Using data from the 2018 Chinese Family Panel Studies, this study examines the associations between premarital cohabitation, marital satisfaction, and the probability of a subsequent divorce and captures the gradated variations of marital quality by incorporating divorce and self-rated marital satisfaction into a generic measure of marital quality. Findings show positive associations between cohabitation and divorce and negative associations between cohabitation and marital quality. Results further show that the negative association between cohabitation and marital quality is weakened by better education, higher income, and rural origin, and stronger among men. The consistent negative associations between cohabitation and all the marital quality outcomes indicate the persistent strength of the norm of universal marriage, based on which cohabitation is still considered substantively distinct from marriage both in terms of legal status and social recognition. The diverse social gradients of the cohabitation-marital quality links reflect the heterogeneous social meanings of cohabitation in contemporary China.

A study conducted by researchers at Miami University aimed to establish trajectories of later-life marital quality and assess predictors of trajectory membership. Abstract:The quality of partnered relationships is integral to individual and family health and well-being over the life span. Significant shifts in ethno-cultural diversity, parental roles, and family life contribute to more complex partnership experiences in North American society. Drawing from a socio-cultural life course lens, we examine parental marital satisfaction/quality in later life in terms of ethnicity, socio-demographic variables (e.g., ethnic identity, gender, age, health status) and family context (e.g., presence of children at home, intergenerational relations, retirement status). Data are drawn from a sample of 454 married/partnered adults aged 50+ with a least one child aged 19–35 who reside in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, from four cultural groups: British, Chinese, Persian/Iranian, and South Asian. Using Ordinary Linear Regression, we model predictors of three dependent variables: global marital satisfaction and two sub-scales, including positive and negative emotional/cognitive appraisals of relationship quality. Several ethnic group contrasts were supported, with Chinese reporting lower global marital satisfaction than the South Asians and Persian/Iranians reporting lower levels of positive marital appraisals than the South Asians. In addition, these associations were nuanced by interactions between ethnicity and gender, revealing distinct relationships with the dependent variables. Results also support associations for several covariates. In particular, greater income satisfaction and those reporting lower conflict with their children had higher marital quality; and males and those reporting better health only had positive associations with the global marital satisfaction scale. Implications for theorizing relationship quality in later life and recommendations for those who work with culturally diverse older adults (e.g., mental health care professionals, community service providers) are discussed.Résumé:La qualité des relations conjugales fait partie intégrante de la santé et du bien-être individuels et familiaux tout au long de la vie. Des changements importants dans la diversité ethnoculturelle, les rôles parentaux et la vie familiale contribuent à des expériences de partenariat plus complexes dans la société nord-américaine. Dans une perspective socioculturelle du parcours de vie, nous examinons la satisfaction/la qualité de la relation conjugale des parents plus tard dans la vie en termes d'ethnicité, de variables sociodémographiques (par exemple, l'identité ethnique, le sexe, l'âge, l'état de santé) et le contexte familial (par exemple, la présence d'enfants au foyer, les relations intergénérationnelles, la situation à la retraite). Plusieurs contrastes ont été confirmés entre groupes ethniques, les Chinois déclarant une satisfaction conjugale globale inférieure à celle des Sud-Asiatiques et les Perses/Iraniens déclarant des niveaux d'évaluations conjugales positives inférieurs à ceux des Sud-Asiatiques. De plus, ces associations sont nuancées par des interactions entre l'ethnicité et le sexe, révélant des relations distinctes avec les variables dépendantes. Les résultats confirment également des associations entre plusieurs covariables. En particulier, une plus grande satisfaction relative au revenu et les répondants déclarant moins de conflits avec leurs enfants avaient une relation conjugale de meilleure qualité; et les hommes et les répondants déclarant une meilleure santé n'avaient que des associations positives avec l'échelle globale de satisfaction conjugale. Previous studies have shown that psychopathy, one of the Dark Triad personality traits, is associated with relationship dissatisfaction. However, the similarity of psychopathy among romantic couples remains uncertain with regard to relationship outcomes. This study examined the effect of the perceptual similarity of psychopathy on marital quality in a sample of 245 heterosexual married couples, using intraclass correlation coefficients as the method for assessing couples' similarity. This study also explored the possible mediating role of couple communication based on the Actor–Partner Interdependence model. The results reveal that husbands' self‐rating and wives' partner‐rating of psychopathy showed negative effects on marital quality, whereas wives' perceptual similarity of psychopathy exerted both actor and partner effects on marital quality via couple communication. The current study enriches the theoretical framework of personality and relationship outcomes and emphasizes the importance of communication in a close relationship.

The deleterious nature of U.S. economic recessions over the last several decades highlight a need to investigate the role of family economic strain on families. The current study explored the impact of family economic strain on marital quality and marital stability through dyadic associations of marital support and work–family conflict of 370 married couples over a 12-year period (1989–2001) through an actor–partner interdependence model, encompassing two major U.S. recessions. Guided by family stress and coping theory, findings are consistent with past research indicating the negative impact of family economic strain on marital quality and marital stability; however, this impact may be mitigated through the mediation of positive perceptions of marital support and work–family conflict. Implications suggest financial counselors should consider the lasting influence of economic strain on families, and how the psychosocial resources of martial support and managing work–family conflict may promote relationship quality and stability.

Abstract:Triangulation is an important subject in marriage and family therapy. Chinese family culture emphasizes consanguinity, which means that adult children have great difficulty separating from their original families and establishing clear boundaries. This results in the unique problem of family-of-origin triangulation in Chinese marriages. The current study explored the relationship between family-of-origin triangulation and the marital quality of Chinese couples, and examined the mediating role of in-law relationships. A total of 341 Chinese couples, ranging from newlyweds to those with school-aged children, participated in the survey. The results demonstrate that family-of-origin triangulation of both husbands and wives negatively predicted wives' marital quality, whereas husbands' marital quality was only predicted by their own family-of-origin triangulation. Moreover, family-of-origin triangulation not only predicted marital quality directly, but also indirectly by damaging the relationships with in-laws. The actor effects of family-of-origin triangulation were partially mediated by in-law relationships, whereas the partner effects of husbands' triangulation on wives' marital quality was fully mediated by in-law relationships. Family therapists in China should pay more attention to intergenerational relationships and reestablishing the sub-system boundaries of husband and wife, and at the same time, focus on repairing the couple's relationships with the in-laws.Résumé:La triangulation s'agit d'un sujet important dans la thérapie matrimoniale et familiale. La Chine met l'accent sur la culture familiale de consanguinité, c'est pouquoi les enfants adultes ont beaucoup de difficulté à se séparer de leur famille d'origine et à établir des limites claires. Cela pose le problème unique de la triangulation de la famille d'origine dans les mariages chinois. Dans la présente étude, on explore la relation entre la triangulation de la famille d'origine et la qualité matrimoniale des couples chinois et examine le rôle de médiation des relations de la belle famille. Un total de 341 couples chinois, allant des jeunes mariés aux couples d'âge scolaire, ont participé à l'enquête. Les résultats démontrent que la triangulation de la famille d'origine des couples prédisait négativement la qualité maritale des épouses, alors que la qualité maritale des maris n'était prédite que par la propre triangulation de leur famille d'origine. De plus, la triangulation de la famille d'origine prédit non seulement la qualité matrimoniale directement, mais aussi indirectement en endommageant les relations avec la belle-famille. Les effets de la triangulation de la famille d'origine sur les acteurs ont été partiellement médiés par les relations de belle-famille, tandis que les effets de partenaire de la triangulation des maris sur la qualité matrimoniale des épouses étaient entièrement médiatisés par les relations de belle-mère. Il faut que les thérapeutes familiaux chinois accordent plus d'attention aux relations intergénérationnelles et au rétablissement des limites des sous-systèmes entre mari et femme, en même temps, s'attachent à rétablir les relations du couple avec la belle-famille.

To study the interrelationships between depression, marital quality and modes of relating, 86 couples from a housing complex were compared with 63 couples with serious marital difficulties (assessed by a marital guidance clinic). Clinical interviews, a depression scale and a present state exam revealed that 46 wives from the housing complex suffered from ongoing depression. Clinic couples were not evaluated for depression, but all couples in the study underwent semistructured interviews which assessed quality of marriage and negative ways of relating. Negative relating was broken into three factors: lack of affection, dominance and dependence. Each partner rated the marriage and their own and their spouse's ability to relate. Maladjustment scores were tallied, then couples were divided into three marital quality groups: worst (25 couples), best (24 couples), and average (37 couples). Self- and husband-ratings of all three negative ways of relating by depressed women were significantly higher than those of nondepressed women and their husbands. Wives in the worst quality group tended to be more dominant than other wives. Couples in which a husband or wife was rated as being highly affectionate were more predominant in the best group. No direct causal link was found between depression and quality of marriage. Results indicate that the relationship between depression and poor marital quality is linked to a third cofactor related to negative modes of relating. ABSTRACTMarried individuals have been shown to have a health advantage over individuals in other marital status groups, especially among those in high quality marriages. However, it is largely unknown whether this health advantage also pertains to military personnel, whose relationships are often characterized by frequent and long separations and who receive unique economic and health benefits. The present study uses cross-sectional survey data from 2,475 U.S. soldiers and compares married soldiers with high marital quality to soldiers with low marital quality, never married soldiers, and previously married soldiers, using 6 indicators of mental and physical health (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, self-rated health, past-month medical visits, and somatic symptoms). Results indicate that married soldiers with low marital quality and previously married soldiers have poorer health than do married soldiers with high marital quality. No differences were observed between the never-married and the high-marital-quality groups. These results suggest that the health advantage of married military personnel is contextualized by marital quality but that never married military personnel may be protected from the health disadvantage that is generally found in civilian populations.

Background Low marital quality is associated with adverse health outcomes and lower personal well-being. Loneliness increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality and predicts poor quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between marital quality and loneliness and subjective health status in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) patients who underwent cardiac rehabilitation (CR).Design/methods In a prospective cohort study, pPCI patients that followed CR were included between 2009–2011. A total of 223 patients responded to the Short Form 12 (SF-12) (subjective health status), Maudsley Marital Questionnaire (MMQ-6) (marital quality) and University of California, Los Angeles – Revised (UCLA-R) questionnaires at baseline (pre-CR) and at three months (post-CR) or at 12 months follow-up. Subjective health status is displayed by a physical component summary (PCS) score and a mental component summary (MCS) score. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses were performed to test improvements in subjective health status.Results Changes over time in subjective health status scores were similar between patients with optimal marital quality vs patients with less optimal marital quality and non-lonely patients vs lonely patients. The MCS level at one-year follow-up of both patients with less optimal marital quality and lonely patients was lower compared with a healthy Dutch population (respectively; mean MCS score 47.3 (standard deviation (SD) 10.5); p= 0.013 and mean MCS score 46.1 (SD 11.2); p= 0.010).Conclusion Both patients with less optimal marital quality and lonely patients did not reach the MCS level of a healthy Dutch population. Therefore, extra care and support should be given to these patients in a CR programme.

AbstractThe personality traits of each partner have an effect on marital quality. Research studies of this nature carried out in Turkey are quite limited in number. Therefore, this study focused on the relationship between the personality traits and marital quality in married couples. Four hundred eighty-eight couples that lived in different cities in Turkey took part in the research. The level of marital quality of men was higher than that of women, while agreeableness and neuroticism were higher in women than in men. Marriage duration and neuroticism of women negatively, and educational level positively predicted marital quality. Openness to expressions of men positively predicted marital quality, while neuroticism of them negatively predicted it. Personality traits of men were not predictors of the marital quality of women while personality traits of women were not predictors of marital quality of men.

This study examined the relationship between religiousness, relational commitment, and marital quality, proposing that relational commitment would act as a mediator in the relationship between religiousness and marital quality. Using a causal step approach to testing mediation, zero-order correlates demonstrated significant relationships among all 3 variables. In examining the mediating effects of relational commitment, full mediation for religiousness on marital quality was determined by using a sequential regression analysis.
