However, challenges such as ethnic conflict, past trauma, political unrest, and weak governance structures pose obstacles to peace and stability. Economic inequalities and competition for natural resources exacerbate conflicts, leading to poverty and social tension. Despite these challenges, community development projects and peace initiatives have shown positive results in overcoming poverty, improving healthcare, and promoting social harmony. Collaborative efforts, including cross-border cohesion, trade, infrastructure development, and good governance, are essential for the future prosperity and unity of East Africa. Accurate identification of descriptors for catalytic activities has long been essential to the in-depth understanding of catalysis and recently to set the basis for catalyst screening. However, commonly used methods suffer from low accuracy in predictability. This study reports an enhanced approach to accurately identify the descriptors from a kinetic dataset using a machine learning (ML) surrogate model. CO hydrogenation to methanol over Cu-based catalysts was taken as a case study. Our model captures not only the contribution from individual elementary steps but also the interaction between relevant steps within a reaction network, which was found to be essential for high accuracy. As a result, six effective descriptors are identified, which are accurate enough to ensure the trained gradient boosted regression (GBR) model for good prediction of the methanol turnover frequency (TOF) over metal (M)-doped Cu(111) model surfaces (M = Au, Cu, Pd, Pt, Ni). More importantly, going beyond the purely mathematical ML model, the catalytic role of each identified descriptor can be revealed by using model-agnostic interpretation tools, which enhances the insight into the promoting effect of alloying. The trained GBR model outperforms the conventional derivative-based methods in terms of both the predictability and the mechanism understanding. It opens alternative possibilities toward accurate descriptor-based rational catalyst optimization.

Background: There is a high prevalence of orofacial clefts in low- and middle-income countries with significant unmet need, despite having 50% of the population younger than 18 years in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The purpose of this article is to report on the experience of general surgeons with orofacial clefts at a single institution.Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients treated for cleft lip/palate in the province of North Kivu, DRC between 2008 and 2017.Results: A total of 1112 procedures (122/year) were performed. All procedures were performed by general surgeons following training by an international nongovernmental aid organization. A total of 59.2% of patients were male and the median age was 3.4 years (interquartile range: 0.7-13 years). Average distance from surgical center to patient location was 242.6 km (range: 2-1375 km) with outreach performed for distances >200 kms. A majority (82.1%) of patients received general anesthesia (GA) with significant differences in use of GA, age, weight, and length of stay by major orofacial cleft category. Of the 1112 patients, 86.1% were reported to have cleft lip alone, 10.5% had cleft lip and palate, and 3.4% cleft palate alone. Despite this, only 5.3% of patients underwent surgical repair of cleft palate.Conclusions: Multiple factors including malnutrition, risk of bleeding, procedural complexity, and cosmetic results may contribute to the distribution of procedures performed where most cleft palates are not treated. Based on previously published estimates, unmet needs and social burden of cleft lip and palate are high in the DRC.

The boom of the humanitarian and development industry in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the demand for qualitative and quantitative research that has accompanied it have created a novel political economy of academic research in the region. An array of research associations and private data collection firms have emerged to respond to the international demand by Western universities and research projects. Like many industries operating on the continent, academic research has a racial dimension, which is rarely reflected upon, in part because it is often invisible to white Western researchers. This paper reflects on the creation and evolution of a non-profit association specialized in the collection of data in conflict-affected areas of eastern DRC. The research association was conceived by its Congolese and European founders as an enclave against the racism that pervades professional relations in the region, an experiment upheld by a collective commitment to academic research and an egalitarian ethos. Written from the perspective of three of its founding members, this paper analyses how racialized discursive repertoires and cognitive biases (re)appeared within the organization. We argue that these repertoires and biases serve to activate a particular mode of production, based on racial and geographic inequalities in working conditions and prospects. We interrogate the relationship between race and the system of production underpinning contemporary research, and show that, far from solely being a remnant of the colonial era, race constitutes a resource that can be tapped into, particularly in a context where empirical data, competition for funding, and ‘value for money’ are increasingly becoming the norm.
