Predictors of metastases for small renal masses (SRMs) represent an unmet medical need. Leveraging a large renal cell carcinoma database, a histologic ontology framework, prospective BAP1 expression analyses, and patient-derived tumorgraft models, we show that metastasizing SRMs are characterized by aggressive morphologic phenotypes, BAP1 loss, and high rates of engraftment in mice.
