The presence and importance of small drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) are increasing. With traditional radar detection the target radar cross section and its statistical properties are needed in order to design the detector and to assess detection performance. The authors make a statistical analysis of the radar cross section of two small fixed‐wing drones using measured data from typical flights. Using data from a typical flight instead of measurements or electromagnetic calculations as a function of aspect angle is a convenient method. Work results of the authors in mean values, medians and standard deviations, in analyses of common target probability distributions and in decorrelation times for the radar cross section, are necessary for design and assessment of the detection performance. The authors suggest a new target probability distribution which agrees better with the measured data than the others tested. The authors also note significant differences between the drones. The use of WiFi signals for sensing purposes has attracted a lot of interest from both the radar and communications communities and several techniques have been explored. In the attempt of meeting the requirements for small sensor size, compactness, and easy deployment, the authors consider reference‐free approaches, namely approaches that do not require a good copy of the transmitted waveform to be available at the radar receiver. To this end, the authors first resort to a passive radar‐based processing scheme that only exploits the invariant a priori known initial portion of the physical layer protocol data unit, that is, the PHY Preamble, and its limitations in practical applications is investigated. Specifically, the authors show that, with this approach, an accurate time, phase, and frequency synchronization is essential and a possible strategy is investigated. As an alternative solution the authors consider a forward scatter radar‐based approach where only the amplitude modulation of the received signal is exploited to detect the presence of a moving target thus avoiding the need to know the transmitted signal. For the first time, the authors comparatively investigate advantages and drawbacks of the two reference‐free approaches and present practical strategies to handle the limitations observed. The millimetre wave radar signatures of sea lions collected from three animals in the outdoor seal pool available at the Sea Mammal Research Unit in St Andrews in the Autumn of 2021 is reported. The objective is to study the radar amplitude and Doppler signatures of the animals when their full body or part thereof is above water, which is important for the application of autonomous marine navigation. The data was collected using 24 GHz (K‐band) and 77 GHz (W‐band) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radars with linear polarisation. It has been demonstrated that the sea lions were very clearly detected by the radars with Signal to Noise Ratio greater than 30 dB at a range of 40 m. The calculated modal radar cross section (RCS) of the sea lions in HH polarisation at 24 and 77 GHz vary from −48 to −26 dBsm and −48 to −28 dBsm respectively, corresponding to the different body parts and the amount of exposure to the radar beam. In VV polarisation, the modal RCS value range is from −49 to −26 dBsm and −49 to −22 dBsm respectively. The paper focuses on the results of experimental research on the possibility of passive space object detection using a single radio telescope from the European Low‐Frequency Array (LOFAR) network of astronomical radio telescopes. Commercial digital television (DVB‐T) transmitters were used as illuminators of opportunity in this radar system. In the conducted experiments, one LOFAR radio telescope served both as a surveillance receiver and reference receiver in a passive radar system. The greater part of the LOFAR telescope array was used to observe a space object, while a small part of the array was directed towards the illuminator of opportunity to record the reference signal. One of the most important problems to overcome with utilising the LOFAR radio telescope in such a solution was the effective suppression of the direct‐path component in a surveillance signal coming from the illuminator of opportunity, which was relatively close to the LOFAR radio telescope. The results regarding the passive detection of the International Space Station, included in the paper, confirm the possibility of observing the space object flying in Low‐Earth Orbit using the LOFAR telescope or another receiving system with a similar antenna array. This paper proposes a simple non‐adaptive approach for the suppression of direct signal and clutter contributions in a passive radar system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmissions, exploiting the properties of a reciprocal filter (RF). The use of a RF allows to circumvent the limits posed by the waveform ambiguity function, producing a data‐independent time‐invariant response to a stationary point‐like target echo at the output of the range compression stage. This feature enables simple clutter cancellation strategies, based on the subtraction of delayed portions of the surveillance signal, according to the conventional moving target indication methodologies. The proposed processing scheme consists of a range compression stage based on a RF, followed by a Single Canceller. Its performance is investigated against a simulated and an experimental data set, for the case of a digital video broadcasting‐terrestial‐based passive radar scenario, and it is compared to an alternative scheme based on a conventional matched filter and adaptive cancellation techniques. The proposed approach is shown to yield a perfect cancellation of the clutter returns from a stationary scene under ideal conditions. The marginal Fisher information (MFI) metric is used to design waveforms for the sake of informationally optimal adaptive‐on‐transmit radar operation. A framework for MFI waveform design is developed and the Polyphase‐Coded FM (PCFM) waveform model is utilised to produce a constant‐modulus, spectrally contained signal amenable to transmission with high‐power amplifiers. The efficacy of the MFI waveform design and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation is experimentally demonstrated and extended into an adaptive and dynamic sensing paradigm. The radar transmit waveform is optimised to maximise the Fisher information with respect to the range profile. Upon observing new information from radar echoes, the iterative MMSE (iMMSE) estimator then minimises the estimation error variance according to prior observations. Sequential information maximisation (via waveform design) and error minimisation (via iMMSE) tends towards the Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) with additional measurements improving radar resolution and accuracy. A fundamental challenge in the practical implementation of multistatic radar systems (MSRS) is the requirement for precise time and frequency synchronisation between the spatially separated radar nodes. The authors evaluate the performance of different classes of commercially available Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) timing receivers, Local Oscillators (LO) and GNSS Disciplined Oscillators (GNSSDOs) to determine the limitations of using one‐way GNSS Time and Frequency Transfer (TFT) in this application. From evaluating the performance of three pairs of GNSSDOs, it is concluded that one‐way GNSS TFT will likely be suitable only for the synchronisation of fully spatially coherent MSRS with carrier frequencies up to 100 MHz and waveform bandwidths up to 20 MHz. Whereas, in the case of short‐term spatially coherent MSRS, synchronisation of systems with carrier frequencies up to a few GHz and waveform bandwidths of over 100 MHz will likely be possible. The performance of the different classes of GNSSDOs during GNSS denial (holdover) are evaluated, where it is concluded that frequency offsets between LOs at the point of GNSS denial will often significantly contribute, or even dominate, the holdover performance. In this article, a simple, yet effective, Bayesian scheme for tracks maintenance, promotion, and deletion in drone surveillance radar is presented. It enables the simultaneous tracking of the target body and micro‐Doppler components that originate from the motion of rotors (if any) onboard an unmanned air system. This not only delivers more accurate multi‐target tracking, but also substantially improves the radar automatic target classification capability (e.g. discriminating between drone and non‐drone targets). Recent studies from the Seeded and Natural Orographic Wintertime Clouds: The Idaho Experiment (SNOWIE) demonstrated definitive radar evidence of seeding signatures in winter orographic clouds during three intensive operation periods (IOPs) where the background signal from natural precipitation was weak and a radar signal attributable to seeding could be identified as traceable seeding lines. Except for the three IOPs where seeding was detected, background natural snowfall was present during seeding operations and no clear seeding signatures were detected. This paper provides a quantitative analysis to assess if orographic cloud seeding effects are detectable using radar when background precipitation is present. We show that a 5-dB change in equivalent reflectivity factor Ze is required to stand out against background natural Ze variability. This analysis considers four radar wavelengths, a range of background ice water contents (IWC) from 0.012 to 1.214 g m−3, and additional IWC introduced by seeding ranging from 0.012 to 0.486 g m−3. The upper-limit values of seeded IWC are based on measurements of IWC from the Nevzorov probe employed on the University of Wyoming King Air aircraft during SNOWIE. This analysis implies that seeding effects will be undetectable using radar within background snowfall unless the background IWC is small, and the seeding effects are large. It therefore remains uncertain whether seeding had no effect on cloud microstructure, and therefore produced no signature on radar, or whether seeding did have an effect, but that effect was undetectable against the background reflectivity associated with naturally produced precipitation. Significance Statement: Operational glaciogenic seeding programs targeting wintertime orographic clouds are funded by a range of stakeholders to increase snowpack. Glaciogenic seeding signatures have been observed by radar when natural background snowfall is weak but never when heavy background precipitation was present. This analysis quantitatively shows that seeding effects will be undetectable using radar reflectivity under conditions of background snowfall unless the background snowfall is weak, and the seeding effects are large. It therefore remains uncertain whether seeding had no effect on cloud microstructure, and therefore produced no signature on radar, or whether seeding did have an effect, but that effect was undetectable against the background reflectivity associated with naturally produced precipitation. Alternative assessment methods such as trace element analysis in snow, aircraft measurements, precipitation measurements, and modeling should be used to determine the efficacy of orographic cloud seeding when heavy background precipitation is present. Precipitation forecasting is an immensely significant aspect of meteorological prediction. Accurate weather predictions facilitate services in sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and tourism. In recent years, deep learning-based radar echo extrapolation techniques have found effective applications in precipitation forecasting. However, the ability of existing methods to extract and characterize complex spatiotemporal features from radar echo images remains insufficient, resulting in suboptimal forecasting accuracy. This paper proposes a novel extrapolation algorithm based on a dual-branch encoder–decoder and spatiotemporal Gated Recurrent Unit. In this model, the dual-branch encoder–decoder structure independently encodes radar echo images in the temporal and spatial domains, thereby avoiding interference between spatiotemporal information. Additionally, we introduce a Multi-Scale Channel Attention Module (MSCAM) to learn global and local feature information from each encoder layer, thereby enhancing focus on radar image details. Furthermore, we propose a Spatiotemporal Attention Gated Recurrent Unit (STAGRU) that integrates attention mechanisms to handle temporal evolution and spatial relationships within radar data, enabling the extraction of spatiotemporal information from a broader receptive field. Experimental results demonstrate the model's ability to accurately predict morphological changes and motion trajectories of radar images on real radar datasets, exhibiting superior performance compared to existing models in terms of various evaluation metrics. This study effectively improves the accuracy of precipitation forecasting in radar echo images, provides technical support for the short-range forecasting of precipitation, and has good application prospects. Radar signal has been shown as a promising source for human identification. In daily home sleep-monitoring scenarios, large-scale motion features may not always be practical, and the heart motion or respiration data may not be as ideal as they are in a controlled laboratory setting. Human identification from radar sequences is still a challenging task. Furthermore, there is a need to address the open-set recognition problem for radar sequences, which has not been sufficiently studied. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based approach for human identification using radar sequences captured during sleep in a daily home-monitoring setup. To enhance robustness, we preprocess the sequences to mitigate environmental interference before employing a deep convolution neural network for human identification. We introduce a Principal Component Space feature representation to detect unknown sequences. Our method is rigorously evaluated using both a public data set and a set of experimentally acquired radar sequences. We report a labeling accuracy of 98.2% and 96.8% on average for the two data sets, respectively, which outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques. Our method excels at accurately distinguishing unknown sequences from labeled ones, with nearly 100% detection of unknown samples and minimal misclassification of labeled samples as unknown. Ecosystem functions and services are severely threatened by unprecedented global loss in biodiversity. To counteract these trends, it is essential to develop systems to monitor changes in biodiversity for planning, evaluating, and implementing conservation and mitigation actions. However, the implementation of monitoring systems suffers from a trade‐off between grain (i.e., the level of detail), extent (i.e., the number of study sites), and temporal repetition. Here, we present an applied and realized networked sensor system for integrated biodiversity monitoring in the Nature 4.0 project as a solution to these challenges, which considers plants and animals not only as targets of investigation, but also as parts of the modular sensor network by carrying sensors. Our networked sensor system consists of three main closely interlinked components with a modular structure: sensors, data transmission, and data storage, which are integrated into pipelines for automated biodiversity monitoring. We present our own real‐world examples of applications, share our experiences in operating them, and provide our collected open data. Our flexible, low‐cost, and open‐source solutions can be applied for monitoring individual and multiple terrestrial plants and animals as well as their interactions. Ultimately, our system can also be applied to area‐wide ecosystem mapping tasks, thereby providing an exemplary cost‐efficient and powerful solution for biodiversity monitoring. Building upon our experiences in the Nature 4.0 project, we identified ten key challenges that need to be addressed to better understand and counteract the ongoing loss of biodiversity using networked sensor systems. To tackle these challenges, interdisciplinary collaboration, additional research, and practical solutions are necessary to enhance the capability and applicability of networked sensor systems for researchers and practitioners, ultimately further helping to ensure the sustainable management of ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services. NASA's multisatellite precipitation product from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) product, is validated over tropical and high-latitude oceans from June 2014 to August 2021. This oceanic study uses the GPM Validation Network's island-based radars to assess IMERG when the GPM Core Observatory's Microwave Imager (GMI) observes precipitation at these sites (i.e., IMERG-GMI). Error tracing from the Level 3 (gridded) IMERG V06B product back through to the input Level 2 (satellite footprint) Goddard Profiling Algorithm GMI V05 climate (GPROF-CLIM) product quantifies the errors separately associated with each step in the gridding and calibration of the estimates from GPROF-CLIM to IMERG-GMI. Mean relative bias results indicate that IMERG-GMI V06B overestimates Alaskan high-latitude oceanic precipitation by +147% and tropical oceanic precipitation by +12% with respect to surface radars. GPROF-CLIM V05 overestimates Alaskan oceanic precipitation by +15%, showing that the IMERG algorithm's calibration adjustments to the input GPROF-CLIM precipitation estimates increase the mean relative bias in this region. In contrast, IMERG adjustments are minimal over tropical waters with GPROF-CLIM overestimating oceanic precipitation by +14%. This study discovered that the IMERG V06B gridding process incorrectly geolocated GPROF-CLIM V05 precipitation estimates by 0.1° eastward in the latitude band 75°N–75°S, which has been rectified in the IMERG V07 algorithm. Correcting for the geolocation error in IMERG-GMI V06B improved oceanic statistics, with improvements greater in tropical waters than Alaskan waters. This error tracing approach enables a high-precision diagnosis of how different IMERG algorithm steps contribute to and mitigate errors, demonstrating the importance of collaboration between evaluation studies and algorithm developers. Significance Statement: Evaluation of IMERG's oceanic performance is very limited to date. This study uses the GPM Validation Network to conduct the first extensive assessment of IMERG V06B at its native resolution over both high-latitude and tropical oceans, and traces errors in IMERG-GMI back through to the input GPROF-CLIM GMI product. IMERG-GMI overestimates tropical oceanic precipitation (+12%) and strongly overestimates Alaskan oceanic precipitation (+147%) with respect to the island-based radars studied. IMERG's GMI estimates are assessed as these should be the optimal estimates within the multisatellite product due to the GMI's status as calibrator of the GPM passive microwave constellation. Spaceborne precipitation radars provide an unprecedented opportunity to study three-dimensional structure of precipitation, particularly over the open ocean where in-situ observations are rather meagre. In this study, instantaneous surface precipitation characteristics and their vertical structures during the tropical cyclones (TCs) over the North Indian Ocean (NIO) between 2014 and 2022 have been analysed using the dual-frequency precipitation radar onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory. Although stratiform precipitation accounts for more than 70% of total TC surface precipitation area, convective precipitation contributes about half of the total TC surface precipitation amount over the NIO. About 90% of stratiform TC precipitation area yields surface precipitation of less than 10 mm/hour. The vertical structures of stratiform and convective TC precipitation vary with surface precipitation intensity and have nearly similar characteristics over both basins of the NIO. This preliminary quantitative TC precipitation analysis would be useful for better understanding of precipitation processes during TCs over the NIO, and for further advancement in numerical models through improved parameterization schemes for TC precipitation forecasting. Precipitation nowcasting has important implications for urban operation and flood prevention. Radar echo extrapolation is a common method in precipitation nowcasting. Using deep learning models to extrapolate radar echo data has great potential. The increase of lead time leads to a weaker correlation between the real rainfall evolution and the generated images. The evolution information is easily lost during extrapolation, which is reflected as echo attenuation. Existing models, including generative adversarial network (GAN)-based models, have difficulty curbing attenuation, resulting in insufficient accuracy in rainfall prediction. To solve this issue, a spatiotemporal process enhancement network (GAN-argcPredNet v2.0) based on GAN-argcPredNet v1.0 has been designed. GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 curbs attenuation by avoiding blurring or maintaining the intensity. A spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC) prediction network is designed as the generator. By suppressing the blurring effect of rain distribution and reducing the negative bias by STIC attention, the generator generates more accurate images. Furthermore, the discriminator is a channel–spatial (CS) convolution network. The discriminator enhances the discrimination of echo information and provides better guidance to the generator in image generation by CS attention. The experiments are based on the radar dataset of southern China. The results show that GAN-argcPredNet v2.0 performs better than other models. In heavy rainfall prediction, compared with the baseline, the probability of detection (POD), the critical success index (CSI), the Heidke skill score (HSS) and bias score increase by 18.8 %, 17.0 %, 17.2 % and 26.3 %, respectively. The Goddard Profiling algorithm (GPROF) converts radiometer observations from Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) constellation satellites into precipitation estimates. Typically, high-quality ground-based estimates serve as reference to evaluate GPROF's performance. To provide a fair comparison, the ground-based estimates are often spatially aligned to GPROF. However, GPROF combines observations from various sensors and channels, each associated with a distinct footprint. Consequently, uncertainties related to the representativeness of the sampled areas are introduced in addition to the uncertainty when converting brightness temperatures into precipitation intensities. The exact contribution of resampling precipitation estimates, required to spatially and temporally align different resolutions when combining or comparing precipitation observations, to the overall uncertainty remains unknown. Here, we analyze the current performance of GPROF over the Netherlands during a 4-year period (2017–2020) while investigating the uncertainty related to sampling. The latter is done by simulating the reference precipitation as satellite footprints that vary in size, geometry, and applied weighting technique. Only GPROF estimates based on observations from the conical-scanning radiometers of the GPM constellation are used. The reference estimates are gauge-adjusted radar precipitation estimates from two ground-based weather radars from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). Echo top heights (ETHs) retrieved from the same radars are used to classify the precipitation as shallow, medium, or deep. Spatial averaging methods (Gaussian weighting vs. arithmetic mean) minimally affect the magnitude of the precipitation estimates. Footprint size has a higher impact but cannot explain all discrepancies between the ground- and satellite-based estimates. Additionally, the discrepancies between GPROF and the reference are largest for low ETHs, while the relative bias between the different footprint sizes and implemented weighting methods increase with increasing ETHs. Lastly, our results do not show a clear difference between coastal and land simulations. We conclude that the uncertainty introduced by merging different channels and sensors cannot fully explain the discrepancies between satellite- and ground-based precipitation estimates. Hence, uncertainties related to the retrieval algorithm and environmental conditions are found to be more prominent than resampling uncertainties, in particular for shallow and light precipitation. Observations of the vertical wind profile in Chongqing, a typical mountainous city in China, are important, but they are sparse and have low resolution. To obtain more wind profile data, this study matched the Aeolus track with ground-based wind observation sites in Chongqing in 2021. Based on the obtained results, verification and quality control studies were conducted on the wind observations of a wind profile radar (WPR) with radiosonde (RS) data, and a comparison of the Aeolus Mie-cloudy and Rayleigh-clear wind products (Aeolus winds measured in cloudy and aerosol-rich atmospheric conditions from Mie-channel-collected data and winds measured in clear-air conditions from Rayleigh-collected data) with WPR data was then performed. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: (1) a clear correlation between the wind observations of WPR and RS was found, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.71. Their root mean square deviation increased with height but decreased at heights between 3 and 4 km. (2) After quality control using Gaussian filtering (GF) and empirical orthogonal function construction (EOFc; G=87.23 %) of the WPR data, the R between the WPR and RS reached 0.83 and 0.95, respectively. The vertical distribution showed that GF could better retain the characteristics of WPR wind observations but with limited improvement in decreasing deviations, whereas EOFc performed better in decreasing deviations but considerably modified the original characteristics of the wind field, especially regarding intensive vertical wind shear in strong convective weather processes. (3) In terms of the differences between the Aeolus and WPR data, 56.0 % and 67.8 % deviations were observed within ±5 m s -1 for Rayleigh-clear and Mie-cloudy winds (Aeolus winds measured in cloudy and aerosol-rich atmospheric conditions from Mie-channel-collected data and winds measured in clear-air conditions from Rayleigh-collected data) vs WPR winds, respectively. Vertically, large mean differences of both Rayleigh-clean and Mie-cloudy winds versus WPR winds appeared below 1.5 km, which is attributed to the prevailing quiet and small winds within the boundary layer in Chongqing; in this case the movement of molecules and aerosols is mostly affected by irregular turbulence. Additionally, large mean differences at a height range between 4 and 8 km for Mie-cloudy versus WPR winds may be related to the high content of cloud liquid water in the middle troposphere of Chongqing. (4) The differences in both Rayleigh-clear and Mie-cloudy versus WPR winds had changed. Deviations of 58.9 % and 59.6 % were concentrated within ±5 m s -1 for Rayleigh-clear versus WPR winds with GF and EOFc quality control, respectively. In contrast, 69.1 % and 70.2 % of deviations appeared within ±5 m s -1 for Rayleigh-clear versus WPR and EOFc WPR winds, respectively. The Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI)-based four- and three-dimensional ensemble–variational (4DEnVar and 3DEnVar) methods are compared as a smoother and a filter, respectively, for rapidly changing storms using the convective-scale direct radar reflectivity data assimilation (DA) framework. Two sets of experiments with varying DA window lengths (WLs; 20, 40, 100, and 160 min) and radar observation intervals (RIs; 20 and 5 min) are conducted for the 5–6 May 2019 case. The RI determines the temporal resolution of ensemble perturbations for the smoother and the DA interval for the filter spanning the WL. For experiments with a 20-min RI, evaluations suggest that the filter and the smoother have comparable performance with a 20-min WL; however, extending the WL results in the outperformance of the filter over the smoother. Diagnostics reveal that the degradation of the smoother is attributed to the increased degree of nonlinearity and the issue of time-independent localization as the WL extends. Evaluations for experiments with different RIs under the same WL indicate that the outperformance of the filter over the smoother diminishes for most forecast hours at thresholds of 30 dBZ and above when shortening the RI. Diagnostics show that more frequent interruptions of the model introduce model imbalance for the filter, and the increased temporal resolution of ensemble perturbations enhances the degree of nonlinearity for the smoother. The impact of model imbalance on the filter overwhelms the enhanced nonlinearity on the smoother as the RI reduces. Significance Statement: The background uncertainties of rapidly changing storms suffer from fast error growth and high degrees of nonlinearities during the data assimilation (DA) period. Two variants of the ensemble-based DA method can account for such temporal evolution. The smoother uses background ensemble from multiple observation times over an assimilation period to estimate the propagation of statistics. The filter frequently calculates the statistics at multiple observation times over the same period. Current comparisons of the smoother and the filter were mostly performed using simple models; however, unknowns remain for convection-allowing forecasts with additional complexities. This study compares the filter and the smoother for the convective-scale analysis and prediction using a real-data study and finds that the comparison varies with the assimilation period and the observation interval. This study uses a new, unique dataset created by combining multi-Doppler radar wind and reflectivity analysis, diabatic Lagrangian analysis (DLA) retrievals of temperature and water substance, and a complex hail trajectory model to create millions of numerically simulated hail trajectories in the Kingfisher, Oklahoma, supercell on 29 May 2012. The DLA output variables are used to obtain a realistic, 4D depiction of the storm's thermal and hydrometeor structure as required input to the detailed hail growth trajectory model. Hail embryos are initialized in the hail growth module every 3 min of the radar analysis period (2251–0000 UTC) to produce over 2.7 million hail trajectories. A spatial integration technique considering all trajectories is used to identify locations within the supercell where melted particles and subsevere and severe hailstones reside in their lowest and highest concentrations. It is found that hailstones are more likely to reside for longer periods closer to the downshear updraft within the midlevel mesocyclone in a region of decelerated midlevel mesocyclonic horizontal flow, termed the downshear deceleration zone (DDZ). Additionally, clusters of trajectories are analyzed using a trajectory clustering method. Trajectory clusters show there are many trajectory pathways that result in hailstones ≥ 4.5 cm, including trajectories that begin upshear of the updraft away from ideal growth conditions and trajectories that grow within the DDZ. There are also trajectory clusters with similar shapes that experience widely different environmental and hailstone characteristics along the trajectory. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to understand how hail grew in a thunderstorm that was observed by numerous instruments. The observations were input into a hail trajectory model to simulate hail growth. We found a part of the storm near the updraft where hailstones could remain aloft longer and therefore grow larger. Most modeled severe hailstones were found in the storm in this region. Doppler weather radars are powerful tools for investigating the inner-core structure and intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs). The Doppler velocity can provide quantitative information on the vortex structure in the TCs. The generalized velocity track display (GVTD) technique has been used to retrieve the axisymmetric circulations and asymmetric tangential flows in the TCs from ground-based single-Doppler radar observations. GVTD can have limited applicability to asymmetric vortices due to the closure assumption of no asymmetric radial flows. The present study proposes a new closure formulation that includes asymmetric radial flows, based on the Helmholtz decomposition. Here it is assumed that the horizontal flow is predominantly rotational and expressed with a streamfunction, but limited inclusion of wavenumber-1 divergence is available. Unlike the original GVTD, the decomposition introduces consistency along the radius by solving all equations simultaneously. The new approach, named GVTD-X, is applied to analytical vortices and a real TC with asymmetric structures. This approach makes the retrieval of axisymmetric flow relatively insensitive to the contamination from asymmetric flows and to small errors in storm center location. For an analytical vortex with a wavenumber-2 asymmetry, the maximum relative error of the axisymmetric tangential wind retrieved by GVTD-X is less than 2% at the radius of the maximum wind speed. In practical applications, errors can be evaluated by comparing results for different maximum wavenumbers. When applied to a real TC, GVTD-X largely suppressed an artificial periodic fluctuation that occurs in GVTD from the aliasing of the neglected asymmetric radial flows. Significance Statement: In tropical cyclone (TC) wind retrievals from single-Doppler weather radar observations, closure assumptions are required for the retrieval equations. The present study proposes a new closure allowing asymmetric radial winds and improving retrievals for TC winds in the previously developed technique. The relative error of the axisymmetric tangential wind in idealized vortices from the new approach is less than 2% at the radius of the maximum wind speed. In applying to a real TC with an elliptical eyewall, we found that the new approach can largely suppress an artificial evolution of the tangential winds in the previous retrieval technique. The scientific community has long acknowledged the importance of high-temporal-resolution radar observations to advance science research and improve high-impact weather prediction. Development of innovative rapid-scan radar technologies over the past two decades has enabled radar volume scans of 10–60 s compared to 3–5 min with traditional parabolic dish research radars and the WSR-88D radar network. This review examines the impact of rapid-scan radar technology, defined as radars collecting volume scans in 1 min or less, on atmospheric science research spanning different subdisciplines and evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the use of rapid-scan radars. In particular, a significant body of literature has accumulated for tornado and severe thunderstorm research and forecasting applications, in addition to a growing number of studies of convection. Convection research has benefited substantially from more synchronous vertical views, but could benefit more substantially by leveraging multi-Doppler wind retrievals and complementary in situ and remote sensors. In addition, several years of forecast evaluation studies are synthesized from radar testbed experiments, and the benefits of assimilating rapid-scan radar observations are analyzed. Although the current body of literature reflects the considerable utility of rapid-scan radars to science research, a weakness is that limited advancements in understanding of the physical mechanisms behind observed features have been enabled. There is considerable opportunity to bridge the gap in physical understanding with the current technology using coordinated efforts to include rapid-scan radars in field campaigns and expanding the breadth of meteorological phenomena studied. Significance Statement: Recently developed rapid-scan radar technologies, capable of collecting volumetric (i.e., three-dimensional) measurements in 10–60 s, have improved temporal sampling of weather phenomena. This review examines the impact of these radar observations from the past two decades on science research and emerging operational capabilities. Substantial breadth and impact of research is evident for tornado research and forecasting applications, in addition to documentation of other rapidly evolving phenomena associated with deep convection, such as tornadoes, hail, lightning, and tropical cyclones. This review identifies the strengths and weaknesses of how these radars have been used in scientific research to inform future studies, emerging from the increasing availability and capability of rapid-scan radars. In this study, we evaluate the ability of the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model to forecast cloud characteristics through comparison of observed and simulated satellite brightness temperatures (BTs) and radar reflectivity during different weather phenomena in December 2021: the Mayfield, Kentucky, tornado on 11 December, a heavy snow event in Minnesota from 10 to 11 December, and the Midwest derecho on 15 December. This is done to illustrate the importance of examining model accuracy across a range of weather phenomena. Observation and forecast objects were created using the Method for Object-Based Diagnostic Evaluation (MODE). HRRR accurately depicted the spatial displacements between observation cloud (defined using BTs) and radar reflectivity objects, namely, the centers of cloud objects are to the east of the radar objects for the tornado and derecho events, and generally west of the radar objects for the snow event. However, HRRR had higher (less intense) simulated BTs and higher (more intense) radar reflectivity than the observations for the tornado event. Simulated radar reflectivity is higher and BTs are lower than the observations during the middle of the snow event. Also, simulated radar reflectivity is higher and BTs are lower than the observations during the derecho event. Of the three weather events, the HRRR forecasts are most accurate for the snow event, based on the object-based threat score, followed by the derecho and tornado events. The tornado event has lower accuracy because matches between paired simulated and observation objects are worse than for the snow event, with less similarity in size forecast objects and greater distance between paired object centers. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to assess the accuracy of forecast cloud and radar objects, defined using simulated satellite brightness temperatures and radar reflectivity, from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model. This assessment was conducted for a tornado, snow, and derecho event from December 2021. Results from these three events indicate that the HRRR model accurately represents the observed displacement between the center of cloud and radar objects for the tornado and derecho events, and is the most accurate overall for the snow event. To effectively utilize waste mask materials in road engineering and minimize resource waste, the melt-blown fabric (MBF) of waste masks was utilized to modify the virgin bitumen. The preparation process of MBF-modified bitumen was investigated, and the physical and rheological properties of bitumen were measured. Subsequently, the blending mechanism during preparation and the dispersion morphology of the modifier were explored. Finally, the pavement performance of the mixture was investigated, and a radar chart analysis was performed to quantitatively assess the effects of MBF modification. Results suggested that the recommended preparation process of shear time, shear rate, and shear temperature was 170 °C, 4000 r/min, and 15 min, respectively. MBF enhanced the high-temperature stability of the binder and weakened the temperature susceptibility. The modification was primarily a physical process. No network structure and agglomeration formed in the bitumen after modification. The addition of MBF significantly improved the resistance of the asphalt mixture to a high-temperature deformation and water damage but harmed its low-temperature crack resistance. The comprehensive assessment results of 0% ( f 1 ), 1% ( f 2 ), 3% ( f 3 ), and 5% ( f 4 ) MBF to improve the properties of the mixture were in the following order: f 3 > f 4 > f 2 > f 1 , where the impact of 3% MBF was the most significant, followed by 5% and 1% MBF. The surface currents in coastal areas are closely related to the ecological environment and human activities, and are influenced by both local and remote factors of different timescales, resulting in complex genesis and multi-timescale characteristics. In this research, 9-year-long, hourly high-frequency radar (HFR) surface current observations are utilized together with satellite remote sensing reanalysis products and mooring data, and based on the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) and correlation analysis, we revealed the multi-timescale characteristics of the surface currents in Fremantle Sea (32°S), Southwestern Australia, and explored the corresponding driving factors as well as the impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the nearshore currents. Results show that the currents on the slope are dominated by the southward Leeuwin Current (LC), and the currents within the shelf are dominated by winds, which are subject to obvious diurnal and seasonal variations. The strong bathymetry variation there, from a wide shelf in the north to a narrow shelf in this study region, also plays an important role, resulting in the frequent occurrence of nearshore eddies. In addition, the near-zonal winds south of 30°S in winter contribute to the interannual variability of the Leeuwin Current at Fremantle, especially in 2011, when the onshore shelf circulation is particularly strong because of the climatic factors, together with the wind-driven offshore circulation, which results in significant and long-lasting eddies. The southward Leeuwin Current along Southwestern Australia shows a strong response to interannual climatic variability. During La Niña years, the equatorial thermal anomalies generate the westward anomalies in winds and equatorial currents, which in turn strengthen the Leeuwin Current and trigger the cross-shelf current as well as downwelling within the shelf at Fremantle, whereas during El Niño years, the climate anomalies and the response of coastal currents are opposite. This paper provides insights into the multi-timescale nature of coastal surface currents and the relative importance of different driving mechanisms. It also demonstrates the potential of HFR to reveal the response of nearshore currents to climate anomalies when combined with other multivariate data. The performance of a high-frequency (HF) radar network situated within the Pearl River Estuary from 17 July to 13 August 2022 is described via a comparison with seven acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs). The radar network consists of six OSMAR-S100 compact HF radars, with a transmitting frequency of 13–16 MHz and a direction-finding technique. Both the radial currents and vector velocities showed good agreement with the ADCP results (coefficient of determination r2: 0.42–0.78; RMS difference of radials: 11–21.6 c m   s − 1 ; bearing offset Δ θ : − 4.8 ° – 16.1 ° ; complex correlation coefficient γ : 0.62–0.96; and phase angle α : −24.3 ° – 17.8 ° ). For these radars, the Δ θ values are not constant but vary with azimuthal angles. The relative positions between the HF radar and ADCPs, as well as factors such as the presence of island terrain obstructing the signal, significantly influence the errors. The results of spectral analysis also demonstrate a high level of consistency and the capability of HF radar to capture diurnal and semidiurnal tidal frequencies. The tidal characteristics and the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) results measured by the HF radars also resemble the ADCPs and align with the characteristics of the estuarine current field. Millimeter-wave radar and optical cameras are one of the primary sensing combinations for autonomous platforms such as self-driving vehicles and disaster monitoring robots. The millimeter-wave radar odometry can perform self-pose estimation and environmental mapping. However, cumulative errors can arise during extended measurement periods. In particular scenes where loop closure conditions are absent and visual geometric features are discontinuous, existing loop detection methods based on back-end optimization face challenges. To address this issue, this study introduces a correlative scan matching (CSM) pose estimation method that integrates visual and radar line features (VRL-SLAM). By making use of the pose output and the occupied grid map generated by the front end of the millimeter-wave radar's simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), it compensates for accumulated errors by matching discontinuous visual line features and radar line features. Firstly, a pose estimation framework that integrates visual and radar line features was proposed to reduce the accumulated errors generated by the odometer. Secondly, an adaptive Hough transform line detection method (A-Hough) based on the projection of the prior radar grid map was introduced, eliminating interference from non-matching lines, enhancing the accuracy of line feature matching, and establishing a collection of visual line features. Furthermore, a Gaussian mixture model clustering method based on radar cross-section (RCS) was proposed, reducing the impact of radar clutter points online feature matching. Lastly, actual data from two scenes were collected to compare the algorithm proposed in this study with the CSM algorithm and RI-SLAM.. Radar emitter signal intra-pulse modulation recognition is important for modern electronic reconnaissance systems to analyze target radar systems. In the actual environment, the intra-pulse modulations of the sampled radar emitter signals contain not only the known types in the library but also the unknown types. Therefore, the existing recognition methods, which are based on a closed set, cannot recognize the unknown samples. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we proposed a method for radar emitter signal intra-pulse modulation open set recognition. The proposed method could classify the known modulations and identify the unknown modulation by using an original deep neural network-based recognition model trained on a closed set, estimating the signal-to-noise ratio, and calculating the reconstruction loss by an encoder–decoder model. For a given sample, the original deep neural network-based recognition model will label it as a certain known class temporarily. By estimating the SNR of the sample and calculating the reconstruction loss by inputting the sample to the corresponding encoder–decoder model related to the temporary predicted known class, whether the sample belongs to the predicted temporary known class or the unknown class will be confirmed. Experiments were conducted with five different openness conditions. A high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) is the only sensor that provides inexpensive surveillance for up to 200 nautical miles (NM) of the exclusive economic zone in the 3–5 MHz band. However, because of its long wavelength, its angular resolution is low. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is an attractive method to improve angular resolution. This paper proposes MIMO waveforms and their processing that can be used in HFSWR systems. This dual modulation method applies linear frequency modulation to each pulse and orthogonal polyphase codes for a few consecutive pulses to enable MIMO processing. The conventional back projection (BP) algorithm is an accurate time-domain algorithm widely used for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar imaging, owing to its independence of antenna array configuration. The time-delay curve correction back projection (TCC-BP) algorithm greatly reduces the computational complexity of BP but suffers from spatial-variant correction, sidelobe interference and background noise due to the use of coherent superposition of echo time-delay curves. In this article, a residual attention U-Net-based (RAU-Net) MIMO radar imaging method that adapts complex noisy scenarios with spatial variation and sidelobe interference is proposed. On the basis of the U-Net underlying structure, we develop the RAU-Net with two modules: a residual unit with identity mapping and a dual attention module to obtain resolution spatial-variant correction and denoising on real-world MIMO radar images. The network realizes MIMO radar imaging based on the TCC-BP algorithm and substantially reduces the total computational time of the BP algorithm on the basis of improving the imaging resolution and denoising capability. Extensive experiments on the simulated and measured data demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms both the traditional methods and learning-imaging methods in terms of spatial-variant correction, denoising and computational complexity. Weather radars play a crucial role in the monitoring of severe convective weather. However, due to their limited detection range, they cannot conduct an effective monitoring in remote offshore areas. Therefore, this paper utilized UNet++ to establish a model for retrieving radar composite reflectivity based on Himawari-9 satellite datasets. In the process of comparative analysis, we found that both satellite and radar data exhibited significant diurnal cycles, but there were notable differences in their variation characteristics. To address this, we established four comparative models to test the influence of latitude and diurnal cycles on the inversion results. The results showed that adding the distribution map of the minimum brightness temperature at the corresponding time in the model could effectively improve the model's performance in both spatial and temporal dimensions, reduce the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the model, and enhance the accuracy of severe convective weather monitoring. In this work, we present the preliminary results of radar observations of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) carried out by European radio telescopes in the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA) project "NEO observation concepts for radar systems", aimed at deriving the functional requirements of a planetary radar system, evaluating the available European assets to perform NEO radar observations, and carrying out test radar campaigns. In the first part of the project, we executed the performance analysis of a possible European planetary radar system. Instrumental features, as much as issues like the impact of weather conditions on signal propagation at different radio frequencies, were considered. This paper focused on the test campaigns, performed in the years 2021–2022 in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which led to the observation of several asteroids including 2021 AF8, (4660) Nereus, and 2005 LW3, which allowed us to derive astrometric measurements, as well as to measure physical properties, such as rotation periods, and observe how one of the targets is actually a binary asteroid. The obtained results demonstrated that European radio astronomical dishes, although employed only as receivers (in bistatic or multistatic configurations) and for a limited amount of time, are able to provide a significant contribution to the constitution of a European network to increase the opportunities for NEO monitoring and studies, if a transmitting antenna—equipped with a suitable high-power transmitter—were made available. Poseidon-4 is a dual-frequency redundant radar altimeter on board the European Commission Copernicus Programme Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite, that represents a significant breakthrough with respect to its predecessors Jason-class altimeters due to its digital architecture and to its innovative measurements and calibration modes. In the framework of the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich commissioning preparatory activities, CNES has contracted CLS for the development of a Sentinel-6 Processing Prototype (S6PP) application. S6PP is a multi-chain processing suite able to process Sentinel-6 Level-1A and Level-1B data products up to Level-2. The novel algorithms developed in the CNES/CLS research and development activities are implemented within S6PP and validated to support the different thematic applications (in particular inland water and ocean) and in view of promoting them for possible implementation in the operational ground segment. The present work covers in particular the main results over open ocean for the main altimetric geophysical variables over the sea surface (sea surface height anomaly, significant wave-height, sigma-nought and wind speed) derived by the Low-Resolution Mode (LRM) and High-Resolution Mode (HRM) chains of S6PP in terms of precision, accuracy, spectral content and measurement stability. Given the reported variation of the payload in-orbit temperatures along with the reported instrumental ageing, and given the tight requirement to measure the GMSL (Global Mean Sea Level) in seamless continuity with Jason-3, the clear goal for S6PP was to process the S6-MF data with the minimum possible level of approximations along the processing pipeline but still maintaining a very efficient prototype from the computational point of view. For this scope, a novel and computationally efficient numerical retracking scheme with interface to the in-flight PTR (Point Target Response) provided by the instrument calibration chain has been put in place within S6PP for both the Low-Resolution and High-Resolution modes whereas the Delay-Doppler beam-forming is carried out by applying the range walk correction based on a computationally efficient algorithm (Chirp Zeta-Transform). The impact of the range walk correction and of the in-flight PTR interface is assessed for HRM and LRM, respectively. The paper shows that the proposed processing baseline ensures a dataset robust from the currently known instrumental degradation or ageing issues, both in LRM and HRM mode and, once this is done, that Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich global mean sea level measurement is in line with the one measured by Jason-3. Three cases of microphysical characteristics and kinematic structures in the negative temperature region of summer mesoscale cloud systems over the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) were investigated using X-band dual-polarization radar. The time-height series of radar physical variables and mesoscale horizontal divergence δ ¯ derived by quasi-vertical profiles (QVPs) indicated that the dendritic growth layer (DGL, −20°C to −10°C) was ubiquitous, with large-value zones of KDP (specific differential phase), ZDR (differential reflectivity), or both, and corresponded to various dynamic fields (ascent or descent). Ascents in the DGL of cloud systems with vigorous vertical development were coincident with large-value zones of ZDR, signifying ice crystals with a large axis ratio, but with no obvious large values of KDP, which differs from previous findings. It is speculated that ascent in the DGL promoted ice crystals to undergo further growth before sinking. If there was descent in the DGL, a high echo top corresponded to large values of KDP, denoting a large number concentration of ice crystals; but with the echo top descending, small values of KDP formed. This is similar to previous results and reveals that a high echo top is conducive to the generation of ice crystals. When ice particles fall to low levels (−10°C to 0°C), they grow through riming, aggregation, or deposition, and may not be related to the kinematic structure. This article discusses the importance of radar systems and processing methods for space situational awareness (SSA). It highlights the vulnerability of the space environment due to the increasing number of satellites and space debris, as well as the growing threat of attacks. Radar sensors are particularly useful for SSA because they can detect small debris over long ranges and accurately track objects. The article presents various topics related to radar systems for SSA, including ground-based and space-based radar, multistatic radar networks, and cognitive radar and deep-learning methods. Although radar sensors have been known for their robustness in challenging environmental conditions, they face difficulties in distinguishing between upper structure (US), such as road signs, traffic lights, overpasses, and pedestrian bridges, and forward vehicle (FV). This misclassification can lead to false alarms and unwanted braking events. Thermal wave radar (TWR) thermography is a high-efficient nondestructive testing technique to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and to enhance target detection capability. However, the detection of subsurface defects, especially small-size defects, usually requires a distinctively high SNR and depth resolvability. This paper proposed an orthogonal phase-coded linear frequency modulated (OPCLFM) excitation waveform, which has significantly improved the SNR and depth resolvability of TWR compared to the LFM waveform. The pulse compression quality of the OPCLFM waveform was initially evaluated through a 1D thermal wave analytical model of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate. Results show that the OPCLFM waveform combined with the Kaiser window function compresses the largest sidelobe at least by 18.39 dB compared to the LFM waveform. Furthermore, the superior depth resolvability performance of the OPCLFM waveform was also validated by 3D finite element simulation. Finally, the effect of thermal conductivity on the depth resolvability performance of the OPCLFM waveform was evaluated quantitatively by a delaminated CFRP laminate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic participant classification is crucial in autonomous driving perception. Millimeter wave radio detection and ranging radar is a cost-effective and powerful method to perform the task in adverse traffic scenarios, especially in bad inclement weather (e.g. fog, snow and rain) and poor lighting conditions. This paper presents an intelligent target classification algorithm for 77G radar based on correction data set. First, in order to handle the problem that the original data set may easily be interfered by obstacles, the angle information is filtered by analyzing the spatial information of radar signals, which means the interference clutter of obstacles can be effectively removed. Second, the primary data set is corrected using the significant difference between the micro-Doppler of the human body and car. Finally, the characteristic information of the radar signal is extracted, including distance, speed, orientation, micro-Doppler and reflection intensity, and the obtained data sets containing three types of targets (vehicles, human bodies and obstacles) are generated. The problem of estimating soil moisture by remote (satellite) methods remains topical. To do this, regression models based on the correlation between radar data and ground-based measurements of soil moisture are constructed. Ground-based measurements were taken at two stations in Germany (Falkenberg and Gevenich), which are a part of the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). Sentinel-1 satellite data are used as radar data. Multiple regressions with a determination coefficient up to 0.91 are constructed. It is proposed to use in regressions not only radar, but also meteorological data, which makes it possible to increase the coefficient of determination and reduce the standard error of regression. For the possible spread of regressions obtained for one territory to another, two criteria are proposed: proximity of the values of the Selyaninov hydrothermal coefficient (HTC) and similarity of the soil texture. According to these conditions, two stations in Ryazan oblast and in Kalmykia were chosen. Their archival information on soil moisture is contained in the ISMN database up to 1998. An estimate of the processes of afforestation and forest restoration after fires is relevant for a significant territory of Russia, including due to the issue of carbon neutrality. In this paper we examine the possibilities of radar monitoring of the afforestation process based on the Cloude–Pottier decomposition of dual-polarization L-band data time series. Preliminary segmentation is performed based on the minimal radar backscatter values for the entire observation period. This makes it possible to separate into a separate class treeless areas and open forests, both those that existed before the beginning of the study and those that formed later. Next, polarimetric decomposition is performed by the Cloude–Pottier method to obtain parameters H (entropy) and α (scattering angle) and form time series from them. Research showed the fundamental possibility of monitoring forest dynamics on the H-α plane, where the points of the test plots form characteristic time tracks. A mature dense forest, the characteristics of which are assumed to be constant, was used as a reference for estimating the rate of change on the H-α plane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents studies on using Sentinel-1 imagery data to determine the attributes of mixed forest stands. The fieldwork is carried out in Kostroma, Vologda, and Arkhangelsk oblasts and the Udmurt Republic. The study reveals that quantitative and qualitative forest characteristics correlate with radar survey parameters; the value of this correlation is identified. Quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE) can be further improved using estimation algorithms derived from localized raindrop size distribution (DSD) observations. In this study, DSD measurements from two disdrometer stations within Metro Manila during the Southwest monsoon (SWM) period were used to investigate the microphysical properties of rainfall and develop localized dual-polarimetric relations for different radar bands and rainfall types. Observations show that the DSD in Metro Manila is more distributed to larger diameters compared to Southern Luzon and neighboring countries and regions in the Western Pacific. This is reflected by the relatively higher mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) and smaller shape (μ) and slope (Λ) parameters measured in the region. The average values of Dm and normalized intercept parameter (Nw) in convective rain samples also suggest that convective rains in Metro Manila are highly influenced by both continental and oceanic convective processes. Dual-polarimetric variables simulated using the T-matrix scattering method showed good agreement with disdrometer-derived reflectivity (ZH) values. The 0.5 dB and 0.3° km−1 thresholds for the differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) based on the blended algorithm of Cifelli (J Atmos Ocean Technol 28:352-364, 2011) and Thompson et al. (2017) are proven to be useful since the utility of the dual-polarimetric variables as rainfall estimators are shown to have dependencies on the radar band and rainfall type. Evaluation of the QPE products with respect to the C-band shows that R (KDP, ZDR) has the best performance among the dual-pol relations and statistically outperformed the conventional Marshall & Palmer relation [R(ZMP)]. The results show that dual-polarimetric variables such as ZDR and KDP can better represent the DSD properties compared to one-dimensional Z, hence providing more accurate QPE products than the conventional R(Z) relations. The problem of accurate source localization has been an area of focus in high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) applications. However, antenna pattern distortion (APD) decreases the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation performance of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Up to now, limited studies have been conducted on the calibration of antenna pattern distortion for phased arrays in HFSWR. In this paper, we first analyze the effect of APD on the performance of the MUSIC algorithm through estimation of accuracy and angular resolution. We demonstrate that using the actual pattern (or say APD) can improve DOA estimation performance. Based on this proposition, we propose a novel iterative calibration method that employs the first-order sea clutter data and can jointly estimate DOA and APD in an iterative way. To obtain available calibration points, we introduce the extraction methods of the first-order sea clutter spectrum and single-DOA spectrum points. Meanwhile, in each iteration, the Beamspace MUSIC algorithm and artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) are utilized to estimate the DOA and APD, respectively. Numerical results reveal a good coincidence between the actual pattern and the estimated APD. We also apply this method to process the experimental data of HFSWR. We obtain the APD vector of the real phased array and improve the direction-finding performance of several real ship targets using this vector. In order to achieve miniaturization, short-range radar (SRR) generally adopts millimeter-wave (MMW) radar with a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) system, which may make the stop–go–stop assumption in traditional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging algorithms invalid. In addition, in order to observe a large enough area, SRR often needs a wide radar beam, which may cause serious range–azimuth coupling when using SRR for SAR imaging. The above two problems may make the traditional SAR imaging algorithm invalid in SRR SAR imaging. Taking the SRR SAR imaging application into account, traditional frequency domain SAR imaging algorithms are analyzed and improved in this paper. Firstly, the intra-pulse motion (IPM) caused by the FMCW system and the two-dimensional coupling (TDC) in the case of a wide beam are analyzed. Subsequently, the applicability of the range Doppler algorithm (RDA), the frequency scaling algorithm (FSA) and the range migration algorithm (RMA) for SRR SAR is analyzed. Then, improvement measures are put forward to address the aliasing and folding phenomena caused by the wide-beam problem in the FSA and RMA, respectively. In this study, we utilized dual-polarization weather radar and disdrometer data to investigate the kinematic and microphysical characteristics of an extreme heavy rainfall event that occurred on 20 July 2021, in Zhengzhou. The results are as follows: FY-2G satellite images showed that extremely heavy rainfall mainly occurred during the merging period of medium- and small-scale convective cloud clusters. The merging of these cloud clusters enhanced the rainfall intensity. The refined three-dimensional wind field, as retrieved by the multi-Doppler radar, revealed a prominent mesoscale vortex and convergence structure at the extreme rainfall stage. This led to echo stagnation, resulting in localized extreme heavy rainfall. We explored the formation mechanism of the notable ZDR arc feature of dual-polarization variables during this phase. It was revealed that during the record-breaking hourly rainfall event in Zhengzhou (20 July 2021, 16:00–17:00 Beijing Time), the warm rain process dominated. Effective collision–coalescence processes, producing a high concentration of medium- to large-sized raindrops, significantly contributed to heavy rainfall at the surface. From an observational perspective, it was revealed that raindrops exhibited significant collision interactions during their descent. Moreover, a conceptual model for the kinematic and microphysical characteristics of this extreme rainfall event was established, aiming to provide technical support for monitoring and early warning of similar extreme rainfall events. With the widespread application and functional complexity of deep neural networks (DNNs), the demand for training samples is increasing. This elevated requirement also extends to DNN-based SAR object detection. Most public SAR object detection datasets are oriented to marine targets such as ships, while data sets oriented to land targets are relatively rare, though they are an effective way to improve the land object detection capability of deep models through SAR sample generation. In this paper, a synthesis generation collaborative SAR sample augmentation framework is proposed to achieve flexible and diverse high-quality sample augmentation. First, a semantic-layout-guided image synthesis strategy is proposed to generate diverse detection samples. The issues of object location rationality and object layout diversity are also addressed. Meanwhile, a pix2pixGAN network guided by layout maps is utilized to achieve diverse background augmentation. Second, a progressive training strategy of diffusion models is proposed to achieve semantically controllable SAR sample generation to further improve the diversity of scene clutter. Finally, a sample cleaning method considering distribution migration and network filtering is employed to further improve the quality of detection samples. The experimental results show that this semantic synthesis generation method can outperform existing sample augmentation methods, leading to a comprehensive improvement in the accuracy metrics of classical detection networks. Precise knowledge of the antenna pointing direction is a key facet to ensure the accuracy of observations from scanning weather radars. The sun is an often-used reference point to aid accurate alignment of weather radar systems and is particularly useful when observed as interference during normal scanning operations. In this study, we combine two online solar interference approaches to determine the pointing accuracy of an X-band mobile weather radar system deployed for 26 months in northern England (54.517°N, 3.615°W). During the deployment, several shifts in the tilt of the radar system are diagnosed between site visits. One extended period of time (>11 months) is shown to have a changing tilt that is independent of human intervention. To verify the corrections derived from this combined approach, quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) from the radar system are compared to surface observations: an approach that takes advantage of the variations in the magnitude of partial beam blockage corrections required due to tilting of the radar system close to mountainous terrain. The observed improvements in QPE performance after correction support the use of the derived tilt corrections for further applications using the corrected dataset. Finally, recommendations for future deployments are made, with particular focus on higher latitudes where solar interference spikes show more seasonality than those at mid-latitudes. The proliferation of radar technology has given rise to a growing demand for advanced, high-performance transmitter front-ends operating in the 24 GHz frequency band. This paper presents a design analysis of a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TX) front-end operated at a 24 GHz frequency and designed using 65 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology for radar applications. The proposed TX front-end design includes the integration of an up-conversion mixer and power amplifier (PA). The up-conversion mixer is a Gilbert cell-based design that translates the 2.4 GHz intermediate frequency (IF) signal and 21.6 GHz local oscillator (LO) signal to the 24 GHz RF output signal. The mixer is designed with a novel technique that includes a duplex transconductance path (DTP) for enhancing the mixer's linearity. The DTP of the mixer includes a primary transconductance path (PTP) and a secondary transconductance path (STP). The PTP incorporates a common source (CS) amplifier, while the STP incorporates an improved cross-quad transconductor (ICQT). The integrated PA in the TX front-end is a class AB tunable two-stage PA that can be tuned with the help of varactors as a synchronous mode to increase the PA bandwidth or stagger mode to obtain a high gain. The PA is tuned to 24 GHz as a synchronous mode PA for the TX front-end operation. The proposed TX front-end showed an excellent output power of 11.7 dBm and dissipated 7.5 mW from a 1.2 V supply. In addition, the TX front-end achieved a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 47% and 1 dB compression point (OP1dB) of 10.5 dBm. In this case, the output power is 10.5 dBm higher than the linear portion of the response. The methodologies presented herein have the potential to advance the state of the art in 24 GHz radar technology, fostering innovations in fields such as autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and remote sensing. For very high frequency (VHF) phased array radar, the key problem to be solved in altitude measurement is the super-resolution spatial spectrum estimation under the condition of coherent sources. The spatial smoothing algorithm is a kind of decorrelation algorithm with excellent properties, but the decorrelation process is at the expense of the effective array aperture. Because it only uses the autocorrelation information of the subspace, its performance is significantly reduced, when the positions of the coherent sources are very close. In order to solve the above problems, this paper proposes an altitude measurement method of VHF radar based on the space smoothing of autocorrelation and cross-correlation matrix, which is used to realize the correlation and super-resolution processing of echo signals and multipath signals. The proposed method does not need to construct a weighting matrix, and can make full use of the received data, enhance the signal components in the equivalent spatial smoothing matrix, reduce the impact of noise, and improve the resolution of coherent sources.
