This article provides an overview of flood risk management in the United States, focusing on the National Flood Insurance Program and the Community Ratings System (CRS), which is designed to promote flood hazard mitigation. We review the empirical literature that examines market penetration and demand for flood insurance, as well as factors that influence community participation in CRS. Combining data from separate (but similar) surveys conducted in Dare County, North Carolina in 1998 and 2008, we examine trends in flood insurance holdings and explore the extensive (binary participation) and intensive (coverage level) margins using regression analysis. We explore trends in CRS mitigation activities in Dare County and discuss potential difficulties in analyzing these data. Finally, we highlight avenues for future research.

Objectives:Although grape has been recently the topic of many investigations, Maviz(a kind of dried one) has remained neglected. The aim of this study was to assess anti-Alzheimer activity of Maviz.Methods:To reach this goal, total phenolic content (TPC) of ethanolic (Eth) and aqueous (Aq) extracts were determined and radical scavenging activity was assayed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Chemical compositions of each extract were also determined via GC-Mass. Behavioral changes were studied via passive avoidance and Morris water maze in Aβ-induced model of Alzheimer's disease. Catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) determination were also done on rats’ hippocampus.Results:The results showed that seed Eth extract has a high level of TPC and radical scavenging activity. However, this extract had surprisingly no effect on memory and CAT and SOD activities. In contrast, fruit Aq and Eth extracts (containing furfurals as major compounds) inhibited memory impairment (P < 0.001) and elevated brain levels of CAT and SOD(P < 0.05).Conclusion:It seems that Maviznon-phenolic compounds-most probably 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and other similar derivatives-are responsible for these actions.

Methamphetamine (MA) induces neurocognitive effects via several mechanisms. In the present study, we investigated the alteration of thyroid hormone receptor’s expression in the context of MA-induced memory impairment and explored the protective effects of exogenous thyroid hormones (THs). Male wistar rats, received increasing regime of MA (1-10mg/kg, intraperitoneal, twice a day for 10 days), were treated with T3 (40μg/rat/day; intranasal, 2.5μl/nostril) or T4 (20µg/kg/day; intraperitoneal) for 7 days after MA cessation. All rats were subjected to novel object recognition memory test and then the mRNA levels of TH nuclear receptors (TRα1 and TRβ1) and seladin-1, an anti-apoptotic factor, and the protein level of TH cell surface receptor (integrin αvβ3) were measured in the hippocampus of rats. Our results showed that MA-induced memory impairment is concomitant with decreased level of TRα1 mRNA. T3 or T4 treatment significantly alleviated MA-induced memory impairment, but had no significant effect on the mRNA levels of TH nuclear receptors. However, T4 treatment significantly increased the protein level of cell surface receptor (av subunit) in MA-treated rats. These findings suggest that MA neurocognitive effects can be associated with impaired TH signaling in the brain and introduce this pathway as a promising therapeutic approach against MA-induced memory impairment.

Changes in vascular responsiveness are the basis for some of the cardiovascular complications in cholestasis. Since the duration of cholestasis is important in determining the degree of the complications, we investigated the time-course dependent evolution of vascular relaxation responsiveness in the aortic rings of cholestatic rats. Acetylcholine-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation was investigated in the isolated aortic rings of unoperated, sham-operated and two-, five-, seven- and fourteen-day bile-duct ligated rats. There was a significant reduction in acetylcholine-induced relaxation of the aortic rings by the second day after the bile-duct ligation operation, compared to those of unoperated and sham-operated groups, but more reduction still occurs in 5- and 7-day bile-duct ligated groups, reaching a plateau by the seventh day. The relaxation response to sodium nitroprusside in the aortic rings of the unoperated and the 7-day bile-duct ligated rats did not differ, implying the intact smooth muscle component of the relaxation pathway. l-NAME ( N( ω)- nitro-l-arginine methyl ester), a nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, attenuated the acetylcholine-induced relaxation in both groups (unoperated and bile-duct ligated), while l-arginine prevents this inhibitory effect. Indomethacin potentiated the acetylcholine-induced relaxation in the aortic rings of the bile-duct ligated rats while it has no effect on unoperated controls, providing evidence for the possible role of vasoconstrictor prostanoids in cholestasis-induced reduction in acetylcholine-induced relaxation. These results state that the reduced acetylcholine-induced relaxation in the cholestatic aortic rings during the first week, when no portal hypertension was reported to be present, may be due to the decreased acetylcholine-induced NO release from endothelium or increased NO inactivation.

The rate and degree of subsensitivity development to morphine (mu-opioid receptor, preferred, but not selective agonist) and U50488H (highly selective kappa-opioid receptor agonist) were assessed in vitro on guinea pig ileum (GPI) of cholestatic animals 2, 5, and 7 days after bile duct ligation. In addition to this phenomenon of morphine, the effects of U50488H and SNC 80 (highly selective delta-opioid receptor agonist) were studied in vitro on mice vas deferens (MVD) of cholestatic animals 2, 5, 7, 10, and 15 days after bile duct ligation. The IC(50) for each compound was determined in these preparations. The ratio of the IC(50) in bile duct-ligated animals to sham and control animals provides a quantitative index for the degree of subsensitivity development to each agonist. For any given time, the highest degree of subsensitivity to morphine was observed in GPI of cholestatic animals, whereas in MVD obtained from the cholestatic animals, the highest degree of subsensitivity developed to inhibitory effect of SNC 80. The subsensitivity development in cholestatic animals was time dependent; in GPI the maximum subsensitivity developed after 7 days of the operation, whereas the maximum subsensitivity in MVD developed 15 days after bile duct ligation. Moreover, subsensitivity to exogenous acetylcholine and norepinephrine in GPI and MVD, respectively, did not develop in the presence of subsensitivity to opioids in cholestatic animals. Significant accumulation of endogenous opioids in plasma of cholestatic animals has been shown in several studies and this may account for a significant development of subsensitivity to inhibitory effects of opioid agonists.

AbstractThe essential oil of the aerial parts of Trigonella foenum-graecumhas been studied by means of GC and GC/MS. The main components of the oil were found to be ω-cadinene (27.6%), α-cadinol (12.1%), γ-eudesmol (11.2%) and α-bisabolol (10.5%).
