Monitoring of the introduction of unapproved genetically modified (GM) events is required because the approval status of a GM event may differ from country to country. The on-site methods such as loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) offer a technological answer for the rapid GM detection beyond the laboratories. Real-time LAMP assays detecting one GM target were reported earlier. To increase the efficiency of the assay, a multiplex real-time LAMP simultaneously targeting Figwort Mosaic Viruspromoter (P-FMV) that constructs region between the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus35S promoter and cry1Acgene (p35S-cry1Ac) and neomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) marker gene was developed. The assay could detect as low as 0.1% for each GM target within 45 min. To the best of our knowledge, multiplexing in real-time LAMP using the Genie II system with applicability in GM detection has been reported herein for the first time. The developed method provides rapid, on-site, and real-time GM detection in seeds and food products.

Approximately 5 % of all seeds at a seed company are discarded because of their underutilization. Bitter gourd contains a large number of seeds that are discarded, which are difficult to treat and cause severe environmental pollution. However, these seeds are a rich source of bioactive metabolites (such as glycosides, saponin, alkaloids, triterpenes, steroids, dietary fibers, essential oils, and saturated and unsaturated fatty acids) with antioxidant, antimicrobial properties, and health-promoting effects. So, it is important to find ways to treat this waste and use it in various food products and health-promoting effects to benefit humans and prevent environmental pollution as per Goal 12 (responsible consumption and production) of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. This review discussed the extraction of different functional compounds by using traditional and modern extraction techniques, nutraceutical and food applications, as well as the toxicological effects of the bitter gourd seeds, aiming to give a new research direction to the researchers of concerned fields to find more potential applications of this natural waste. Both in vivo and in vitro study results showed that bitter gourd seeds in powder, extract, and oils can be used as antioxidant and antitumor agents and showed antidiabetic, anti-obesity, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Bitter gourd seeds also have healthy and technological compounds that could be used in food industries to improve food products' quality, stability, and nutritional characteristics. Bitter gourd seeds can also be used to purify drinking water. Further studies are needed to find more applications of this natural by-product in developing functional and nutritious foods.

Food is medicine (FIM) initiatives are an emerging strategy for addressing nutrition-related health disparities increasingly endorsed by providers, payers, and policymakers. However, food insecurity screening protocols and oversight of medically-tailored food assistance programs are novel for many healthcare settings. Here, we describe the pre-implementation planning processes used to successfully engage federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) across Kansas to develop new FIM initiatives. A Kansas-based philanthropic foundation facilitated pre-implementation planning for FQHCs over 17 months across 3 stages: 1) Community inquiry, 2) FIM learning event with invitation for FQHC attendees to request pre-implementation funding, and 3) Pre-implementation planning workshops and application assignments for FQHC grantees to develop a FIM implementation grant proposal. We evaluated satisfaction and perceived utility of these pre-implementation planning activities via post-workshop surveys and qualitative comparisons of FIM design components from pre-implementation and implementation grant applications. All 7 FQHCs attending the learning event applied for and were awarded pre-implementation planning grants; 6 submitted an implementation grant application following workshop completion. FQHCs rated pre-implementation support activities favorably; however, most clinics cited limited staff as a barrier to effective planning. As compared to pre-implementation planning grant proposals, all FQHCs elected to narrow their priority population to people with pre-diabetes or diabetes with better articulation of evidence-based nutrition prescriptions and intervention models in their final program designs. In the midst of a nationwide FIM groundswell, we recommend that funders, clinic stakeholders, and evaluators work together to devise and financially support appropriate pre-implementation planning activities prior to launching new FIM initiatives.

SUMMARYThe suitability of some indigenous, under-exploited and under-valued vegetables, fruits and seeds of southeastern Nigerian shrubs and forest species for food, feed and industry is examined. Assessment was conducted by analysing and processing the plant material into various forms. Results showed that essential oils abound in the fruits and/or seeds of Monodora, Xylopia, Piper, Tetrapleura, Dennettia, and Vitexspp. Some of these oils are suitable for the flavouring of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, particularly if suitable blends are used. In the case of Dacryodes, Pentaclethra, Treculia, Irvingiavars. gabonensisand excelsa, vegetable oils were extracted at commercial quantities. In addition, when compared with oils used conventionally in the manufacture of soaps, bakery products, and pharmaceutical products, oils from these species showed high saponification, iodine and acid values, making them equally suitable for these industries. Further studies on defatted powders from species of Irvingia, Treculiaand Pentaclethraseeds revealed significant improvements in their storability and, in the case of Irvingia, drawability. Varying the process techniques enhanced their product types, thus providing the necessary impetus for increased propagation and production of these forest species.

A survey on mites associated with stored seeds, flour and foodstuffs in Fayoum Governorate, Upper Egypt, proved the occurrence of about 24 species. Of these, 15 species in 8 families belong to Prostigmata, 6 species in 3 families belong to Astigmata and 3 species in 2 families belong to Mesostigmata. Members of the families Cheyletidae and Acaridae were the most common mites, found in many samples. Those of Caligonellidae, Ascidae and Raphignathidae were fairly common, but occurred in fewer types of samples. No mites were found in samples of lupine and camomile.

Commercially available snack bars and other foodstuffs prepared from pressed hemp seeds were ingested by volunteers. Urine specimens were collected for 24 h after ingestion of the foodstuffs containing hemp seeds and tested for marijuana using an EMIT immunoassay and gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Specimens from individuals who ate one hemp seed bar demonstrated little marijuana immunoreactivity, and only one specimen screened positive at a 20-ng/mL cutoff. Specimens from individuals who ate two hemp seed bars showed increased immunoreactivity, and five specimens screened positive at a 20-ng/mL cutoff. A single specimen yielded a quantitative GC-MS value (0.6 ng/mL), but it failed to meet reporting criteria. Several specimens from individuals who ate three cookies made from hemp seed flour and butter screened positive at both 50- and 20-ng/mL cutoffs. Two specimens produced quantitative GC-MS values (0.7 and 3.1 ng/mL), but they failed to meet reporting criteria. Several specimens also tested positive with an FDA-approved on-site marijuana-screening device. Hemp seeds similar to those used in the foodstuffs did not demonstrate the presence of marijuana when tested by GC-MS. In this study, ingestion of hemp seed food products resulted in urine specimens that screened positive for marijuana. No specimens gave a GC-MS quantitative value above the limit of detection for marijuana.
