symptoms.

He experienced perfluorocarbon retention, migration into the anterior chamber, and subsequent development of nodules on the iris surface.

Amblyomma maculatumKoch, the Gulf Coast tick, is expanding northward from its original range in the southeastern United States. In 2013, its most northern collection was in Delaware. Amblyomma maculatumhas since been found in Connecticut, Illinois, and New York. It is the vector of the human pathogen Rickettsia parkeri, the causative agent of R. parkeririckettsiosis. We report the first finding of an established population of A. maculatumin Salem County, NJ, with a R. parkeriinfection prevalence rate of 23.8%. Our finding of A. maculatumis consistent with other recent findings in the northeastern United States in that specimens were found in open areas devoid of tree canopy. This discovery demonstrates the importance of tick surveillance in order to identify expanding tick populations and the pathogens they may transmit.

The conserved enzyme aminolevulinic acid synthase (ALAS) initiates heme biosynthesis in certain bacteria and eukaryotes by catalyzing the condensation of glycine and succinyl-CoA to yield aminolevulinic acid. In humans, the ALAS isoform responsible for heme production during red blood cell development is the erythroid-specific ALAS2 isoform. Owing to its essential role in erythropoiesis, changes in human ALAS2 (hALAS2) function can lead to two different blood disorders. X-linked sideroblastic anemia results from loss of ALAS2 function, while X-linked protoporphyria results from gain of ALAS2 function. Interestingly, mutations in the ALAS2 C-terminal extension can be implicated in both diseases. Here, we investigate the molecular basis for enzyme dysfunction mediated by two previously reported C-terminal loss-of-function variants, hALAS2 V562A and M567I. We show that the mutations do not result in gross structural perturbations, but the enzyme stability for V562A is decreased. Additionally, we show that enzyme stability moderately increases with the addition of the pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) cofactor for both variants. The variants display differential binding to PLP and the individual substrates compared to wild-type hALAS2. Although hALAS2 V562A is a more active enzyme in vitro, it is less efficient concerning succinyl-CoA binding. In contrast, the M567I mutation significantly alters the cooperativity of substrate binding. In combination with previously reported cell-based studies, our work reveals the molecular basis by which hALAS2 C-terminal mutations negatively affect ALA production necessary for proper heme biosynthesis.

Arthropods are active during the winter in temperate regions. Many use the seasonal snowpack as a buffer against harsh ambient conditions and are active in a refugium known as the subnivium. While the use of the subnivium by arthropods is well established, far less is known about subnivium community composition, abundance, biomass, and diversity and how these characteristics compare with the community in the summer. Understanding subnivium communities is especially important given the observed and anticipated changes in snowpack depth and duration due to the changing climate. We compared subnivium arthropod communities with those active during the summer using pitfall trapping in northern New Hampshire. We found that compositions of ground-active arthropod communities in the subnivium differed from those in the summer. The subnivium arthropod community featured moderate levels of richness and other measures of diversity that tended to be lower than the summer community. More strikingly, the subnivium community was much lower in overall abundance and biomass. Interestingly, some arthropods were dominant in the subnivium but either rare or absent in summer collections. These putative “subnivium specialists” included the spider Cicurina brevis(Emerton 1890) (Araneae: Hahniidae) and 3 rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae): Arpedium cribratumFauvel, 1878, Lesteva pallipesLeConte, 1863, and Porrhodites inflatus(Hatch, 1957). The Pacific Coast tick (Dermacentor occidentalisMarx, 1892) is a frequently encountered and commonly reported human-biting tick species that has been recorded from most of California and parts of southwestern Oregon, southcentral Washington, and northwestern Mexico. Although previous investigators have surveyed populations of D. occidentalisfor the presence of Rickettsiaspecies across several regions of California, populations of this tick have not been surveyed heretofore for rickettsiae from Baja California, Oregon, or Washington. We evaluated 1,367 host-seeking, D. occidentalisadults collected from 2015 to 2022 by flagging vegetation at multiple sites in Baja California, Mexico, and Oregon and Washington, United States, using genus- and species-specific assays for spotted fever group rickettsiae. DNA of Rickettsia364D, R. bellii, and R. tillamookensiswas not detected in specimens from these regions. DNA of R. rhipicephaliwas detected in D. occidentalisspecimens obtained from Ensenada Municipality in Baja California and southwestern Oregon, but not from Washington. All ompA sequences of R. rhipichephalithat were amplified from individual ticks in southwestern Oregon were represented by a single genotype. DNA of the Ixodes pacificusrickettsial endosymbiont was amplified from specimens collected in southwestern Oregon and Klickitat County, Washington; to the best of our knowledge, this Rickettsiaspecies has never been identified in D. occidentalis. Collectively, these data are consistent with a relatively recent introduction of Pacific Coast ticks in the northernmost extension of its recognized range.

AbstractWe estimated the extent of respiratory virus transmission over three pre-COVID-19 seasons. Of 16,273 assays, 22.9% (3,726) detected ≥1 respiratory virus. The frequency of putatively hospital-acquired infection ranged from 6.9% (influenza A/B) to 24.7% (adenovirus). The 176 clusters were most commonly associated with rhinovirus/enterovirus (70) and influenza A/B (62).

Rapid genomic testing in critically ill children is becoming the standard of care where there is a high suspicion of an underlying genetic condition and should be provided equitably for all patients in acute care settings. The HGSA encourages an appropriately resourced multidisciplinary team approach, particularly involving genetic health professionals, wherever practicable in the delivery of rapid genomic testing services. Pre-test genetic counselling should be tailored to the family and followup appointments should be offered. Explicit informed consent for rapid genomic testing should be obtained, even in acute care settings. Rapid genomic testing should be delivered with as fast a turnaround time as possible. Laboratories should use genome, rather than exome, sequencing wherever possible. Incidental, secondary findings, and variants of uncertain significance should be reported judiciously. While we recommend the trio approach in this setting, infants or children should not be excluded from rapid genomic testing programmes if one or both biological parents are unavailable.

The multiple prosecutions of a former President, and the threat of reprisals should he return to the Oval Office, places the Republic on an awful precipice. There is a pervasive perception that prosecutions have been, or soon will be, weaponized against opponents. To restore confidence, an innovative check is essential. We propose the creation of a Prosecutor Jury—a mechanism that balances the requirement that politicians be held accountable for their crimes, against the need to avert weaponized prosecutions that target enemies. Before prosecuting high-level politicians, the Department of Justice should randomly select ten former prosecutors nominated by Democratic Presidents and ten former prosecutors nominated by Republican Presidents. The Department should prosecute only if at least two-thirds of these former prosecutors agree that a prosecution is warranted. Further, the Department should apply this framework to decide whether to prosecute presidential candidates, members of Congress, candidates for Congress, and federal judges. To test our procedure and provide a simulacrum, we applied our framework, and conducted surveys of former US Attorneys to assess whether former President Donald Trump should have been indicted, yielding fascinating results. The results differed substantially across the indictments, with strong bipartisan support for the Florida prosecution. We believe that Prosecutor Juries have the potential to ensure that no high officer is above the law, nor laid low because of partisan machinations.

As one of the functions integrating energy management systems, state estimation (SE) is instrumental in monitoring power networks, allowing the best possible use of energy resources. It plays a decisive role in debugging if sufficient data are available, ruined if not. Criticality analysis (CA) integrates SE as a module in which elements of the estimation process—taken one-by-one or grouped (tuples of minimal multiple cardinality)—are designated essential. The combinatorial nature of extensive CA (ExtCA), derestricted from identifying only low-cardinality critical tuples, characterizes its computational complexity and imposes defiant limits in implementing it. This paper presents the methodology for ExtCA and compares algorithms to find an efficient solution for expanding the boundaries of this analysis problem. The algorithms used for comparison are one sequential Branch&Bound (a well-known paradigm for combinatorial optimization recently used in ExtCA) and two new parallels implemented on the central processing unit (CPU) and the graphics processing unit (GPU). The conceived parallel architecture favors evaluating massive combinations of diverse cardinality measuring unit (MU) tuples in ExtCA. The acronym MU refers to the aggregate of devices deployed at substations, such as a remote terminal unit, intelligent electronic device, and phasor measurement unit. The numerical results obtained in the paper show significant speed-ups with the novel parallel GPU algorithm, tested on different and real-scale power grids. Since, the visualization of the ExtCA results is still not a well-explored field, this work also presents a novel way of graphically depicting spots of weak observability using MU-oriented ExtCA.

Background: Sleeve gastrectomy has become a gold standard in addressing medically refractory obesity. Robotic platforms are becoming more utilized, however, data on its cost-effectiveness compared to laparoscopy remain controversial (1–3). At NYU Langone Health, many of the bariatric surgeons adopted robotic surgery as part of their practices starting in 2021. We present a retrospective cost analysis of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) vs. robotic sleeve gastrectomy (RSG) at New York University (NYU) Langone Health campuses. Methods: All adult patients ages 18–65 who underwent LSG or RSG from 202 to 2023 at NYU Langone Health campuses (Manhattan, Long Island, and Brooklyn) were evaluated via electronic medical records and MBSAQIP 30-day follow-up data. Patients with prior bariatric surgery were excluded. Complication-related ICD-10/CPT codes are collected and readmission costs will be estimated from ICD codes using the lower limit of CMS transparent NYU standard charges (3). Direct charge data for surgery and length of stay cost data were also obtained. Statistical T-test and chi-squared analysis were used to compare groups. Results: Direct operating cost data at NYU Health Campuses demonstrated RSG was associated with 4% higher total charges, due to higher OR charges, robotic-specific supplies, and more post-op ED visits. Conclusions: RSG was associated with higher overall hospital charges compared to LSG, though there are multiple contributing factors. More research is needed to identify cost saving measures. This study is retrospective in nature, and does not include indirect costs nor reimbursement. Direct operating costs, per contractual agreement with suppliers, are only given as percentages. Data are limited to 30-day follow-up.

Children should engage in at least 60 min of physical activity daily to develop or maintain healthy habits (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021a). Previous research suggests that contingent attention is a powerful tool for increasing moderate to vigorous physical activity. In this study, the researchers examined the effects of a group game on steps per minute at recess in an inclusive classroom with preschoolers. The researcher taught the game called the T‐Rex game in which the game rules (chasing students who were moving) involved contingencies for natural attention to follow moderate to vigorous physical activity. The results showed a functional relation between step count and the group game in which students engaged in higher step counts when the group game was in place than during baseline. These findings extend other work by demonstrating that contingent attention embedded in group games can increase step count.

Outcomes in adulthood for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are poor in every area assessed (e.g., postsecondary education, employment, living arrangements, health and safety). As such, it is critical that interventions target the best outcomes across the lifespan and improve the overall quality of life. Given that targeting meaningful skill-acquisition goals can help affect positive changes in these outcomes, the intention of this paper was to conduct a systematic literature review of the research examining what has been done to improve the quality of goals written by educational and behavior analytic practitioners. However, the literature review yielded so few references that the focus of this paper shifted to an examination of available assessment and curriculum tools that help practitioners to write meaningful goals. Implications and recommendations for guiding clinical practice and research questions are discussed.T

Just as baptism holds within it the possibility and even promise of life, new birth, suffering, and death, so too does its ordinary element of water: in it is the full, embodied, and vulnerable reach of life and death. In the waters of baptism is the promise of new life, but not a life absent suffering, risk, or moral complexity. This essay presents a baptismally-grounded practical theological reflection upon the precarious status of baptism’s central element, water, in a time of extreme weather, economic exploitation, and depleting stores of fresh water.

Dressing is an important skill for students with developmental disabilities, so they rely less on caregivers and build independence. Research evaluating dressing skills instruction commonly uses some type of graduated guidance to teach the skill. In this study, three students receiving special education services under autism eligibility had already received instruction on dressing skills using graduated guidance. Although this procedure was enough to teach the dressing steps (including putting on the clothing), it was not sufficient in teaching the student to put on the clothing with the correct orientation. Thus, these students walked out of the bathroom wearing clothes that were inside out and/or backward. We placed a 12-cm red stimulus prompt on the target clothing item and evaluated the effects on correct dressing orientation for these three students using a multiple probe design. For all three students, the stimulus prompt increased accuracy, and for two participants, accuracy was maintained. For the two students who maintained the skill, we systematically faded the tag, and they maintained perfect dressing orientation.

AbstractObjective:To assess the impact of a 24-hour autocancellation of uncollected Clostridioides difficilesamples in reducing reported healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).Design:Quality-improvement, before-and-after implementation study.Setting:The study was conducted in 17 hospitals in Pennsylvania.Interventions:Clostridioides difficiletests that are not collected within 24 hours are automatically canceled (“autocancel”) through the electronic health record. The intervention took place at 2 facilities (intervention period November 2021–July 2022) and subsequently at 15 additional facilities (April 2022–July 2022). Quality measures included percentage of orders canceled, C. difficileHAI rate, percent positivity of completed tests, and potential adverse outcomes of canceled or delayed testing.Results:Of 6,101 orders, 1,090 (17.9%) were automatically canceled after not being collected for 24 hours during the intervention periods. The reported C. difficileHAI rates per 10,000 patient days did not significantly change. These rates were 8.07 in the 6-month preintervention period and 8.77 in the intervention period for facilities A and B combined (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.09; 95% CI, 0.88–1.34; P= .43), and were 5.23 HAIs per 10,000 patient days in the 6-month preintervention period and 5.33 in the intervention period for facilities C–Q combined (IRR, 1.02; 95% CI, 0.79–1.32; P =.87). From the preintervention to the intervention periods, the percent positivity rates of completed C. difficiletests increased by 1.1% for facilities A and B and by 1.4% for facilities C–Q. No adverse outcomes were observed.Conclusions:The 24-hour autocancellation of uncollected C. difficileorders reduced testing but did not result in reported HAI reduction.
