To develop AI-based models capable of governing or providing decision support to complex manufacturing environments, abstractions and mechanisms for unified management of data storage and processing capabilities are needed. Specifically, as such models tend to include and rely on detailed representations of systems, components, and tools with complex interactions, mechanisms for simplifying, integrating, and scaling management capabilities in the presence of complex data requirements (e.g., high volume, velocity, and diversity of data) are of particular interest. A data fabric is a system that provides a unified architecture for management and provisioning of data. In this work we present the background, design requirements, and high-level outline of the ASSISTANT data fabric - a flexible data management tool designed for use in adaptive manufacturing contexts. The paper outlines the implementation of the system with specific focus on the use of domain models and the data modeling approach used, as well as provides a generic use case structure reusable in many industrial contexts.

Currently, pioneer companies are working hard to construct applied ethical frameworks in different sectors for using AI components that generate trust in their clients and workforce. However, independent of these few companies, there is still a considerable gap between understanding the impact of using responsible AI components, the implications of the lack of use, and what is currently applied in the industrial sector.

The European project ASSISTANT will provide a set of AI-based digital twins that helps process engineers and production planners to operate collaborative mixed-model assembly lines based on the data collected from IoT devices and external data sources. Such a tool will help planners to design the assembly line, plan the production, operate the line, and improve process tuning. In addition, the system monitors the line in real-time, ensures that all required resources are available, and allows fast re-planning when necessary. ASSISTANT aims to make cost-effective decisions while ensuring product quality, safety and wellbeing of the workers, and managing the various sources of uncertainties. The resulting digital twin systems will be data-driven, agile, autonomous, collaborative and explainable, safe but reactive.

The purpose of this study was (i) to investigate if the compensatory effect of text-to-speech (TTS) technology on reading comprehension and reading rate in schoolchildren with reading disability is influenced by problems with inattention and hyperactivity and (ii) to examine whether a potentially moderating effect of such symptoms differ between grade groups. Participants (N= 49) were randomized into one of the two experimental conditions: Group A listened to a text with TTS, and Group B read the text themselves. The conditions were then switched. Inattention and hyperactivity symptoms were assessed with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Statistical analyses were performed both on the whole group and within-grade groups (Grades 3–5 and 6–9). Using TTS technology had a positive effect on reading rate for both grade groups, and this effect was not influenced by attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. As for reading comprehension, the two groups differed both with respect to the amount of improvement seen in the TTS condition and with respect to the moderating effect of ADHD symptoms. Reading with TTS improved reading comprehension significantly in the younger group, whereas no effect on reading comprehension was found in the older group. A higher score on the SDQ ADHD Scale was associated with lessimprovement in reading comprehension in the younger group and with greaterimprovement in reading comprehension in the older group. The results indicate that symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity, as well as the child’s grade level, are factors that should be taken into account when planning and introducing TTS technology.

Studies suggest associations between childhood autistic traits and adolescent psychotic experiences. However, recent research suggests that a general neuropsychiatric problems factor predicts adverse outcomes better than specific diagnostic entities. To examine if the alleged association between autistic traits and psychotic experiences could rather be explained by a general neuropsychiatric problems factor comprising symptoms of ADHD, tic disorder, developmental coordination disorder, and learning disorder, we conducted a prospective cohort study based on the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden. In addition, we examined the genetic and environmental influences on the associations. A total of 9,282 twins with data on childhood autistic traits and other neuropsychiatric problems, and follow‐up data on psychotic experiences at ages 15 and/or 18 years were included. First, psychotic experiences were regressed on autistic traits and second, the general neuropsychiatric problems factor was added to the model. Auditory hallucinations were analyzed separately from the other psychotic experiences. Finally, twin analyses were employed to disentangle genetic from environmental influences in the observed associations. Replicating prior research, significant associations were found between autistic traits in childhood and auditory hallucinations at ages 15 and 18. However, after controlling for the general neuropsychiatric problems factor, the associations between autistic traits and auditory hallucinations disappeared, whereas the association between the general neuropsychiatric problems factor and auditory hallucinations persisted after controlling for autistic traits. Twin analyses revealed that the association between the general neuropsychiatric problems factor and auditory hallucinations was driven by shared genetic influences. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The aim of this study was threefold: (i) to clarify whether letter and category fluency tap different cognitive abilities; (ii) to make diagnostic comparisons and predictions using temporally resolved fluency data; (iii) to challenge and test the widely made assumption that 1-min sum scores are the fluency test measure of choice in the diagnosis of dementia. Scores from six 10-sec intervals of letter and category fluency tests were obtained from 240 participants including cognitive levels ranging from mild subjective cognitive complaints to Alzheimer's disease. Factor analysis revealed clearly separate factors corresponding to letter and category fluency. Category fluency was markedly impaired in Alzheimer's disease but not in Mild Cognitive Impairment. Only scores from relatively early intervals predicted Alzheimer's disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment. The conclusions are (i) letter and category fluency are different tests, category fluency being the best diagnostic predictor; (ii) it would be possible to administer category fluency tests only for 30sec, because after this point the necessary differential diagnostic information about the patient's word fluency capacity has already been gathered.

Verb fluency requires self-sustained verb retrieval. The brain correlates of this task are virtually unknown. We investigated the relations between verb and noun (semantic) fluency and regional brain perfusion in subjects with varying degrees of cognitive decline, ranging from very mild subjective impairment to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Data consisted of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data and temporally resolved verb and noun fluency scores from 93 participants. Impaired verb fluency was predicted by a temporal lobe hypoperfusion factor and low education, whereas high age and low perfusion in the parietotemporal-occipital region predicted impaired noun fluency. Analysis of perfusion within the temporal region indicated primary involvement of the temporal pole and medial temporal lobe in AD. This might reflect pathology of the anterior parahippocampal region, which appears early in neurodegenerative disease. Although temporal lobe structures have not usually been implicated in verb processing, early temporal pathology thus appears to contribute to impaired verb fluency in cognitive decline.

Jargonagraphia is known to occur after discrete brain lesions but not in primary degenerative dementia. We report a patient with frontotemporal dementia who developed jargonagraphia and nonfluent aphasia. Written output was graphically preserved but consisted of short words intermingled with abstruse neologisms. MRI showed predominant right frontotemporal cortical atrophy accompanied by white matter hyperintensities in the right anterior subcallosal periventricular region. Diagnosis and MRI were corroborated by extensive neuropathological findings obtained 8 months later. The agraphia in this case is discussed with reference to both specific macroscopic and microscopic pathoanatomical lesions. We suggest that jargonagraphia can appear in frontotemporal dementia depending on the localization of lesions.

Word fluency performance is known to rely on left frontal cortical regions and has also been shown to be affected by lesions in the white matter, which may be seen as white matter hyperintensities (WMH) on magnetic resonance imaging. However, word fluency may be divided into two independent components, initial and late performance, separated in time [J Clin Exp Neuropsychol 1998;20:137–143]. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the two components of FAS fluency performance and WMH. Patients varying in degree of memory impairment participated: Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment and subjective memory disorder. WMH were rated with the Scheltens scale in the periventricular and deep subcortical areas. Results demonstrated that WMH in this sample of patients may be summarized in two indices according to a principal factor analysis, one anterior factor mainly related to WMH in the frontal lobes and adjacent to ventricles, and a second posterior factor related to parietal and occipital WMH. The initial FAS performance was related to anterior WMH, in particular left frontal or lateral periventricular hyperintensities, whereas the late FAS performance was not related to any index of WMH.

BACKGROUND: Patients with isolated aphasia in the absence of other cognitive abnormalities have been the focus of several studies during the past decade. It has been called primary progressive aphasia (PPA), and the typical features of this syndrome are marked atrophy of the left temporal lobe according to the radiological examination and a language disorder as the initial symptom. In previous studies of PPA, the selection of the patients was based mainly on linguistic symptoms. Now, when computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans are part of the routine investigation of cognitive impairment and suspected dementia, the patients with lobar atrophy will be found at an earlier stage. In the present study, we used a new approach and defined the study group by selecting patients with obvious left temporal lobe atrophy, assessed by MRI, and we referred to them as patients with temporal lobe atrophy (TLA). OBJECTIVE: To identify the features that distinguish TLA from other primary neurodegenerative disorders. PATIENTS: Six patients with TLA were compared with patients with Alzheimer disease (AD), patients with frontal lobe dementia (FLD), and healthy control subjects. METHODS: The investigations included magnetic resonance imaging volumetry, single photon emission computed tomography, and neuropsychologic and linguistic evaluations. RESULTS: In the TLA group, the mean volume of the left temporal lobe was 35% smaller than the right, while in the AD and FLD groups, the atrophy was symmetrical and bilateral. In the TLA group, the absolute volumes of the temporal lobes were significantly smaller on the left side compared with the AD and FLD groups, whereas there was no difference on the right side. The cerebral blood flow pattern in TLA was asymmetric and differed from that in the other study groups. All patients with TLA had a history of progressive Wernicke-type aphasia, ranging from 2 to 6 years. They showed primary verbal memory impairment but had preserved visuo-spatial functions. The clinical condition of all patients with TLA deteriorated during the study period; severe aphasia developed, and the patients exhibited signs of frontal lobe dysfunction. Serial volumetric measurements in 4 of 6 patients showed an annual 8% to 9% decrease of both left and right temporal lobes. CONCLUSIONS: The initial marked asymmetry in cognitive function found in patients with TLA contrasts with the general decline found in patients with AD. The bilateral degenerative process evident in patients with TLA paralleled the clinical deterioration, indicating TLA to be a non-AD lobar atrophy that develops into generalized cognitive dysfunction and dementia.
