In addition, some examples are presented illustrating the main result. Finally, some applications of the main result obtained are given.

AbstractAbies nordmanniana, A. bornmülleriana, A. equi-trojaniand A. cilicica, four native fir species in Turkey, were characterized by means of GC/MS and GC-FID analyses of their needle essential oils. Large amounts of δ-3 carene, present in needles of A. nordmannianaand A. cilicicasubsp. cilicicadifferentiated these species, since this compound is not found in the needles of other Anatolian firs and in those of European counterparts. The percentages of santene and germacrene-D as well as the ratio of percentage of β-pinene to percentage of myrcene can be used to distinguish carene-containing Turkish firs from each other. Remaining West Anatolian fir species (A. bornmülleriana, A. equi-trojaniand A. cilicicasubsp. isaurica)were found to have essential oils of the same qualitative composition. By cluster analysis using SPSS software, the Anatolian firs were divided practically into two groups, characterized by either existence or absence of δ-3 carene in needle extracts.

Fifty-three consecutive children ages 6 to 14 with femur fractures treated with early percutaneous intramedullary fixation were evaluated retrospectively. The operation was performed within 24 hours in 50 patients and in the remainder after 48 hours. All patients were mobilized and allowed full weight-bearing in a functional brace in the early postoperative period. The average hospital stay was 4 days. The average follow-up was 24 months. There were no significant intra- or postoperative complications. An average overgrowth of 1.8 mm was measured using scanogram 24 months after surgery. In the authors' experience, this technique is highly effective for the treatment of children 6 to 14 years old with femur fractures. The main advantages of this method are early weight-bearing, immediate mobilization, short hospitalization, and fewer complications.

Abstract: Background: We compared tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and conventional ultrasonography to determine whether THI improves image quality and facilitates lesion characterization. Methods: Eighty-nine various abdominal or pelvic lesions in 71 patients(34 men and 37 women; age range = 3–90 years, median age = 52 years) were evaluated with conventional ultrasonography and THI. Examinations were performed with frequencies of 2–5 MHz. All the images were stored on a hard disk and evaluated separately by three radiologists. Results: According to the interpreters, THI improved overall image quality in 67 (74%) to 76 (84%) and lesion characterization in 28 (31%) to 36 (40%) of 89 lesions when compared with conventional ultrasonography. All three observers agreed that image quality and lesion characterization were improved in 62% and 17% of the lesions, respectively. Lesion groups containing five or more lesions were compared for any difference of improvement in overall image quality and lesion characterization. For overall image quality, a significant difference was found (p < 0.05). For lesion characterization, there was no significant difference between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: THI improved overall image quality and lesion characterization.

Purpose. To evaluate the vascular hemodynamic changes that can be detected with color Doppler imaging (CDI) in diagnosis, differential diagnosis and prognosis of uveitis with different etiologies including Behçet's disease.Methods. Four groups consisting of healthy volunteers, uveitis patients with different etiologies and Behçet's disease patients with and without ocular involvement were examined by CDI. Central retinal artery (CRA), posterior ciliary artery (PCA), ophthalmic artery (OA) and central retinal vein (CRV) flow velocities and vascular resistances were measured prospectively by a radiologist blinded to the presence and etiology of uveitis.Results. The peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities in CRA and PCA in Behçet's disease with ocular involvement were significantly lower than all other groups (p<0.001). Peak systolic and end-diastolic velocities in CRA were lower than the control group in Behçet's disease patients without ocular involvement (p<0.001) but there were no differences in PCA and OA flow velocity (p>0.05). In the uveitis group, CRA and CRV flow velocities were significantly lower than in the control group (p<0.001).Conclusions. According to our results, uveitis in Behçet's disease is associated with significant reductions of CRA and PCA flow velocities when compared with other types of uveitis and. healthy subjects. In cases without ocular involvement, CRA flow velocities were lower than the control group, but there were no real differences in the PCA and OA values. This suggests that vasculitic involvement of PCA is more specific to Behçet's disease and occurs later in the course of the disease. The results also suggest that it may be possible to detect and follow hemodynamic changes in Behçet's disease with CDI before clinical findings of ocular involvement become evident.

We describe a case of coronary-subclavian steal in a 60-year-old man who presented with progressive ischemia 16 years after coronary artery bypass with in-situ bilateral internal thoracic artery grafts. Angiography revealed completely patent arterial grafts, but subtotal stenosis of the left subclavian artery. On reoperation, a vein graft was used to connect the aorta to the left internal thoracic artery which was proximally disrupted. No coronary ischemia was found postoperatively.

Purpose In this prospective study, argon laser photocoagulation was used to eliminate misdirected cilia. The cases were followed up to see the results and recurrences with this treatment.Methods 60 eyelids of 45 patients with trichiasis were treated with the argon laser. After topical anesthesia a blue-green argon laser was used with 1 watt power, for 0.20 seconds, with 100 micrometer beam diameter. The beam was directed coaxially to the lash follicle to create a 2–3 mm crater and vaporization was observed. After crater formation, the laser parameters were changed to 1.2 watt power, for 0.20 seconds, with 200 micrometer beam diameter, to destroy residual follicular tissue. Up to five lashes were treated in one session. At the end of each session an antibiotic ointment was used t.i.d. for a week.Results Patients have been followed for 4–12 months (mean 6 months). Recurrences have been seen in 15 of 60 eyelids (25%). Laser treatment has been used with the same protocol for the cases with recurrence and results have been successful in eight of them. Post-operatively severe pain, hemorrhage, scar formation, neovascularization of lid margin, or infection were not seen in any patient. In three cases mild hypopigmentation and in three other cases mild lid notching were observed.Conclusions Argon laser lash ablation can be done as an effective office procedure with topical anesthesia. The advantages include low recurrence and complication rates in carefully selected patients and minimal postoperative discomfort.

Abstract.: Liver involvement with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is not a rare condition. Its angiographic abnormalities are well known, but reports of the sonographic and, especially, color Doppler sonographic findings are limited. We present a patient with HHT and describe the hepatic color Doppler sonographic findings.

Abstract: We report a unique case of adult-type polycystic kidney disease (PKD) having bilateral chronic perirenal fluid collection with unusual extension. Fluid collections at both sides are connected across the midline anterior to the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava. In addition, supradiaphragmatic extension through aortic hiatus was well demonstrated by computed tomography (CT). Anatomical boundaries and relations between two perirenal spaces are evaluated.
