1. The OHStat Guidelines for Reporting Observational Studies and Clinical Trials in Oral Health Research: explanation and elaboration

Abstract: Adequate and transparent reporting is necessary for critically appraising research. Yet, evidence suggests that the design, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of oral health research could be greatly improved. Accordingly, the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research—statisticians and trialists from academia and industry—empaneled a group of authors to develop methodological and statistical reporting guidelines identifying the minimum information needed to document and evaluate observational studies and clinical trials in oral health: the OHstat Guidelines. Drafts were circulated to the editors of 85 oral health journals and to Task Force members and sponsors and discussed at a December 2020 workshop attended by 49 researchers. The final version was subsequently approved by the Task Force in September 2021, submitted for journal review in 2022, and revised in 2023. The checklist consists of 48 guidelines: 5 for introductory information, 17 for methods, 13 for statistical analysis, 6 for results, and 7 for interpretation; 7 are specific to clinical trials. Each of these guidelines identifies relevant information, explains its importance, and often describes best practices. The checklist was published in multiple journals. The article was published simultaneously in JDR Clinical and Translational Research,the Journal of the American Dental Association,and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.Completed checklists should accompany manuscripts submitted for publication to these and other oral health journals to help authors, journal editors, and reviewers verify that the manuscript provides the information necessary to adequately document and evaluate the research.

2. The OHStat Guidelines for Reporting Observational Studies and Clinical Trials in Oral Health Research: manuscript checklist

Abstract: Adequate and transparent reporting is necessary for critically appraising published research. Yet, ample evidence suggests that the design, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of oral health research could be greatly improved. Accordingly, the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research—statisticians and trialists from academia and industry—identified the minimum information needed to report and evaluate observational studies and clinical trials in oral health: the OHStat Guidelines. Drafts were circulated to the editors of 85 oral health journals and to Task Force members and sponsors and discussed at a December 2020 workshop attended by 49 researchers. The guidelines were subsequently revised by the Task Force’s writing group. The guidelines draw heavily from the Consolidated Standards for Reporting Trials (CONSORT), Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE), and CONSORT harms guidelines and incorporate the SAMPL guidelines for reporting statistics, the CLIP principles for documenting images, and the GRADE indicating the quality of evidence. The guidelines also recommend reporting estimates in clinically meaningful units using confidence intervals, rather than relying on P values. In addition, OHStat introduces 7 new guidelines that concern the text itself, such as checking the congruence between abstract and text, structuring the discussion, and listing conclusions to make them more specific. OHStat does not replace other reporting guidelines; it incorporates those most relevant to dental research into a single document. Manuscripts using the OHStat guidelines will provide more information specific to oral health research.

3. Pegcetacoplan Treatment and Consensus Features of Geographic Atrophy Over 24 Months

Abstract: IMPORTANCE: Despite widespread availability and consensus on its advantages for detailed imaging of geographic atrophy (GA), spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) might benefit from automated quantitative OCT analyses in GA diagnosis, monitoring, and reporting of its landmark clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between pegcetacoplan and consensus GA SD-OCT end points. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a post hoc analysis of 11 614 SD-OCT volumes from 936 of the 1258 participants in 2 parallel phase 3 studies, the Study to Compare the Efficacy and Safety of Intravitreal APL-2 Therapy With Sham Injections in Patients With Geographic Atrophy (GA) Secondary to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (OAKS) and Study to Compare the Efficacy and Safety of Intravitreal APL-2 Therapy With Sham Injections in Patients With Geographic Atrophy (GA) Secondary to Age-Related Macular Degeneration (DERBY). OAKS and DERBY were 24-month, multicenter, randomized, double-masked, sham-controlled studies conducted from August 2018 to July 2020 among adults with GA with total area 2.5 to 17.5 mm2 on fundus autofluorescence imaging (if multifocal, at least 1 lesion ≥1.25 mm2). This analysis was conducted from September to December 2023. INTERVENTIONS: Study participants received pegcetacoplan, 15 mg per 0.1-mL intravitreal injection, monthly or every other month, or sham injection monthly or every other month. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary end point was the least squares mean change from baseline in area of retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy in each of the 3 treatment arms (pegcetacoplan monthly, pegcetacoplan every other month, and pooled sham [sham monthly and sham every other month]) at 24 months. Feature-specific area analysis was conducted by Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) regions of interest (ie, foveal, parafoveal, and perifoveal). RESULTS: Among 936 participants, the mean (SD) age was 78.5 (7.22) years, and 570 participants (60.9%) were female. Pegcetacoplan, but not sham treatment, was associated with reduced growth rates of SD-OCT biomarkers for GA for up to 24 months. Reductions vs sham in least squares mean (SE) change from baseline of retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal atrophy area were detectable at every time point from 3 through 24 months (least squares mean difference vs pooled sham at month 24, pegcetacoplan monthly: −0.86 mm2; 95% CI, −1.15 to −0.57; P < .001; pegcetacoplan every other month: −0.69 mm2; 95% CI, −0.98 to −0.39; P < .001). This association was more pronounced with more frequent dosing (pegcetacoplan monthly vs pegcetacoplan every other month at month 24: −0.17 mm2; 95% CI, −0.43 to 0.08; P = .17). Stronger associations were observed in the parafoveal and perifoveal regions for both pegcetacoplan monthly and pegcetacoplan every other month. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: These findings offer additional insight into the potential effects of pegcetacoplan on the development of GA, including potential effects on the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors. 4. Investigation of Hydrogen Embrittlement Effect on Microstructure Mechanical Properties and Fracture of Low-Carbon Steels

Abstract: Steel hydrogen embrittlement (HE), a complex and multifaceted issue, can lead to sudden and catastrophic failure, without significant plastic deformation, making it a critical concern in the industrial sector. The present investigation focuses on the evaluation of HE effects regarding microstructure, mechanical properties degradation and type of fracture of AISI 1010 low-carbon steel, after accelerated hydrogen cathodic charging. Hydrogen was diffused electrolytically in 0.2 Μ H2SO4 solution, containing 3g/L of NH4SCN, using a cathodic current density of 10 and 20 mA/cm2, for 6 and 18 h. Mechanical properties were investigated through slow-rate tensile tests, as well as Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact tests, to determine the value of fracture toughness, both in uncharged and electrochemically pre-charged specimens. Vickers microhardness tests were conducted on the cross-sections of the hydrogen charged samples to evaluate embrittlement susceptibility, due to the presence of dissolved hydrogen. The microstructure modification was carried out through light optical (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in conjunction with an energy-dispersive X-ray detector (EDS). Slow scan X-ray diffraction (SSXRD) was also conducted for crystal structure analysis. The microstructure analysis showed the presence of large amounts of secondary cracks and cavities into the steel matrix, due to hydrogen diffusion and its accumulation at various sites. Hydrogen charging caused a significant gradual elongation decrease of the parent material, from 25% to 6.73%, in case of embrittlement at 20 mA/cm2 for 18h. Accordingly, after 18 h of exposure, the impact energy decrement was determined at 31.5%, at a current density of 10 mA/cm2, whereas the corresponding reduction at 20 mA/cm2 reached 68%.

6. Copper contribution on microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar gas tungsten arc welded Ti–6Al–4V to Inconel® X-750

Abstract: Dissimilar metal welding (DMW) between titanium alloys and nickel-based superalloys can contribute to acquiring light, heat-resistant frameworks of enhanced efficiency. The current study constitutes an attempt to obtain joints between a Ni-superalloy and a Ti-alloy, investigating the beneficial impact of copper on the microstructure of the weld metal (WM), through precipitation of ternary Ti–Ni–Cu intermetallic compounds (IMCs), instead of Ni–Ti ones, previously reported in weldments between such alloys. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) was performed between Ti–6Al–4V and Inconel® X-750, varying the welding current and using different copper filler wires (pure Cu and NiCu). The microstructural characterization of weldments was conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and a further nanoscale examination was performed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Identification of IMCs and precipitates was achieved by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the mechanical properties were investigated through microhardness Vickers measurements. Crack-free joints were obtained, albeit with the presence of IMCs comprising Ti–Ni, Ti–Cu, and Ti–Ni–Cu, as well as titanium carbides (TiCs). Cu exhibited a positive influence on the joints’ microstructure. Elevating the welding current led to accelerated cooling and solidification rates, resulting in enhanced Vickers microhardness values. This phenomenon can be attributed to either the formation of finer microstructures or the precipitation of brittle IMCs, which were observed in specimens welded with higher currents. Especially near the Ti-alloy interface, it was found that a brazing-type bond took place instead of welding, while high hardness values (up to 800 HV) were also detected.

7. Hodgkin Lymphoma in Children and Adolescents of Northern Greece: 25-Year Results and Long-term Follow-up

Abstract: Aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term therapeutic outcome and treatment-related complications in Hodgkin disease. We reviewed the medical records of 93 patients diagnosed with classic Hodgkin lymphoma, treated, and followed-up during the last 25 years. The cohort study included 49 males and 44 females with median age 11.8 years old (range: 3.95 to 17.42 y). The most common subtype was nodular sclerosis in 47/93 (50.5%). B symptoms were present in 15/93 (16.1%). From January 2009 until December 2020, 55 (59%) patients diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma were treated according to European Network for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma (EURONET)-PHL-C1 protocol. Concerning outcome, a total of 89/93 patients are alive. Relapse occurred in 7/93. Second malignancies are reported in a total of 5 patients, 3 solid tumors (thyroid cancer, breast cancer, and osteosarcoma), and 2 acute myeloid leukemias. The overall survival and event-free survival for the whole cohort were 95.7% and 83.9%, respectively. Disease-free survival was 92.5%. Although a considerable high fraction of patients with Hodgkin disease can achieve continuous complete remission, they are at a high risk of developing long-term treatment-related complications. High curative rates as well as prevention of late effects can be achieved by implementation of individualized treatment strategies and innovative treatments.

8. Bonding Characteristics of Grey Cast Iron and Microalloyed Steel Using Furnace Brazing

Abstract: The present research work focuses on the study of the microstructure evolution, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties of GG25 grey cast iron and AISI 4140 microalloyed steel dissimilar brazing joints, using a eutectic type Ag-based filler metal. The welding zone microstructure study was carried out through optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in conjunction with an energy-dispersive X-ray detector (EDS). Joints’ mechanical properties were investigated through tensile tests, as well as detecting the Vickers microhardness across the microstructure’s zones. For the assessment of the joints’ corrosion resistance, potentiodynamic polarization tests were performed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, at various temperatures. The corrosion products evaluation was carried out by both X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). According to the results, sound brazing joint was attained, presenting an average tensile strength and ductility of about 230 MPa and 20 %, respectively.

9. Perception of COVID‐19 pandemic restrictions on dental researchers

Abstract: Historical evidence shows a gender‐based disproportionate effect of pandemics across different populations. In 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic began spreading its devastating effects worldwide. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of the COVID‐19 pandemic on research productivity, work‐life arrangements, and mental health of dental professionals worldwide with focus on gender differences. A 38‐item survey, concerning demographics, career stage, employer support, family structure, mental health, and relationships, was distributed to 7692 active members of the International Association for Dental Research. Bivariate associations between independent variables and the primary outcome variable were tested using Spearman's correlation test. A logistic regression model was used to assess the simultaneous, independent associations between each variable and researcher productivity. A total of 722 responses were obtained, indicating a 9.4% response rate. Higher productivity was reported by male respondents (p= 0.021), and by those in senior career stages (p= 0.001). Institutional support was associated with higher productivity (p< 0.0001). Lower productivity was reported by younger researchers (p= 0.003). Remote work negatively affected productivity (p< 0.0001) and female respondents reported working more hours, regardless of work location (p= 0.004). Poor mental health was associated with low productivity (p< 0.0001). Our results showed that the COVID‐19 pandemic significantly affected dental professionals’ perceived productivity and mental health around the globe. Younger individuals and women were disproportionally affected, and institutional support had a significant influence to mitigate effects of the pandemic for dental researchers.

Abstract: Ewing sarcoma (ES), described as a diffuse endothelioma of the bone, is divided into two categories: osseous and extraosseous, which mainly affects adolescents. Extraosseous Ewing Sarcomas (EES) are rare tumors originating from soft tissues. Their clinical presentation depends mainly on the primary location of the tumor and are highly chemosensitive and radiosensitive. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of 3 children with EES and uncommon presentation treated in our Unit. The diagnosis of EES was confirmed by biopsy and cytogenetic analysis with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Surgical excision was planned as primary treatment, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy according to EURO-E.W.I.N.G protocol. To date, all patients are alive, 1, 3 and 4 years after completion of treatment, with no signs of recurrence or metastasis.

15. Ion Specificity of Confined Ion–Water Structuring and Nanoscale Surface Forces in Clays

Abstract: Ion specificity and related Hofmeister effects, which are ubiquitous in aqueous systems, can have spectacular consequences in hydrated clays, where ion-specific nanoscale surface forces can determine large-scale cohesive swelling and shrinkage behaviors of soil and sediments. We have used a semiatomistic computational approach and examined sodium, calcium, and aluminum counterions confined with water between charged surfaces representative of clay materials to show that ion–water structuring in nanoscale confinement is at the origin of surface forces between clay particles which are intrinsically ion-specific. When charged surfaces strongly confine ions and water, the amplitude and oscillations of the net pressure naturally emerge from the interplay of electrostatics and steric effects, which cannot be captured by existing theories. Increasing confinement and surface charge densities promote ion–water structures that increasingly deviate from the ions’ bulk hydration shells, being strongly anisotropic, persistent, and self-organizing into optimized, nearly solid-like assemblies where hardly any free water is left. Under these conditions, strongly attractive interactions can prevail between charged surfaces because of the dramatically reduced dielectric screening of water and the highly organized water–ion structures. By unravelling the ion-specific nature of these nanoscale interactions, we provide evidence that ion-specific solvation structures determined by confinement are at the origin of ion specificity in clays and potentially a broader range of confined aqueous systems.

Abstract: ABSTRACTThe current paper presents the recontextualization process of ethnographic narratives collected during the five-year research project GRECO ‘Language and identity among Romeika speakers in Cyprus’, into a participatory performance at the Nicosia Buffer Fringe Performing Arts Festival 2019. The project focused on the narratives of Romeika speakers, a sub-group of Turkish Cypriots who had Greek and not Turkish as a home language. The paper focuses on the theoretical concepts of performance and ethnography to describe the way a group of researchers, students and artists engaged in a dialogic process with raw data and transformed it into a fully-fledged participatory performance. The project and the festival are described as two sites of crossings in the heavily politicized context of Cyprus, where issues of identity and language, space and belonging are contested in a constant processing of othering. The process of formulating narratives into performance text is presented through five different stages: narratives, dialogicality/agency, space/multiple contexts, embodiment, performance. The project’s outcome, an interactive performance, served to challenge the dominant discourses on the binarity of space, identity and border, both in the local context of Cyprus and in other contexts of conflict and borders.

Abstract: Prevalence of Grade C molar incisor periodontitis (C/MIP) in females (F) and males (M) is controversial, although some studies suggest higher prevalence in females. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences in clinical parameters, and levels of cyto/chemokines in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and peripheral blood response. GCF and blood were collected from 79 C/MIP African‐American participants (53F and 26 M) and healthy controls (58F and 38 M), aged 5 to 23. Blood was stimulated with ultrapure LPS from Escherichia coli(Ec) and Porphyromonas gingivalis(Pg) and we quantified levels of 14 cyto/chemokines. Clinical parameters were collected before and 12 months following treatment No clinical parameters or age differences were found between males and females, although age was negatively correlated with response to treatment. GCF levels of TNFα, IFNγ, MIP1α, and MCP1 from diseased and sites and healthy sites IFNγ levels were higher in M (P< 0.05). C/MIP females presented higher Pgand EcLPS induced levels of Eotaxin, IFNγ, and GMCSF (P< 0.05), whereas healthy males presented higher EcLPS induced levels of Eotaxin and IFNγ (P< 0.05). Inflammatory profiles were also different among genders in disease (P= 0.004). Although males seemed to present few elevated inflammatory markers in the GCF in disease and in health, females presented an elevated systemic inflammatory response to LPS in disease, which indicates a possible differential susceptibility to inflammation. Future studies need to determine if sex hormones have a role in the peripheral host response and in the pathogenesis of C/MIP.

Abstract: From early April 2020, wildfires raged in the highly contaminated areas around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (CNPP), Ukraine. For about 4 weeks, the fires spread around and into the Chernobyl exclusion zone (CEZ) and came within a few kilometers of both the CNPP and radioactive waste storage facilities. Wildfires occurred on several occasions throughout the month of April. They were extinguished, but weather conditions and the spread of fires by airborne embers and smoldering fires led to new fires starting at different locations of the CEZ. The forest fires were only completely under control at the beginning of May, thanks to the tireless and incessant work of the firefighters and a period of sustained precipitation. In total, 0.7–1.2 TBq 137Cs were released into the atmosphere. Smoke plumes partly spread south and west and contributed to the detection of airborne 137Cs over the Ukrainian territory and as far away as Western Europe. The increase in airborne 137Cs ranged from several hundred μBq·m–3in northern Ukraine to trace levels of a few μBq·m–3or even within the usual background level in other European countries. Dispersion modeling determined the plume arrival time and was helpful in the assessment of the possible increase in airborne 137Cs concentrations in Europe. Detections of airborne 90Sr (emission estimate 345–612 GBq) and Pu (up to 75 GBq, mostly 241Pu) were reported from the CEZ. Americium-241 represented only 1.4% of the total source term corresponding to the studied anthropogenic radionuclides but would have contributed up to 80% of the inhalation dose.

Abstract: Abstract:Documenting Byzantine and post-Byzantine music sources in an online MARC-based system tailored to accommodate bibliographic and authority metadata primarily of Western art music is an unprecedented endeavor. The effort requires reliable information and methodical procedures to locate the music sources; it entails different expertise to analyse and identify the music pieces; it involves certain skills to organise the thesaurus of new terms extracted from the music manuscripts, and it involves deep knowledge of encoding music metadata. Additionally, the enrichment of the host institutions’ authority records, with the purpose of expressing more attributes and relationships, is considered necessary, in order to create a functional guide serving as a prior stage to locate fonds-and-collections-related information in the database.To accomplish all of the above, the customisation and further development of the software is essential, with the aim of handling metadata according to current bibliographic and authority data models, and as a result, to respond effectively to the user’s needs.This article refers to certain pilot projects undertaken by the Greek RISM Office using MUSCAT, RISM’s central cataloguing program. Notwendig ist auch die spezielle Expertise, Musikstücke zu analysieren und zu identifizieren, die Fähigkeit, einen Thesaurus mit neuen Begriffen zu organisieren, die aus den Musikmanuskripten abgeleitet wurden sowie -nicht zuletzt -ein fundiertes Wissen über die Kodierung von Musikmetadaten. Darüber hinaus wird die Anreicherung der Normdatensätze um mehr Attribute und Beziehungen durch die teilnehmenden Institutionen als essenziell angesehen, damit ein funktionaler Leitfaden entsteht, der als Einstiegsmöglichkeit zum Auffinden von bestands-und sammlungsbezogenen Informationen in der Datenbank dient.Dafür ist die Anpassung und Weiterentwicklung der Software unabdingbar und dient dem Ziel, Metadaten nach aktuellen bibliografischen und Normdatenmodellen bearbeiten zu können und damit effektiv auf die Bedürfnisse der Nutzer einzugehen.25Dieser Artikel bezieht sich auf bestimmte, vom griechischen RISM-Büro durchgeführte Pilot-projekte, bei denen MUSCAT, das zentrale Katalogisierungsprogramm von RISM, genutzt wurde. 24. Parenting Practices, Victimization, and Negative Affectivity in Child Internalizing Symptoms: Moderated-Mediation Models

Abstract: Separate lines of research have linked negative parenting practices, victimization, and negative affectivity - separately - with internalizing symptoms in children. However, no previous studies have connected these lines of research to examine internalizing pathology in children. The current study tested complex moderated-mediation models to investigate the respective effects of victimization and negative affectivity on the relationship between parenting practices and internalizing symptoms. Greek-Cypriot children (N = 374) and their parents took part in the study. The children completed the Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire, the Negative Affect Scale for Children, and the Parental Bonding Instrument. Their parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist – Parent Report (CBCL). Moderated-mediation models highlighted that negative affectivity moderates the mediating effect of victimization on the relationship between parenting practices and internalizing symptoms. The research findings contribute to the existing literature and advance our understanding of children’s internalizing symptoms development. Implications and future directions are discussed.

25. Antibiotic prescribing at a periodontal residency practice in Connecticut

Abstract: Antibiotics are important in the treatment of odontogenic infections and the prevention of infection following dental procedures in high‐risk situations. Little is known about antibiotic prescribing in periodontal practice. This study describes prescribing practices by periodontal faculty and residents in an academic setting in order to identify opportunities to optimize prescribing behaviors. This cross‐sectional study analyzed all antibiotic prescriptions from residents or faculty in an academic periodontal clinic from 2014‐2017. Information was manually extracted from the electronic health record. Antibiotic prescriptions were stratified into three indication categories: pre‐procedural prophylaxis, post‐procedural prophylaxis, and treatment. Out of 275 prescriptions analyzed, 266 met inclusion criteria. The most frequent antibiotic indication was post‐procedural prophylaxis (n = 130, 48.87%). Amoxicillin was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic across all groups (n = 236, 88.72%), followed by clindamycin (n = 22, 8.27%). Most patients presented in a non‐emergent setting (n = 200, 75.19%), without pain (n = 210, 78.95%), and had restorative/endodontic‐related clinical findings (n = 55, 20.68%). Among the 35 patients receiving antibiotics for infection treatment, 8 (22.86%) underwent a surgical intervention on the date of antibiotic prescription. Of the 130 patients receiving post‐procedural prophylaxis, 121 (93.08%) received surgical interventions on the day of antibiotic prescription. Antibiotics are prescribed in various situations in periodontal practice, most frequently as post‐procedural prophylaxis, an indication for which data is limited. There is an urgent need to study the role of post‐procedural prophylactic antibiotics and understand antibiotic prescribing in the management of periodontal disease in order to optimize prescribing practices.

Abstract: In a time, where first solid oxide based systems enter demonstration and commercial markets, the European NewSOC project focuses on next generations. It aims at significantly improving performance, durability, and cost competitiveness of solid oxide cells and stacks compared to state-of-the-art (SoA). In order to achieve these goals, NewSOC investigates twelve innovative concepts in the following areas: (i) structural optimization and innovative architectures based on SoA materials, (ii) alternative materials, which allow for overcoming inherent challenges of SoA, (iii) innovative manufacturing to reduce critical raw materials and reduction of environmental footprint at improved performance and lifetime. The NewSOC unifies competences of 16 strong research and industry players. First scientific highlights were achieved despite the challenging working conditions under the European wide Covid-19 restrictions in the first year of the project. The presentation will provide a selection of these highlights.

Abstract: “Home” describes an intangible concept. It is the emotional and meaningful relationship between people and their familiar environment. In living conditions of individuation, temporariness and mobility, personal possessions gain utmost importance in the establishment of a sense of “home”. They become material icons of durability and continuity in everyday life which carry references to people, places, the past and, most importantly, to oneself – one’s identity and history. Home No. 7 (a sample of)is a practice-led study of this hypothesis. The project attempts to record and maintain a sample of a domestic interior – once regarded as “home” – created in the North Room on 262 Bethnal Green Road at the time it was about to be dismantled. The sample of ‘home’ is contained within a box. The interior of the box is divided into compartments, each of which holds a different means of registration: casts, cards, photos, samples, drawings and texts. The quasi-scientific way of registration aims at a clear presentation of the information recorded and an objective point of view. Yet, these means of objective recording inadvertently reveal personal systems of reference created by the inhabitant. The text that accompanies and reflects on the project discusses the relationship between an individual and his/her personal possessions drawing from the fields of anthropology, philosophy, history, critical theory and studies of material culture. Project and text attempt to understand the material “at home” constructed by one’s personal possessions and the immaterial “at home” created by their relationship to their owner.

31. Determinants of low uptake of vaccination against influenza, measles, and hepatitis B among healthcare professionals in Greece: a multicenter cross-sectional study

Abstract: ABSTRACTVaccination is recommended for healthcare professionals (HCPs) to protect them against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs); however, uptake rates are low. This study aimed to evaluate HCPs’ influenza, hepatitis B, and measles vaccine uptake in all healthcare levels in Crete, Greece. We conducted a questionnaire–based, cross-sectional multicenter study in 2018, including HCPs employed at 18 primary care centers and 3 hospitals. Overall, 2,246 HCPs responded (57.2% of the target population). The influenza vaccine uptake rate was 36.1% (810/2,246), with the annual vaccination rate at 14.8% (332/2,246) over the previous 5 years. Concurrently, the hepatitis B 3-dose vaccine uptake rate was 60.3% (1,316/2,181). Among the participating HCPs, 70.7% (1,457/2,061) had measles immunity due to previous illness (959/2,061, 46.5%), a 2-dose vaccination scheme (461/2,061, 22.4%), or serological confirmation (37/2,061, 1.8%). Vaccine uptake rates differed between groups depending on age, profession, and workplace setting. Logistic regression analysis revealed that risk factors for no influenza vaccine uptake during the previous season were younger age (≤45 years; odds ratio [OR] 1.35, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08–1.66), profession other than physician (OR 2.94, 95%CI: 2.09–4.12), and working in hospitals (OR 1.39, 95%CI 1.02–1.89). Older age (>45 years) was an independent risk factor for not receiving a measles (OR 26.74, 95%CI: 17.41–41.06) or hepatitis B vaccine (OR 1.36, 95%CI 1.09–1.7). Working in primary care was an independent risk factor for not getting a hepatitis B vaccine (OR 1.52, 95%CI: 1.15–2.1). Our findings indicate that individualized and targeted interventions should be implemented to increase vaccine uptake among HCPs.

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed an increasing scholarly interest in the study of education, training, and skill formation from a comparative political economy perspective. The purpose of this article is to contribute to the emerging field of the political economy of adult learning systems, which seeks to understand the causes and consequences of cross-national diversity in adult learning systems. The article introduces this interdisciplinary research strand by reviewing recent work and different typologies that have emerged out of the field of comparative economics and comparative politics, which are relevant to the study of adult learning systems. The empirical evidence on cross-national patterns of organized adult learning drawn on PIAAC data suggests that existing typologies are insufficient to explain the cross-national patterns. The article discusses some specific institutional features that promote adult learning participation and points out conditions and policies that support effective adult learning systems.

Abstract: Astrocytes take up glucose from the bloodstream to provide energy to the brain, thereby allowing neuronal activity and behavioural responses1–5. By contrast, astrocytes are under neuronal control through specific neurotransmitter receptors5–7. However, whether the activation of astroglial receptors can directly regulate cellular glucose metabolism to eventually modulate behavioural responses is unclear. Here we show that activation of mouse astroglial type-1 cannabinoid receptors associated with mitochondrial membranes (mtCB1) hampers the metabolism of glucose and the production of lactate in the brain, resulting in altered neuronal functions and, in turn, impaired behavioural responses in social interaction assays. Specifically, activation of astroglial mtCB1receptors reduces the phosphorylation of the mitochondrial complex I subunit NDUFS4, which decreases the stability and activity of complex I. This leads to a reduction in the generation of reactive oxygen species by astrocytes and affects the glycolytic production of lactate through the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 pathway, eventually resulting in neuronal redox stress and impairment of behavioural responses in social interaction assays. Genetic and pharmacological correction of each of these effects abolishes the effect of cannabinoid treatment on the observed behaviour. These findings suggest that mtCB1receptor signalling can directly regulate astroglial glucose metabolism to fine-tune neuronal activity and behaviour in mice.

37. Heterogeneous Surface Growth and Gelation of Cement Hydrates

Abstract: During cement hydration, C–S–H nanoparticles precipitate and form a porous and heterogeneous gel that glues together the hardened product. C–S–H nucleation and growth are driven by dissolution of the cement grains, posing the question of how cement grain surfaces induce spatial heterogeneities in the formation of C–S–H and affect the overall microstructure of the final gel. We develop a model to examine the link between these spatial gradients in C–S–H density and the time-evolving effective interactions between the nanoparticles. Using a combination of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations, we generate the 3D microstructure of the C–S–H gel. The gel network is analyzed in terms of percolation, internal stresses, and anisotropy, and we find that all of these are affected by the heterogeneous C–S–H growth. Further analysis of the pore structure encompassed by the C–S–H networks shows that the pore size distributions and the tortuosity of the pore space show spatial gradients and anisotropy induced by the cement grain surfaces. Specific features in the effective interactions that emerge during hydration are, however, observed to limit the anisotropies in the structure. Finally, the scattering intensity and specific surface area are computed from the simulations in order to connect to the experimental methods of probing the cement microstructure.

The data collected from kindergarten formal education and the home environment via observations and voice recordings suggest that children socialise in their activities by making use of both varieties and their decisive factor in terms of favouring one more than the other is not merely space (class versus home) but also the topics involved in the interaction and the values attached to these which seem to be expressed via habitual linguistic practices.

Abstract: Ciliates are unicellular protists of the phylum Ciliophora and found in high abundances in water systems world-wide. Today their important ecological role in all aquatic systems is well known. However, morphological species identification in ciliates is difficult due to sometimes tiny morphological characteristics. We here present a simplified method visualizing all important species classification patterns. We focused on species identification in the genusEuplotesusing immunocytochemistry and confocal laser scanning microscopy. With these tools, we identify and describe the shape of the interphase macronucleus, the number and distribution of the ventral cirri as well as the species-specific body surface tubulin pattern. We visualize and describe three species difficult to distinguish:Euplotes octocarinatus,Euplotes aediculatusandEuplotes daidaleos. Species identification was subsequently validated with the help of 18S rDNA genome sequencing. We anticipate that this method can also be applied for the identification of different ciliate species in a cost and time effective manner.

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is the most rapidly growing cardiovascular condition with an estimated prevalence of >37.7 million individuals globally. HF is associated with increased mortality and morbidity and confers a substantial burden, in terms of cost and quality of life, for the individuals and the healthcare systems, highlighting thus the need for early and accurate diagnosis of HF. The accuracy of HF diagnosis, severity estimation, and prediction of adverse events has improved by the utilization of blood tests measuring biomarkers. The contribution of biomarkers for HF management is intensified by the fact that they can be measured in short time at the point-of-care. This is allowed by the development of portable analytical devices, commonly known as point-of-care testing (POCT) devices, which exploit the advancements in the area of microfluidics and nanotechnology. The aim of this review paper is to present a review of POCT devices used for the measurement of biomarkers facilitating decision making when managing HF patients. The devices are either commercially available or in the form of prototypes under development. Both blood and saliva samples are considered. The challenges concerning the implementation of POCT devices and the barriers for their adoption in clinical practice are discussed.

Abstract: Prognostic refinement in Fanconi anemia (FA) is needed, especially when considering allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). We studied 20 children with FA and bone marrow failure from a single center. According to Hôpital Saint-Louis risk classification for FA, patients were classified in stage A (no or mild cytopenia/dysplasia), B (single non–high-risk cytogenetic abnormality), C (severe cytopenia and/or significant dysplasia and/or high-risk cytogenetic abnormality), and D (myelodysplastic syndrome with excess of blasts/acute myeloid leukemia) in 4, 2, 13, and 0 cases, respectively. Nine patients received androgens +/− steroids, with a response rate of 30%, and 11 patients underwent HCT. Ten-year cumulative incidence (CI) of myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukemia and overall survival (OS) were 21.9% and 45.3%, respectively, in the entire cohort, whereas cumulative incidence of transplantation-related mortality and OS were 27% and 63%, respectively, in patients who underwent HCT. Patients with significant dysplasia at diagnosis (stages C and D) had significantly shorter OS post-HCT as compared with patients without dysplasia. All patients in stages C and D at diagnosis or during evolution died from their disease. HCT in recent years was associated with more favorable outcomes. Larger cohorts could validate homogenous reporting of risk and help decision-making, particularly for HCT.

45. The OHStat Guidelines for Reporting Observational Studies and Clinical Trials in Oral Health Research: Explanation and Elaboration

Abstract: Adequate and transparent reporting is necessary for critically appraising research. Yet, evidence suggests that the design, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of oral health research could be greatly improved. Accordingly, the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research—statisticians and trialists from academia and industry—empaneled a group of authors to develop methodological and statistical reporting guidelines identifying the minimum information needed to document and evaluate observational studies and clinical trials in oral health: the OHstat Guidelines. Drafts were circulated to the editors of 85 oral health journals and to Task Force members and sponsors and discussed at a December 2020 workshop attended by 49 researchers. The final version was subsequently approved by the Task Force in September 2021, submitted for journal review in 2022, and revised in 2023. The checklist consists of 48 guidelines: 5 for introductory information, 17 for methods, 13 for statistical analysis, 6 for results, and 7 for interpretation; 7 are specific to clinical trials. Each of these guidelines identifies relevant information, explains its importance, and often describes best practices. The checklist was published in multiple journals. The article was published simultaneously in JDR Clinical and Translational Research, the Journal of the American Dental Association, and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Completed checklists should accompany manuscripts submitted for publication to these and other oral health journals to help authors, journal editors, and reviewers verify that the manuscript provides the information necessary to adequately document and evaluate the research.

Abstract: Although a considerable amount of knowledge is gathered concerning diseases and their transmission, still more is to learn on their mathematical modelling. The present work reviews the existent knowledge on models of epidemiological dispersion, the creation of a new form of an epidemiological diffusion equation, and the subsequent application of this equation to the investigation of epidemiological phenomena. Towards that scope, the authors have used mathematical models which have been previously reported, as well as algorithmic approaches of stochastic nature for the solution of complex functions. In particular, they have used dynamic programming algorithms, Robbins-Monro and Kiefer-Wolfowitz stochastic optimization algorithms, Markov chains and cellular automata. The modified diffusion equation could potentially provide a useful tool to the investigation of epidemiological phenomena. More research is required in order to explore the extent of its possibilities and uses.

47. Transition Metal Elements as Ni/GDC Dopants for the H2O Electrolysis Process in SOECs: Fe-Ni vs Au-Mo-Ni Interaction

Abstract: The presented study focuses on the effect of transition metal elements as dopants of the commercial NiO/GDC powder for the Solid Oxide H2O electrolysis. Specifically, the experimental comparison is between Au, Mo and Fe doping. Comparative electrocatalytic measurements with I-V curves and Electrochemical Impedance Spectra (EIS) analysis are presented in the range of 800-900 degC between electrolyte-supported cells with Ni/GDC, 3Au-3Mo-Ni/GDC and 2Fe-Ni/GDC, as the fuel electrode. In summary, the cell comprising the ternary 3Au-3Mo-Ni/GDC electrode performed significantly better while 2wt% Fe-Ni/GDC proved to be not successful. The superior performance of the Au-Mo-Ni ternary sample is primarily ascribed to the enrichment of the surface with Au and of the bulk phase with Mo, through the formation of Ni-Au-Mo solid solution. The involved elements modify the physicochemical properties of the electrode, improving the: (i) H2O re-oxidation rate, (ii) electronic conductivity and (iii) electrochemical interface. In regards to the Fe-doping, it is worth to be stressed that there are key preparation/modification parameters, which can tune the properties of Fe-Ni/GDC as a promising SOEC fuel electrode.

Abstract: Modified X-Ni/GDC electrodes (where X = Au, Mo and Fe) have been studied, in the form of half-electrolyte supported cells, for their performance in the RWGS through catalytic-kinetic measurements. The samples were tested at open circuit potential conditions in order to elucidate their catalytic activity towards the production of CO (rco). The first results revealed that Fe and Mo modification enhances the catalytic production of CO, in the whole studied temperature range (800-900 oC), reaching the thermo-dynamic equilibrium. Recent results from the electrocatalytic investigation on full electrolyte-supported cells are also presented. The derived catalytic profile of the electrodes, is used as a reference towards the distinction of the electro-catalytic pathway for the CO2 reduction. Specifically, it is examined whether co-electrolysis is mainly catalytically/thermodynamically driven or it is a combination of electro- and catalytic processes.

NAS is produced by the N-acetylation of serotonin and is converted to melatonin via the action of Acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT). Like melatonin, NAS acts as an agonist on the melatonin receptors MT1, MT2, and MT3. However, as NAS is abundant in specific brain areas, separate from serotonin and melatonin, it may also have discrete central effects. Indicatively, it has been reported that NAS may play a role in the antidepressant effects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). Objective: To decipher the controlled release characteristics of the active substances (NAS and MT) in a quick initial pace, aiming at a satisfactory sleep-onset related anti-depressive profile and prolonged release, thereafter, targeting at coping with poor sleep quality problems. Methods: A series of hydrophilic matrix tablets involving as excipients, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) K15M, low viscosity sodium alginate, lactose monohydrate, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) M.W.: 10.000 and 55.000) was developed and tested at two dissolution media (pH 1.2 and 7.4). Results: The results showed that commonly used excipients with different physicochemical properties govern the controlled release of NAS and MT from solid matrix systems. Conclusions: We have demonstrated how broadly used excipients affect the in vitro controlled release of NAS and MT from solid pharmaceutical formulations. Currently, we extend our studies on the controlled release of these drugs using various other biopolymers/formulants of different physicochemical characteristics, which will help to highlight the discrete release profiles of NAS and MT.
